Odd weather all over. Yesterday here, if you would have started at Point A and driven 200 miles to Point B, you would have experienced a 40 degree temperature change!

I did FIRM Cardio Party and am now making a yummy German dish (from DH's mother) involving butter, onions, ham, potatoes & noodles......not really a health food recipe!

60's all week in Denver. It was gorgeous today, but I didn't spend enough time outside... I worked a health fair table from 7 - 12 noon, then went to a fund raiser for my daughter's school and to see my mother. So now, off for a walk before the sun sets.

Yes, the weather here is a cool 75, which is out of the ordinary for April. It is very enjoyable for outdoor activities. Today I asked at the trail and rode my bike with DH. We cooked out and hung out on the porch. I could get use to this weather.

I did the Emerald City Bicycle Ride today to celebrate the opening (well, not quite yet) of the new largest floating bridge in the World over Lake Washington. Only about 20 miles and more waiting than cycling. But well worth the effort and great fun.

Personal triumph that the hill I had always walked was NOTHING to cycle up at this point. It was wonderful too to see the wonderful vistas. Not to mention the special edition fortune cookies.  Bummer is that my shifter for the smaller gears needs a bit of attention so my bicycle is in the shop.

Feeling fit an happy in Seattle. - Claire

hi all and congrats Claire on PB. Concert was great then spent the night at mom's so had lots to do today. Nice day lured me out for a quick walk when I got home. Just 30 mins but felt good after lots of sitting. Made roast chicken for supper & stock simmering now. Back to work tomorrow so bedtime soon. ♥

it was a beautiful weekend. Today was DH 60th birthday and we celebrated most of the weekend but we did get to the new fitness center we recently joined yesterday and today. We are starting from scratch again but I did recumbent bike for 30 minutes, treadmill for 15 minutes and 2 mile outdoor walk both days. This was good start for us.

Took 5 days off from the gym, busy at work and just being with my friend, went back yesterday and did RPM, Body Pump and Body Combat then this morning did an hour of weight training with a friends DH, she was taking a class and he is really knowledgeable so it was like a free workout with a personal trainer then another Body Combat class.

Welcome to all the newbies. Balthus that sure is a beautiful spot to walk and if you just do a little each day this exercise thing will just fall into place, after I was cleared to go back to the gym I spent a lot of time on the recumbent bike, I had a single mastectomy on my right and when I was allowed back to my classes I didn't have a great ROM so I used to put my hand on my hip and just wave my left hand around I remember driving and thinking to myself I really shouldn't be allowed because I couldn't turn my head to look over my shoulder

Mary I am so sorry to hear about your friend, I remember you speaking of her, glad M is on the mend, give him my best and of course a big hug to Mikey. Claire what a fabulous accomplishment. Wonderland congrats on the win, now for the last round, fingers crossed. Patoo can you tell me what you do in your bone builders class, I'm really interested. Katcar yes it is rampant and I feel so bad for the young ones, I get so mad when you read about those who are ignored because it has an age tagged to it.

Welcome to all the newbies! As others have said, check out the info in this thread about starting back on an exercise program after b/c surgery: https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/58/topics/801453 Be careful not to overdo - this is one time when "no pain, no gain" does NOT apply. The links in the first post of the thread contain detailed info on starting back doing yoga, weights, cardio, etc. And of course listen to your surgeon's restrictions on activity during the post-surgical period.

DH's back is better, so I was able to get out yesterday for a nice 3 mile run. This was after going to the visitation at the funeral home for my co-worker. A lot of people were wearing teal in her honor (that's ovarian cancer's color) and as she'd wanted. There was a basket of teal wristbands and teal ribbons, plus information cards about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. She was passionate about educating women about ovarian cancer, right up till the end. The family said they will keep the run/walk team going in her memory, so we'll still run our 5K for the local ovarian cancer awareness event in September.

And we have another funeral home visitation tonight for a co-worker's father. He dropped dead of a heart attack at the grocery store. He'd had heart problems but seemed to be stabilized, so it was not expected. While it's tough on the family, they are very grateful that he didn't suffer at all. He loved to go to the grocery store, so they're taking comfort knowing he died doing something he enjoyed.

The Health section of the paper last week had an article about the importance of core workouts, and had a suggested 15 minute core workout. I tried it this morning, and it seemed to be a good workout. It did take me closer to 25 minutes to do 3 reps of 15, and doing both sides. But I had good muscle fatigue by the end.

If anyone is looking for a core workout, here's the article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/wellness/why-you-need-a-strong-core-even-if-you-can-only-dream-of-a-six-pack/2016/03/29/6c24f994-eae6-11e5-bc08-3e03a5b41910_story.html

Oh yea, you've got to do the core. It's the foundation of everything. I know yoga has really been good for me in both the core and balance departments. Speaking of which, I am off to yoga right now. Zumba tonight.

