If you use the baby weight yarn you will more than likely have to add the number of single or double crochet chains at the beginning of the square because the yarn is lighter weight than the 4-ply yarn normally used. We have indeed used squares made from the light weight yarn, as well as square from the thicker yarn, i.e. lion brand, etc.
-
also an idea for very light weight yarn is to double it ... i mix ivory/white with a color ....
-
Madison, Thanks for the info on the light weight yarn, I knew that I would have to add to the foundation row as well as increase the total number of rows to get the correct size, I just didn't know if any of that weight yarn had been used. The other squares I sent were traditional worsted weight yarns. The last thing I remember crocheting with sport weight yarn was a sweater I made while in high school out of orange/lime green/ white verigated yarn.
Jenni, the yarn I bought is a 'self patterning' yarn as opposed to a regular verigated yarn and I have admired it on-line ( http://www.bernat.com/product.php?P=1&LGC=babyjacquards ) but not tried any of it yet. I don't know if adding white to it would show the pattern well.

How awesome is this! I can crochet and have done many afghans years ago, but they were just one continual block. How can I contribute to this!

Hi Dawn and welcome!
We use washable yarn and the "squares" are 7 x 9. Any pattern - crochet or knit. They are bordered with a double crochet. When you have some ready we'll send you one of our addresses.
Madison....so pretty. I promise to get your box off the end of this week.
As Madison said, we could not do these without each and everyone of you. Thank you so much.

I would love to get in on this. I knit though. I can crochet but it is self taught and not great. Can someone send me info? 7x9 correct? Any yarn? Would love some patterns.
-
Sherry,
Welcome, we love this project and know that you will also come to love it.
The yarn must be washable yarn - - no wool content.
I will PM the knitting instructions for 7x9 squares. There are several patterns you can chose from in these instructions.
The instructions are in my home computer so I send you the instructions this evening.
Hugs, and Welcome,
Madison

Hi girls.....
So nice to see more ladies helping us send hugs. I delivered the hugaghan to my neighbor today. She's an amazing woman. She's fought leukemia for 35 years, has beat breast cancer, colon cancer, brain cancer and is now battling mets to the bone. Through all this - she has continued to help care for her granddaughters while mom and dad work. Recently she had to stop and it broke her heart.
We had a wonderful visit and she wants each of you to know how special her hugaghan is. She thanks you from the bottom of her heart.
Thanks again for all you guys do.
Hugs

Liz, your neighbor is really an amazing woman. I hope the hugaghan continues to give her warmth and hugs.
-
Sherry,
I sent you a PM with basic knit patterns for our 7x9 "Squares" used in our hugaghans.
-
Madison ~ did you get a box of squares from me? USPS says it was delivered on August 13th. The latest afghan is very pretty!
Sharon50 ~ hugs back to you!
Dawn, MsSherry ~ welcome to the project!
Liz ~ wow, what a fighter your neighbor is! I'm glad we could give her some hugs.Artemis
-
Artemis,
Yes, I did get your wonderful squares. Also the something extra is really appreciated. I just love your smiley face and heart squares...they add something special to the hugaghans.
-
Thank you, Madison. Those squares were fun to make.
-
Liz - So nice your neighbor got one...she has been though way too much! Also, makmak gave me more squares that she knitted...I will border hers and mine and send them next week.
Artemis - Can't wait to "see" your square on an afghan.

Just in case anyone didn't see Elizabeth's thread about her hugagan I copied it here.
From konakat,
There was a package waiting for me at the postal outlet and I didn't know where or whom it was from. I finally got my sister to take me and I saw Hugaghanon the outside and Dee, Baton Rouge!!!!! I could barely get back to my sister's car to open it. Thank goodness she has a swiss army knife and helped me get it open.
It is so beautiful, soft, big, warm, colourful, absoluely perfect. I am both thrlled and honoured to receive such a gift. Words cannot express how touched I feel. Thank-you.
Elizabeth

kona - So glad you received one. Each "square" is created with lots of love and thoughtfulness in mind! Be well and warm (this winter)!

I am about finished this skein of moss green and I bought a skein of pale yellow on Sunday. When I get about 20 I will package them up and mail (about half way there now.) Stay well.
-
MsSherryinFL Hi. I am a knitter too. Usually I just do garter stitch - it's fast and reversible. I think I'm using size 8 needles, Red Heart yarn, cast on 23 stitches and knit away. 23 stitches usually equals 7" wide for me.
-
liz & madison - are there still names on the list ?
NFL is starting up i should be getting some squares done now
