thanks. Hard to accept theloss of a life at such a young age.
badger- congrats on the job change. Good for you!
Ruth-that temp sounds terrible to me. I am already sick of the cold. We are expecting 5-8 inches of snow tomorrow.
I did a POUND class last night followed by a water fitness class and I can really feel it today in my arms and glutes. If I can still move in the morning, I am going to take a Zumba class.
Then if the snow isn't too bad, off to look at wedding dresses with my goddaughter and to a wedding expo.
-
Did an hour with the FIRM DVDs & took a little dog for a m,, walk. She wanted to go outside SO bad, but is was so cold that she'd hop on three legs for awhile to warm up one paw & then switch and give another paw a break.
-
Might do a workout later on. Today's snow looks like hubby may need to do snow removal tomorrow when it's all over
-
Ginger: So sorry about the young man. Such a tragedy.
Ruth: I can't even imagine -15°. We are going to have a low of 4° tonight. Not looking forward to it.
My ears are finally better. The doctor said that they were in really bad shape. They were so painful! I haven't exercised and I'm slowly getting back into it. We had snow last night and this morning – close to 8 inches. So today I got to shovel and sculpt!
-
We are in the 20's today and tomorrow which is pretty cold for us. We definitely get that during the winter, but we usually hang out in the 30's. Upper 40's feel really warm in the winter. Got a little snow for the first time, only a couple of inches. Last couple of years here, it seems like if we get snow, we get over a foot, so a couple of inches is not bad. And because it is pretty cold, it is really fluffy, light snow. When it snows at right around 32 degrees, it's a real heavy, wet snow. That is what we usually get, so I don't mind this snow at all. Very easy to shovel, hardly got any exercise shoveling our pretty long driveway. Or at least it seems long when I am shoveling snow.
Did a spinning class for the first time ever today. It was hard! Much harder than I push myself when I do the stationary bike on my own. But I made it through even if I may have lowered the resistance to get through it, so I am calling it a success. Did a restorative yoga class yesterday. I am so inflexible, I was nervous about it, but it was actually easy. The instructor did say though, that it might make you sleep better, and I did notice that I really dreamt that night and slept really heavily, so that was also a success. Really enjoying this new gym.
Stay warm everyone, and enjoy the rest of the weekend.
-
congrats,Kay on doing a spin class. I had the same experience my first time. Adjusted the tension as needed and made it through.
Wonderland-glad you are feeling better.
Bridal shopping was moved tomorrow due to snow.
I did Zumba this morning. Then we drove through terrible road conditions to the wake. Such a sad day.
-
Got out to the ski trails today and did about 10 miles. Cold means taking the chairlift when windy with temps ~12F. I was glad to start skiing and really grateful for the uphill climbs to warm my core. That said, the snow was just perfect, so the skiing was fabulous.
All nice and toasty once again post hot bath.
Supposed to be really nasty in the morning so we shall see what works on the exercise front. BTW - feel nice and sculpted from the 3+ hours of skiing.
Need to get dinner in the oven as planning on cooking the lamb shanks that I have had in the freezer for a while. Should be tasty with some roasted vegetables and potatoes. - Claire
-
((Ginger)) a sad day indeed.
Wonderland, glad your ears are better. Apparently the pH of my ears isn't acidic enough to ward off germs so I'm prone to ear infections and know how painful they can be. Haven't had one for a long time (touch wood) since I got an Rx for Acetasol. I use it PRN when I get itchy ears, a sign to use a few drops.
Been busy all day, sent first e-mail at 6:45 am and last one at 8:45 pm. [edit to add: it's incredible how projects that people have procrastinated for two years now need to be completed in the next two weeks.] I have to admit to a sliver of satisfaction watching folks parceling out my ginormous workload.
Did get chores done incl laundry and a trip to the library but didn't walk as cold here too. Not ND cold, but minus six is cold enough. Just pulled a tray of choc chip cookies from the oven and house smells great. Going to plunk on the couch with a glass of milk and the puzzle page from today's newspaper. Phew!
-
Day off for me and it's a clear start to our chilly, damp January morning. Found this article in NYT interesting: http://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/03/well/move/is-your-workout-not-working-maybe-youre-a-non-responder.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fhealth&action=click&contentCollection=health®ion=rank&module=package&version=highlights&contentPlacement=7&pgtype=sectionfront

Going out as soon as I am done to finish the cleanup from the snow that hubby started
-
FIRM Hard Core Fusion (a mix of aerobics and weights), I am now signing off & can not come here again until I have cleaned this house!!!!
