THE WAY WE WERE......LOOKING BACK IS FUN

We lived in a three story house so the Slinky was a favorite of ours. I also had an Easy Bake Oven and loved making the little cakes for my Dad. He would pay me a quarter for them when he got home from work but I had to save the money to buy more of the cake mixes.
Oh, and also Jacks and jump ropes! I spent many a recess with my friends doing both. When I first heard of the JFK assination, I was in 2nd grade, at recess playing Jacks with my friends. My teacher was crying with other teachers.

OK I'll bite. Here is me & my brother circa 1954, doing what would now get us expelled: playing cowboys.
I'm the cute one.
-
cute pics of romper room and cowboys. Aaaaahhhh when times were innocent and being offended was your problem to deal with vs the entire government
-
Ugh Slow, you're poor shoulder! Those childhood injuries sure messed us up. My knee has never been the same either.
You guys with your fancy schmancy silver X-mas trees! I honestly thought those were a '70's thing.
Crog, that is waaayy cool. Being on Romper Room must have been a blast!
Ah, the diapers. In the land of Pampers and Luvs, I did it old school. Really old school. Remember boiling them with some lemon juice and hanging them in the sun so they'd be shock white (on advice from my mom). On the plus side, my kids were toilet-trained by a year and a half, without any real work on my part. These days it seems some kids are barely trained by kindergarten. Something about the discomfort of those horrible rubber pants made them want "out" of them asap, I think.
Anybody remember putting a rubber ball in a pantyhose leg and wacking it against the school wall in cadence in between your legs and stuff? Wish I could remember the rhymes and songs that went with that game. These were the balls we used.
-
leggo. I have to be honest and say I really don't remember much about it..😒. Wish I did!!!!
-
This might be strictly a Canadian thing, but it's one of may favourite memories. Jam Can curling. Every winter the neighbour kid's dad made a curling rink on his driveway. For years parents collected their jam cans to fill with cement. Every kid in the neighbourhood showed up, even in 40 below. Cant remember the last time I saw jam sold in cans.
It was one of our intra-mural sports at school too! -
Yeah, those wax lips were something else, until you chewed them for about 30 seconds and ended up with this huge chunk of tasteless wax in your mouth...
LOVE the B/W photos! Crog - too cool! Ladies, we have a celebrity in our midst!
How about these? Nothing made your neck stickier, especially when you tried to bite the candies off the elastic....
And every Sunday night, my mom would set my hair in pincurls, while we watched Art Linkletter...
-
Hated them damn necklaces.......sticky is right.......
Art Linkletter was the best.............thanks for reminding us.............
-
I heard Franklin Roosevelt say.........This day will go down in infamy on this radio............
-
This thread is so enjoyable..........jogging my memory. It's fun. -
I am always behind but this is how we dried the 'nappies' diapers to you.
My friend in Vancouver said it was one of her memories of my clothes line with all the white squares fluttering in the breeze.
I agree that out babies were toilet trained earlier because it must have felt dreadful the great bulky things.
-
Alyson, I meant to ask (forgot), that jumper you posted a pic of......did I understand correctly? You did gym in that thing? How?????
-
Hi Leggo,
Confusing I know, our gym slip was actually our uniform tunic which we wore over a blouse. We did gym in rompers and a blouse and at secondary school we had short culottes. Girls used slightly shorter tunics to play Netball a type of out door basketball and for grass hockey. Our uniforms had to touch the ground when we were kneeling so we would loosening our belt under our blazers then hitch it up later.
Just remembered that we had regulation knickers as well and the teachers would check to see if we were wearing them !!!!!
And we wore these to keep our black stockings up.
At my secondary school we wore grey wool stockings. In summer we wore short white socks and and a light pinafore over a short sleeved blouse.
-
OMG......I remember wearing this damn thing it was horrible.......if you wore a tight skirt the hooks showed through
-
LOL what about the original Playtex girdle..........it was frigging rubber.........and the slogan was "No respectable girls leaves home without it"....
-
leggo. Canadian here and YES i remeber that ball and the pantyhose thing. I still remember how the paint had pretty much peeled off mine from overuse!
LOVED the candy necklaces. My fingers were multi -colored
-
Maple....welcome......glad your enjoying our trip back in time
-
WOW....you all have been busy today!
Crog, I love that Romper Room picture. I'm so jealous!!
magdalene51, that picture is adorable!!
Now for a really dumb question I'm sure......how did you clean those diapers? I mean, how did you get the messy stuff off of them?
I used disposable with my kids....my daughter trained at 18 months....my son was really difficult. He was three. He used to tell me he liked pooping in his pants because he liked the way it felt!?? What the heck can you say to that???
Leggo, I don't remember the rubber ball pantyhose thing. Was that a Canadian thing?
Ducky & Alyson, I'm confused about the upside down bra thingys?? What were they for? You said something about wearing that with a skirt???
-
Oh Slow, I can't wait to hear how they describe that! I did it one time and only once...went to Pampers right away...
-
Mema, they are garter belts. Stockings came up to mid-thigh & you hooked the tops of them to the garters to hold them up.
-
Oh it was messy.....you dumped the mess in the toilet........flushed, then dipped the diaper up and down in the clean toilet water to get the remainder off, wrung it out, and put it in a baggie, and they got washerd everyday...............and hung out on the clothesline...........it was not fun............but we had to do it.............Pampers did not come out till I had my 6th baby............first Pamper she peed right through............went back to the old way...........
-
OMG....that is so gross!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
OMG the garter belt was as bad as the thingy we had to use with the sanitary napkins
And my mom wore that girdle,me I was a skinny scrawny kid but I remember helpin my mom pull it up.
And she said to me when I had my kids U HAVE IT SO EASY COMPARED TO WHEN I WAS UR AGE
Oh really,,,look what they have today...
Alyson,,,ur outfits were really fugly...
-
Those upside down bras things are garter belts? Ok, I get it now. Did it actually hold up the stockings? It seems that it wouldn't hold it very well.
-
yes it is
And if u wore them with black nylon stockings with the black seam down the back they were actually very sexy!!!!!
Right Ducky!!!!!
-
Oh my. For some reason I can't visualize ducky with a black seam going up her black nylon stockings!! Did you do that ducky?
I'm still trying to get past washing the diapers in the toilet. I'm such a germaphobe I don't think I would have done too well with that.
-
OMG I was horrible at keeping the lines straight, so when seamless stockings came out, I was the first in line to buy them..............plus........the clips were 2 in he front, and1 on each side, so you didn't have to sit on them, sooooooooo.........the stocking followed the clip..........thus hard to keep it straight...........the seam under the foot was a "killer".......LOL
-
As a friend of mine used to say, it hurts to be pretty.
-
anyone ever play Marbles....
-
I lost mine
