hi all and welcome Runnermum and Catsme!

Congrats TT on the #1. I gained a bunch of weight during/after chemo. When the scale hit the 2 I freaked out. Heaviest I ever was in my life! That's when I started getting serious about diet and exercise. It took a few years but I lost the 25 lbs I gained from tx then started on the old stubborn fat. Been working on it ever since. :-)

Peregrinelady, that instructor done you wrong thrice: when she grabbed you, when she pulled on you, and when she didn't listen to you. There are so many of us who've had BC tx and need accommodations so we don't get hurt or make it worse. I wish there were more instructors like LB who care.

Cold here today but no s-n-o-w. Will hit the gym later for TM/weights.

Morning! Thank you for the warm welcomes! I have belonged to a few online running groups in past and alwAys enjoyed it. This thread is wonderful, makes me feel normal to be checking in and posting my exercise.

Heidihill...I love running! Have ran since Jr high cross country. Always feel so great after a run! Good luck with it! Lots of great beginning running programs online. If interested google couch to 5k or C25K. This plan starts you out doing a combo of running and walking. By the end of plan you will be running a 5k without walking. Believe it's 9 wks long.

Did 30 min of yoga and 45 min of running and walking on treadmill (15 min of walking/30 min of running) this morning. Chemo has def made me more short of breath and my pace is significantly slower but have found that running on my treadmill is way easier than outside right now so the treadmill it is for now. At least I can still run.

1 week from today chemo will be behind me! So excited! Happy Saturday everyone!

Anything you are able to do now (fast or slow) will help you bounce back quicker once you're done, Runner!

Since the wind stopped howling, the sun came out, and it's a balmy 39 degrees; DH & I went out and did more yard work this morning.....the leaves are gone and the flowers are dead or sleeping, so we are in late fall around here....boo hoo. We are now off to a high school football playoff game, so I'm off to dig out the tights, cuddle-duds, winter jacket and blankets! (Congratulations on your team's win last night, Runner....it turns out that we live 100 miles away from each other! )

Welcome to runnermum and catsme! I love this thread. I don'treally go anywhere else right now on the boards because I like the positivity and light here. I read here and there to get info, mostly, but each journey is their own and I want to focus on mine and not get mired in what might happen, what could be.

Runnermum, the treadmill is my friend for running right now too. I tend to go too fast outside anyway, so controlling the pace is important to me. I still do some run walking outside for fresh air, but dedicated runs are on the mill.

Have fun at the game, Ruth, and stay warm!

Haven't hit the gym yet but I will. Did errands then had a nice long nap. Need a bit of supper then off I go.

Chris, I've lost long posts too, it's very frustrating. Sometimes it's the site being wonky and that's annoying but a few times it was me. I'd preview my post then forget to submit it. D'oh!

    Nice, Badger!

Well, my football team lost 3-6. The defense was great; but as you can see by the score, the offense didn't show up. Sadness! I am contimplating going on the treadmill for awhile just to warm up!

Just the most glorious weekend here, so back on my bicycle. 2 rides later, I feel amazing and back on my game. Last day of the farmers market here, so packed to the gills with carrots, celery root, Romanesco broccoli, and end of season tomatoes and peppers. Enough for a feast for a few weeks.

Reading through all the comments about the benefits of exercise as we get older, I just made my plans for a blow-out holiday for 2019. Cycling in the Hebrides!!! I will be doing the easier routes as want to enjoy the experience. This includes a good bit of whisky tasting. Talk about an incentive to stay fit!! I will book about one year from now, and then figure out the flights for getting there. I think one more thing is cycle-hire as shipping my bicycle from Seattle to Edinburgh/Glasgow is an experience I can do without. I would suspect that the tour operator has these things figured out.

One place I want to visit is Iona which was one of the Dark Ages outposts where Christianity was preserved. I will do an escorted tour of a few cyclists. Lots to think about, but I think should be just a blast.

