Here is the link for the squares
http://www.warmupamerica.com/join.html
I will collect and sew them together and add a border and send them on.
Shall we do various colors...one color theme...two or three colors???
Let's make sure we all are using the same type and weight of yarn so our squares are equal when washed.
I AM SOOO EXCITED!

And a special thanks to Madison for this wonderful idea. I'm at work so will post more information or answer questions later.
Hugs all and all are welcome to join us!

I've seen this type of afghan done with all primary colors and kelly green---then joined with black----came out very "stained glass" looking and quite pretty. Would look nice if everyone just made squares with the stitch patterns offered of their choice for texture.
-
I WANNA PLAY!!! unfortunately I only know granny squares and they're not 7x9..... going to try it by following the instructions.
-
Vickie, thanks for agreeing to be the "point" person on this! I don't know why my original post suggesting the WarmupAmerica website came up as "Anonymous" but I'm excited about being part of this project!
I'm not great with colors but suggest we all use worsted weight, machine washable/dryable yarn. -
Hi Kimmy...hmmm...maybe a granny square with a single crochet border on two ends to make up the 2 extra inches you will need. (?)...gee honey...if you can make a granny square you can probaby make just about anything!!
-
Vickie,
Great idea to start this as a separate thread.
I don't know if we decided on colors.
Does anyone remember the song by Dolly Partin "Coat of many colors" that talks about patching a coat of many colors together with love:
COAT OF MANY COLOURS by Dolly Parton
Back through the years I go wondering once again
Back to the seasons of my/ youth
I re/call a box of rags that someone gave us
And how my mamma put these rags to/ use
There were/ rags of many colours, and every piece was small
And I didn't have a coat and it was/ way down in the fall
Mamma/ sewed the rags together,sewing/ ever piece with love
She made my/ coat of many colours,that/ I was so proud of
As she sewed she told the story from the bible she had read
About a coat of many colours Joseph/ wore and they she said
Per/haps this coat will bring you ,much/ love and happiness
And I just could/n't wait to wear it
And mamma/ blessed it with a kiss
My. coat of many colours that/ mamma made for me
Made only rags, but I/ wore it so proud/ly
Al/though we had no money.oh I/ was rich as I could be
In my/ coat of many colours,my/ mamma made for me
So with patches on my breaches and holes in both my shoes
In my coat of many colours,I/ hurried off to school
Just to/ find the others laughing and mak/in' fun of me
In my/ coat of many colours,my/ mamma made for/ me
Oh,I couldn't understand it,for I felt I was rich
And I told them of the love my mamma/ sewed in ever stitch
And I/ told them all the story ,mamma/ told me while she sewed
And how my/ coat of many colours is worth/ more than all of their clothes
They/ didn't under stand it and I/ tried to make them see
That/ one is only poor only/ if they choose to be
Now I/ know we have no money, but I'm as/ rich as I could be
In my/ coat of many colours, my/ mamma made for me
Yeah just for me.....

