I did not watch the Olympics this yr. I did though in many past years and recall much of what you all talked about. I do remember the Israeli's but had no idea that there was a ' dual' citizenship person among them. I do know that many of these wonderful human beings are as proficient academically as they are in their chosen Olympic sport.
-
pingpong, if I heard about the dual citizenship of the athlete from Cleveland at the time the tragedy occured, I didn't remember it. Wow. I am constantly reminded what a small world it is altho I certainly didn't grasp the concept when I was young.
And yet, in the midst of such tragedy, another memorable event at these Olympics was the gymnastic feats of the very charismatic Russian 17 year old, Olga Korbut. She became the first gymnast to perform a back flip to catch on the uneven bars, now known as the Korbut Flip. She was also the first to do a backward somersault on the balance beam and I remember seeing that on TV at the time. It was her performance at these Olympics that elevated Women's Gymnastics to one of the most popular sports in the world. She met with Pres. Nixon afterwards and of the meeting, she said: "He told me that my performance in Munich did more for reducing the political tension during the Cold War between our two countries than the embassies were able to do in five years." Nixon had him moments, I'll give him that. One of my sisters looked so much like young Olga.
Jackie & Ruth, you make a great point about the academic prowess of so many Olympic athletes, many go on to even greater things. Some do amazing things during the Olympics such as: Allyson Felix, most decorated U.S. Olympic track athlete (11 medals), male or female, ever. She partnered with her sponsor, Athleta — which Simone Biles left Nike to join — and the Women's Sports Foundation to create The Power of She Fund: Child Care Grants. The grant program has committed $200,000 to help fund child care costs for mothers who are also athletes while they are traveling to competitions. Grant recipients receive $10,000 each. Allyson Felix is mom to 2 year old Camryn.

MrsM, right on!!! Exactly what i have been thinking!

Re the Olympics: I am a bit younger but I do remember Olga Korbut (barely) and being mesmerized by her, and then Nadiya Comenici. In later years when "U.S.A! U.S.A! U.S.A!" chants became standard I have really missed that sense of just cheering on the best athletes in the world and being in awe of their acomplishments...

Spookiesmom - so embarrassing isn't it?
-
Spookie, I always love the screenshot news you share. DeSantis. How could he not have seen this coming? He’s destroyed chances of getting a presidential candidacy. Smh
-
DivineMrsM - he thinks it'll be successful. He's gone insane.

I spoke to my dearest friend who lives in FL yesterday. She moved there last year to help care for her elderly mother. Sadly, her mother passed away last week. She is aghast at Death Santis warped idea of good governance. She really doesn’t like FL but her husband doesn’t want to go back to NYC. With all the problems with Cuomo she figures she just has bad governor luck! She was an assistant attorney general for NY state and Eliot Spitzer was her boss. She can’t seem to escape scandal ridden men!

Okay, I would go to this guy's church:

Yes Spookie -- I feel for you and for a couple of other states too. I read this morning that Delta DeSantis is following the good ole' Trump playbook thinking that will lead him into a presidential nomination. I'm reduced to a grade schooler's taunt -- what a dumb-ass. Just look at where Trump is and if things keep going as bad for him, by 2024 anyone who STAYS with him is likely to be left holding a bag in nowheresville. Just saying I had to add that last word to my dictionary as it is not a word.
I'm hearing that Trump will be going to Alabama ( least vaccinated state ) on ? August 16th. There are about 15,000 people in the little town where he will be.. I think his places to go are not the huge arenas' of before which says to me he definitely is falling and failing. I can't imagine having a super spreader there and what havoc will be wrought. In defense, the week before there will be another big event. So many people it seems are living in la-la land and putting themselves and so many others at deep risk of death. I am speechless.

I love that one!

Great sign!
Perhaps they should post one at Fl's border reading: Now entering God's waiting room. Reservations for ICU beds are waitlisted. Proceed with caution or if you feel this is a threat to your liberty, please be our guest. Where do you want your remains shipped?
Sorry Spookiesmom but I think your governor is the grim reaper!
-
What really upsets me is parents who support no masking! They shout that their children can’t breathe (Let my child breathe!), that kids won’t keep them on, that it is harming them, etc. I taught first grade and none, repeat none, of my students had trouble with masking or breathing. My fellow teachers reported the same thing. Freedom, parental choice? Sorry but we’re talking public health here. Remember the greater good? How utterly selfish and foolish to insist that your “right” to do whatever you want supersedes a freaking pandemic !! It is beyond mind boggling.
-
My DIL is a teacher in Orange county here. Orange county had mandated masks last year, but this year they went into the gray area and said they require masks unless a parent writes a note to opt out. My DIL is ok with this, I think she is just tired of our crappy governor and his half baked Bs. From that lame "bonus" for teachers program, to the minimum $47,500 for new teachers, leaving experienced teachers who had to work their way up to that wage disgusted.
-
Home, my DD is a teacher in Pinellas. Her 1,000 check came Saturday. Not nearly enough, but did cover a new toilet and install 🤣🤣. She earned a master’s degree has been teaching 15 years, makes peanuts. She is in nursing school now, not going to take this FloriDuh crap much longer.
-
Spookiesmom - She has thought about her masters, but realized she wouldn't make much more. My son wants her to get a job like one of her friends where she would work from home and write curriculum for corporate training seminars. She loves the kids though, even though I don't think they will try to have children of their own.
She has been deemed "highly effective" every year she has taught (8 yrs) and never got the bonus because when she was in HS she only took the SAT and ACT once at 16 because her family couldn't afford for her to take it again. She did OK, but not well enough to get the bonus. She graduated from UCF summa cum laude and with honors from HS. Our governor likes to act like he cares, but then he throws all kinds of ridiculous barriers in the way. See Amendment 4 to allow felons who've done their time to vote. Now he is rrunning for presiddent instead of being our governor

It is not always easy to be a public school teacher. I think you have to go into it knowing that your skills will not be rewarded financially, at least for the first 10-15 years. I just retired and I was hardly rich but am able to live comfortably. Most importantly you have to have a passion, a calling for education and if that passion dies, it’s time to leave. I don’t know if teachers in FL are unionized or how salary scales work in their districts but in CA our salaries are governed by the contract that our union bargaining units and the district agree to. The state is not involved. I believe almost all school districts in CA are unionized though charter school teachers are not for the most part.
School starts tomorrow in my former district. I feel a bit out of sorts, but to be honest, I’m looking forward to subbing come December. I figure 2-3 days a week without the responsibilities of a full time teacher will satisfy my teacher cravings. I really will miss it but I knew it was time to retire. Ten years of teaching with stage IV was a wonderful distraction from bc but now it’s time to focus on my family.

Betrayal, love your idea for the Fla. border sign. Sort of amazed at the parents who talk about their children's right to breathe so shouldn't have to wear a mask. I think they have a right to live as well which you the parent may be greatly impeding if you want -- like Delta DeSantis, the right to allow your child to go to school maskless. You may as well push your child in front of a moving car and hope the person can stop the car. You all seem to like to challenge your child which is fine because your the parent -- but not fine when someone tires hard to protect them from a killer disease, that upsets you because freedom you know. Everyone wants to play politics with kids -- the most precious thing we have in our life. I sort of understand DeSantis -- but these parents. That is something else.

Nice if they could figure out you don't get a do-over when it is something like covid.
