So...whats for dinner?

Joyce can't make it.
-
I am very sad I can't make it either. Especially since the odds of me even getting in the church for my friends sisters funeral are slim to none. I will probably never even see her- but I can't not go.
It makes me remember the funeral of my closest friends sister back in 1998. Her little sister passed from BC at the age of 26. I went to the calling hours and waited in line for almost two hours before I made it inside. Her funeral I could not get in the door. I guess the difference is when you die young- everyone else is still alive? It's more tragic? I don't know....

bedo's grand-dog Nellie.
-
Seaside- Thanks for the info on the peepers! Im glad you found the peppadews they are so good on grilled cheese sandwichs, also stuff with feta cheese, put them in my cornbread with cheedar cheese. I called around looking for those before, because i couldnt find them and would ask "Do you carry peppadews?" One guy said whats a peppadew? me being silly by this time said, "Not much" i started laughing and was going to tell him what they were when he hung up on me LOL!
Deb- That is one uhgggglyyy frog!! Hope everything goes well at your appointments tomorrow
Michelle- Sounds like you had a great fun day with the DGK;s I bet they think you are the best Grandparent ever!
Joyce- You are always soooo busy, how do you keep up? The weather has been weird everywhere, Salem which is about 1 hour from us got slammed with almost 8 inches of snow they havnt had anything near that since like 1916 the weather is wacko but in your case its good because its so nice
My turkery burgers were so good i made baked sweet potato fries felt so healthy that i think i can have some popcorn and a small peice of chocolate! Yeah!
-
Laurie- I know, funerals are so hard especially when they are so young. It seems like the older i get the more stuff i go through because everyone else is getting older too. (((hugs))))
-
Bedo- Aww Nellie is so cute, how old is she? she is darling. Thanks for posting this for her deb.
-
Apple, will try a pot of sorrel this year. Intrigued. Wish we knew what that meatball recipe was, sounded interesting.

food trivia for the day... lutefisk.. I've never tried it - probably won't but it has sustained a large portion of northern Europe for centuries. Salt cod is readily available and must be soaked for days but it is not the same. Salt cod has to be a good food product.. it sustained a hemisphere. I wish i could try some around here. I think i could pass on the real lutefish preserved with lye.. why?
I love this Garrison Keillor comment from one of his books -
"Lutefisk is cod that has been dried in a lye solution. It looks like the desiccated cadavers of squirrels run over by trucks, but after it is soaked and reconstituted and the lye is washed out and it's cooked, it looks more fish-related, though with lutefisk, the window of success is small. It can be tasty, but the statistics aren't on your side. It is the hereditary delicacy of Swedes and Norwegians who serve it around the holidays, in memory of their ancestors, who ate it because they were poor. Most lutefisk is not edible by normal people. It is reminiscent of the afterbirth of a dog or the world's largest chunk of phlegm."I am a Catholic and every Friday mr. apple volunteers at the Shrimp Dinner.. yay - no cooking for me. I actually am going to stop by tonite and just have beans, potatoes and corn.. they are so delish. The bean dish has 6 gallons of canned grean beans.. 15 pounds of sour cream, tabasco, a few cans of cheese sauce and are really unbelievably tasty. Joe Mika's recipe .. and it has been the same for years.

Taking the day off and estate sale shopping with a good friend.. (i might have an early piano lesson.. we'll see. Have a wonderful day all. It is really going to be glorious weather today.. Spring is soooo early and everything, even the trees are greening.. Usually they don't leaf properly until April 10th,

Joyce - I am so sad that you can't make it.
But I understand...with everything going on in your life things are a bit upside down. I will call you later. I thought about calling last night but was afraid it was too late. Then I noticed you had posted about 20 minutes earlier.
Bedo - your granddog is cute!
Apple - Garrison Keillor is a hoot! Hope your estate sale shopping turns up a real treasure!
Laurie - I hope you make it into the church. I know what you mean - there is always a big turnout especially for a young person. I went to a funeral for the daughter of a co-worker a few years ago. They had it in the school gymnasium as it was the only place in town big enough to hold everyone. And it let the family focus the funeral on more of a celebration of her life rather than a sad, somber service.

