You absolutely have to know how to dress. I never quite learned that as a Floridian, even though I've lived in cold weather climates. LOL! I do know that it's essential to wear the right boots (with treads). Oh my, I learned that early on.

Snickersmom - I don't think I can take an Aromatase Inhibitor yet. I don't even know how they would be able to tell if I'm post-menopause. I was pre-menopause before chemo. I'm sure there are tests out there somewhere to test estrogen levels. I have to ask my MO when I see her next time. Maybe I have to be on Tamoxifen for a awhile before they can switch me over. I know, I was going to go through all of this anyway at age 51. Unfortunately my hormones were still raging when I was diagnosed last September. Sad

still doing 10000 steps per day.  the best part is my weight gain has stopped and from time to time it goes down a couple of pounds.  Arrrrghrimidex is behaving reasonably well.

Going back to work on Tuesday so exercise will be a challenge.

    happy new year ladies

I hate to think how large I would be if I didn't work out. Not something I want to contemplate. I don't always get the cold weather dressing quite right as can be seen from an excerpt from my recent Holiday letter. - Claire

There were a few mishaps along the way as well. But
fortunately, I did not freeze to death when I got hypothermic during a “nippy”
ski in early January, I didn’t get more than “a little bit stranded” on my
bicycle, I was wearing my helmet when I fell backwards trying to dismount my
bicycle while standing on a stray piece of litter (a rubber O-ring!) so came to
no serious harm, and I didn’t burn down the kitchen when I doused my Christmas
Pudding with too much hot brandy and it became too hot to handle. I was able to
eat just the right combination of foods when I seriously bonked on Day 2 of the
Seattle-to-Portland with 70 miles to go, and ride to a triumphant finish. This
was after freezing in a tent overnight with very little sleep, and should be a
reminder to pack a very warm blanket next time.

Karen, don't be surprised if your onc recommends five years of tamoxifen. I was 50 and in peri-menopause when dx. My onc kept me on tamox for five years even though my periods had stopped. Am now in full menopause and no more tam.

I'm a big fan of silk long johns. They are lightweight, warm, and wick moisture away from the skin. Cold is one thing but cold and wet is miserable, and dangerous.

Badger - I had a feeling that this was my only option. I've been on it since February, so I have another 4 years and 2 months. Ugh!! Do the hot flashes ever stop? I hear it does for some. It's just annoying.

I did my first post surgery Zumba this morning! It was fun, I kept the left arm kind of glued to my side cause I didn't want to swing it around, and I kept it all low impact. Discovered it's hard to wiggle your butt while keeping boobs still - it's like an additional core workout to isolate things like that, so that was a bonus.

I wore the new Zumba clothes which I ordered right after diagnosis to treat myself & as part of my promise to myself to keep dancing no matter what :)

My new fitbit arrived yesterday but the silly thing will not setup with my phone. The phone's bluetooth says it's paired but the app won't find it. Argh. Fitbit is trying to help me online but I think it might be that my phone is too old.

Karen, the tamox wasn't too hard on me. I would've done another five years but onc nixed that idea.

Yes, I still get HF but nowhere near as frequently or intense. I dress in layers and carry around a folding hand fan to deploy PRN. The night sweats are gone but I prefer to sleep in a cold BR with a light blanket that I flip on & off all night LOL. For a while, I kept a stack of clean dry t-shirts next to my side of the bed. Got so I could whip off the wet one and slip on a dry one without waking up completely.

    TampaBayBuc..

Hi, I am not in this site very often, although I need to be! If I had to report my exercise publically, I might be inclined to do more! Did you go to the luncheon in Tampa? I live near Patoo (Phyllis) and could not go that day. Next time I will. Anyway, I get into exercise....on a roll, then something happens.. travel, company, etc., and I get out of my routine. But, joined a new gym yesterday and AM going to do something everyday AND wear my Fitbit!

But, I wanted to respond to your post about being tired. Yes, I get tired more often since taking Arimidex. I have been on it for 2 years now. I could take a nap everyday, but when I do, I go to bed later and it gets my sleep pattern all mixed up. I wish I could make myself go to bed earlier and get up earlier. Sometimes after 9 hours of sleep, I am still very tired in the morning! Many of my friends are up by 7 and are wide awake and off to exercise classes by 8:00!!!! I can hardly drag myself up at 8:00, but my dogs make me! But, I do think the Arimidex makes me more tired! I also blame it for the extra weight around my middle!!! I have always had a small mid area until Arimidex. Phyllis says it does cause this. All the more reason I need to get back on the exercise wagon!

