I don't have the reference at hand, but a lot of the work on the micro biome (bacteria that live in and around us ) show an improved immune response when we have more and many different kinds of bacteria in our gut. Ways of increasing bacteria numbers and diversity include eating fruits and veggies, not eating sugar and processed carbs, and exercising.
It would be nice to see studies of different groups, like BC, diabetes, etc to see if really sticking to a exercise program impacts the immune system.

Tonight will be my first class since last Thursday, an active yin yoga class that I sorely need...woke up with a sore R shoulder, no clue what I did there!
Having a very cold time in Virginia, only in the high 30's...don't know how you guys in the 0's are even leaving the house!
The article on second cancers is interesting...my last trip to the dermatologist found a benign lesion that the dermatologist said was similar in structure to the polyps associated with colon cancer/cleared out at your colonoscopy. When I relayed this to my GP and the Gastro Dr, they weren't impressed, but said I could go to a 5yr cycle vs 10yr on my colonoscopy if I wanted to...

hi everyone,
I daren't even get on the scales to see how much weight I have gained. Never liked sport much but I know I have to do something. My muscles and joints ache from the Herceptin I think. Any tips how to begin? Need some motivation
-
Hi Helen-ruth!
We can cheer you on! Maybe start with walking?
You could also get a fitness tracker to log your steps, keep you motivated & you can join challenges etc with friends. Many are on sale now. I'm going to order one today -
Welcome Helen-ruth! Walking is a great start & a fitness tracker can make you move even if you don't want to. If you have friends who are into exercise, or would like to get into it, meeting up with them for a walk or class can be great for the accountability part of it (so is posting here every day). If you have access to a gym, try some different classes & see if there's any that might actually be fun to you. Make exercise something you do every day, even if it's walking in front of the TV for 15 minutes, once it becomes a habit (which I think takes about 6 weeks), then you will actually not want to miss it!

Hi Ladies,
Since I just had some tweeking to my reconstruction a few weeks ago I'm taking it easy at the gym. Walking on treadmill for 30mins and working out my legs for another 20mins. Hoping I can start running after a few more weeks
-
Here's the collage of the Wednesday Walking Women. The air temperature was still -19 at 10:00 this morning!!! Our snowbirds (people who go south for the winter) have flown the coop but we were joined by some 'kids' home visiting for the holidays. I went to yoga last night & will hit Zumba tonight.
-
Helen ruth, I think walking is a good place to start if you don't have a gym membership most local malls welcome walkers.if time is your limiting factor I like this approach: say I hove 10 minutes before I have to leave for an appt. I walk out my front door for 5 mknutes, turn around and walk back. Squeeze in a few sessions a day. Welcome to the group.

Welcome, Gwendolendenise!

Welcome all new ladies!
I shoveled snow for half an hour before SPS class, so now I don’t feel so lazy. (My snow shoveling is slow and with much lighter loads than I used to do, but it was a good workout!)
Helen-ruth although my docs insisted that Herceptin had no side effects except sometimes on the heart (which I luckily did not get), I felt extremely dragged tired out all the time. I had stiffness and joint pains but blamed those on the AIs. If you’re only getting one year of Herceptin, expect an increase in energy starting about a month or so after your last dose

Hi there Fitties!
I was a marathon runner prior to my diagnosis, and I got released back to working out post-hysterectomy last Friday.
I started a rather ambitious strength program yesterday, the Jim Stoppani "Shortcut to Shred," which involves doing 60 seconds of cardio in between weight sets. I'm going to use these workouts as cross-training for my running. Yesterday was chest, triceps, and abs, and I ran four miles this morning. I could feel the workout in my chest muscles while I was running, but it was the good, post-exercise kind of pain, not the bad, injury kind.
This was my second run since I was released. I don't have any pain, but I'm feeling severely undertrained, which is to be expected, since I couldn't do much of anything for seven weeks. I've got a 10K race on 1/13 and the Donna Breast Cancer Half on 2/11. I'm glad I picked the 10K option and not the half on 1/13; there's no way I could be ready for a half that soon.
I'm going to see if I can pop out a 5K tomorrow a.m. and a Stoppani weight workout in the p.m., although a double might be a bit too ambitious.

Welcome, nightcrawler!