My new crankset is wonderful and much easier (not to mention smoother) cycling with fresh sprockets as opposed to the snaggle-toothed old ones.

I seem to be about 7 pounds leaner than a year ago.....and want to keep things that way.

Need to get tomorrow's dinner in the oven....braised lamb hearts. Have never made before, but hard to go wrong with wine, fresh herbs, and shallots. I will eat most of the week.

What a glorious weekend!!! The most gorgeous sunset ever to end the day. - Claire

    70 mins @gym - 30 TM, 30 weights, 10 yoga stretch.

We're having polenta tamale pie for Sunday dinner. I was inspired by a bunch of fresh cilantro at the market.

    Polenta Tamale Pie

Tamale pie, made with a cornmeal mush crust, dates back to 1911. In this recipe, we use ready-made polenta packaged in a roll. The spicy beef filling takes advantage of the excellent bottled salsas and canned refried beans now on market shelves.

    Yield: makes 8 servings

    Ingredients:

    1 pound ground beef

    1½ Tablespoons chili powder

    1 Tablespoon ground cumin

    1 16-oz bottle spicy salsa

    1 16-oz can refried beans

    1 14-oz can chicken broth

    ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro

2 one-pound rolls prepared polenta, sliced into 1/3-inch-thick rounds

3 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Preparation: Sauté beef in heavy large pot over medium-high heat until no longer pink, breaking up meat with back of fork, about 3 minutes. Add chili powder and cumin, stir 1 minute. Add salsa, beans and broth. Simmer until mixture thickens, about 10 minutes. Mix in half of the cilantro, season with salt and pepper to taste.

Oil a 13x9x2 glass baking dish. Place half of the polenta in dish. Top with sauce and half of the cheese, then remaining polenta, cheese and cilantro. (Can be made a day ahead. Cover with foil and chill.)

Pre-heat oven to 350 F. Bake freshly assembled pie, uncovered, until heated through and sauce bubbles, about 35 minutes. Or bake refrigerated pie, covered, for 20 minutes then uncover and bake until heated through, about 35 minutes.

Badger, the cold did arrive, didn't it! Darn. I dragged in my mandevilla hoping it would just be a night or two of cold but I think I'm delusional because I see a lot of 40s in the 10 day forecast. That polenta pie sounds delicious. Might think about if I can do that for dinner in the skillet since my oven broke.

Claire, a planned adventure is a great thing to look forward to, isn't it? You get the pleasure twice.

Yesterday was about 37 degrees and cloudy, but I forced myself out for a walk. Today it is sunny and cold but will be so much easier to draw me outside with the sunshine.

TH, I bet you could make the casserole in a skillet or the microwave. Once the beef is cooked, everything else just needs to heat through.

We got a frost last night so my annuals - petunias, marigolds & geraniums - are toast. Need to pull out the foliage but will save the dirt for a low spot in the lawn. DH says it's a bees' nest and has been mowing around it very carefully all summer. IDK where they're getting in, but we had seven bees in the house last week. I don't kill them but trap & release outside.

Just finishing laundry and the Sunday paper. Will hit the gym in a while then come home and fix supper.

Thanks, Badger, I agree. I guess I should tell her about being careful about pulling people's arms (she comes to our school once a week), but I am terrible about self advocating. Trying to get better about that after misdiagnosis. Wish me luck, I am going for a bike ride in 50 degree weather. Sounds balmy compared to some of your temps. Claire, you are my inspiration!

Claire, your upcoming trip sounds fabulous!

Yes, Peregrine, be your own advocate! You are not only helping yourself, but others who come after you!!

I went to Reset Yoga (what a lovely class!), and, since we are having coming company for dinner, I now have to make an actual meal where all the dishes are ready at the same time

I realize these trainers aren't medical professionals but the motto "First Do No Harm" should be uppermost in their minds. I have told anyone who's trained me that I need to go slow and be gentle at first. Unfortunately, we must be our own best advocates.