Best wishes to all of you and Happy Happy New Year! May God bless us all!

castigame, yeah for 10000 steps. Good luck with going back to work. I've been off work for a month come Jan 8th, and I miss the definition work adds to my week.

Claire_in_Seattle, Did I read that right? A 70 plus mile bike ride in winter? You go girl!

Moth, same happened to me. My phone was too old, they had to send me a duong to pair with my computer and then the FitBit paired with my 4.0 Android. I do love the FitBit Charge two.

Three miles on the Riverwalk today in under 15 minutes per mile! Woop, Woop!!!

My exercise today is chores...two good chores, cleaning out my bra drawer of all the post surgical bras, fillers, camisoles.  Cleaning out my sock draw and only keeping ones that have a match!

Badger - You described everything that I'm going through perfectly. OMG! I do the exact same thing as far as layering clothes. I can't keep a jacket on all day, but I need it because there are times when I'm freezing cold. I have a light quilted bedspread. I had to get rid of the down comforter. It was way too hot. Unfortunately, I also have a tempur-pedic mattress. So, you know what that means? It absorbs the heat from my body and stays warm. Not in a good way. My silk pillow case helps a little, but I have to move it around to get to the colder spots. We keep the temperature in the house at 72 degrees. The covers are on and off all night. My poor husband is dealing with it quite well. Hey, I've dealt with his CPAP machine for a couple of years now. I guess we're even.

Yeah, I guess I just have to take the SEs like a woman. ThumbsUp It doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon.

Lynn - Yes, I was at the Tampa luncheon. I met a lot of wonderful people that day. Looking forward to meeting you at the next one. Aw, it sounds like you all live in a fun community. I think Ann (Snickersmom) described it as an adult Disney World. I'll have to visit it one of these days. I think Ann was having the issue with fatigue. Is that right, Ann? I do get tired though. The tamoxifen I take doesn't allow me to sleep very well.

Moth - I'm sorry to hear about the fitbit pairing problem. Hope that technical support can assist with that. It really has helped keep me motivated. I love it when I get new badges. It makes me want to work harder.

    Happy New Year!

Went snowshoeing today with DH. I love the crunching sound of snow. Yes, dressing right makes all the difference.

Yay on 10K steps, castigame. Congrats on 1.1 lb., Twohobbies. I am also up at least 5 pounds from last spring. Maybe even 8. We shall see tomorrow.

Another character building day in North Dakota. At 9:00 am when I ventured out to POUND and Yoga the air temperature was minus 25, with a windchill of minus 45.......this afternoon it warmed up to a balmy minus 20 . You can not dress warm enough for this.....even my friend's Husky didn't want to be outside! Sadness.......

People I know personally who have gone from Tamoxifin to an AI usually have less severe hot flashes & other issues. When I was on Arimidex, I found it took about 6 months for my body to adjust. 'Keep moving, keep moving, keep moving' was the best advice a friend who had gone before me gave. I did use sleeping pills for most of those 5 years, because I slept like crap!

If you are just starting counting your steps, and haven't been very active as of late, start yourself with obtainable goals (5,000-6,000 steps or whatever) and work up in increments from there. Comparing what you do with other people can be fun, but the only real competition should be with yourself!

We have plans to meet another couple for dinner & a movie, so I will layer up again and out into the cold I will go!

Ruth: The cold. I can't even.........I don't know how you do it. And you're going out for dinner and a movie. Good for you!

Heidi: I have never been snowshoeing and would love to try it some day. Great picture!

We all are different with side effects. I was on Tamoxifen for 2 years - it was nasty to me and so glad to get off it. I had leg cramps, uterine bleeding (post menopausal but starting with Tam. before switching), but no hot flashes. Arimidex (3 years) did a number on my joints, became very stiff (thank goodness for exercise!), arthritis in my fingers, very sore feet, poor sleep, but no hot flashes. With that said, I'm so thankful for these drugs and all the ladies who were part of any trials, etc. before me!

    Walked/ran this afternoon.