Welcome to all the newbies! Yes, Baby its cold outside. Bitter cold here has kept me from outdoor exercise, I did some upper body with my barbells last night and I guess I will get out my P90 tape today. I am planning on joining the gym, but won't get around to it today as the battery in my car died at the gas station today (ught). Came home and took a hot shower and will run out to buy a new battery as soon as my hair dries.
2Fun, I have a preventative prescription for UTIs, and it works. Last time I had a UTI, I had just forgotten to take it. Finally my MOs has gotten a little more comfortable with estrogen though, and if I can get there, I think next time I go to my ob/gyn I will probably discuss that.
TPralph, when I had my local recurrence, I searched and searched on ways I could help prevent recurrence. Exercise is definitely one way, - the more the better. 150 minutes minimum, 3 to 5 hours a week works better. At that time, they didn't know if losing weight would help, but they did know that maintaining weight would help. So if anyone can't lose, for sure try to maintain where you are. The other thing I found was women who reduced carbs by one serving or more per day did better, and those with lower fasting blood sugar (below 86) also did better.
On that note, I need to get back to eating better and not straying so much. I've gained 2-3 pounds three times now in the last two years, leaving me up 10 lbs today from 5 years ago. I am thinking about starting a "let's post our daily food" type thread for peer pressure and support. Does anyone think that would be helpful to them? I really do get motivated to exercise by being here, so maybe it would work similarly for food intake?
-
Thx everyone for your feedback re the weight room/strength training.
I don't know yet if I'm doing chemo first or going straight to radiation; still waiting for oncotype results and the tumor board to meet.
TwoHobbies, are you using MyFitnessPal to track food? You can friend people there (& I think you can also get it to sync with a fitbit if you have one).I also found Eat This Much helpful to give me a snapshot of how much food I need & what that might look like in a day. I'm a small person and need way less food than is normally served anywhere... https://www.eatthismuch.com/

thanks Ladies, I am goimg to start tomorrow and shall post my progress, by the way how do I get my diagnosis to appear at the bottom of my posts like you all have, hahhaha just worked it out! 😀😀
-
thanks moth for that lit review.IT was informative and I learned a few things. Interesting about the soy.
unfortunately it doesn't have evidence for weight loss AFTER BC diagnosis. It would be reasonable to assume it would help though.
I am going to make sure i take my vit D every day and will be starting into more vigorous exercise in a few weeks (healing still from alnd)

Very proud of myself - I did 5700 steps today! Golf this morning and then a nice long walk plus some grocery shopping. I just need to keep going and get to 10,000 every day!
Claire - your pictures are great and the plum pudding looks pretty darned good! I promised my son-in--law I would make him figgy pudding next year for Christmas. He loves figs, so we'll see! Every year I decide to go through my 4 inch binders stuffed with recipes, and make every single recipe. Hasn't happened yet.
Octo - have a wonderful trip to Japan and enjoy every minute of your stay there.
TampaBay - so sorry to hear about your mom but I'm glad she is doing well. I just hate this cancer thing. It sure does interfere with life, doesn't it??
Ginger48 - we were just up in Massachusetts for Christmas and drove through Putnam on our way down to shop in Dayville. Small world!
Falconer - beautiful picture of your family!
Tpralph - welcome to a wonderful group of women!
Ruthbru - thank you for posting that poem. It is beautiful.
-
RuthBru - love the pictures of your walking women!

Just got a call from my surgeon's office. They have scheduled my scar revision surgery for February 7th. I do have a bit of angst about it because I just don't want more surgery. But there are two small places where any clothing rubs and it's very annoying and uncomfortable. I've heard that this is fairly common surgery. Has anyone had this
-
Had my final post total knee replacement surgery check in with ortho surgeon today. Not surprisingly, he said I am doing great, ahead of schedule on healing, and he is very pleased with outcome (showing me the xrays pre and post to point out what a good job he did of straightening out my previously knocked knee'd leg), and of course he was really happy when I noted that family had already commented on the difference...sure he was bragging (and otherwise has almost no bedside manner) but in a surgeon, I will take one who has pride in his work over one who talks a good game but doesn't...
Anyway, he cleared me for normal activity and sent me on my way until he does the other knee (in mid-February). I tried to convince him he should prescribe more physical therapy, but he frowned and told me I didn't need it, that I had all of my range of motion back and that therefore, at this point he thought that PT was 'just expensive exercise..' Well...yeah. Why does he think I like it? It motivates me! and why does he think I am doing so well, anyway? Oh well. Sigh. Guess the moral of the story is: now I need a trainer also!
In any case, I will be doing lots of walking on my trip. Off to pack! I leave Saturday for Japan! Pics later.
-
Hi all (including the newbies).
TampaBay, I agree the Fitbit group may help to keep us motivated. I also intend to make it a priority, again, to exercise daily. This week is tough with my DS and DIL here as they both use walkers but still cannot ambulate very well, especially DIL. Taking them home tomorrow, staying in Friday to clean house and catch up on other stuff but next week will start up again to work on me!
Night sculpted friends.