I agree on keeping the core strong. I see so many people in needless pain because their back isn't supported. That's why I do my crunches every single day. Cycling is also great for the core, but not running. You use those muscles just staying upright on the bicycle! Even more when doing hills. Not to mention that you are basically doing a plank every time you get up onto the seat.

From the past 3 weeks of cycling and skiing, I can feel a major change in my midsection. (Note that abs love to be lazy and need a reminder of what their duties are.)

Here is a picture of me on the bridge yesterday. - Claire

hbcheryl, you would be bored with the bone builders classes because it's slow movements balancing on one leg with a weight on the other or arm movements holding weights. The movements can (do) cause minor discomfit while doing it but the discomfit disappear immediately. I think you may be too used to your high energy, fast classes.

Took walk around my new neighborhood this afternoon. Since I got lost only need another 140 steps to make 10,000. Gonna do that in front of TV before bed.

Freezing here in New York. Snow this morning and sleet this evening. Managed to get to the gym and do my laps. In addition to the freestyle I actually was finally able to do the breast stroke and the back stroke.

Mary, condolences for the loss of your co-worker; I hate this disease. Like the link and core work is important. Claire, you look terrific and yellow suits you! Karen, lucky you to see the boss for 3 and half hours - heaven. GoodbyeGirl, good walking link and that is the first and best place to start to getting back into exercise. Cheryl, I'm spending hours practicing the new Body Balance/Flow new #72 release, that we roll out soon. It's not easy and the balance track total challenge. Wonderland, darling husband bought a new tractor mower, a John Deere that he has been envying and thought of you our #1 mower. Yesterday morning at 5:45 took my 17 year old son to the drop-off for a school trip to Italy. Get this, he will be touring the Ducati motorcycle and Ferrari factory, along with a parmesan cheese and balsamic vinegar factories, as well as seeing everything in Florence including the leaning tower of Pisa. Quiet week ahead on the home front and darling husband has taken most of this week off, so who knows what we will get up to.

Off to the gym to practice and class.

hbcheryl, you should be able to easily find a Tai Chi class somewhere. It is also good for balancing. Otherwise you might be able to find a Bone Builders class somewhere by searching for Tufts University Bone Builders as they are the originators.

Mary, did not express my condolences for your friend and her family Just learned last week during Relay for Life that one of the other volunteers and member of my church recently dx'd with ovarian cancer also. Her surgery scheduled for April 25th. I thought ovarian was very aggressive and they would quick track you to get then out. She's about 6-weeks dx to surgery. Very frightened for her.

Rode bike to rec center this morning and worked on outside resistance weight machines. They are interesting as you cannot adjust the resistance except by gaining or losing weight as it is your own weight you are going against

I went to Cardio Sculpt (we did abs for the whole, entire 'sculpt' section, so my core is temporarily very well worked out!). I subbed this afternoon, Barre is cancelled tonight so I am contemplating either cleaning the house or sitting around and doing nothing.

Wonderland, sorry about NC in the basketball tournament (if others missed it, NC tied it up with a long 3 pointer with just a few seconds left, but then the other team won with another long 3 pointer at the buzzer). I thought I could hear your screams from here!

Patoo, so sorry about your church friend. That seems like an awfully long wait to me too.

Wonderland, OMGosh what a game! My heart leapt then sank with yours in those last few seconds.

patoo, sorry to hear about your friend. Six weeks is a long wait. As we all know, waiting is the worst.

Got in two fast walk breaks around the building yest & today. Found a route that circles the first floor. Five times around is ~ a mile. Hopefully, the people with offices in those hallways are used to me by now. :-)

What a GAME! So sorry we lost but it still was QUITE a GAME! Ruth - you were hearing dh and dd's screams. I could barely watch!

Badger: All eyes are on Wisconsin tonight. Been thinking about you.

LB: I'm so happy for your dh's tractor mower! Would he be willing to come to NC to mow my yard? Please?!?!?! Enjoy your quiet week.

Patoo: That resistant weight machine sounds crazy.

Hi All. No formal exercise today but I wanted to tell you about a new term I learned. I had never heard of a Dogwood Winter. It occurs after the dogwoods bloom and then winter weather comes back. That's what we are experiencing now. I learned there is a Blackberry Winter also. Anyone else every hear of those winters?

    Still wondering where Odie is.

Ginger, congrats on 5 years!!! Wishing you many more years of celebrating!!

Lilac...what a great trip for you son.