Badger, Karen, and Lynn - yes, the Arimidex has made me want too nap almost every afternoon. Some days I do give in but most days, I try to push through and not give in. Most of the time when I lay down, I don't sleep but just resting does seem to help. A friend in my quilting chapter made me a lovely comfort quilt when I had my surgery in May, and that always makes me feel better! My cat loves the quilt and always cuddles up next to me and that's comforting, too.

I have sheets (from Kohl's) that are temperature-adjusting. So that helps. They are supposed to change as your body temperature changes and they do work, I think. I have started taking 3mg of Melatonin almost every night on the advice of my oncologist, and that has helped a lot. Now when I walk up in the middle of the night, I can usually get right back to sleep.

The weight gain....ah yes, now that's a bit of an issue. I hate my stomach and I'm trying so hard to get rid of it. I've been walking just about every day and am hoping that will eventually help. If could, I might be able to do a sit-up or two but my back issues will not allow that. So I am pretty much stuck with just walking.

Lynn - what gym did you join? We have Silver Sneakers and we can go to the one on 301 by The Floor Shoppe and the other place on 44 (can't remember the name) but we haven't been there yet. We heard that we are going to be able to go to MVP as part of the Silver Sneakers program but I don't know if that's true.

Hoping all of us in the greater Tampa area can get together again soon!

Happy and HEALTHY New Year to all of us! Hoping 2018 is a good year for everyone!

For me the Arimidex - was harder to tolerate in the beginning. But, the hot-flashes - are still pretty bad. It feels like a wave of heat coming from the inside - like I swallowed a small sun.

I *have* to sleep in a very cold room - or I wake up and can't go back to sleep!

    Heidihill - Nice Pic!!!

Moth - Congrats on getting back to Zumba!! That must have felt great! Good for you on ordering new Zumba clothes. I love buying fitness clothes!!

Ruth - OMG - that's crazy cold!!!! I hope it doesn't stay that way much longer!!!

Today I did a Body Combat class. But, it wasn't as hard/challenging as it usually is, I think the instructor made things easier this time, but not sure why. And, did 45 minutes on the stationary bike afterwards - which felt great!!!

My goodness it's been a month since I've logged on, I really fell off the wagon December is my crazy busy time at work and my classes had to go by the wayside but slowly I'm coming back. I did Body Pump and my goodness my poor quads are so sore from all that squatting and then went to Body Combat this morning so I'm sure my shoulders will be talking to me tomorrow.

Scared I know why your instructor made it easy - its launch week Body Combat 74 coming our way, all the instructors are learning new choreography.

Hey Mysunshine I got to sit on your lanai and love on your kitty, she was a bit shy at first but allowed me the pleasure of giving her a cuddle, we had a nice talk.

Ruth I can't imagine, I just can't imagine the cold you are experiencing, it's warming up again here, cool at night but lovelynin the daytime.

TampaBBGirl, im.on letrozole and I Still get hot flashes all the time. Never was on tamoxifen.

Got 6000 steps yesterday carting stuff from the car to our party and back. I was standing for almost 12 hours talking to 100 folks that showed up. I was wonderful! Everyone came to celebrate the end of my csncer, and I was celebrating all the support they gave me and my family.

I forgot to eat or drink all day, so I hope my kidneys forgive me for not drinking. I don't need another infection!

My chest on the cancer side is pretty sore. Make me think I might have mild truncal LE. I carried a lot of stuff in and out of the lodge. I have an appointment with a LE PT in a few weeks.

The energy from this celebration was amazng. Gotta keep this going into the new year.

Request for prayers and healing energy please. Our good friend was DX with kidney cancer about 8 yrs ago at age 50. He's been NED , but recent tests showed something in his lung. Pray it is just an infection. He is an amazing doctor, and friend.thx

This group just flies! Just got caught up on the last 10 days of posts - welcome to all the new people. I think I joined the fitbit group successfully, but another thing I have neglected over the holidays is my email, and it looks like I have several fitbit friend emails to attend to. I agree Ruth, fitbit groups and challenges can be fun and encouraging, but you really are just challenging yourself!

Last child leaves tomorrow, and New Years means getting back on track with food and exercise and other things that are good for me (socializing with friends, playing the fiddle). Watching the Pats play on tv today, very cold here with wind chills below zero (but you have us beat Ruth!), so glad the game we went to was last week instead of this week. Yes tampabaybucs, it has been a great run for our team, even though I know we are most hated in other parts of the country. I wonder what all us fans will do when the Brady/Bellichick era is over, it certainly has been a great run!

