snickersmom - ann - what a beautiful gesture by your minister. It always gives me a special feeling when someone shares that they’re going through this, too, and doing well.

LilacBlue did you make your ornament yourself? Love it!

octogirl so glad to hear about your walking more and more! Sounds like you’re healing well!

Scottiemom hoping your back pain eases up soon ((hugs))

Welcome deehenn! This group keeps everybody moving :)

moth I fought seromas at my mastectomy site (right side, no reconstruction) for over four months. I was told general exercise like walking had no effect, but to be careful using the operated side arm too much. Of course being very right-handed, that wasn’t easy, so maybe that did make it so hard to stop the seromas? Hope yours stops soon.

Claire - love that you are absolutely shining with happiness in your pic!

I only have the exercise classes membership at the health club, so haven’t had any regular exercise since last Friday. But yes have been out walking, doing stretching and hand weights at home — and oops feels like I irritated another disk shoveling snow, this time mid-upper back, grrr. I have to keep stopping myself from saying ”I hate getting old”, though...

Hoping everybody here has been enjoying the holidays. My Christmas has been one of the nicest in years, and I am looking forward to the New Year celebration :)

llacblue, I totally LOVE your last comment! Not only do we have this dreaded disease of cancer so prevalent in our world, but we have the cancer of division and hatred and racism in our world. My prayer for the new year is a healing of both types of cancer!

It's 5 degrees today. I'm not walking outside. Will go to the gym once DS wakes up.

For those of you trying to drink more water, I have 2 tips. (I am drinking 100oz of water a day due to chronic infections). Use a straw, you can sucking it down faster. I made a tracking device for my cup. Place a wide rubber band on your waterbottle. Write the numbers 1, 2, 3 etc on the band. Put a paperclip over the band, and slide it along every time you fill up.

    Have a great day everyone!

Hi everyone! I have had a fun, fattening couple days. No formal exercise on Sunday. We had a beautiful candlelight church service (where I cried, as expected, during the singing of Silent Night while holding a lit candle), then had a group of friends over for turkey dinner & all the trimming. They are 4 families we've been friends with since our oldest kids were babies 28 years ago, so we have been through all the ups and downs of life together (which makes me teary as well...'tis the season). We had lots of fun visiting, catching up with some of the 'kids' who were home for the holidays etc. Monday I got up and did an exercise DVD; which was good but I did not get to 10,000 steps because the rest of the day consisted of eating, going to the movies, putting puzzles together, eating some more, playing games, and watching fireworks.

Claire, beautiful pictures, and your food sounds wonderful, as always!

Lilac, I sadly would have a lot of those ornaments I could pass out. Another good friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with a very grim prognosis......

    Welcome, deehenn!

Octo, Japan? That sounds very interesting. Send back reports!

Snickers, what a wonderful Christmas story. Good for you and good for the pastor too!

I went to Zumba this morning & might go back and do something tonight too (true confession, I just ate four cookies with my coffee after I came home from exerecising). I will have no outdoor exercise to report for awhile because we are in a 'cold snap'. Yesterday's high was MINUS 8, the windchill was MINUS 35, and exposed skin would freeze after 10 minutes!!! Shocked

Patoo - Thank you so much for creating that new group for us! My New Year's resolution is to get back into shape again. This will keep us all accountable.

Snickersmom - I loved reading about your experience at church. She sounds like a wonderful minister. I also feel the same as you. It feels good to have the support of others who have the same experiences. My husband was telling me the other day how happy he is that I've found such a wonderful group of ladies.

I also didn't know that you have herniated disc issues. I had to have a microdiscectomy back in May because my sciatic nerve was being compressed from a herniated disc. Unfortunately, the shots wouldn't have helped me. I couldn't stand or sit without excruciating pain. I still have some nerve damage in my left leg, but exercise seems to be making it all better.

Deehenn - Welcome! Keep up the walking. It's the best thing you can do while going through treatment.

Everyone else - I know, it has been a terrible year. I had been going through treatments since last October, and then my 90 year old mother was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer. It was a rough year. She is cancer free now, but we don't know if or when that cancer sucker will be back again. She won't go through chemo, and I don't blame her one bit. All I can say is that we are both very thankful. We had a wonderful Christmas together. We both feel great! I'm totally looking forward to next year.

Oh, and I did a total of 33 minutes on the elliptical yesterday. Will try to do more tonight.

Did another mile on Christmas Day with hubby, then had a quiet fun celebration. A mile is about all my old knee can handle. The new one is doing just fine.