We got a bit more snow today but it's already warming up and I think tomorrow might be more rain than anything....so I dug out a magic carpet thing and my 19 yo ds & I went to the neighbourhood hill and took for a few spins. You're never too old to slide down a hill! It was dusk. There were the echoes of the squealing, the laughing when you fall off, the snow that gets under your parka when you wipe out, the getting winded walking back up the hill ... I only went a few times as I didn't want to jostle the boob too much but it was fun & I'm counting it as bonus exercise
-
Great news on the knee octogirl! Japan, how cool. Have fun!
DD turns 18 today it is sort of bittersweet. She packed her stuff to go back home to see her boyfriend and friends and celebrate with them. At least we had Christmas togerher. Here's a family picture above the slopes (I'm in the reflection). She was not that happy to have to be skiing with us. But DH wanted to squeeze every minute he could to be with her before she turned 18
-
Welcome to everyone who newly joined!
I also love all the pictures that have been posted. I love seeing the snow.
I'm still trying to play catch up. I got in about 5500 steps yesterday. I did 46 minutes on the elliptical. The fitbit actually logged those active minutes correctly. I took some advil before I went to bed last night because I had some very minor pain in my lower back. What's the saying? No pain, no gain?
Snickersmom - Thanks, and yes. I totally agree with you.
Patoo - Enjoy your time with family. I'm using this time to catch up with you. LOL! I'm looking forward to January, so that we can all start up together on a clean slate. Then, I can really tell if I'm slacking or not.
To all my fitbit friends - I doubt I can keep up with any of you, but I most certainly will try.
Karen

TampaBay, I will also have a challenge keeping up with steps because my activities don't register as steps though fitbit does register them as other exercise. Pickleball does not really register because it's stop and go. Water aerobics and water volleyball are not counted either. So I may have to try and add a walk sometime in-between. We'll see.
Have a great day my sculpted friends.
-
Patoo - glad you had such a great time with your family! My best exercise is walking. Pickleball didn't like my back (or the other way around!) and it's too darned cold for me to do water aerobics. I love to walk so that's what it will be. Now I just have to get up to and over that 10,000 steps
-
Snickersmom, take it easy. It's not easy to get 10,000 so just do what you can initially and try add more each day. Water sports I'm trying to get back to start usually around 11am and by end (noon/1pm) the temps usually have gone up at least into the 70's (though that may not be the case for January!). And they keep the pool water temps at 82-84 degrees year round. But you are not alone as many don't want to go during the winter.
-
Hi All!
I have nothing but respect for all you exercisers in those cold weather states. In your situation, I would curl up by the fire all day. I hate the cold, which is while I live in Florida. Even so, I used to bemoan getting up some mornings to do my run, but I don't think I will ever complain about that again. After 20 long days, I got my drains out yesterday! Hallelujah! Next Thursday will be four weeks post-op for me, and I will be release to start running again. Double Hallelujah!! I didn't feel comfortable walking with my drains in, but i'm doing a four-mile walk today (downtown by way of the Riverwalk and back). My goal is to continue training for a February 15K, which I was getting ready for before being so rudely interrupted with a cancer diagnosis. There's an option to walk or run the 15K, but I rather run it and beat last year's time. Funny how you don't really appreciate a healthy body until your health is challenge. Looking forward to following everyone's progress. Have a fit day!
-
Thanks, Patoo. I'm trying not to be too hard on myself. I was excited just to go over 5,000 yesterday! Today is catching up on bills and paperwork so I'll only be walking around the house. Made Jim some chicken soup for his man cold. I'm trying to stay out of his way!!
Have a super day, everyone!!
-
Heidihill, Happy 18th birthday to your DD, who will one day be glad you were both out on the slopes with her!!
