Peregrinelady, welcome back!
Curry sounds wonderful for NYE. Does anyone do the traditional red beans and rice?
Simmering a big pot of kale and sausage soup. OMG house smells great.
Need to go and do a round of Shovel & Sculpt to clear the sidewalk while the sun's out.
-
Happy New Year everyone!! Just finished a 4 mile run on the "instead mill" and 15 minutes of strength circuit (7 exercises x 1min each/2x thru).
I live an hour east of Ruth and it's frigid here again today. This morning when I got up we had a -25* actual temp and felt like -40* with the wind chill. I have spent most of my Christmas break hibernating inside.
Started Tamoxifen last night. Will be switching to Armidex this summer after either an oopherectomy or hysterectomy. Have not decided which for sure. Somewhat nervous about side effects but just need to keep exercising and start eating better.
2Fun...your party sounds wonderful! I am planning something for next summer when I am off work and it's nice enough that we can be in our backyard. Thinking we will have a big barbeque! I too want to thank so many that reached out and supported us these past months. It has been overwhelming and brought both my husband and I to tears so many times.
Wishing all of you a wonderful New Years Eve!
-
Happy New Year everyone! I hope to be back after my cast is removed 1/12. Thank you all for the support and motivation you provided in 2017. I can’t wait to get back to it in 2018
-
Whoohoo Chris!! You are almost there! I slipped on ice a few years ago and broke my elbow in 2 places. I remember how sucky it was to have that darn cast. I think the last week I had it I couldn't take not running anymore so I went tp the gym and hopped on the treadmill a few times. It was against Dr's orders but it had been a long 6 weeks!!
-
So fun to log on and read all the good reports. We are all awesome, if I do say so myself!!!
CDV, glad to here that you are almost at the finish line for the cast. So annoying!!
Lilac, so sorry about DH's aunt.
2FUN, your party sounds great! Good to see the LE therapist, but your chest is probably sore from all the extra activity. A year after my surgery (and I had been active throughout that year), our town was expecting flooding so I went down and helped make sandbags (as I had done several times before). The next day, my chest was so sore that I thought maybe I had broken a rib!! It all just settled down on its own, but I learned my lesson & the next time we had a sandbag making situation, I volunteered to make sandwiches with the old Salvation Army ladies instead of being a worker!
I went to church and (unless I get an offer I can't refuse) plan to stay home for the rest of the day, evening, and maybe even all day tomorrow! I will do some sort of exercise DVD after the Vikings game.
Wishing us all a happy, healthy, hopping (running, swimming, walking, dancing, biking, skiing.....) 2018!!!!
-
Awesome workout at the gym! Killing it in U-Jam today (threw in some extra jumps and squats!) Then, bike afterwards - my quads feel like they are on fire!!
Happy New Year!!!!
-
LB: So sorry to read about your dh's aunt.
cdv: I'm sure you can't wait until the 12th!
Love reading all the activity that's being posted. It's cold here (25 degrees) but not like North Dakota or other areas. Still, it was too cold for me to want to walk/run outside. Instead, I set my kitchen timer and walked in the house! It drives the cat batty when I do it.
-
Happy New Year to all from Tokyo, where it is already 2018...
Arrived yesterday and walked a fair amount, in airports, up and down the plane aisles (my ortho had cleared me for the long plane ride after the knee replacement only if I promised to get up and walk every two hours: DVT is a potential side effect of TKR, although I am probably far enough from surgery that it isn't really an issue). New Year's Eve and Day are quiet, family oriented holidays here in Japan, it was relatively cold (well, not by North Dakota standards) yesterday but today is sunny and beautiful at about 54 degrees!
We are headed to my sister's DIL's parents for a NYD celebration, so will do some walking to and from subway stations, etc. More walking and sight seeing on the agenda for tomorrow, which is a good thing since so far everything I've eaten has been delicious! (fortunately, heavy on the vegetables and light on stuff that is bad for me..though that may change today since one of the family members at the celebration is a pastry chef... :-)
Happy New Year's to all and keep moving!
