So...whats for dinner?
Comments
-
Carole: That is one of my pet peeves as well...my BF does not take stuff out of his pockets and all kinds of things go through the wash...score cards, money, but the worst is kleenex when it gets all over the rest of the clothes. I'm of the same mind as you...I don't check pockets!
-
Yumm Eric, that sounds great!
-
Aircard? As in cellular data aircard? I'm an engineer for Verizon Wireless.
Kleenix is nearly the worst in a pocket. Our daughter had a candle in one of her pockets. After going throught the dryer...that might be worse than. Kleenix....
Eric -
As a reformed non-pocket checker, I agree with the forgotten tissues being just a huge pain! I once washed and dried my DH's Ipod Shuffle and, while I am sure it shortened it's life, it still worked afterward.... Couldn't believe it!!
-
I haven't been eating very well for the past week. (My salad dinners I've been posting in here made up the bulk of my daily food....) I still wasn't super hungry for dinner tonight, despite not having lunch today.
My husband took me out for a little dinner date. We went to the sushi place we had our first date, and I ate more there than I've eaten any day this week- I had a bowl of miso soup, we split an order of veggie tempura, and I ate an avocado roll and a cucumber roll, plus a bit of seaweed salad. Then, on our way home we stopped at a frozen yogurt place and we had some froyo.
Afterwards, we went home and took a nap together on the sofa. A very nice evening, and I feel so much better after I ate a whole meal's worth of food.
-
Eric, great meal!
We stopped at West End Johnnies on the way to the Boston Garden (Celtic's home), and I had a very tasty lobster/sweet potato chowder, and a not so great spinach salad. I am a major salad maker at home and should stay away from them at less than four star restaurants.
Cottontail, I'm really happy that you were able to get some good food into you...and it sounded like a sweet date!
Our night at the game was high spirited....game seven after all...seemed like every crazed sports fan in Boston was there except for our DS2 who had to attend the BD party of a good friend. The hyperactive (probably drunk) twentysomething in front of me made it hard to see anything on the court, so I was glad when he apparently got lost at half-time.The Sixers fought sooo hard. But the Celts pulled it off, and now they have to face Miami. I can just imagine how many hours of PT and massage, etc. these guys will be having before the next game.
Deb, hope all is continuing to improve with you. -
Since I have been off on disability, I have actually had time to make things. Before it would be quick spaghetti with sauce out of the can, or hamburgers, anything that didn't have many steps to it.
Today, for the first time ever (I am 43) I made meatballs. I bought a membership to Allrecipes.com. I have made my own alfredo sauce, which was much less complicated than i thought.
I still use spaghetti sauce out of a can, but I add to it - onions, garlic, Italian seasoning and let it simmer for a while. We also had bread and salad (yeah, it was out of a bag, but baby steps!)
I am looking forward to cooking more.
If you haven't tried it, making the Stroganoff off of the back of a campbell's soup can is a good meal!
Amy
-
Amy, hi and welcome! I love the allrecipes.com one of my favorite sites, but have never bought a membership there, I thought they were free? I do my spaghetti the same way, use the jar stuff and add to it. You'll get lots of good recipes here from some pretty fabulous women and men too.
Carol- What an air card?
Just watched " A little bit of heaven" on payper view, it was a tear jerker. Kate hudson plays a colon cancer patient. It was cute though.
-
Deb, my real weight loss started with the 5 days I was in the hospital after my BMX. I could not eat the food. I had brought my own muesli, so I ate that for breakfast, but otherwise I did not eat much.
Eric, that sounds like a good meal.
Amy, so glad you are getting into cooking. It really doesn't have to be super difficult or even time-consuming and it is both healthier and cheaper to cook proper food.
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Laurie- hope you are have a fun day and are celebrating! Love and hugs!!