I printed a copy of the SUSO paper for trainers with guidelines for safe exercise and they have it on file at the gym. Maybe you could give your non-gentle trainer a copy. There are links in this awesome BCO thread started by our very own NatsFan. I'll also bump it to the top of Active Topics for you.

90 mins Garden & Sculpt cleaning out frostkill, and with every bend & stretch, feeling every kettlebell deadlift I did yesterday. We have a giant bed of hostas and they need to be tidied up before winter otherwise we have slugs overwintering (eeeew). Didn't get to that today as decided to leave that for a honey-do project for DH while I'm away next week.

LOL, Ruth. That is the part I hate about Thanksgiving - how to get everything cooked at the same time.

Took a trip to Trader Joe's and then another grocery store trying to remember where I got the prepared polenta. Decided it must have been the third grocery store, so instead I selected items for carne asada tonight. Went to the forest preserve for a 40 minute walk. Beautiful sunny, cool day but I didn't manage to choose a path with good fall color. I'll try again another day.

Been doing pretty well on my eating and not a linear downward line, but have settled about 2.5 lbs down. These days when I can barely lose any - I'll take it. But oh dear, Halloween is coming.

I spent more time outside than planned yesterday so counted Garden & Sculpt as my exercise for the day. Had my gymbag all packed but ran out of motivation after supper so will stop on the way home from work. Have a great week ahead, everyone!

Welcome, Catsme and Runnermom! . Cheryl, how was it? Clare, reads as a fun plan for 2019. Interesting reading of discussions over the weekend regarding fitness instructors and trainers.

If you live in a urban area, most likely a specialist breast cancer exercise class can be found. Please take advantage of these bc exercise programs. Suburban and rural areas, more difficult to find . Anyone with lymphedema, suggest instituting a no touch policy regarding your body. I have a girlfriend who let's no one touch her and if a yoga teacher does (which I have witnessed), she blurts out, get your hands off me and don't touch me. Honestly, she does. Trust me, she is never touched again, lol, they remember. Badger puts up the link repeatedly for making hard copies to give to trainers/fitness instructors regarding lymphedema. I've made copies and offered them to instructors. We who are in the bc realm, most times, the only folks who enlighten personal trainers and fitness instructors to what lymphedema is and how it should be handled when working with someone with the condition. Had a terrific turnout to Pink Pilates today and we went to coffee afterwards - nice! Must dash - teach body balance/flow in Folkestone.

    Happy #MuellerMonday everyone!*B-) cool

Update: after a bit of back and forth, we got our condo! It is going into escrow today. More details later (I don't want to put too much on the internet till I have at least told family :-))...pretty excited.

Meanwhile, my knee replacement surgery is Thursday. Been spending a lot of time getting ready. I did go out and get a Rx filled for walker, so look for me to be tearing up the neighborhood with it by Saturday.... :-)

    Will keep you all posted...

Congratulations on your condo, Octo! From what you have said, it sounds perfect for you. Good luck on your surgery Thursday (I suppose it wouldn't be appropriate to say "break a leg." ). It will be a good thing to have behind you and be on to the tearing up the neighborhood phase!

It is REALLY cold here. I hope the wind settles down for the trick-er-treaters tomorrow. Brrr.......I am soon off to Zumba and Yoga.

Welcome Catsme and Runnermum. Well back from an epic weekend in Las Vegas and in answer to your question LB the event was fabulous.

Octo congrats on the condo and will be thinking of you on Thursday. Claire your trip sounds wonderful lots of excitement in the planning. Ruth we had to go to Las Vegas to cool down please some of your nice cool weather would be appreciated.