Madison I do love that song by Dolly. She puts her heart into everything she writes. It is surprising how many songs she wrote for others to record. I still liek her version of "I Will Always Love You".
Vickie, how great are you to take this on? I will help wherever you need me to.
What do think if I printed up the song lyrics and put in in nice font and colors and on a nice stationary with pink ribbons and such? We could include in each afghan we send out.
Can't wait to get started! I need to look at the pattern and then hunt up some yarn.
Helpful number??? I bought the space bags and stored the yarn in there. I can see what there is, can sort of count how many skeins and it lays much flatter and takes up less space. Better still, the wools won't get moths!
I agree with Towanda to make it worsted weight and definitely washable!
Love and hugs,
Beth -
Oh Madison...we were thinking alike. I too was think of the Dolly Pardon song! I think it's a perfect idea so lets go with it...a blanket of many colors!!!
Worsted weight and washable is a must.
The song lyrics with the afghans is a great idea. I am going to try to start crocheting tonight so let me know when you have enough done that you want to send. No special number...do what you can...whatever pattern suits you...whatever color you like...make sure they are the correct size
AND WE'RE OFF!!!
love
Vickie -
I have a bunch of the lion brand thick and quick Chenille yarn like this:
http://www.yarnsupply.com/lionbrand-chenillethickquickyarn.html
Do you think that would work or would it be too different from worsted weight. It is washable and is very soft, but I don't know if it would "fit in". very well.
I also have a TON of the eyelash yarn and soft furry yarn. Do you think it would look good worked with a worsted weight yarn? I love all the fuzzy yarns.
Deb C. -
So how many squares are each of us making? Granny squares or other patterns - just remember they have to be 7" bu 9".
You could sew your name on each square. Then the person could see how many different people cared!
Sounds like a fun project.
Nicki -
I can't crochet so I can't help but I just wanted to tell you what a wonderful idea this is. (Can't knit either) It is just a wonderful idea.
I'm proud of you!!!! Way to go.
Brenda -
Debc, that would be a nice touch to make it really persoanl from the crafter to make it with their own yarn and make what they like!
I have some leftover of the Lion Brand Suede too!
Love and hugs,
Beth -
DebC...you can use the eyelash, the furry and the suede yarn as they will wash the same as the worsted weight and will make a fun addition to the end result! Lets start ladies...use your own creativity and I will put it all together. I am going to make a couple of squares tonight if I can stay awake...arm problems and really tired for some reason.
Love ya ladies
Vickie -
I don't know how to crochet, so can't join in. I can knit - I know one basic stitch. Can't wait to see pics of the finished product.
-
I only have 1/2 a square done. Single stitch -- I really like Granny squares, but its time to learn how to do something else... I really wish I had paid more attention to my grandma when she was trying to teach me this........
-
So...how are we ging to nominate someone to get the end result of our craftyness??? What circle girl needs a hug right now??? Put your thinking caps on girls
Deb C -
Just wanted to say it's a wonderful idea--I wish I could crochet! Maybe someday!
-
So can some be knitted and some crocheted?
I can knit- I think I remember how!! -
Yup they can be knitted too...just as long as they are all the same size!!! Oh this is really getting exciting! I think the size is 7x9 if we make the squares according to the link above.
Love
Vickie -
Ok- chemo brain better cooperate!
Knitting!!!!!
Kimmy and Karen and Naniam and Bayore! We can knit! -
Oh gosh this is a wonderful thing you all are doing !!
Madison what a good ideal you came up with, and Vickie how
nice of you to agree to pull it all together !! I wish I could knit or crochet. Maybe I could send someone some yarn
to help out ?? Let me know I would be happy too !
Hugs,
Carrie -
Hey Vickie-
Look here
http://www.warmupamerica.com/people.html
and scroll down to the last photo. Someone mentioned connecting the using black yarn to connect the squares and how that makes it look like stained glass...It really does!
I have a bunch of black Chenille yarn that I could send you to connect the squares if you want to do one that way...let me know later
I'm excited!
Deb C
Oh, and I have no idea how I posted up above with out my sign in name...was that bad dog all the way up here in Alaska??? -
I hope that dog has snow shoes deb!!
-
NS, I can't knit either!!!!!!
I know you aren't asking for any donations but I am like Carrie, if you need yarn will buy and send some.
Oh, I am just not a crafts person - cross stitch and a little needlepoint was all I have ever done.- and not even that in the last 10 years. Now I wish I could do these just to help.
Brenda -
Deb...I just checked out the picture and it is BEAUTIFUL! YES WE CAN DO THIS LADIES.
I personally have tons of yarn so I'm all set and like Brenda...if you need yarn just let me know. -
i've got buttloads (THAT MEANS LOTS) I'm a yarn collector.... what I don't have is skill. I'll try though...
here's the first one.
it really isn't crooked, just not laying completely flat... will this plain stitch be ok? -
WOW-GREAT.
Deb, I actually have a crochet book with that pattern, it really is a beautiful afghan.
Vickie, what can I say...you are great to stitch these together. I can also help with the stitching, costs, etc.
I have an empty nest - kids are grown (except for my 2 dogs and 1 cat).
I NEEDED to do something worthwhile again. I remember DebC mentioning in a post early in December how she had helped someone and how much it helped her. This, I think, will feel the same way.
I also do not think that perfection in our stitches will be as important as the love and care that goes into each square.
Please, if you feel you can't make a square, log onto one of the beginning crochet websites and they will "walk" you through the process. There are also beginning crochet books that have VERY SIMPLE SQUARE stitches.
Oh, I am so excited.
HUGS Madison -
I think we should make one for dressmaker and lilia.... they've done lots of work for the quilts.... this would be something that they don't have to make... just a thought.
-
Yep, I agree Kimmytoo.
This project IN NO WAY takes away from the hard and loving work dressmaker and lilia have done for those who have received the quilts. Nor do we want to take away any of their fund raising efforts because they do need funds to complete each of these quilts. Please ladies, remember to help dressmaker and lilia when they need us.
The quilts are BEAUTIFUL, made by loving hands, with love in their hearts.
Madison -
Today in the "holding room", while waiting to see my onc, I saw several women and men who were waiting to receive chemo that had crochet (or knited) blankets in their arms or drapped across their legs.
My onc visit today just confirmed that this will be a worthwhile project.