Have some last minute errands and shopping to do today before my trip to Japan, but still plan to get in some walking....One good thing about living in Central California: weather is rarely a reason not to walk. Today's high predicted to be 60, mostly sunny. Don't hate me. Soon enough I will be moving to Nevada where it does snow now and then...

    Happy New Year to all!

    Happy Holidays!!

Not much to report for exercise these past few busy days! Got up and did yoga this morning along with some cleaning up around the house. Off to radiation appt and a consult with a Dr regarding ovary suppression and AI drugs which I will start after finishing radiation in Jan.

Will run on the treadmill this afternoon after my appts. Ruth is right, we are in a bit of a bitter cold here. -11* with a -31* windchill. I plan on spending most of my Christmas break indoors this year!

    Welcome to new members.

Caught up on 16 days of posts. Did not realize I had been offline so long. Hope everyone had great holiday/family time.

Still dealing with hives and back problems so not much exercise. I did a yoga class on Saturday morning that helped some. I tried to get back to Zumba but my body isn’t quite ready yet. I am going to try water fitness and seimming this week and see how it goes.

Lilac- love the ornament and the sentiment.

Snickersmom- I saw your post that you used to live in Putnam. I live in the next town over. Welcome to the best thread!

Enjoying a quiet day home reading by a sunny window after the craziness of the last couple of weeks in school. Finished making up the 20 parent conferences I missed due to back spasms. Such a relief. It is going to be super cold here in CT for the next week so this sunshine feels great!

Merry Xmas and Happy Holidays to all. Here are my babies, DD 19, DSs 16, and 4, before our Xmas Eve party. Fun times.

Ginger, I'm happy to read that you're getting rest after an exhausting start to the school year.

Lilac, I understand the tears and the fight and the marking of time.

Runnermum, I'm a year ahead of you I think, and when you read below you'll see what I mean. Best to you.

It's been a year since I finished rads, 7 months since the last surgery, and 6 weeks since my last Lupron shot. This Xmas my energy is noticeably improved and I am so grateful to be able to look back and observe the change.

    F*** cancer, for sure!!!

Hi all and Merry Chistmas/Happy Hanukah and everything else I missed.  I'm new to this board. Have been walking once or twice daily for the past year 30 minutes each time, but not very fast as doesn't get me winded. DH bought me some weights for my bench press/ knee exercise machine so Ill be using it now.  i have an elliptical and was using it up until my last surgery ALND Nov 29.  Having rads in two weeks - can i use my arms on the elliptical while going through rads? Ill definitely keep up the walking and maybe some lower leg and ab exercises.

Great board, hoping it will keep me motivated

Welcome Tpralph. You can use your arms yet fatigue can be the biggest set back to exercising with rads.an. Keep at it and do what you can. Falconer, I second Ruth, adorable! Octo enjoy Japan!

Thank you for understanding everyone and Tessu, the ornament can be bought on Etsy. 2Fun, you are right a physical disease and societal disease of hatred and racism. Tampabay, your sweet mother you've got it...enjoy what we have - now, in this moment. I too ate a bit too much and a walk with DH this Boxing Day afternoon helped. Back tomorrow, at the gym - BB and Pilates. Let's keep at it!*;) winking

3.5 mile run on treadmill and 15 min of core work on my bossu ball.

    Welcome Tralph!

Lilac...I loved that ornament too! Yes cancer can F off.

Hi Ruth...hope you are staying warm!

Falconer..cute kids. Yes you are about a yr ahead of me. I will finish radiation the end of Jan. Thank you for the reminder that better days are ahead. I am ready to be a yr out!

Today I had the consult with the ob/gyn Dr who delivered our youngest son 14 yrs ago. I normally see his NP. He recommended surgery + AI drugs. My MO told me that would be what this Dr would recommend andy MO is also recommending ovary suppression + AI drugs. The ob/gyn doc is recommending hysterectomy vs just a oophorectomy. I have about a month to make my decision. I would do the surgery this summer when on summer break (my job follows the school calendar). I really just wanted to do the oophorectomy but will probably do the hysterectomy. I was just looking forward to a summer off of hospitals, frequent clinic visits and other Dr shit. Just really tired of all of it. Plus it will be 6 wks of no exercise. Just makes me crabby! But probably better to do it now and be done with all of it.

Can I pick your guys brains?

How are you guys balancing your aerobic and weight training exercise?

I'm trying to plan out my exercise sched for next semester. I'm used to doing high intensity Zumba 2-3/week, brisk walking with my dogs daily, and yoga on my own.

