Pat - so sorry about the delayed trip. It looks like Ireland is getting pounded.
TwoHobbies - strange series between your Cubs and my Nats. And that Game 5 was one of the strangest games I've ever seen. Frankly, I thought neither team played well and neither manager was at the top of his game. I think the Nats would have been in just as much trouble against the Dodgers as the Cubs are.
Power washed all the patio furniture at the cabin before putting it away for the season, so got in some good upper body work. Had my fitness class this morning, and am now waiting for Comcast service to come fix our cable and internet - it keeps going out.I hate Comcast!!!!!
-
Lilac: Congratulations on your certification! That's awesome!
Vargadoll: Your church's gym sounds amazing!
cdv: May Tamox. continue with no side effects.
KB: Wish I could help you eat your potatoes. Love fresh potatoes!
pat: Sorry about the delays in your trip. Glad you were able to attend the scattering of your friend's ashes. That's so special.
Nats: Ugh! Cable!
Hi Everybody! I walked/ran yesterday. Today I pushed mowed for 2 hours.
-
Bit the bullet and cleaned my house today. I went Zumba, and yoga tonight.
*don't forget to get your flu shots, I did mine today
-
pat01, grief does wash over us like waves. I hope your trip brings you solace.
Lilac, your trip to London sounds lovely. I'm so interested in the work you do. Not that I don't love teaching thirteen year olds reading and writing, but the energy is so different from teaching adults health and wellness.
I spent the day on Sunday planting peonies in front of the rock wall alongside our veggie garden. By 3:30 I was spent and came inside for a nap. I'm having a difficult time with hot flashes waking me in the night again. Insomnia follows. For a while I seemed to be free of this side effect but now it's back. I've been going to work each day with extra bags, under my eyes of course. I'm seriously thinking of wearing sunglasses while I teach class. The new cool look for eighth grade. Ugh. -
Good cardio session at the fitness center today. I tried the new fancy rowing machine for the first time, and after about 10 minutes I really began feeling it in my abs, so I will definitely add that to my workouts.
Do any of you use a spiralizer for cooking? Maybe everyone knows about them already, but they're new to me. Our grocery store has pre-packaged fresh spiralized zucchini and squash and we tried it a few times. It's amazing how you can use those veggies in the place of spaghetti - much healthier and just as tasty. We've been enjoying the spiralized veggies it so much that I finally bought my own spiralizer last week. I bought some eggplant today, so will try spiralizing that one night this week.
Got my flu shot last month, so I'm good to go for this winter!
-
Went to a 75 minute Gentle Yoga class at lunch...my second class since exchange 9/8....this was more challenging than the Yin Yoga I tried last week...so modified a lot of postures, but so happy to be making my baby steps back to exercise.
-
It feels so good when you CAN exercise, doesn't it?!!!!!!
I subbed today (Falconer, 8th grade English.....The Outsiders....very fun). It was so nice out after school that I dog-napped the puppies, called my friend with the two dogs, & we went for a walk in the park. Two ladies, four bouncy dogs; I'm sure we are quite the sight! My Book Club meets tonight.....more fun (and dessert)!
-
Funny! We read Outsiders in seventh grade at my school. I run extra help at lunch and was reading with a boy who was struggling to understand the book. I wonder, what do you think, Ruth, is the book getting too dated for the kids to understand? I had to explain a lot of the cultural references that made no sense at all to the little twelve year old boy sitting next to me.
-
Did 45 minutes at the gym today. I will have to give the rowing machine a try. I have not tried the rowing machine yet. I am working on my legs and abs so it sounds like a good addition.
-
Falconer, they had read the book and were watching the 1983 movie; which is very, very good, and I think brings it more alive to the kids. We did make some comments on the tiny TVs, and the fact the people could smoke cigarettes in the hospital etc. etc. I think it would still make for a good discussion type-casting/wanting to shun and hurt people who are 'different' than you (pretty relevant nowadays), the importance of family (and what makes a family).....maybe some themes too deep for 7th graders, but the 8th graders were very engaged.
-
Falconer: Sorry about the hot flashes. Ugh.
Nats: Is the rowing machine a Concept 2?
Trmtab: Excellent!
Tonight I attended a program at a local football field where all the county high school bands perform one of their half time shows. It's something I look forward to it every year because I was in the band and love watching the shows. Well, one high school put on the weirdest themed show I have ever seen! It was "the side of cancer no one talks about." As you can imagine, I couldn't wait to see what they were going to do. Are you ready for this? A bride and groom get married. The bride gets sick and dies (2 students were dressed up like a doctor and nurse on "stage" with the bride). There was a prop that showed the bride's heart beating and then it becomes a flat line when she dies. So freaking strange! Oh and get this - the prop with the heart beat fall over and hurt one of the band members. She was on the ground but was able to get up. Also, during the show a trailer (the bride died on the trailer) was pulled out onto the field and ran over one of the drummers! He was on the ground also and people were circled around him like an injured football player. He finally stood up and was able to walk off the field. I can't make this shit up if I tried!!!
