Wow, I just started today by trying to cut out alot of carbs(I love my carbs) .  I am finished with chemo and am nearly finished with rads.  I hope to start walking as soon as my underarm burns improve.  I really could stand to lose 50 pounds.  Oh, what a dream that would be.  We are all in this together.  We can do this.  God Bless

Too cold and wet here in CT to walk today and I didn't get up for the gym!  Not off to a good start foday.  I went straight from radiation to work.  Plus, I'm not feeling "strong" against food temptations today.  Ugggghhhh... this is hard getting back into the swing of this!

How soon into rads did the burns start?  I am feeling some pain in my radiated breast today, wondering if that's the start of it, after only 4 treatments?

    Hi all,

I would like to be part of this also. The fat has gotta go! I need to lose 30 lbs and I actually started on my own a couple days ago before I saw this thread. I'm doing an organic, low carb (no white sugar or flour or anything that contains them) kind of thing.  I made a pot of soup and reheat some whenever I need a quick bite. I've lost 3 lbs so far. I am a walker but I have not been since my oopherectomy 4 wks ago. I am very busy with 2 boys, hubby, the math class I started  the same week as my ooph, and appts for bc stuff. I'm going to use Wednesday as my weight/progress day.

Well, knee problems will stop any exercise for another few days but will try and watch my food intake.  Promised I would rest tomorrow but need to get some healthy stuff into the fridge.

One thing I have heard is that many times when we think we want a snack we really need to down some water.  Seems dehydration, however slight, can cause a snack attack.

Interesting that most of us want to lose about the same amount, 25-30 lbs.  (well, I really want to lose 50 but trying to keep it real)

    Hi All...

I'm joining you. I start tomorrow. I have not been able to take the chemo weight off, and it will be 2 years in February. I have about 50 lbs to loose. Its funny but by looking at me you wouldn't think I needed to loose 50,I guess I hold weight well, but it must come off.

Ive been having aches in my ankles and lower back which I feel is a se of the Tamoxifen but mostly the extra weight. I'm only 5 ft 3 so small framed and extra weight is a pain literally to carry around.

I hope to loose 30lbs by the new year.

My plan of attack low carb (not no carb) portion control and hiting the gym 4-5x a week.

I've lost weight before...I can do it again.Enough is enough....

    Start date : Oct 17 2009.

    I'll be checking in

Hello Ladies & Greeting from a very cold Michigan!

Today was my 2 year anniversary of my bi-lat mast surgery. Since then I too have 20 extra pounds on my 5'8 frame. This was a real reality check today since I had to step on the scale at the doctors office today. I swear those scales lie!!!!! So count me in. Last year at this time I had to have a total hyst. and ever since then, my food intake is worse than my horses......I graze all day long! So my plan is this......no more eating desert first. That has always been my motto...I mean when I go out to eat, my theory was to always order desert first, because I know I'm gonna love the wonderful, chocolate wonders, but may not love the dinner. So dinner is easier for a take out!!! Calories are calories, right??? Just kidding, I know their not, maybe that's why I found out my chol. numbers were high today from my blood test earilier in the week. So I'm in ladies....my goal is I'm going to Key West at Christmas and I refuse to buy larger shorts, since I have a whole closet full of clothes at my mother-in-law's in Key West. My exercise plan will be walking the overweight dog, and using the treatmill and ab machine in the basement. (Where will I hang my laundry!!!!)

Good Luck to all......most of all Charlie (the overweight Lab who will suffer with me)

    Hi all..again..

I was thinking of ways that we could motivate eachother while we are trying to loose weight together. Any suggestions?

Maybe we can post monthly our weight loss numbers, also recipe ideas is great especially with Xmas around the corner. I know that most of you have your Thanks giving next month...thats always hard. I'm in Canada, we had ours 6 days ago so its come and gone..lol.

I have NOT stepped on my scale..lol. I have a good idea what it is, but I will also be measuring how my clothes fi. I havd 2 pairs of jeans that I paid good money for and they have been in my closet for over 4 years! I will get them back over my butt.

One more thing here....drink lots of water. It helps to loose the weight. 8-10 glasses a day, it flushes you out and it makes you fuller. This is an important weight loss tool. If I get bored of water, I use Crystal Lite flavoring , or I make cold green tea with lemon and keep it in a juice jug in the fridge. What ever works, as long as you get it it. Carry a water bottle with you when out, so your not tempted to buy high sugary drinks.

You'd be amazed at the calories in juices ect. Just say NO!