Morning ladies: Glad everyone is having such wonderful weather! Here in Florida it's usually the same until around May and then it gets very hot and humid and we head for the mountains!
Bedo: doggie is precious...I want one, but then we would have to cart the poor thing back and forth to NC and Fl every year. DGD had a little Minpin that she was trying to find a home for and I almost took him, but her girlfriend stepped up, so I resisted. He was so tiny and adorable. I understand he lives like a little prince now...with doggie clothes and everything!
Joyce: So sorry about the death of all your friends...even more so that they are coming all at once. Prayers for you and for their families.
Laurie: Even though you may not get into the church it means so much to people that you come and pay your respects. That was such a tragic accident.
Went out to dinner to celebrate boyfriend's birthday last evening. Had the works...potato encrusted scallops for appetizer, salad, yellowtail snapper, and rasberry sorbet in an almond nest for dessert...oh, and a glass of champagne. Not exactly on the diet, but I enjoyed it nevertheless:) This place has wonderful brunches on Sunday...almost anything you could want from a fresh raw bar to exquisite desserts...all you care to have for $21.00 pp. I can never eat enough to justify that, but still, it's a good value for the kind of food that they serve. It's called Blue Moon Fish Company and they are located on the Intracoastal Waterway in Ft. Lauderdale, off Commercial Blvd. for anyone who might be traveling this way.
Going up to see DGD in W. Palm today...it's a drive, but I try to do it at least once a week. She is growing so fast and has new words for me each week.
Have a wonderful Friday everyone!
-
Thanks Deb! Call me tonight, or give me your number and I'll call you. Nellie is about 8? She is from a pound in Alabama, so we're not too sure, but she loves going to the dog park and the community organic garden with grandma when DD is at work.
I will miss those not there tomorrow.
I hope everyone has a great weekend TGIF!!!!!
-
Laurie - I'm so sorry about your friend's sister. What a tragedy! It's tragedies like this that remind us just how precious life is.
Michelle - I just sent you a PM with my cell phone number so we can talk about plans for tomorrow.
Gotta run principal just walked in with a question about a student.
-
The turkey burger recipe looks interesting. I'll have to write it down.
I have never seen or tasted sorrel, either, though I have heard of it.
The parrot joke was cute.
I'm surprised a hawk could kill a full-grown turkey. Our next-door neighbors have/had chickens and the hawks have pretty much killed the flock.
The apple-braised turkey thighs recipe I used last night is quite good. Anyone interested can print it out at the Everyday Cooking (Martha Stewart) web site. I saw the dish prepared on the tv show Everyday Cooking and have cooked the dish several times. It's very easy.
Thank goodness, the rain has ended. Since last Wed. we've had about 5 inches.
Hope everyone has a great Friday.