Octogirl -
Lilac so sorry about your DHs aunt. I have some of those sheets too, haven't used them yet I found them just before Christmas at Big Lots and I've put them away till next summer. Chris the 12th will be here before you know it. Badger I just had leftover Mexican food for dinner and had some pinto beans so that will count for me, funnily enough that quote came up on my FB feed yesterday and I saved it cause I need to remind myself sometimes. Heidi that snow looks very deep but you look wonderful
This morning went to a special 90 minute Body Combat class, my arms felt like they were going to fall off and this afternoon my next door neighbor and I went and got pedicures and sitting that chair with the massager felt wonderful. Happy New Year everyone, toasting to our awesomeness with a nice cup of tea.
-
Showing off my Christmas bling. Only 600 steps today.
-
I am doing a quiet evening in for NYE. This after preparing a feast for a friend yesterday evening. I dragged him out for a walk in a new place just down the road from where I live. View is of the Lower Snoqualmie River below. Today, I went to Snoqualmie and got a season's pass. I think the larger sport was finding a place to park. Will arrive earlier tomorrow, as tonight's meal will be simple. Just soup, and then some salmon caviar along with the salmon I was given.
Here are pictures from the two days. It hurts to sit down right now, even after a long soak in the tub. - Claire
-
Lilac - sorry to hear about your DH's aunt. Mexico- great picture of you and your bling! Claire - beautiful pictures of you and your scenery! The snow is so beautiful but I just don't miss driving on it. That always terrified me.
Not very many steps today. We are having the floors all replaced on Tuesday and so are moving all of the small stuff into the garage and/or out to the lanai. And now we are going to have really cold temps from Wednesday-Saturday night, so I will have to bring all of the orchids into the lanai tomorrow. Just have to try not to bring any geckos in, too! Our cat isn't a very good hunter - she's afraid of geckos.
-
Cheryl, hour and half of Body Combat would bust me chops for sure. Very dramatic lighting Claire, especially bottom photo. Nice handbag Heather. Octo in Tokyo - wow!! Cdv, been thinking about you and reads that you did have the surgery..hence cast? Wishing you a speedy recovery. Sinckersmom, I've never had a problem with tracking geckos in the house - like that! Runnersmum, don't think I could feel the difference between -25 and -40, LOL, good to read that you keep on running - yay! Scared, you read as so happy when you have your ass whooped at the gym! Wonderland, do you create more art indoors during winter? Peregrinelady, good plan for working out. Badger, the curry house was excellent, yet DH ate a chili by mistake, turned bright red, downed pints of water and me fuming across the table, as in ordering I begged him to go easy on heat since he is a person in throat cancer remission. I've got to try your soup recipe - reads as delicious, especially since DH is sausage mad (in his DNA). Ms.HeidiHill, are you scaling the alps today?
Very kind of you wonderful women for supporting our loss - thank you ><. Aunt Ginny was a truly lovely lady (so kind and generous to our son since birth) who, even when cancer did go into remission with first round of treatment (surgery - radio & chemo), never stopped smoking - recurrence over time, rolled forward to many organs~sigh. Woke at 6am and realized I forgotten to take the lamb out of the freezer night before for NYDay -opps. So much for a lie in, leapt out of bed and lamb is on top of the boiler defrosting as I type and I'm thinking of a run to the one supermarket open and buy a back-up whatever is left that I can buy. Have a enjoyable New Years Day everyone!
-
LB, that soup is one of the few ways I can get DH to eat kale. It's got chickpeas instead of black-eyed peas but think it satisfies the Southern tradition of eating beans, pork, and greens for good luck on New Year's Day. We'll have to have some leftovers today. Here's the recipe:
Sausage and Kale Soup Recipe
This is my family's absolute favorite soup, and I can have it on the table in 30 minutes. I usually double the recipe, as the flavors blend and make the soup even better the next day.—Dawn Rohn, Riverton, Wyoming
MAKES: 15 servings (3.5 Quarts)
TOTAL TIME: Prep: 15 min. Cook: 25 min.
