Hello, All!

Well, with most of my treatment behind me, I decided the next step on my journey is to try to lose the 70 pounds that is on my beautiful body and get into shape.  This is not only to keep the cancer away (hopefully, but of course, not guaranteed) but to make an exciting new life, now that I know I have life for awhile anyway.

My plan--eat about 1500 calories (equiv of weight watchers 25 points) of healthier foods, with 1-2 free days a month for holidays, BDs, etc.  Drinking more water & less juice.  And exercising for 30+ min at least 5 days a week.

Does anyone want to lose weight or maintain their weight with me?  We can maybe check in with each other once a week for accountibility, whether we lose weight or not.  Anyone else joining can do whatever they want to lose/maintain healthy eating.

OK--here goes!

I have 70 pounds to lose...starting my healthy journey now at 8:33 am on 10/10/2009.  I'll check back soon!

Hi Cake - I'll join you!  I too would like to lose at least 70 lbs.  Just this past Monday, I have been able to start walking again - I finished Rads Sept 10 and am just comfortably able to wear an underwire bra again!  I will also check in regularly!  Wishing you strength and willpower on this journey!!  LOL

I am here, too!! We can bounce ideas off each other. I finished chemo and rads last year. I finished Herceptin this past March. I had my exchange of perm implants in June that failed, so now I am 5 weeks out of DIEP procedure. I have Stage 2 in December. That will be my fifth surgery this year alone so needless to say, exercise has not been my forte. I am nearly 25 lbs heavier from diagnosis, but could afford to lose another 15 on top of that!  You sound like you have a good plan.......Thanks for posting!

I am game - long shot since I am still on that chemo and steroids.......  I am now 234, 5ft 8 and my goal is 70 lbs [a little far-fetched] but worth the try.  Since diagnosis I have cut back on say - approx 1000 cals daily but decreased activity a bunch - almost 75% so nothing was lost - plus possible gain with the chemo.

Plan: 20 grams of protein drink before bedtime - circa 7p - with no carbs after 4pm.  I also plan to start walking again to return to jogging [if I could], but definitely aim to walk 2-3 times weekly for approx 1-3 miles for a start.  I will check back in 5 days.

Count me in.  I gained 30 pounds during chemo and am struggling to get it off...

I am on a low fat, low dairy and eggs, no meat diet which a doctor put me on.  It seems to be helping but the weight loss is gonna take forever.

    Good morning all!

I'd like to join you.. I've found support, structure and accountability help a lot  in this struggle with weight.

I've got 50 pounds to lose and it's coming off  slowly due to Arimidex--at least that's my excuse.  I exercised faithfully all during treatments but have been less consistent since I went back to work.  It's so easy to let everything else take  priority and let the exercise and eating plan slip.  This has got to stop and I'm starting NOW with your help. Hiking trails here I come!

Thanks for getting the ball rolling, Cake, and good luck to all.

Awesome, fmakj!  We have the same to lose, so that'll be cool!

Warrior517--You ARE a warrior with 5 surgeries!  You go girl, I'm so proud of you!  Another reason I am doing this, is that I am scheduling a double mx w/diep construction which will prob due in June 2010 (already did the lump/rad but wanted to research the mx before I did...now I'm going to do) since rads skin has to heal.  I dont want to be 70 lbs overweight!  Maybe 20 if they need my fat, but not 70!  I want to be a BABE by then, ha ha!

Awesome Activern!  Sounds like you have a great plan. And you've got things still going on, so whatever small changes, even if it's a goal of NOT gaining weight on chemo would be great, right?  One change I am making this time around is that I am REFUSING to get weird about losing weight...life is too precious to waste on anything unproductive like I used to (beat myself up, etc.).  Of course...I might need help with that part, but that's why I'm here, right? Laughing

Mandy--Welcome and sounds great what you're doing.  I'm sorry it's so slow.  :-)

Lindisimma--you go girl!  Glad it's coming off (instead of coming on, LOL!)  You're ahead of me with exercise and losing.  I was exercising until I got stitches in my foot (TOTAL OUCH!) and am just getting over that.  I'm going to do the Wii in a bit for 1/2 hour and do more strength exercises instead of pounding on my foot.  I'm glad you're stopping the slip and starting up again!

Thank you guys for joining with me.  I SUCK at losing weight, but this is the first place I have found that I feel like such a "group" with all of us going through bc in some way or another.  It'll be nice to share "Weight War Stories" as a change in pace from "bc war stories," ha ha, right?!

PS--I made a HUGE breakfast for my hubby (who needed some love this am) and 4 kids...bacon, eggs, biscuits.  I had...2 eggs, a nice sized apple and a glass of water with a cup of coffee.  ONE victory down, YEAH!

Watch out world...The Babes are comin out!

Cool, bermudagem!  We'll all figure this out together.  Even if it's slow, right?

How's everyone doing?  I have to say, I overate some, and exercised some.  Kids home from school for 3-day weekend, and hubby decided to splurge on a sweet day, so not as good as I hoped.  but I jumped back on the bandwagon!  Will weigh in on Sunday

    well,

sign me right up-- I am actually in a study on exercise and nutrition for the next couple of years through my oncologist--- so this is timely. The goal of this study is to lose 20 lbs in the next 6 months.  I have been in weight watchers for most of my life to just maintain my weight..... but I did lose and gain 20lbs during treatment-- so I have some work to do..... I will check back in at the end of the week....

Well, howdy there - I'm in.  Something has got to work sooner or later so it may as well be this!  (plus my twin, JO, is here).  I could stand to lose 50 but will be quite happy with 30.