-
Worked this morning updating procedure manual, then logged off work e-mail and went grocery shopping. Stuffed a chicken with onion & rosemary and into the roaster it went an hour ago. House smells great and as a bonus will later have the makings for chicken soup. Ruth I also HAD to do some housework and am feeling better after a round of Scrub & Sculpt. Also roasting is one of the last of our home-grown acorn squash, and I have risotto simmering stovetop. Will toss in for color the half-cup of baby peas mom sent home from supper Friday. Waste not want not, or as my DH the chef likes to say, you pay for it all so use it all. Now watching the Packers game. Still have the Dec books to finish but just not feeling motivated ..... ya know? :-)
-
Also did some housecleaning today. Moved all the furniture out of my son's bedroom to vacuum and clean the carpet in prep for handing down our mattress and boxsprings to him. Then cleaned two bathrooms and laundry. My argus app includes "housekeeping" as exercise so I count it! Now I'm getting on my mini tramp while I watch the Golden Globes.
Lilac, that's an interesting article about non-responders. I have a couple of types of exercises that I feel I never improve much at and now I'm wondering if maybe I'm a non-responder to those, and I can just move on to other types.
-
TwoHobbies, glad that you can relate to the article and change types rather than give up, which is the easier, softer way and as you know, housework, like gardening does count as exercise. Drippy, foggy cold morning start here in the Kent outback. Pink Ribbion Pilates starts back today so off to get a lesson plan sorted. Been on #75 BB/Flow for over a week now, 5 classes total and everyone is embracing this much quicker than #74 . I'm also on a course for level 3 diploma course in mat pilates (ending in March) and enjoying it. Have a good start to the week everyone!
-
Glad the ears are better, Wonderland. Great fix, badger, for yours.
Claire, nice to hear you're making most of the ski season. DH was off for some backcountry skiing yesterday but there was still not enough snow.
Ginger, a wedding expo sounds like so much fun. Will be a good antidote for the sadness.
Lilac, have been thinking about that article...Not sure three weeks is enough time for some people to show response. But certainly worth mixing things up and trying again later.
Not ND cold here either, but enough to keep me off my bike and spending more time at the gym. Cheryl, they are still charging for GRIT, but I can take one free class to try it out, so maybe I'll do so this afternoon.
-
I think the fact that you may not 'respond' to a certain type of exercise is another good reason to keep mixing things up. I am going to sign off and do another exercise DVD......blah, blah, blah......I may be forced to check out some different gyms as this is less than thrilling to me.
-
Welcome home Karen. Glad you are feeling better Wonderland. Ahhh Badger watching those who've just taken you for granted scurrying around must give you enormous satisfaction, they do realize your worth, just a little too late. I did some house cleaning this weekend too - took down all the decorations so had to dust and sweep and put everything back in order. LB that is an interesting article about non responders. Heidi on Saturday I went to Grit strength and was sooo busy talking - I know shocker eh - that I loaded the bar on one side with a 5 & 2-1/lb weight and the other with just a 5# weight so the class starts and I'm um this doesn't feel right but can't put my finger on it but I rowed and clean and pressed then I rolled the bar off to the side to do push ups and noticed - no wonder it felt lop sided
. Kay I remember the first time I ever sat on a bike for a class I was terrified, and even after all this time I sometimes have to loosen that tension. Yesterday I drove to Los Angeles to do a friends RPM filming - its a 45 minute choreographed Les Mills class on a bike, the traffic was so bad it took me 2-1/2 hours to get there when it should have taken me an hour, luckily I had left early as I had wanted to stop at a store up there, which of course didn't happen. No snow here just rain which we need, hopefully soon they can declare our drought over.
-
- 45 minutes of Cardio Dace Party tonight, had to leave as I started having coughing fits and my throats is rar again, ughhhhh
-
Did 12 miles on the stationary bike tonight. I may be imagining it, but i felt like i was able to do better with it rhan i had been from that one cycle class. Pretty cool if that is the case. I have to get back to jogging thiugh, it's been several weeks
-
Kay you're building endurance.
Tonight did Sprint (30 minute HITT on a bike) Body Flow at one gym then LM abody Barre at another, I'm actually really enjoying Barre I feel it is helping with my balance. -
Some shovel and sculpt over the weekend and yesterday morning. Yesterday evening did 45 minute body sculpt class and 25 minute walk at steepest incline on the treadmill.
-
Grit Strength this morning but this cold has me tight in its grips, can't breath and rotten headache so I left work early and I'm on the couch
-
Better lie low, Cheryl. (Blah, not the advice we want to hear!)