Preamble:
we live on what was an old farm and the property is covered with gorgeous weeds. I like to see how they bloom. I have a friend who is going to come over and show me what is edible. I have quite a few unusual things growing in my garden including kale and swiss chard.. which are not so unusual.. i wish they would grow. my herbs are doing wonderfully including sorrel which is a sour leaf used for soup, healing and in salads in the middle Europe. If you find sorrell snap it up.. it's really good.
I have put young dandelion shoots in my early salads.. they taste like dandylions. I put some of these weeds in the oriental dishes i try. What is really interesting to me, is to visit my Korean friends' store. They have all sorts of dried veggies (dried sweet potatoe stems. dried snake eye grass (i kid you not, dried fish skin, dried). They know i have cancer and the grandmother always encourages me to try these foods. dried seaweed shreds, dried oak leaves... I am still alive. They don't want me to pay for them either... they ordered them for me they said and other people will provide the profit so i have to like to gracefully accept them which i am happy to do.. i take them home and try them.
I do buy plenty of produce there.. every sort of mushroom (except morels) that one could want, as well as sauces, teas and this wonderful food which is a tube of rice product...
they cook the rice, mash it, let it dry and then extrude it thru a machine in hose like shapes. you slice the tubes very thin and stir fry with veggies. They absorb all the burntish crisp sauce and make ABSOLUTELY the most delicious dishes. They gave me a sample and it took me a little experimentation. - a great way to go gluten free. they are seriously chewy and very unusual i would think to the western palate. They are almost indescribably good.. super chewy.. is an unusual way and flavors change as they are absorbed. Seriously good with snow peas.
here is a nice picture of them...http://www.seriouseats.com/2010/11/seriously-asian-korean-rice-cakes.html
After trying many recipes, i simply like to slice them on the diagonal thinly and start wokking with garlic, olive oil, sesame oil and throw these in. they readily absorb flavor.. i add a bit of hoisin sauce or anything like that.. maybe anchovy paste, bean paste, and soy sauce.
i let them get kind of burnt around the edges.. and then sautee some oriental veggies in the same pan... peas, beans, broccoli, mushrooms, green onions.. whatever.
I also made coconut pudding last nite, out of outofdate coconut, milk and some pretty lame tapioca pudding that I bought.. omgosh it was delicious. Thank goodness this little family came over just in time to help me eat it. I would have eaten the whole pot.

Eric, your salmon meal sounds very healthy. I would like it but DH would be going out for a hamburger or Subway sandwich. He refuses to like salmon!
We're longtime Verizon customers and the air card is for internet connection. DH has it plugged in and is connected to it right now on his laptop. Isn't it amazing that it went through the wash and works? It was pretty expensive, as I recall so I really hated killing it when I thought it was dead! We use the air card during the summer when we're rv travelling.
Amy, welcome. Cooking is risky, I must warn you. When you start preparing tasty meals for yourself, you're no longer satisfied with mediocre out of the box, out of the can, and take-out. All of the above are very high in sodium and mystery ingredients.
I'm the guilty party with kleenex in the pocket. I've found that the dryer does a good job of separating tissue from clothes!
I seldom fry anything at home and I'm not good at frying. Last night's breaded and fried oysters were not as good as those served on poboys at our favorite hole in the wall poboy restaurant, Pontchartrain Poboys. At noon the line sometimes is out of the door. What you want is a crispy exterior on the oysters and a tender interior. I give myself a C minus.
Apple, loved reading your post. Your Korean friends sound so kind. I would really like to go with you to their store. We have a friend over on the MS coast whose yard is probably a lot like yours. She prizes her blooming weeds. I'm sure her neighbors aren't impressed with her grown-up yard but she's a strong-minded woman and they probably don't dare say anything to her! She's also a dog person and cooks brown rice and veggies for her dogs. She claims they don't like white rice!
Happy Sunday to all.

Waiting for my doctor to come in then my last tx of antibiotics then checking out. Probably about 4 this afternoon.
