What Cowgirl13 said. I think a lot of us aren't necessarily here to find information, but to stay in touch with people who helped us when we were new and with whom we've developed relationships. Just in the last few days, I came across a thread from several months ago that got reactivated when someone made a new comment. In the original responses were three consecutive posts from ShetlandPony, BevJen, and Moth. After the initial sadness of reliving the loss of these three women, I savored the chance to once again read their words of wisdom and support to a new member and remember why we treasured their existence. I've occasionally read much older posts and felt like I got to know people who are no longer here. One of my favorite quotes from the late, great, Sir Terry Pratchett is "Do you not know that a [person] is not dead while [their] name is still spoken?" I think it applies to reading their words, too.

I came for the information. I stayed for the people. I agree with cowgirl and Alice. It is about the relationships and conversations. And once the relationships developed the context of the information was more meaningful. I reread posts from people I met my first few days here because they meant so much to me. KBeee was one who taught me a lot that I no longer remember but I sure remember her heart. I know she taught me things but I remember HER.

Just to be clear, I am not suggesting that older posts be abandoned. Absolutely not. I agree with y'all that they have value and should be maintained.

My suggestion was that they don't necessarily need to be migrated into the full-function forum. They could be saved in an archive database that uses less space and resources. They would still be tied to the forum search engine, and accessible through that avenue. For example, if someone searched for "brownie recipe", they might get a results list like:

    • "Pauline's best brownies"
    • "What's your fave brownie recipe?"
    • "Grampa's choco-coffee brownies" [archived]
    • "I love my MIL, but hate her brownies" [archived]

"Grampa's choco-coffee brownies" is still accessible, but the view won't be as flashy as the active forum boards.

If archiving helps save time and reformatting resources for the transition to a functional platform, then great. If it's just as much work to archive old posts as it would be to migrate them, then it's not worth the extra effort.

Data migration can be done without data loss by people with expertise. I've had to clean up after people who didn't know what they were doing.

Archiving posts would take more work than simply having enough resources to run the site. The site was fine until they made changes. Links would break as they already have. It's funny that you use the search feature in your example. The BCO search feature is primitive and barely useful. Your search results would also return posts with recipes unrelated to brownies. What happens when you click on a post? Would you see only the post or would the whole thread be reconstructed?

Good points. I was brainstorming if it would have helped. But if archival just creates more work on the back side, it's not going to be worth it. A functional and user-friendly interface is the primary need.

I agree with Cowgirl. I have many friends from 10 years ago. I still look back at advice members gave for how to get through BC. I still look back at recipes that were posted, and books that someone recommended - AND posts by all the sisters who have gone beyond. PLEASE don't delete the earlier threads.

MODS - I'm still having the same problem. If I open a thread w/3 pages to read & try to answer something on page 888 - then press preview - I can not go to page 889 to read the rest of the thread & respond. Look at my post on page 428 - which I can't go back to....

Yesterday I noticed that much of the text has been switched to a new typeface, I think it's Times Roman, and the font is much smaller and hard to read.

The font does seem smaller. I wish the font size for the post text including inside the preview and edit boxes would be enlarged. The header font sizes can be reduced.

What is preventing the powers-that-be from giving us a box to check so that we can remain logged in? Every. single. time. I visit the forum I must log in using the x number of convoluted steps. Tons of sites have a little box to check if you wish to remain logged in, it could be for a set period of time like two weeks, or simply stay logged in until you choose to log out. If I post a comment and go to another website, then think of something I want to add to the comment, I must jump through all the hoops to log in again, even if it’s been a short time away. Frustrating to say the least.

I log in every time, even if I just want to read, because if I come across a post that makes me want to respond, I'd have to go through the whole damn tedious log-in anyway, and then have to remember what I wanted to say, and where! If the site makes us log in each time, can't it be just one or two steps? Like "use my saved log-in information" CLICK.

Divine--I access the forum on a laptop and I always stay logged in, at least until I reboot the PC or log out when I leave the website.

Divine, like LW422, I too access on a laptop and stay logged in unless I actually log out or shut down my laptop. I think I stay logged in if I just go to another site for awhile.

It should be the same for all of us no matter what type of device.

And to add to the mix, I access this site on my iPad. Sometimes I stay logged in, sometimes I don’t without any discernible reason !

I use a desk top with FIrefox and I stay logged in until I sign out. Must have something to do with the equipment we're using???

I almost exclusively use an iPad air, purchased a year ago. I have to log in every time I visit the forum. I don’t have that problem on other forums non-bc related that I belong to. Nor did I have the issue with the previous bc forum here………