Last spring, my town voted to RAISE taxes to build a new community fitness center (shocking, I know!). One of our walking women is friends with the person in charge & arranged us to get a tour of the building site. It is slated to open in September & is going to be really, really nice. Exciting! Here we are on the walking track.
-
For the first time in a long time, I couldn't make myself walk after dinner. I put it off too long and by 8:00 I didn't want to walk by myself. DH went to San Fran for the day on business so he won't be home till late, late. I was at the admin building all day today which is downtown. I don't like to pay to park, so I have found a small block where there is no time limit for parking (most are only 2 hours) and free...its about 15 minute walk which I love but after work today, the temp had dropped about 15 degrees from the morning and I was not dressed warm enough. I may have to walk around the house for a bit to get all my daily steps in...I'm only at 13K!! Quite a decrease from my trip....Yeah, I know work gets in the way!!
Going to make my pizza dough for dinner tomorrow night and maybe make some cookie dough to make tomorrow night...
Stay warm!
-
Terrific photo of WWW Ruth! Cheryl, glad you like LM Barre and 2 days to BP 100! Been working on course work, house tidying and catching up on emails. Grey, cold, drizzly day here and need to get out and do a few errands.
Body balance tonight and classes have been January packed-out!

It has been a long time since I have posted. But I have missed you ladies! The last 2 years or so were very difficult for me emotionally - family issues mostly, took a long time for me to get a grip on my feelings and look at the glass as half full again. But I really have so much to be grateful for, and in the grand scheme of things I shouldn't have been so down in the dumps. I retired last summer, and hubby and I have been doing a lot of traveling - a road trip from New Orleans to DC via Memphis and Nashville, several music festivals where we camped in our trailer, and Oktoberfest in Munich. Healthwise I celebrated 5 years, and was overjoyed to find that my original breast surgeon had recently returned from California to the area. It was like a breath of fresh air to see her again, I had never really clicked with her replacement.
Unfortunately in the last two years 2 of my friends and my niece were diagnosed with breast cancer. I hate that they had to join this club. My friends are doing well, but my niece is in the midst of a fight - she went from a good mammo a year ago to 3 separate tumors in one breast.
As far as exercise goes, I had been going to a gym pretty regularly up until the time I retired. But for the past 6 months all I really have done is walk. I am reading a book called Younger Next Year for Women - they recommend exercising hard 6 days a week for the rest of your life, and make some compelling arguments why you should do so. But so far all I'm doing is reading the book LOL! I've been keeping track of my active minutes with my Fitbit, trying to get 200 minutes a week of active time, usually from just walking around the block a couple of times on good weather days. I've started to suffer from a bit of arthritis/bursitis in my hips and legs, so this morning I got up and did Classical Stretch, and hope to continue that trend most mornings. When I was faithful to that show it really helped me with flexibility and core strength. Last night I got an email from fitbit talking about fitstar, which is an online exercise program that coordinates with your fitbit. I hope to check that out in the next couple of days.
Hopefully I will become a regular poster again, back in the day this thread really kept me responsible with my exercise, and so many of you women were inspiring to me.
Pat

Good to see you, Pat! Congratulations on your retirement & being able to travel. It sounds like you have done some fun and interesting trips. I find it so difficult emotionally when another friend/acquaintance/family member is diagnosed with cancer. It hits too close to home, I suppose, But we can be a great resource for them; to give tips on how to get through treatment, as someone who can listen & who really DOES know what they are going through, and maybe as examples of living well and happily even after all a cancer diagnosis entails. (End of speech.....), Yes, add some stretching/yoga/light weights etc. to the walking. It will help with the arthritis.
We were up at 4 am to give an old lady friend a ride to the bus depot (she is a widow & her family is taking her on a cruise, but she has to get to Minneapolis first), so I feel rather shot. I think I will do a little yoga when I sign off here & then do something cardio-ish when I get home from school. My friend that I'm subbing for had a checkup yesterday, so hopefully he will get the all clear to come back full time & I can go back to being retired .
-
Cheryl: take care and hope you start feeling better soon.
Ruth: your new fitness center is going to going to be wonderful when it's completed. What a great picture of your group.
Pat: glad that you have come back and are doing better now.
Walked this afternoon in 70° weather.
-
Welcome back, Pat!
My friend got for me a yoga pass and they had an unlimited two weeks to start so tonight was my first yoga class. I am going to try to go a lot for two weeks and then maybe once a week and resume the P90 in between.
-
Speaking of yoga, this is me at least part of the time
