hillck.....are you still here? I have a dog problem I could use your advice on. In the last couple of weeks, my dog has decided he's got to lick the cat's ears every minute of every day. What's up with that? We took the cat to the vet to make sure there's nothing in her ears...no infection, no mites..nothing. But the dog just won't stop licking. The dog has been checked for allergies too and he doesn't have any. Any ideas? I'm getting so tired of following them around to stop it. The vet suggested a salt lick.....not helping. This is really grossing me out.

Hey Blue:
....and they're all hanging out under the rocks at Oppossum Ridge!
Sandy
-
Gracie - I'm certainly not an expert but I'd sure try some Bitter Apple on the cat's ears.
-
Thanks Alpal. What is it? Where can I get it? Do you think it's safe to put in her ears?
Edited: Never mind, should have looked it up myself. I'm going to try it.
-
In her ears? Not sure about that. It's a little bottle of spray. I don't think it would hurt her at all on her fur, but not sure on bare skin. Very useful for table legs, etc. Most stores have it - pet department. I'd try to think of something else that the dog would think tastes really bad that wouldn't hurt the cat. Some people use Tabasco in place of bitter apple, but that's on table legs! Would Tabasco hurt skin? I don't know! What about lemon juice? I bet the dog wouldn't like that.
-
Gracey1 and Alpal:
I'd be a little afraid that the cat would get the bitter apple on her tongue when she is grooming and it could cause a problem - she wouldn't want to continue grooming.
You know I think the cat may be getting an infection and the dog spotted it before the vet could - I am always suspicious of "sudden" behaviours., JMO.
Sandy
-
Funny you should say that Sandy.....the cat just lays there and takes it....I guess she thinks since the dog's doing it she doesn't have to. Weird animals. I wonder....if the infection was just getting started, wouldn't the vet have noticed? The more I think about it, the more I think bad taste wouldn't deter him. He'd eat the litter box if I'd let him. Yup, we had to cut a hole in the bottom of a door to keep the dog out and let the cat in. EEEEWWWW!
-
Gracie1:
We had the same problem - two black labs, one poor cat and his litter box - double EEEEEEWWWWWW!
They're all gone now and I have a 12 year old bichon and when she had "her" cats - same problem, YUCK!

Gracie1 - Although this youtube doesn't offer a solution, it is funny/cute...

Google:
Why does my dog lick my cat's ears?
Because the cat lets him!
It's affection, it's natural how they care for one another in a pack setting. It's a social thing and just showing the love.
Plus, kitty's ears smell and taste good!LOL
-
Being a bit of a germaphobe, it's kinda gross to me, but hey....if it's affection, I should be happy.

I'm channeling JFK today. (The post by Petrichor on behalf of Eff provided me with the motivation.) JFK would be a moderate by today's standards, yes? I do like the quote Petrichor gave us. If you close your eyes and sit really quietly, it's possible to hear JFK's voice:
"We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people."
But, there are so many others...
"The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie -- deliberate, contrived and dishonest; but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought."
And,... "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."
Finally, there is this one, which is an excerpt from a speech he was planning to give at the Dallas Trade Mart on November 22, 1963:
"There will always be dissident voices heard in the land, expressing opposition without alternatives, finding fault but never favor, perceiving gloom on every side and seeking influence without responsibility."
Tomorrow I think I'll be feeling more Jeffersonian. Here's a preview, taken from his first inaugural address:
"... having banished from our land that religious intolerance under which mankind so long bled and suffered, we have yet gained little if we countenance a political intolerance as despotic, as wicked, and capable of as bitter and bloody persecutions."
Or, perhaps there will be a smattering of others on the issue of free speech. That topic seems stuck in my thoughts today.

Yep it's like a sickness!
-
It IS a sickness. They need some serious medical and psychological intervention.

Well I have better things to do than watch idiots playing games. CYA.........Blue has been banned until April 2nd. Guess the truth hurt. Ciao, ciao!
-
I guess the powers that be have decided if they ignore the problem it will go away. Doesn't seem to be working.
-
That was simply amazing. The pronoun "They" was the only subject identifier used in that post. No names were named; nothing specifically slanderous was said.
Speaking generally, with reference to no one in particular -- but, rather, based on a lifetime of people-watching: Why is it that some people seem to think everything is always about them?
The truth is, I wasn't posting to offer any lessons to people who might be lurking on this thread with their "Report" fingers at the ready. I was posting quotes that I happen to like, and that I think are relevant to today's politics. That's what we do on this thread, after all. It isn't time for supper yet, and we haven't had today's 'possum report.
As for dogs that lick cats' ears... Dogs have an extraordinary sense of smell. They do enjoy stinky stuff (thus their rolling in fish carcasses on the beach, and snacking in the litter box). But they also try to keep things clean (think about where dogs lick themselves). So, I wouldn't be surprised if the dog had detected something tasty ( = stinky) in the kitty's ears. The kitty sat still for it, because the licking probably felt good. (Some cats love to have their ears rubbed.) Or, the two of them might have been partaking in some mutual grooming 'cause they're buddies.

I am way too dizzy today to figure out what the crap is going on but going to add my two cents. It is against the law to censor websites (that is in the U.S.) and there is at least one website that has been backing up the internet daily since 1996 (waybackmachine.org) On the other hand if trolls and spammers can access this site what is to stop them from deleting posts. Limit the number of deletions per person just like limiting number of posts per newbie. Any website can end up with someone who is mentally unstable.
-
Blue is banned for a whole flippin' month?!?!?!?!????
-
This deleting of posts is getting really stupid! Seems like we have a witch hunt going on.
-
That's brilliant Immarybell!
-
5 4 3 2 1 Poof!
Edit -- oh, well I'm out of synch with the deleters. Make me look schtupid.
-
Borrowing this from one of my favorite posters. Thanks! DILLIGAF ???
-
(DILLIGAF?)
For the deleters, why not stroll over to 'Why Controlling the Infusion Time For Tea is Important' http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/119/topic/764516?page=1#idx_18
Not to delete anyone there for the love of Pete, but to decompress from your hectic day of deleting by reading about the ancient, and apparently very complicated, art of steeping tea.

Melissa, keep leaving us alone. It's more fun like this.
-
ladysuz was back! and I missed her
If you are still reading Suz it is wonderful to see you again! I'm sure whatever you said made perfect sense ... therefore it was zapped. Wonder if Amy and Felicia and Donna and all the other women who were run off the board back then would like to come back and play again too? Nope ... probably not.
The lunatics have totally taken over for the last couple of days. It's like when the blackbirds swarm my bird feeders and crap all over everything and run the cardinals and blue jays and all the other birds away. We have to quit putting out food until they give up and go away.
Sorry you are stepping away for a bit Rosemary. I suspect you will find like I did that I miss the smart, nice, witty, funny, friendly sane people here too much to stay away. You are one of the ones that lured me back so I expect to see your smiling face again before too long
I'm sure blue will be reinstated and back shortly also.
This display of insanity is curable.
A combination of restricting the Report this Post function to users with over say 100 posts ... and showing the name of the 'reporters' should put a stop to most of it.
It just remains to be seen if something effective will finally be done or not. I hope Melissa is aware of how bad it has gotten and is off consulting with her technical people to speed up some changes.
Wishful thinking ...
-
This is the best example of why people should not be allowed to carry guns. They shoot. The gun is the "Report this Post" button. Whoever reports this is pro-gun.
-
Whoever reports this is anti-gun.