Ingredients
1 pound smoked kielbasa or Polish sausage, cut into 1/4-inch slices*
3 medium Yukon Gold or red potatoes, chopped
2 medium onions, chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 bunch kale, trimmed and torn
4 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 bay leaves
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
1 can (15 ounces) garbanzo beans or chickpeas, rinsed and drained
1 carton (32 ounces) chicken broth
Directions
In a Dutch oven over medium-low heat, cook the sausage, potatoes and onions in oil for 5 minutes or until sausage is heated through, stirring occasionally. Add kale; cover and cook for 2-3 minutes or until kale is wilted. Add garlic; cook 1 minute longer. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 9-12 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Discard bay leaves.
*I use ground sausage instead of kielbasa, and cook it halfway through before adding onion & potato.

Sharing two videos from a group I recently discovered: Pentatonix. These people can SING!
The first one is for the beauty and the second one is for the fun.
Happy New Year, Everyone!
-
LilacBlue - You Aunt Ginny sounds like a wonderful lady. So sorry to hear of her passing.
Badger - I can't wait to make that Sausage & Kale soup. It looks delicious!
Snickersmom - I ordered the sheets from Kohl's online. Thanks again for the recommendation.
cdv - That's great news about the cast removal. I'm sure you can't wait to be free of it once and for all.
Heather & Claire - I love the happy faces and beautiful scenes that I see in the pictures. Keep them coming!
Octogirl - It looks like you're having a wonderful time with family in Japan. I had to smile when you were talking about more veggies than meat. I think we can all benefit from that kind of diet. It's a reminder to me.
Ruth - Yay on the Vikings! We were at the Bucs/Vikings game earlier this year. I loved that experience even though our team lost. It sure would be nice if they could have a Super Bowl game at home. I'm not sure if any team has been able to do that before. That would be awesome.
Wow, it took me a while to read through all the posts this time. I hope I didn't miss anything.
I was able to reach 10000 steps again. That's 3 days in a row. No elliptical this time. I think I can manage this now. It's all about getting up and just moving throughout the day. I may actually use that timer in the office tomorrow. The one that vibrates to let you know that you need to move.
Yay, it's 2018!!!!
-
Snickersmom - glad to have another Pats fan on here!
TampaBayBucs - too funny, I love Peyton Manning too. So much so, that I would go to the Pats games when they were playing him at home! I have both a colts and broncos manning tshirt that I wore under my patriots gear. My fondness for Peyton did not go over well with my patriots friends - oh well!
New year, spending a lot of time thinking about what will make 2018 a year that makes me happy and content. Weighed myself this morning, I weigh 3 lbs more than I did last New Years. Not bad, but my body shape certainly has changed, and even my "fat" pants are tight. So of course I start thinking about watching what I eat, exercise, etc. But I also want to concentrate on things that make my head and heart feel good too, getting rid of household clutter, bringing music back into my life, reading more, maintaining connections with good friends, taking a break from people who do not bring me joy. But as with all things, baby steps, I do not want to overwhelm myself, because that certainly would not bring me happiness.
I did join the BCO fitbit group, but not sure what that is about. Some of that fitbit stuff is a mystery to me. If I go to groups I can't see it, but if I go to the link I can. Anyway, I did send friend requests to several of you ladies, and got replies back from some. Some of you ladies are rockstar steppers - I am going to have to get back into it! But it's so cold... -1 here this morning. So it will be the treadmill at the gym. Baby steps, and no more excuses.
-
Badger - I just printed that recipe and will be making it very soon. It sounds wonderful and I can't wait to make it. My husband said he would prefer the ground sausage. I would prefer Kielbasa. Since I'm going to be the one making it, I guess we know what will be in it! Neither of us is very fond of garbanzo beans or chick peas so I will probably use either cannelloni beans or kidney beans.
We both love Pentatonix and have their CDs. We first saw them on the Sing-off a few years ago and could not believe how wonderful they were. They have replaced two of the guys and the girl, but they are still fabulous. Glad you discovered them!
