Jim Acosta Suggest Naming COVID Variants After Republican Governors
CNN's Jim Acosta said that people should not have to die so the GOP can "own the libs," and suggested that COVID variants be named after Republican governors.
Read more »I'm all for this. No better way to make those who are being so atrocious to their constituents in particular and the government in general be reminded about accountability. Keep it uppermost at all times that they are fostering the problem they say they are solving. Naturally some are happy about what DeSantis ( of course Abbott too ) is doing but as many of the Reps. are doing -- they bank on having enough in it for them to go against reason and sanity and I think for the Reps. that was in short supply the moment they latched onto Trump.

Opinion: Trump Supporters Plan to Return To the Capitol "Where it All Started" in a "Huge Protest"
A group of Trump supporters promise they are "going back to the Capitol" to protest in support of what they claim are the "political prisoners" charged in the January 6 insurrection.
Read more »Another thing that is going to go backwards if it happens. I must say -- have some people not learned one thing. You don't hold an insurrection and expect people to just believe it was peaceful. Just ludicrous that you would think all those 'videos'' show people/Capitol visitors enjoying their Capitol tour and just being so circumspect. I venture to feel most of those who voted for Biden are not fooled by what the orange guys supporters think and say. They are rioters and nothing can change that.

IllinoisLady, Divine: You made my morning. De Santis is a sociopath. I mean, really "I don't give a blip about Covid" WTF??!!! I laughed a lot but maybe that is a form of Gallows Humour.
-
Well, Elderberry Delta DeSantis is laughable actually. I mean who would think that is what we get as a representative human being. I find it amusing that they have, I presume, schooled themselves in the art of saying what they do with a straight face OR like they really believe what they are saying. I think in some cases that must have taken a lot of work. As in say injecting yourself with bleach to get rid of covid. Easy for Trump to say as he is 'box of rocks' stupid, but DeSantis and Abbott as well as many others are somewhat off, but not really stupid.

I wish justice for the Trump family would move a bit faster. I know it takes a long time, but I'm afraid they'll weasel out from under everything and go on their merry ways.

When DeathSantis took office, I thought anyone would be better than King Ricky Scott. And he did do a few good, environmental things for the state. Protection for the Everglades, off shore drilling. Then he got his nose up tRumps ass, and it all went to hell.

Our last governor.

First thing that I have ever agreed with Rick Scott on!
I loved all the inspirational stories coming from the Olympics. Here's just one:
-
If that's all it takes to "humiliate" Trump, I'm all for it.
Trump is not the leader of the GOP! Trump is not the leader of the Republican Party! Trump is not the leader of his own company!
xD

pingpong, I wish those wheels of justice turned a little faster, too, so we could see the orange thing go bust!
Ruth, I thoroughly enjoyed the Olympics and watched a good bit of events. Swimming, gymnastics, track and field, volleyball, water polo, platform and springboard diving and perhaps what astounds me most: synchronized diving—when done at the Olympic medal level, it’s the embodiment of poetry in motion. I’m so happy the Olympic organization was able to work around Covid19 for the games to be held; the athleticism was, as always, jaw dropping.

Ruth - that made me laugh out loud!

Divine,
I was lucky enough to attend the Summer Olympics in Montreal in 1976. I saw Bruce Jenner win the decathlon and Nadia Comanici score her perfect 10's. It was a very busy 2 weeks, since we (my mother and I) went to 2 to 3 events a day. I'd love to be able to go to the Winter Olympics, but ticket prices are way higher than they were in 1976 and I'd never be able to afford it! I remember the cheapest tickets we got were $2 (swimming heats) and the highest were $24 (gymnastics finals.)
-
pingpong, that is the coolest thing that you were at the Summer Olympics in Montreal! You got to see some very memorable events! I well remember watching them on TV. Those ticket prices were incredible, too!
The Olympics were a breath of fresh air. Over the two weeks, the display of sportsmanship was a welcoming contrast to U.S. politics:
"At the end of the men's marathon, Somali-born Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands yelled over his shoulder to Belgium's Bashir Abdi, his training partner who was also born in Somalia and was battling a leg cramp -- "Waryaa soo caraar!" "Brother, keep running!" -- urging him to pass Kenya's Lawrence Cherono so they could grab silver and bronze together behind marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge, who smashed the field by some 80 seconds.
Such acts of encouragement and kindness among athletes is what keeps competition ethical, ensuring moments in which the will to win makes room for sportsmanship, often regardless of team or country. In Tokyo, we saw American Isaiah Jewett and Botswan's Nijel Amos fall to the track in the men's 800m, their feet and legs tangled, and then get up with their arms around each other and jog together to the finish line; Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim negotiate with an official -- "Can we have two golds?" -- instead of holding a jump off against friend and rival Gianmarco Tamberi from Italy; and American swimmers embrace stunned South African rival Tatjana Schoenmaker when she won gold and set a world record in the breaststroke."
-
I shed many happy tears over the incidents you mentioned, Divine, and many more. I am going to have "Olympics Withdrawal' because that is almost all I watched the last two weeks. But there is hope for us Olympic junkies; the Summer Paralympic Games start August 24th. The 2022 Winter Olympics open February 4, 2022.
-
Pingpong, a friend of mine was at the 1976 Olympics too! She was (and still is) very involved with swimming & diving (as a coach) on the national level. Maybe you sat next to her at one of the swimming events! She went to several Olympics during those years when it was more affordable for ordinary people. (Including Munich in 1972 when terrorists murdered several Isreali athletes.....a very scary situation for everyone there.)
-
Reading the comments here makes me realize another major reason I, too, was so emotional watching the Olympics this year. It takes me back to my childhood. Growing up, we always watched them on TV. Yes, my rather dysfunctional family had its times of normalcy such as when we gathered in the living room to enjoy the summer and winter Olympics. Both my parents loved the competition and incredible athleticism and they also loved all the human interest stories. I think since Dad's parents were from Poland and Mom's parents were from Italy, the gathering of athletes from countries world-wide to compete in sporting events held an even deeper meaning to them. I also realize in hindsight that my dad, who was into the male dominated sports outside the Olympics, was always very much impressed with the female athletes who participated in Olympic games. Even tho Dad had four daughters, most of the time he wasn't much impressed with female accomplishment, but he put those views aside when it came to the Olympics.
I remember the Munich tragedy. I was a teenager, and the senseless violence was so sickeningly awful to hear about. Jim McCay was the ABC sports announcer who came on the air reporting on it and did not mince words about the 11 athlete hostages killed.
"In life, your greatest fears and your greatest hopes are seldom realized. Our worst fears have been realized tonight …They're all gone." -
I remember Jim McKay saying, "They're all gone." Divine, did you know that one of the athletes who was murdered was from Cleveland? He had dual citizenship and was able to compete under the Israeli flag.