Walked/ran in the afternoon.

Good Grief! How weird!
-
I agree with Ruth, weird! It is odd what people think is being supportive. My local newspaper changed the border on their online version from blue to pink and it took me a minute to figure out why. I haven't said anything to the "boobs and beer" sponsors because they are really nice people. So I haven't been here in a while because we moved and did not have internet, but also because I am embarrassed to say that I have been too busy and tired to exercise regularly. Now that we are a little settled (living in our travel trailer until house is finished) I did manage to take a yoga class yesterday. I also am still walking on weekends and hoping to leave work earlier so at least I am walking every day. It helps to read about your exercise to make me realize how lacking mine has been. Thanks for the incentive. -
The Walking Women went down to a State Park about an hour away and walked the trails. Very fun! I plan on Zumba and Yoga tonight....my triple exercise day......
-
Wonderland, it sounds like an episode of Glee meets The Onion. When I was in marching band the weirdest it got was playing She Blinded Me with Science, which just somehow didn't come across despite our good horn section and formation practice. 😜 Ah, band!
-
wonderland- that show sounds very strange.
Falconer- my night sweats are worse when I eat sugar or lots of carbs.
Nats- I love my spiralizer for making zoodles (zucchini noodles). We never cook real pasta anymore.
Pat- I hope you got out and that you have a great trip.
Cleaned my house top to bottom on Sunday. That should count for something.
Hives are cranked up this week and my exercise is suffering. Dr appt in Boston at Brigham and Women's is on Monday. Hoping for some insight.
-
Ginger thanks for the heads up. I'll pay attention to what foods may make the hot flashes worse. Sorry you're still having hives flare up. Must be hard to deal with while working.
I ran 2.5 miles today and enjoyed the perfect sunshine. I'm reading Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. What a great book. I happened to notice in the author bio that he works at Brigham and Women's Hospital. If you see him there, Ginger, please thank him for me. I hope they can help you there.
-
I sure hope they can figure out the hives, Ginger. That sounds miserable!
-
I just spent my few before I have to get ready for workminutes typing out responses and it all discappeared. I'll try again tonight. In the meantime, have a great day everyone! I hope they can figure out what is causing the hives, Ginger. I hadn't thought about food interactions with hormonal treatments, but I'm going to watch for that. I read somewhere that tamoxifen can be dehydrating, so I've upped my water. Even if it's not, making sure to stay hydrated is not a bad thing.
-
falconer, I hear yu on the hot flashes. I started letrozole in jan 2017. As I write this I'm sweating! My hot flashes are different than my "natural" ones. I now feel like I'm having an anxiety attack (I'm making that up b/c I never had one), then I get really warm and stay warn for about 15 minutes.
I walked 90 min yesterday and my hip is killing me. I wish I would get that muscle working feeling, but no matter how much I do I just get fatigued and joint sore, but no muscle soreness. Press on people!
-
Sorry that I've been MIA, but my consulting ship came in!!! Just slammed, including a lot of 14 hour days, but I got the report out on time. Will be "Merry Christmas to me", as expect to be paid around then. This is on top of my nonprofit work. I am doing a different project this weekend. I did manage to exercise throughout.
Sunday was a break (?) as had two friends visit me in Seattle. One was from my Columbia University Art History days, and she had a career as a professor. I hadn't seen her for decades. She was in Seattle doing an interview for a new book she is writing. It was the most glorious day, and I was able to snag a table overlooking the Puget Sound at the restaurant next door. She had this view.
Here is one of me. It's a small and charming garden. I was wearing my finery.
Afterwards, I collected my business partner at the airport and was able to show her my place. She was amazed at how nice it is, and also that I really am only two miles from dairy cattle and pumpkin fields. She also loved the colors. Here is a picture from my run a couple of nights ago. It's really fabulous to have this place to walk, and the second half of my run takes me back into the walking trails. Note that the weather has changed.
I served one of my soups which I thought would be a good antidote to air travel. Very nourishing with all the fresh vegetables, not to mention tasty. Herbs from my garden. I am bringing it in to the nonprofit as have a vat left.
I also took my friend through part of Seattle including the Space Needle, Monorail and wine bar. She got why I like the place so much and it was fun to do a tasting.
I get my bicycle back from the shop today. Hope they have found the flats culprit as getting stranded in the rain isn't my idea of a good time. My jacket with the "tail light" should arrive soon. (The light is built in and covers my tail.) Designed in Scotland where I suspect they know a thing or two about cycling in dampness and low light (brand is Endura).
I had my mammogram a week ago. Uneventful other than chatting with the X-ray tech. She was seriously bummed because she had done the imaging on several women who had come in because of "Pinktober" and they thought it was time to follow up on the lump they had noticed. They were in their 40s and had not done a baseline. She could tell that this was most likely not good news. She was impressed by how fit I am (which BTW makes it difficult to position me because of my pectorals). I walked both ways from the bus stop and met a friend for drinks at the wine bar afterwards. I should hear for sure about the results in a couple of days.