I had a delishish oatmeal pancake breakfast ate it all. All day yesterday i just nibbled cux the percocet made me so sick.
((((Everyone))))
-
Apple, thanks for the introduction to the rice cakes site....they sound so interesting....will have to find a Korean store. I love how your friend's grandmother nurtures you with what she knows best. I am not too adventurous about eating weed-like items since I have some serious allergic reactions to dandelions and such. But I can enjoy looking at their blooms in fields from a car window.
. My sage has a lovely bloom right now.
Deb, I'm glad you are on the mend, and will be set free soon.....:)
I love how I learn new things on this thread....not even about BC or food! I was unaware of the air card, but would love to get one.....not sure why DH has never pushed for that.
Is it functional for one's IPAD, or just laptops. I swear I have practically abandoned my laptop for my Ipad....probably when I am no longer at work I will reunite with my laptop since I don't word process on this little baby.
Happy Birthday Laurie! -
Lacey, Eric can tell you all about the air card. I don't understand techy things. I just use them! You have to plug the air card into an electric outlet. We use it in our rv. I don't have a smart phone or I Pad. The only time I'm connected to the internet is when I'm using my lap top, which I love. It's new and so fast. My old one was outdated and slow. It's in the closet along with a collection of desk top towers! Need to find some place to get rid of them.
This afternoon I'm going to bake bread. Got the Biga (starter) out of the freezer along with the flour. Also the dough for tonight's pizza.
I kinda want to get a smart phone eventually but I don't like the way people who have them seem to be using them all the time. I seldom chat on my cell phone. I like to have it with me in case of an emergency or if I need to call my mother and ask her if she needs anything from Walmart while I'm there. We use very few of our minutes.
DH is watching the 500. The cars sound like angry bees.
-
It has been a while since I have checked in. Good to catch up with all of you. I had Domino's amazing veggie pizza last night, salad, and cake, and a yummy pinia colada drink my hubby made
-
I've got my sourdough starter warming up so I make some more bread and Sharon is going to a play with some others from the area that are here on BC.org.
DD and I are going to a baseball game.
Remember the advertisement showing the guy walking around and asking "Can you hear me now?" The best way to describe my job is..."I'm the one he's talking to." :-)
-
Carole, I would not worry about becoming a smart phone overuser. I think most in our generation can temper the need to be constantly attached to it. I am still offended by the basic lack of civility we see with iphone use. I rarely use mine (which makes my DH a bit nuts when he is calling me and I don't answer ...but he is surgically attached to his since all of his work contacts use that number), but do love all of the functions in one little "machine". For example (hee hee) I loved being able to take a moving shot of the wild guy in front of me last night at the game to send it to my sons so they would know that I wasn't just an old fogie complaining about a spirited fan! They sometimes complain that we don't stand up enough at playoff games.....oh well! I did make my point with my Iphone and spared them any more of my words.
I am however addicted to my ipad.....it is so convenient! I love that nothing has to boot up....even tho my laptop is really efficient, I hate draggin it around, so this little item is majorly convenient. I just still have to get the app to allow me to word process on it, since I still use the computer for that.
Getting ready to head to a graduation party for my next door neighbor's son. They are Lebanese and Syrian, and their food spread is always unbelievable. DH even skipped lunch (a rarity!) in anticipation. -
Tis the season for grad parties...we attended two back to back yesterday, so I was stuffed with food and dessert that isn't good for me, but at least I enjoyed it!
Played golf today with my new clubs...I LOVE, LOVE them! They performed really well for me and I actually beat my BF when he applied my handicap. He's always happy when this happens....as long as it doesn't happen too often, because that usually means he isn't playing that well! The other couple we played with were great and we enjoyed their company, so it made for a nice morning. Nice lunch at the club after, and now I'm home thinking about a nice nap!
Deb: Glad you tx is almost over and you will be able to go home soon.
Laurie: Happy Birthday!