Had a couple of inches of snow yesterday, and a great big moon made everything look wonderful last night. Wishing you all a happy 2018.

Got in another 10000 steps yesterday. The last steps were in combination with the 20 minutes of elliptical activity (level 2). I have worked out a "get up and move" schedule to help me achieve my daily goal. It seems to be working. I can use break time at work next week to help me stay fit. I ate some thin crust pizza yesterday, so I'll need to work that off. One step forward, then two steps back. I have to reverse that.

Snickersmom - I didn't know they had temperature adjusting sheets at Kohl's. What a great idea! I'm going to look for some this week.

2FUN - I have truncal lymphedema. Let me know if you ever need any advise. My swelling has gone down quite a bit and the skin is softer (post LT). They'll be able to help with draining and exercises. I'm also sending prayers to your good friend.

Pat01 - Fortunately, I'm not one of those people who hates your team. I actually love Tom Brady (and Peyton Manning). They are going to be football legends. I guess they already are legends. The haters are just jealous. We have lots of Patriots fans in the Tampa area. I'm sure your team will do well even after Bellichick retires. He has many coaches under him that will carry on his strategies.

hi all and hey Cheryl, glad you survived the Dec rush. Love the snowshoe pix, Heidihill.

For those who didn't catch the article about Ruth Bader Ginsburg's workout routine, I wrote it down. Wowsers! I am even more impressed with RBG! IDK if I could do what this 83-YO woman does but have set a goal of replicating this workout in 2018.

    RBG's workout

    5 mins elliptical warm-up

    Light stretching

Strength training: 3 sets of 10-13, between sets stretch muscle groups being exercised

Machine exercises: bench press, leg curls, leg presses, chest flies, lat pull-downs

Seated rows, standing rows, one-legged squats (10 per leg), push-ups (2 sets of 10)

Planks: 30-sec standard plank, 30-sec side planks

    Stability ball exercises:

Sit on ball, do arm and shoulder exercises with dumbbells (DB)

At wall, with ball at back, alternate sets of squats and DB curls

Step exercises on 18" platform to strengthen knees and hips

Misc leg exercises on the floor, and standing with a staff for balance

    Bosu ball squats!

Medicine ball toss: stand, toss, and sit.

    ***

Finally, he had me sit on a bench while holding a medicine ball, then stand up, toss him the ball and sit back down again after he flipped the ball back to me. (With Ginsburg, he hands the ball back to her delicately.) "I told the justice that if you cannot do this exercise, you will need a nurse 24-7," Johnson recalled.

This exercise is crucial, he explained, because it employs the motion needed to use a toilet unassisted. I passed that one with flying colors. After 90 grueling minutes, panting and red in the face, I had more or less successfully completed the Ginsburg workout.

After catching my breath, I asked Johnson whether he recommended that older people do a workout like the one we just went through… [and he responded] "Do something. If you're not doing anything then I advise you do something. It doesn't matter what you do. You find out what is your niche and do something. Your body is made to move."

2FUN, you know how to throw a party!! Hoping for the best for your friend. Cheryl, good to see you back.*:) happy Been teaching new release #79 for 3 weeks and loving it. Ruth, the frozen coffee and never being able to dress warm enough in 25- you are made of much stronger stuff than me! HeidiHill, love to be on that walk with you, of course with best thermals. Two Hobbies, good for you on the weight loss. Claire, I stopped on the word bonked (!?!) and the realized it was low energy from lack of glycogen. Last two classes this morning, one was bodybalance cover the other my Pilates class at the spa and no gym tomorrow. Came home to expected sad news that DH's aunt had passed away last night (lung cancer), so trip up north soon for us. DH & DS with moi are off to a curry house that son's friends family owns - for dinner and then back home to ring in the new year.

Wishing you and yours a Happy New Year!

Edited to add: Great workout - thanks Badger!

Hi all, I have been MIA as I have let work get in the way of exercise and didn’t have anything to report, but still kept up on your activities. My New Year’s resolution is to leave school at 3:30 every day and exercise for an hour before dinner. We have cold temps and lots of snow so the last two days I have cross country skied up and down the driveway for a mile. Today I am going to a track with a friend and hope to do 2 miles. Thanks for the motivation and Happy New Year 2018, the best is yet to come!