I want to ramp this up a bit and I'm thinking the best strategy would be to add some weight training. I keep reading recommendations saying things like 'strength training twice a week' and I have to say that seems so ...vague.... I mean how much? How long is a session?

I guess perhaps booking some private sessions with a trainer in the weight room might be a good idea.

    Any input?

Moth, a trainer might be a good idea. I aim to get 4 hours of aerobic exercise & 4 hours of toning in a week (I put pilates, yoga, leg work, barre weights etc all in that category. I should do more weight work than I'm doing (because I have been doing more o..f the classes I just listed, I have been doing less weights). Speaking of yoga, I dragged myself away from the leftovers long enough to go to a class tonight.

Below I've copied part of an article from a newspaper column by Maria Shiver. She is reflecting on what Christmas means to her, and I thought it might speak to some of you as it did to me:

.......After Santa has done his work, I'll sit in silence listening to Christmas music. I'll listen to music that brings me joy and, yes, music that makes me cry. I'll think about the moments when people welcomed me in. I'll think about moments of meaning, connection and joy. And, yes, I'll think about those moments when I came to realize that certain things I wished to be certain, were no longer.

My wish for you this holiday is to sit in the power of the moment. My gift to you is a poem I wrote entitled "This Moment." Enjoy, and Merry Christmas.

My way of working is to set fitness goals. My new one is to cycle the Inner Hebrides two years from now. To do this, I have to stay fit and in shape. The rest will take care of itself. I cycle, ski, run, walk, lift weights, and do crunches. When it's hot out, I go swimming. My way of getting there.

I have finally cleaned up from Christmas Dinner plus got the last report out the door a little over an hour ago. So glad to have survived the ordeal. We had the most glorious Christmas with snow, so I dragged my friend out for a walk prior to dinner. Today, I was able to get out on my skis for a bit between finishing up the report and giving it one final (and much needed) read.

Dinner was delish, but had a near mishap with the pudding. Too much flame and literally too hot to handle, with (fortunately cool) flames landing on the kitchen floor. I got the pud in the sink and doused the flames. Relit at the table, and didn't attempt to carry anywhere. Below are shots from today's ski plus the re-ignited pudding. Brandy butter is in the bowl on the right. What a feast!!! - Claire

And finally the Christmas Pudding in all its flaming glory....

Moth I think a trainer is a great idea too. I am thinking about using one as well to get back in shape quicker. Running is usually my main form of activity (aim to run around 15-20miles per week, over 4 days) and I throw in strength training after my runs and also on the other couple days I don't run. My strength work is classes or workout dvds for light weights, core work, HIIT workouts, bossu ball workouts, yoga with strength work etc) When I am trAining for a race (usually a half marathon a few times a year) my mileage increases to around 30 miles per week and I do shorter strength sessions a few times a week. I started yoga about a year ago and try to get a short session of that a few times a week. When I have joined a gym I will also take spin classes in place of running and also other classes at the gym. Right now I am not at gym so I run outside or on our treadmill and use my bossu ball, exercise dvds and youtube for yoga and other exercise workouts.

Ruth, that is beautiful - thanks. Moth, what you are currently doing for exercise is excellent - keep at it and good responses yet you are not even a month out of surgery (I'm not sure of how many nodes you have had removed - that does make a difference to weight training). Almost everyone does have a preference to exercise they are drawn to and that is what keeps us at it, like Runnermum with running, etc.. Joining a gym, as Runnermum suggested is a easy way to round out with classes or using machines on the gym floor to add strength. Working with a trainer is good and one who specializes in cancer rehab - even better. Don't know where you live yet many of these trainers are involved in the LiveStrong programs of cancer rehab held in YMCA facilities. To up fitness, one needs to keep shaking it up, doing different things, adding HIIT is good and find time to workout daily - walking counts.

But truthfully, newest research offered recently at San Antonio, a average to low BMI makes a difference to breast cancer recurrence: http://www.onclive.com/conference-coverage/sabcs-2017/even-moderate-weight-loss-helps-prevent-breast-cancer-in-postmenopausal-women I got chewed on a bit by a BCO member awhile back on another thread who thinks this type of research make us feel awful because in their view, we are going to get recurrence regardless. There are many thing we can do to reduce recurrence - evidence based science is hard to refute, yet done all the time, especially here on the BCO.

Off to jump in the shower and start my 4 class day this morning.

Lilac blue. You are correct . It does make us feel bad (those of us with a higher BMI). I have struggled with weight all my life. But reality is the science. With increased fat , there is increased estrogen storage and increased estrogen production by the fat cells. That is part of the process AI s are intended.to interrupt.