-
Hi everyone...not much time before we go to dinner. But with this link you can read about our first day in Paris (yesterday). I cannot believe that it's 9 p.m. and still daylight. The sun sets very late in Paris this time of year....very nice. And the weather is spectacular - 80 and sunny.
-
Michelle, WOW!!! What an incredible apartment in a dream city...so happy to see that you are already having a fabulous time. We did also enjoy some delightful meals in the neighborhood cafes.
Love your blog! -
now that my kids are teenagers they are often gone for dinner.. I was going to grill 8 big burgers.. and now.. I'm not sure.. maybe 4 or maybe 8 and they can eat them for leftovers. the meat looks fantastic for ground cow.
-
Apple- Omg, you just made me miss my favorite korean place in hawaii called Shillawon there food was fantastic she made the rice cakes how you described and they are delicious, she also made cone sushi it is rice cakes wrapped in a sweet kind of like pastry. Yummm! Dont know about trying the snake stuff but who knows the korens live long lives. Your pudding sounds delish too.
Deb- So glad you are getting out today, now you can enjoy the rest of the 2 days of the 3 day holidays. Hope the antibiotics did its job and you feel better.
Zumbagirl- Good to see you again. how is your weather over there? We are suppose to have descent weather ( I hope) here on the coast.
Eric- You sound like quite the cook, making sourdough starter and all. Does your wife sharon come to bco?
-
How did i miss a whole page?
Michelle- I saw your pictures on Facebook, what a lovely place and love the apartment you are staying in. So glad you are enjoying yourself and the beautiful weather you are having there too.
-
Michelle, your first day in Paris sounds idyllic. And the apartment is gorgeous. I would love to stay in it anywhere!
Deb, I hope you're home by now and on the mend.
-
We decided to pass on dinner out with friends tonight since we have a full day tomorrow and dinner plans later. So made some really good patty melts with garlic fries. I sauted the onions until they were carmalized (about 30 minutes) used freshedly ground chuck from kobe after cooking meat i put meat onions and pepper jack (since we like it better than swiss) grilled on rye bread. It was delicious. We ate so early i will def have room for peach pie later!
Everyone have a safe and fun memorial day!
-
Michelle,
I am not on Facebook so am so happy that you are posting updates on your blog!!! I have always wanted to see Italy and France.... This year I am celebrating my 50th B-Day and also our 25th wedding anniversary but with airfare to Europe being so expensive it put it outside of our budget.... We will be doing a Caribbean Cruise this fall instead.... Looking forward to sharing your travels vicariously!!! One day I will make it to Europe so looking forward to your 'insider tips'!!! Hope all goes well and you all thoroughly enjoy your trip!! -
Debbie,
Those Pattie Melts sound delicious!! And yes, there's always room for dessert, especially peach pie!! -
Just back from a couple of days down the shore. Seems like I missed a lot.
Deb, hope you are home, feeling well and relaxing by now.
Laurie, hope you had a great birthday!
Had some good crab soup today and some great pizza yesterday. We're only about 80 miles from the shore, but the pizza is so different down there. I think it has something to do with the water being harder and that making the dough different. Or maybe on vacation everything just tastes better. -
Wowee Zowee Michelle! The room my daughter and I rented for the turn of the century celebration New Years 2000 in Paris had miniature beds and was quite expensive. That place is awesome!
Laurie, Happy Birthday!
Apple, I love to make Kim chi. I went to elementary school with a friend whose Mom is Korean and published a cookbook, but it is the Kim chi I crave. I'm not sure it's good for me. My garden with Kale and all looks OK today. Going to put in more tomatoes, and cucumbers tomorrow. It's a community garden, so I rotate my crops. I liked reading your post. Mint is abundant and we take all we want because it is so invasive
I am enjoying being alone all weekend so far. I am reading, and shopping. I love my friends but I like my alone time a lot and have to stop feeling guilty about that. I think that my friends understand, we are pretty understanding.
I am reading The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.