Scandi lutefisk can be pretty tragic, but salt cod is also a stable food in the Mediterranean. Here the dried fish is soaked and rinsed, cut in smaller pieces, dipped in batter and fried in hot olive oil. It is served with garlic dip, sliced beets and beet greens. The other way to cook it is in the oven (no batter) on a bed of sliced potato, tomato and onion.
-
thanks Momine - how come you know so many interesting things? Are you Scandinavian?
-
Never heard of lutefish either, but my brother uses salt cod for his fish and chips at the restraunt and i love the flavor I cant get it at my local market but love cod.
Carol- the braised apple turkey sounds delish will have to make that sometime.
Kaara- Happy Birthday to the boyfriend, dinner sounds so good!
Laurie- You are on my mind, and hugssss for tomorrow i know it will be a tough day.
Everyone have a fun time tomorrow on your getogethers.!
-
I grew up on both lutefisk and salt cod but I haven't fixed tem in years because DH dosen't like them. Mom always made fish balls of creamed cod with the soaked fish.
-
Kaara- your dinner out sounds like it was really good! I LOVE a good brunch too.
Apple- I hope you had fin today with your estate shopping and yay for a night off of cooking! Enjoy your dinner.
Carol- I am so glad it stopped raining there for you, 5 inches is a lot of water.
Bedo great pic of the grandoggie, she's a cutie!
Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I am going to be up and out of the house by 8 to pick up a friend and drive over. We are going to flip a coin at her house to see who drives. I went and got my eyes checked today since it had not been done since I was 19! I have 20/25 vision which is pretty good! No glasses needed. But I don't ever recall having my eyes dilated before, holy moley!! The drive home was interesting and trying to eat a salad for lunch was interesting too. I couldn't even see what I was stabbing at, lol! So I had a mindless afternoon watching a movie on the couch because I couldn't do much else. I couldn't see the computer, couldn't read and focusing on anything at arms length was impossible so cleaning the bathrooms was out. (Yay!) I watched this foreign film called War in Winter and it was amazing. Nothing DH would watch so it was perfect timing.
My in laws are bring the boys back any minute and I am going to indulge the boys and let them have cheeseburgers again. All week DS #1 insists he can't grow unless he has one. earlier in the week we had them and he ate every bite and was quite proud of himself and wants to do it again. DH and I will make ours patty melts. I don't know if they do those out of New England? It's grilled pumpernickel, sauteed onions and mushrooms, melted swiss and the burger patty. We put mayo and ketchup on ours and it awesome. I am going to off set it with some salad. Now you know why I had salad for lunch! I am going to be bad at dinner
-
I love a good patty melt.
-
Laurie - I think patty melts are pretty universal. My DH loves them, too, and they were on most menus in the Kansas City area.
I went to the grocery store today and saw the meat manager filling shelves. I had to ask about pink slime. He showed me how to figure out which ground beef doesn't have it and which does. He said that Shaws has stopped ordering it so it will soon be out of the chain. He said the meat guys never liked it because it makes a mess when they would grind it with other beef. It's funny, I always thought it was odd that I would buy 96% lean ground beef and there would be this liquid in the pan when I would brown the meat. It really should have been pretty dry. Now it all makes sense. I hope people start making a fuss about the injected saline solution in chicken and pork. That needs to go, too. I think I am going to start buying CSA meat. It will be hormone free and I'll know what I am getting. Expensive, but safer.
-
Michelle- what did he show you? How do you figure it out? I recently checked prices on organic ground beef and it was 5.50 a pound.
-
Laurie - he showed me the organic that was $7.49 a pound!!! LOL!!! With Shaws, you'll see 80% or 85% ground chuck that says it's a product of the US. The other ground beef containing the slime says it's a product of many countries (in other words, they don't really keep track of its origin). So supposedly, if you pick the beef that lists only the US, you are not getting slime. And who was the marketing genius that came up with that descriptor???
-
Laurie- Too funny on the blury eyes, a couple of years ago after leaving the eye dr my eyes were blurry and i backed up then put it in drive and drove over the top of a 3 foot wall i messed up my front end pretty bad DH was so mad at me LOL! I love patty melts we make them pretty much the same, minus the mushrooms and i put jack cheese and 1000 island dressing. MMM its making my mouth water right now.
-
Michelle- I was going to bring this up last night but forgot, we went shopping at safeway last night (They had announced a couple days ago they have pulled anything with pink slime and will no longer use it) So i go over to the meat counter and ask the meat guy if they still use the pink slime he said there are some with it but the ones we make here dont have it, i said how do you know they dont use it, he said because i grind it myself, i said can you point me to the ones you make and are slime free, he points to several packages, i thank him and he walks away i look at the packages and they say "Product of Canada" WTH! I couldnt belive this, so i asked him why it says from Canada if they make it here, he say, oh i guess we are out of the ones we do here. I just said thank-you and walked away, but DH and i were shocked how he tryed to cover up. Bottom line, i dont trust these people and i dont believe they are really pulling it, in fact they dont have to tell us anything so they say what we want to hear. Im disgusted by this. And the kids in the schools ohhh, it makes me so angry they are feeding kids this crap. Why is it just hamburger is the topic in the news it should be chx, sausage, ground turkery, hot dogs. Oh im so ready to become a vegetarian again.
-
I love patty melts, but reading about all the pink slime, I'm glad I haven't had any ground beef in a long while. I normall use ground turkey for most recipes now. Wonder what's in that!
-
I just pattied my burgers. It read "100% ground beef made in store" maybe there's no slime?
-
LOL at Laurie, whose funny typos strike again! Apple I hope you enjoyed your fin while shopping too! Was it Shark fin? Tuna fin? Let us know the recipe!
Just kidding Laurie!
-
What time is Pickety Place? I worked for 12 hours Weds and Thurs and then only 10 today so I'm going to sleep. My eyes are burning, but I will be there or be square. Deb I have to pick up my dump of a New/old car at the garage in the morning and it is a 2 hour drive so I think I will just have to meet you there, although I'm "sure* we will make up the time by talking during lunch, lol.
Is it 12:00 noon? I am too tired to check back in posts. I have a Tom Tom so I'm sure I won't get lost!
See you there, let me know about the time!!!!!
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Sally

Hey bedo, I just called you. Left a Voice Mail.
-
I hope you can make it.
Our seating is at 12:45pm. I have a burgundy PT Cruiser. I'll bring some bug spray.