Getting back into the swing of things with walking, but still struggling to get to 15K/day...but this week, I'm averaging 14K+ so far. My goal has been 15K/day ..don't want to lower my goal as think I would then slack off!!

DD#2 decided today on which of two camps for the summer...She was offered 2 different positions at 2 different camps...one in CA and one in NY...The one in NY is working with special needs children and adults...This is the position she decided on. She is sending in her contract tomorrow. They even pay air fare for staff that is out of the NJ/NY area...that was a treat to find out....She will be gone just shy of 8 weeks. By the time she gets back, my summer vacation will be over. So I have to get in as much daughter time as I can in June. Two weeks after she gets home, she leaves for the year!! I'm excited for her.

    Congratulations, Ginger!!!!

Karen, I worked in a camp like that for four summers when I was young. One of the best, most special experiences of my whole life (and directly led to my teaching career). I grew a lot more than the people I worked with & still have dear friends from my camp days. I am so happy for her (and for her campers too).

I'm off to walk with the Wednesday ladies.....inside again as it is 28 degrees with a stiff north wind......sigh!

Patoo - six weeks does seem like a long time. My friend was such a resource I could have called her to ask. If your friend is not being treated at an NCI-designated cancer center, maybe you could nudge her to get a second opinion there. She can still keep her original game plan in place, but with all the time before surgery, she could get a second without any disruption to her current game plan. Moffett in Tampa is NCI designated, and usually centers will expedite appointments for the newly-diagnosed.

Ginger - congrats on 5 years! Karen - what a great opportunity for your daughter. She must be very good to get offers from two different places.

Wonder - sorry about the tourney. My bracket got busted when Oklahoma upset Kansas. BTW, we had our annual workplace event at work where we pick a theme, and each team gets a section of the hallway to decorate to the theme, make food for the theme, and do costumes. This year's theme was fairy tales, and my team chose Alice in Wonderland. I think you would have been proud of us as we did Wonderland right and won first prize!! We got a trophy and most importantly, bragging rights till next year. We had an Alice, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, a Mad Hatter, a Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts, several playing card soldiers, etc. We had tarts with EAT ME on them, bottled water with DRINK ME on them, and all kinds of other themed food. I was a hedgehog (like they played croquet with), and I made hedgehog meatballs (meatballs with rice so when cooked the rice sticks out like hedgehog quills). I even made them in the shape of hedgehogs, and used black olives for "eyes".

Here's our White Rabbit and Cheshire Cat

    image

    The Queen of Hearts

    image

    The "Tweedles"

    image

The Caterpillar with the Queen of Hearts, the White Queen, the Mad Hatter, and the Cheshire Cat

    image

Here's a group shot - I'm the hedgehog in the grey in the front right. Alice is next to me - isn't she a perfect Alice? And any of the DC Sculpted Sisters travel group recognize the Mad Hatter? (that's my DH - yes, we work together)

    image

Here's our decorated section of the hallway - notice we did the ceiling, floors, and the walls.

    image

And finally, the trophy! (when you work for a Recreation Dept, there are always a ton of old trophies lying around that can be repurposed)

    image

As you can tell, we had fun. So Wonder, how did we do?

Oh yeah, this is an exercise thread - half hour run yesterday, and did that core workout from the paper again this morning. It's a good one - my core muscles are screaming at me so apparently it's hitting all the right spots!

WWW. OMG, it looks cold outside. Mary, I love where you work and what a hoot! You and your husband look so darling - what fun! Karen, amazing trip and back home Friday night and congrats to your daughter - air fare too-wow. Ginger, well done on the 5 year anniversary mark! For finding a tai chi class you can look on Paul Lam's site (click this) Last night darling husband and I we went to dinner last night at a restaurant we had never been to, only 6 miles away. I had goat pie and Roy, octopus cassoulet. Needless to say, we were delighted with deliciousness and will return. Half the partons were locals, who walk down with their dogs, so we were dining with more than 10 dogs as well.

    BBx2 today.

Nat: Fantastic! Wow, your workplace sounds like so much fun! Your team is so creative from the costumes to the wall/ceiling/ floor decorations to the food. You know I LOVE your theme choice! Something like this needs a team that works together and your team definitely does. What a great and fun way for a workplace to build and maintain teamwork. Plus adding in a trophy and bragging rights adds so much to the friendly competition. You and dh look just precious! Your Alice IS perfect.

Congratulations Ginger on your 5 years!!!

Karen: Exciting times for your dd.

    Ruth: Great picture! Brrrrr

No formal exercise again today. I had to take one of my cats to the vet. She was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism - we are glad to know what is wrong with her because she was getting thinner and thinner. Now she has to take a pill 2x/day every day. Hope it starts to relief her symptoms soon.