I feel like if I could just get thru thsee chronic UTI s, I would be more consistent in my exercise and eating well. It's been less than 3 weeks since my last uti, treated this one beginning Christmas eve. And woke up feeling lousy again. Really tired of this. We have a big party planned in 3 days. I had better be better by then!

All the pictures are beautiful. Thanks to all for sharing their Christmas moments & treats!

Ruth - That's a great poem! I totally relate to reflecting back on those moments. It has been a trying year.

Moth - Are you doing radiation therapy? If so, you may want to ask your RO about exercise during treatment. My doctor didn't want me to do any strenuous activity that would cause a lot of sweating. Especially anything that will keep moisture trapped under the girls. Skin-on-skin contact is your enemy during that treatment. Wear a good sports bra, and try to keep air circulating under your arm (the affected side). I had to tear up one of my husbands cotton t-shirts to use as a buffer under my breast. Just saying... keep it dry so that you don't get any open wounds. I totally agree with LilacBlue. You just had surgery not too long ago. Do what you can for now.

So, last night I got 45 minutes on the elliptical. I had to go back to level 1, because level 2 was kicking my butt. Also, my fitbit is only counting it as elliptical activity and not putting it toward any of my active minutes. I'm a little disappointed about that. It only added 13 active minutes to my 45 minute workout. Sorry to rant about this. Maybe I took a hand off one of the bars. It's very finicky.

2Fun, have a theory as to why you are having chronic UTIs? It' hard to lose weight whilist on AL's and fully understand that. In the Pink Pilates, nearly 2/3rds of the participants have obese (30 and +) BMI's.

Just read a new article in NYT about cancer recurrence. Click here for NYT article From the link: Dr. David E. Gerber, a co-author and lung cancer researcher, said another message from the study was the importance of urging patients to eliminate or reduce cancer risk factors and pursue surveillance recommendations that can alert doctors to the development of a new cancer early enough for cure.

I think my utis are from decreased estrogen. They started peri meno. Got worse after hysto (endometrial cancer at same time as BC) and then AIs. Trying to decide if I try topical estrogen. Gyn says it's not systemically absorbed, but really don't want to add estrogen to the system. MO says it will be up to me to decide. I can make do with all the other SEs, but this has me very stressed!

Sorry to be off topic. I'm just really feeling like I'm at the end of my rope. Sigh. Keep at it ladies, I'll join you at the gym soon!

Only managed 3K steps, snowstorm today, but went up and down stairs at leaat a dozen times decluttering, and am going to SPS class tonight.

2FUN my oncologist finally convinced me to try topical estrogen ”down there”; huge improvement after only a week, so I switched from every night to once every 1-2 weeks and have been doing so much better. Hoping you find a solution, too. Lack of estrogen sucks :(

thanks for the info tessu. Think that may be what I need to do. It means I need to really get serious about losing 50 pounds. Even tho I feel like I have no control over the body I have been given, I do have control over what I put in my body and how I use it.

I will do some yoga today.

lilac, thanks for sharing that research re: breast cancer post menopausal weight loss. Unfortunately it relates to women who have never had cancer. Id really like to see some research for previous BC patients and see how exercise/ diet/ weight plays a role.  I do believe it will help us but Id like to see some evidence as well would make me feel like I'm doing something proactive.

    just to support my theory.

lilac,, really like the article when cancer strikes twice that you posted. I do agree that we need better follow up care from either our oncologist (longer than 5 years which will be my case) or by our primary care providers. Perhaps if we were given the opportunity to learn about evidence based guidelines we could be proactive.

in regards to exercise. I'm walking 30 minutes today with my dog dexter and doing some ab work, stretches and leg strengthening exercises

Did Jillian Michaels Yoga Inferno DVD followed by a short 20 min core yoga workout. Off to radiation and a dental cleaning this afternoon.

Ruth...loved the poem. I think back about the moments we have experienced this past year. It def has made me a stronger person.

Lilac...interesting article. Thank y o in for sharing. Made me think about the discussion I had with the ob/gyn Dr yesterday. His argument for the having the full hysterectomy is that since I am done having kids I dont need any of it anymore and studies show there are ties between ovarian and uterine cancer to breast cancer. Even though my genetic testing was negative, it's his belief there are genes that have not yet been discovered. And my maternal grandma had bc 2x.

2Fun...I hope you start feeling better soon. Not feeling well is hard.

Tpralph - this is a 2017 published study in CMAJ which looked exactly at this issue. It's a lit review.

They assessed lifestyle modification factors for breast cancer survivors & which are most impactful to quality of life & survival. Exercise & low bmi have strong evidence.