So I went to Las Vegas for a Les Mills Super Quarterly and on Friday night we did Body Pump and Combat masterclasses, then Saturday I about knocked myself out I did RPM (45 minute cycle) Sh'bam, Grit Strength, 2 Sprint classes (30 minute HIIT on a bike) - I am such a sucker for flattery, I was slated for the 12.45pm class but my former instructor/master trainer who moved to San Diego insisted I come in and do the noon class with him then talked me into doing the one I had actually signed up for, then did a not so great Body Jam class - was feeling really tired by this time then Body Flow/Balance - LB I only did the Tai Chi and the meditation as I was busy taking pictures while my young friends were on stage, but I loved the meditation and Susan did a beautiful meditation Okay peeps these photos are for LB - I got to spend some wonderful time with Susan and gave her a hug from you and if you go on my FB page there are photos but these are for you.

I though you'd like to see her on stage and that is my BF rookie beside her - they were amazing.

We stayed at Caesars Palace, oh my, we had an amazing room with the biggest jetted bathtub, I spent an hour in there Saturday night it was heaven. Didn't win my fortune but did come away with $150 my friend who I went with on the other hand (who got the free is a high roller) came home with thousands of dollars, like they say you have to spend money to make it she plays $25 a hand every hand, me I won on the one cent machine,

Cheryl: I'm exhausted just reading about your weekend - You are my hero! Congrates on your winnings.

    Welcome to runnermum and catsme!

Hi Everyone! Just caught up reading on a few pages that I'm behind since I last posted. Developed a UTI earlier last week (ugh). I had so many of those during chemo and while taking Arimidex. I laid low for many days letting the Cipro do its thing.

My town (population 19,000) has a HUGE festival that was held this past Saturday. We get around 150,000 visitors that day! It's crazy fun to say the least. I was supposed to park cars as a fundraiser for my church but I got sick to my stomach the night before so I missed doing that. I felt better later in the day and was able to make it to the festival to walk around.

Feeling more like myself today so walked/ran late this afternoon. So cool and refreshing!

Looking forward to Halloween tomorrow night.

hello to all the newbees and oldbees! I've been not doing a ton of outside exercise, but lots of walking. Put on 14K on a college campus football game reunion and met up with DS for a few hours. Was good all the way around. I'll have to do Pilates at home b4 work, or the exercise won't happen!

Thanks, Badger, for posting the link to the SUSO paper. I will print it off and try to show it to her without offending. She is fairly young and enthusiastic so I don't want to discourage that. Lilac, I was so closed to yelling at her like your friend. If I am in a similar position again, I will yell! Walked for an hour and a half yesterday with a friend, and Murphy, of course. Beautiful fall day, but snow expected later this week. Ugh!

Mornin' Glories! Hit the gym last night after work - 30 TM/30 weights. The club was packed so although it's great to get in a workout before I get home, I now see why I go later. The club manager fixed my HR monitor by putting in a new battery. LOL I've worn one out since July! :-)

Runnermum, I am a long term beginner, lol. I have used C25K but can't make myself run on a regular enough basis so get out of running shape easily. Now I will up my daily run to 2K instead of 1 mile.

Claire, what a great trip you have planned. Wonderland, you look ready for Halloween. Cheryl, I'm tired just reading what you did.  Still have to see Las Vegas one day.

LilacBlue, seated tai chi sounds very interesting. One could do it on a park bench.

Did my 1 mile run and then Zumba Step and Zumba Toning with 1.5kg/3.3lb weights.

I just started a 21 day jump start program. Learned I have balance issues. I think what i really learned is my legs are weak. Need to focus more on the lower half of my body. Yesterday was an hour of strength/muscle training. See a personal trainer on Thursday. I know what I want to discuss. Today I am taking a team exercise/strength class. Should be fun.

I just had my 6 month blood work. After 4 months of going to the gym and the loss of 10 lbs. My blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglycerides are the lowest they have been in over 8 years. All are down 10 points or more. This says a lot to me about the benefits of exercise. I had changed my diet about a year ago and did not see any change in my blood work but did lose weight. The two together are a win. Nothing is a guarantee but this change is a big plus.