I would like to join this thread.  I have finished treatment (except for aromasin) but am still in the reconstruction stage.  I had exchange surgery in July and have a couple of minor surgeries planned by the end of the year (fat grafting, dog ear clean-up, etc).  I have about 50 pounds to lose and I find the hardest part is just getting started.  I have lost weight in the past with Weight Watchers so I know how and what to do, it's the starting that I have a problem with.  Since my diagnosis I feel like I'm always "getting over" something (surgeries, have had 5 in 10 months, problems with se's from aromasin, etc) and the excercise thing has been a distant memory.  I am feeling good now and hope to start walking soon.  I appreciate any help and encouragement offered.  Together, we can do it!!

Isn't it funny how we all KNOW how to loose weight but we have the weight to loose?..lol/

    Kathy,

I have done various diets, Weight Watchers. LA Weight Loss ( the worst) and last year I did Dr. Bernstein.

I have the tools all in my head, I know what to do!! Yet, the starting is the hardest. SO I will start out small for the first week...walking more than usual and light weights.

I have put a picture of myself 6 yrs ago..pre cancer and pre baby, on the fridge. I hope this helps with motivation

    Lexislove,

I will try to start on Monday.  Knowing what to do and actually doing it are two different things.  I will really, really try though.  Hopefully having all my kids out of the house will be a big help.  I did it before and know it is such a mental thing.  But oh yea, I didn't have bc then that takes up so much of my mental capacity these days.  Will try to get the mindset going.  Thanks for all and any encouragement.

Welcome KK69Z, Sunris, Merciful,Mrsrockytop, anniebford, kbram, lexislove, sharon67, and everyone else!

Awesome, guys, on all the positive changes and suggestions!  I echo the dehydrated thing patoo mentioned!

Lexislove..you have some great ideas...I was going to ask if anyone has some good homemade stick to your ribs soup recipes cuz I need lunch options (no sulfates or nitrates for me!).  I've decided to post my weekly weight loss (which you laugh at below ;)).  In a month, maybe we can do a roll call post and see how we've all progressed total if people want.

Merciful...I feel the same as you about the weight and BC.  I dont blame myself for getting cancer, but I do feel like God was getting my attention about taking care of myself and body.  As I mentioned, I have 70 lbs to lose (WoW!) and I used to be the type to exercise advanced aerobics every day, etc.  But having the 4 kids and focusing on them made me lazy in keeping myself up and in what and how much I eat.

That being said...I weighed myself this morning...guess how much I lost...NOTHING! :)  I contribute that to trying...but not hard enough.  I made changes this week, but I still overate at times.  For me, I WILL lose this weight, but I know I have struggles to overcome, so I will just get right back up and get started.

JO-5's right (Hi JO!) about rads and I chime in on any treatments.  I know we all want to challenge ourselves, but we also have to be smart and not beat ourselves up if we need to rest or recover, right?  PS--Reading about your din-din is making me salivate, LOL!

That being said, we all can do this (echoing Mrsrocky!)!  If we're not perfect...so what!  We can start over right away (not Monday) to try to eat healthy and exercise (pending being physically okay for that day).  We have already done what many people have not...OVERCOME cancer (for now anyway!), so we can also overcome our bad habits.  It may be really slow, but we're here to support each other.  Any change is good.  I exercised two times last week.  This week I'm going for at least 3 times, and less carbs like another poster said!  If I lose a pound...I will be thrilled!  But I know either way, I will have done better than last week.  That's one of my goals.

Ra ra, shish coom ba (I'm routing for us all!)....no cake for me today (at least till later, it's only 10 am after all) ha ha!!!

Hi, count me in!! I have about 50 to lose. This past January I started losing, I had gotten to 20 lbs. The I quit smoking in April. I gained back the 20 plus 10 more!! I feel awful caring around this weight. Ihave been having hip problems and I am sure if I lost some weight, it would help.

I will start on Mon, the 19th.

Cake, thatnks for starting this thread.

hugs and prayers and good luck to all

Candle, congrats on stopping smoking.  That's a BIG accomplishment.  If you did that you can accomplish this next goal.

Yes, we KNOW and have the tools.  Our challenge is to put them all into use.  I will start TODAY with the water.  I have a habit of drinking it for a couple of days and then stopping.  So I will make that my first commitment.  Baby steps.  I will create a list of what I need to do and check them off as I put them into my daily routine.

See, thanks - this is going to work.

ok ladies here are some really good tips regarding fruits:

When we diet we tend to load up on the fruits and veggies. Good for most veggies but bad for fruit. Fruit is good for us but it contains a lot of sugar, to loose weight we have to eliminate the :white stuff".

This is what I got from Dr. Bernstein, remember you can loose 20 lbs in 1 month with this program, I lost 23. Here is a list of the fruit and veggies that should be only consumed (low sugar):

    -Apples, oranges,strawberries,cantaluope, asian pears

    ALL others...avoid

    Veggies to avoid (high sugar):

    -Corn,potatoes,sweet potatoes,peas,carrots

    All other veggies are ok.

Eliminate all cooking oils, butters. Only use cooking spray, like PAM. Bake, broil, boil your food.