Happy New Year to everyone
-
TampaBay - glad you were able to find those sheets and I hope they work for you. I have two sets of them and they are the only ones I use. Great in any season because they seem to adjust to body temp. The pillowcases are the same, altho I still have the occasional night sweat, just not as bad as before. My MO told me to take fish oil pills. He said that helps with hot flashes and night sweats. I take it but I don't honestly know if they help. I had a hard time with menopause in my 40s and early 50s but then they went away. Now they are nowhere near as severe, thankfully.
Pat01 - I do believe you are a Rhode Island girl, right? We are originally from Connecticut but moved to sunny Florida 6 years ago. I do NOT miss the cold and snow! We were just in Massachusetts for Christmas but even a week of temps in the 40's was tough. We have a neighbor from Wyoming who is a diehard Broncos fan so of course I had to bring him a Pats t-shirt! He laughed when we gave it to him, but now he probably uses it to wash his car! I loved what you said about taking a break from those who don't bring joy into our lives. I have done exactly that and I know I am better off. I hate gossip and negativity, so I have found plenty of other things to occupy my time. I don't even watch the news anymore. So between quilting, my Guardian Ad Litem kiddos, and my husband and friends, I am happy. And now that I have all of you, life is even better!!!
-
Yesterday was my first full day with the fitbit up and running (I finally remembered I have an old iPad that I could sync with) and I made it to just over 7K steps and that was a day where I feel I spent most of it in front of netflix lol. It captured my morning walk as exercise but my evening dog walk didn't count - no doubt because I was pigeon walking slowly on the icy roads and cut the walk short. I think my heart rate was up but that mostly from muttering "don't fall, don't fall, don't fall" I didn't want me (or my ancient dog) to break any limbs to end 2017 ...
Happy New Year everyone. Here's to lots of good sweating in 2018 -
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Wishing all of us a healthy, loving, peaceful year.
We always turn our Christmas tree (the ornaments have been removed) into a New Year tree at midnight. Been doing this all my life.
-
Pat - Have you ever watched the documentary of the Manning Family? I believe it's called the "The Book of Manning." I was a fan before that aired on ESPN, but I now have more admiration for the entire family. They've overcome so much.
As for the BCO group, we're all pretty new to that group. I think we're all still learning about the fitbit group features. You will get challenges from your friends from time to time. I think everyone is just enjoying the break during the holiday season. Things will pick up again soon.
Thanks Snickersmom! I think anything that will help me stay cool at night would be appreciated. LOL! I did try melatonin for sleep. I know someone mentioned that. Maybe it was because I used the gummy brand of melatonin. It didn't help me. I may try another brand with a higher dosage.
Wonderland - I love the streamers!
-
I thought you all would get a kick out of this!
-
I am going to make the kale and sausage soup! Sounds really good! COLD and rain here in Florida today! Brrr!
Taking my dogs for a run at the dog park and off to Dillard's 50% off sale.....their biggest sale of the year. I need nothing....but have to go look!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
-
Ruth, Just saw your post! That is funny! Will pass on to my sister in Oregon!
-
ruthbru - Hilarious! Perspective is everything
As for exercise - I had to dial back for a couple of weeks due to a minor cold and aggravated back muscle. I think the cold caused me to be nauseous for 3 days which I find strange because it seemed like a pretty minor cold and that's never happened before. I started Tamoxifen about a month ago & thought it was possible that that was the cause. I started splitting my pill in two and taking half in the morning & half at night. The nausea went away & I went back to the whole pill at night & no nausea, so I guess it was the cold. Back muscle has improved and I resumed my rotation yesterday. I have an amazing accupuncturist who suggested that I try Mary Helen Bowers ballet workouts to help with my back muscle, so I'll be working those in too.
Happy New Year to All! Here's to a year of abundant health & happiness for all!
-
How did I not know Dillard's is having such a great sale??? Not that I need anything...........
-
Wonderland - love that tree and the whole concept!!
Ruthbru - that is too funny! We here in Florida are freezing today and it's about 50!
TampaBay - I take 3mg of Melatonin at night. Now if I wake up to go to the bathroom, etc., I can easily go right back to sleep. Before I took Melatonin, I would lay awake for hours. I take the pill. Never knew they have gummies.
-
Ann....Wanna go later? They are open until 8:00.