    Let the fun begin!

Well I have deliberately cut back on my cals like I promised but have not increased my activity.  Unable to leave the house and start my walk.  This morning I am 5lbs plus..... Makes me more depressed.   I will try harder since I HATE how I look.

I have decided to try to lose 1 to 2 pounds a month---in a year that would be at least 12 pounds.  In August I started a diet that was suggested not for weight loss but for health by an integrative doctor.  It is basically a vegan diet with fish permitted and everything whole grain.  I was told no meat (since I hadn't eaten meat for 20 years that is not a problem), no dairy, few eggs.  I thought I would die without dairy but it actually has not been that hard... I still have a little milk in my coffee and do not have a fit if I am in a restaurant and taste butter on the fish.  But I have cut it out of most of the food that I eat at home.   In the first two months I lost 71/2 pounds but I noticed that the weight is not pouring off any more...it is slower. So I decided it was more realistic to figure I'd lose 1 to 2 pounds a month. I weigh myself to be sure that I am not gaining weight and I don't obsess. I had gained a chemo pot (30 pounds of weight in my belly that I put on during chemo) and I would like to lose it for health and appearance sakes.  I am hoping to be able to up my exercise a bit but after chemo I had lost alot of energy so I have begun by walking when I can....I run my errands by walking rather than by driving (I live in the downtown area of a city).  So yesterday I walked 3 1/2 slow miles but at least I walked.....today, it was about 2 1/2 miles.

Ok - although I try to stay on track, I always seem to be hungry and reach for inappropriate things!  So, I have decided to make sure that I drink lots of water.... right now I feel bloated, but I just drank down a bottle of water.  Maybe when I know that I shouldn't be snacking or just want to have "a taste", I can just down a bottle of water and I might be able to cut out the extra food!  Just a thought?!?!?!?  Once I get that on track, I will have to make some time everyday for exercise as it is sooooo easy to find excuses on that one too!! LOL

YEP, sign me up! I've put on weight with chemo and will be starting Tamox at the beginning of November when I finish rads. People on the Tamox thread all complain about weight gain so maybe I can nip this in the bud. Still having muscle weakness and neuropathy combined with foot pain from chemo, but started back to yoga two weeks ago and look forward to walking soon. In the past when I have needed to lose weight, the one pound a week process has worked well for me with the mantra, "NO WHITE FOOD!" and at least 30 minutes of raised heart rate daily. It's time to get honest with ourselves girls. After all this work to survive, this should be easy, eh?

Hi - can I join this thread????  I would love to lose 30 pounds, but will be happy if it is just 15 or twenty.

I am just finishing rads - and pretty burned so don't think I can walk too fast, but will start power walking soon.  I think I will follow the Bob Greene "Best Life" book - my friend lost 40 pounds over quite a few months on that plan.

Looking forward to losing weight with you and improving all of our health!

Hi - sign me up too!

I gained about 15 pounds with tamoxifen.  I just had a stacked diep on left breast a couple of weeks ago and want to be at my ideal weight before stage 2 of my surgery in December so that my docter can do the best job possible with symmetry between the two breasts.

I have tried to cut down a lot but find that I nearly have to starve myself in order to lose any weight.  I think this is because of the tamoxifen.  Is anyone else having this problem????

My plan is to eat low carb, lots of egg white omeletes, and to actually count calories.  Also need to start walking again.  Height 5'3' current weight 140.

Count me in!  I started eating more carefully and exercising too.  I finally dropped the first stubborn pound!

Note: if you are on tamoxifen, one side effect is blood clots in the legs, from being too sedentary, so that was my final kick in the butt!

I will join you too!  I did start exercising again this week and eating more carefully, at least most of the time.  Dropped one pound.

Just a note to tamoxifen users:  my onc told me that one side effect could be blood clots in the legs if the patient is too sedentary.  THAT was the kick in the butt that really got me motivated!

Have you ever had one of those days when all you think about is food and nothing seems to satisfy you?  I have had one of those days today.  I tried to make all my choices healthy i.e. celery, broth, but did break down with a piece of chocolate.  What do you do when this happens to you?

Welcome, Stef!  Yep, Wii fit is really fun, but it might get boring after awhile if you like salsa dancing or something like that.  I like it because my kids and I can all do it.

Patty--YES...I have those days.  I'm not very good at overcoming them, but maybe someone else around here has some ideas.  I think a piece of chocolate seems okay :)  A whole cake...maybe not, LOL!

Count me in too. I actually started in January 2009. When I came home from work, I'd put my jeans on and they were so uncomfortable. I'd make supper, do dishes and try to sit down and relax in the living room, but they were just too tight. I'd go and put my nightie on and it was only 6:30 pm. So from then until beginning of summer I did lose 10 lbs. And here it is almost 9 pm and I'm wearing my jeans. That 10 lbs that I got rid of really helped. It is much harder losing in the winter. I would like to lose another 10 and I'll be happy. So lets post how much we lose and what we eat so it will give others ideas. This is a good idea.

I would love to join all of you.  About three years ago I lost about 50 pounds.  Since then, I took on a job with more responsibility and wasn't able to maintain the weight loss due to an increase in my workload.  As a result, I gained back about 40.  Just when I decided to cut back on work, I was diagnosed with DCIS.  I think it was God's way of telling me where the extra time I would now have should go...to taking care of myself.  Ten days after surgery I walked 5 miles and have been walking at least that much every day since, slowly increasing my pace.  I do it first thing in the morning (putting "me" first) and find that it's a great way to prepare for the day ahead.  My husband often walks with me, but I think I'd also need the support of others to keep it up long-term.