A good sweet tooth craving is the JELLO cups. Strawberry jello, or the chocolate pudding. NO SUGAR... only 5 calories per cup.read the back of the package to make sure you get the right one. My cupboards are stocked with them, and when you crave chocolate, the pudding is nice!

    JO,

I love bacon too. I'm a salt craver more than sweets.  I've had the turkey bacon before an its pretty good. Here's a breakfast sammy I like to make:

    1 English muffin

1 Slice Kraft Fat Free Cheddar cheese

    2 Egg Whites

    2 slices Turkey Bacon

    2 slices tomatoe (optional)

Its my version of a Egg Mc Muffin. Spray frying pan with PAM, fry egg whites & turkey bacon. Toast the english muffin. When egg is half done add cheese slice to melt. Put on english muffin, salt and pepper.

    This around 270 calories.

I also do a tuna melt as well.

I just can't get my mind around just the egg whites.  Had an egg white cheese omelet once and could not eat it.  Maybe it just wasn't done right.  Or maybe it's just because I love eggs - boiled, fried, scrambled - just love them.  I don't have them often however, probably not even once a week so I think that's one thing I'm not going to be able to give up.  And that's okay.  We need to identify what we are willing to sacrifice.  Failure will loom if we are not honest.

Good news though - I got on the scale a little while ago and I'm down 2 lbs. from 2 weeks ago.  Don't know why but I'll take it!

Also started the water.  I think somewhere I had read that 6 x 8oz glasses a day is sufficient.  I'm working on my third.  Also, it's better to drink them quickly as it works better to flush the body.  Sipping only allows the water to be absorbed and not flush as much.

Blueberries are so good as we all know. I love em! I bake with them and throw them in smoothies...just high in sugar. I'm not planning on eliminating my blueberries completely......just cutting back more.

    Hello Ladies,

Well it's my day one. So far I think I'm doing okay, but then it's only 4:00. It's the evening's that are bad for me. As far as a diet, I've always had good luck with Atkins. Before my Hyst. surgery last year, I managed to drop 12 lbs. in about 3 weeks. Besides, I love meat. But since it was sweetest day in Michigan, my DH took me out for breakfast and I did have one pancake with blueberries and a small amount of whipped cream. For an early dinner, I just had a piece of steak. I had every intention to walk Charlie today, but it started to cloud up and cool off. And to tell you the real truth, I just real comfortable in my lazy boy chair. I did work outside with the horses for a while. I think I'll just allow myself one more day of laziness and tomorrow it's "walk the dog!!!"

    Take care

    Sharon

I would like to join the group. I have to lose 82 pounds. The doctor said that the weight feeds the cancer. Thursday I did 15minutes of intense lower body work out. Today, I would like to do another dvd. It's tough when you are so tired from the chemo.

I'm in.  I would like to loose 15 lbs so my clothes will fit again.   Nothing else I am doing is working, maybe a support group will help.  I work out 5 days a week and am still gaining weight.  I have trouble resisting the cookies they often have at meetings at work.  Not because I really love cookies, I don't.  I just hate the work more - eating a cookie is almost always more enjoyable than work.

Also, I eat too much fruit and sweet potatoes.  These foods are tricky because its easy to tell yourself they are healthy - meanwhile we're just getting a sugar fix.  Lexi - thanks for posting the list of fruits and veggies that should be avoided.

JO, I know what you mean.  I just posted what the scale said "today" knowing that it can turn on me tomorrow.  Oh well.

Give up bananas????   Nooooooooooo, please don't say that.  I think they are what keeps my leg cramps at bay.  C'mon, give me a break.

Okay, see ya in an hour or so.

Orange I think if you cut back those sugary fruits and sweet potatoes you will notice a difference. I love sweet potatoes especially baked, but if I want to loose the extra weight I gotta eliminate some stuff right now, later on I'll introduce it back into my life.

When I was working, I was at a large dental practise and every Friday somebody would bring something. NOONE brought anything healthy!!! I was there for 2 years and gained 10lbs. Boxes of donaughts, samosas, chips and dips blah blah...it was mortifying.

Then XMAS....all the patients would get chocolates for the docs ect and there would be boxes and baskets everywhere. It was a nightmare.

    BTW..

I just made some homemade hummus. More healthy than store bought! I'm crisping my whole wheat pita chips now.

    1 can chick peas drained

    1/2 cup olive oil

    1 garlic clove roasted

    juice of 1 lemon

    salt,pepper,paprika to taste

    * I don't add Tahini paste wich is traditionally used, because it is high in fat. This recipe you don't even miss it. The roasted garlic is a good substitute.

Add all ingriedents in food processor, pulse till smooth. Garnish with parsley!

I keep it in the fridge, it can last a good week. Good with pita chips, clery, cauliflower or on a sandwich instead of mayo.