Hope to get back on my bicycle this weekend, even if it's less than stellar cycling weather. Because I can feel the difference, even with all the other exercise I get.
Looking forward to a relatively uneventful weekend, even if I will be watching an audience intercept interview project in another city. My business partner will be there. This one is the next data analysis and reporting, but should be easier than reporting on 5 focus groups. But I have to code the open ends. Wish me luck!!!!
I have a facial on Saturday, and think it will be high time. I also need to edit out a few more wardrobe items that no longer make the cut. I have done so well in my online forays that I can do this. Yesterday's outfit hit the trifecta of stylish, toasty, and flattering. Did I mention that I got it all for a song??? Life is good. - Claire

Wonder - agree that it was very odd band "tribute" to cancer patients. Ginger - I'm so sorry on the hives. Glad you're escalating the issue to B&W. Cdv and 2Fun - I am the hot flash queen! The good thing is that they do quiet down after you're off AIs. I was on AIs for 5 years, then off for 3, then went back on last year when the BCI test showed I'd benefit from 10 years - so I know from first hand experience that there's a definite improvement being off AIs, and a definite worsening when you're on them. I get hot flashes occasionally during the day, especially when I'm exercising. Someone here shared that they had a small battery operated fan made by Innobay (available on Amazon) that they clipped on the treadmill, so I use that at the fitness center. It's been a lifesaver.
For night flashes, DH installed a remote for the ceiling fan so I can grab the control off the nightstand and rev the fan up to high speed as needed. I also have the windows open in winter, and in summer I have a room A/C so I can crank the temp down in the room overnight (cheaper than turning down the central air to turn the whole house into an ice house every night). I bought DH extra blankets and an electric blanket for his side of the bed, so that he and the dog can huddle under them to keep warm while I'm on top of the covers desperately trying to cool off.
Wonder - the rowing machine is a LifeFitness GX. The water is in the round red tank at the front. I'm really liking (and feeling).
Had a good strength session at the fitness center yesterday. One of the trainers there helped me design a solid hour long weights/strength session that works me from head to toe, using a combination of machines, free weights, and other equipment (like using a ball for wall squats). I really needed to shake things up with my workout, so I'm enjoying the change of pace. Cardio on tap today - leaving right when I finish this post.
Edited to add: I "smalled up" the pictures when drafting my post, but when I saved it the pix enlarged. Weird.
-
Hi all...I've also been basically MIA, and can't quite catch up: partially a bit of consulting work myself, editing a book chapter, working at a weekend retreat, and then I caught a cold that left me sleeping for three days. Plus trying to keep my stepmom, who was evacuated in the wine country fires, from going nuts (her house is fine, so she is blessed, but it will be another few days at least before she can get back in. No power still as of last night)....AND I am trying to get ready for my knee replacement surgery November 2nd!
Fortunately, after what seemed like an endless round of tests, I am good to go! All the lab work came back perfectly normal. Yay for that. I've been trying to swim through all this and doing reasonably well with that. Plan to swim today again. It may be a bit after surgery before I am cleared for the pool...I am also getting exercise cleaning up my bedroom: doctor's orders that clutter be minimized to make it easier to get around after surgery...
Take care and keep moving, all!
-
In my second week of release from post-op restrictions, went to my 75 minute Yin Yoga class last night. Only one class last week, two this week, edging back but can already feel benefits. The last week or so before being able to exercise, I kept on thinking, "I need a massage" ...I think I just needed some deep yoga stretch classes!
Tomorrow my exercise is walking in the homecoming parade (2.5 miles) for the school I work at.
Happy fall, TT
-
2Fun, and I'm with you on the hip! Yesterday I jogged 2.5 miles and my hip is blasting me with soreness today. Boo. But exercise is key so I just try to ignore it. !
Octo, glad you got clearance for surgery. -
Nice pictures, Claire. Sounds like a fun time with your old friend!
Trm, yes, yoga is usually the answer to aches and crinks.
Octo, glad that you will be getting the surgery done and soon be on the recovery trail. Your exercise ahead of time will make for a much quicker recovery time.
DH and I did lots of yard work today (it's the time of the year when all those nice, big trees in the yard don't seem so nice any more......we raked until we ran out of bags & then quit for the day. Since it was gorgeous out, I walked the puppies (I am a very good dog-grandmother!) and did an hour of spot toning with Denise Austin.
-
Resuming workouts since cardiologist gave me the "all clear" last week to resume my normal activity.
-
I can verify Ruth's dog-grandmother tendencies. When she and her DH were visiting, every time I looked they were either carrying our min pin Mikey, or he was cuddling in their laps. I don't think his feet touched the ground the whole time they were here!
Octo - hooray on the surgery clearance, and Mommy hooray on the all clear for activities!!!!
-
Thanks Nats. Just got a bit of exercise by taking down my Spring/Summer curtains and put up the Fall/Winter ones
-
Two - sorry about your Cubs. I think our teams just wore each other out during our series, leaving the winning team as easy pickings for the Dodgers.
