Good for you!!
-
I finally made it to this exercise thread after being inspired by Patoo.
Patoo - Hope you feel better soon. You were right. This thread is very motivating!
MexicoHeather - It certainly has been cold here. Is that a park? I love how they decorated it. That must have been a very nice walk.
Snickersmom - You go, girl! I remember how difficult it was for me to vacuum the entire house during chemo. I didn't realize how much work it really is. I could only do sections at a time.
I've been using my elliptical machine almost everyday. I didn't last night. I'm on level 2 at the moment. LOL, don't laugh. It seems like I could only do level 1 for a very long time. I'm up to 30 minutes. I'm going to try to get 45 minutes in tonight.
-
TampaBayBucsGirl - that's great! In this "cold" weather, I sure wish I had a treadmill or elliptical at home. Oh wait a minute - we have Silver Sneakers so I could go to the gym for free anytime!!! But gee, I have to drive to get there.........I will take a nice walk again today, I think. It's just easier than driving to the gym plus I love being out and enjoying this awesome world!!!
Hope you all have a great day and thanks everyone for motivating me to do something about this misshapen body!!!
-
Welcome Tampa. Patoo is a good recruiter!
Speaking of Florida, DS and his roommate just flew out this morning for a week's vacation there; this leaves DH and me babysitting two dogs, two cats and a bowl of fish. I am going to do a toning DVD this morning, walk the dogs this afternoon & my Book Club meets tonight......more dessert eating......
-
Ohhh, love the photos! Falconer, what a cutie pie and love that snowman!! Adding, yes, to SPS via Tessu, who has access to excellent progressive group fitness classes. A Kinesis class is right on the cutting edge of what is happening in fitness at this very moment in time. TampaBay welcome! DawnP64, so cool to read of your cancer fit class and that you enjoyed it - great! MexicoHeather, terrific photo, you too Ruth, love having a peek at the WWW Christmas party!
Taught a special Pilates class to a year 10 students, for one of my Sunday class members who is head of the PE dept. at high school - they did pretty good! Off to BodyBalance early evening.
-
Snickersmom - I'd love to have Silver Sneakers. I'm just not quite there yet, but would love to take advantage of the free gym time. That's awesome! I don't really have anyone to walk with over here. My neighbors walk early in the morning (when I'm off to work). I love the outdoors too, but this allows me to watch the Hallmark & Lifetime channel Christmas movies while I'm exercising.
Ruthbru - Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm sure your DS is having a good time. It's probably a lot warmer here than in North Dakota. Hope I didn't complain too much about our winter cold snap.
LilacBlue - Thank you! I read that you're living in England. We were stationed at RAF Woodbridge (near Ipswich) for about 4 years. I'm missing it already after reading about your meetings at different castles. The wives in our group used to meet at Seckford Hall. That was a long time ago. I'm sure things have changed. Nevertheless, I still miss Suffolk County. Would love to go back there one day.
Well, I'm off to do my exercising. Hopefully I can get to that goal of 45 minutes tonight.
-
Went to a 75 minute power yoga class at lunchtime (still can't do side plank for much at 3 months post op...but getting better with other power poses) and will definitely get my 10,000 steps today as my office holiday party will be held tonight at a brew pub located just about a mile from our home...our best designated driver is our feet! TT
-
Welcomm TBBGirl, glad you found your way over. I have tried the elliptical a few times and gave up since I could never get pass the 5 min mark so you are doing great!
Snickersmom, I joined the gym, actually 2 gyms, under SilverSneakers. Went once to each but have not gotten back. There's so many activities to do here that exercising inside on machines just can't compare. I think about it but that's about as far as it goes. If I had the energy I'd get up off my butt now and head over to one but, nope, errands today was a lot of movement. Maybe pop a DVD in later.
ruthbru, I need to recruit in order to get me back here and accountable. Have 10 lbs to drop and Christmas parties not helping with that.
Night sculpted friends.
-
Took a walk today! Yippee! But then it was cut short because I had to stop to talk to some neighbors and came home from there. I'll go again tomorrow. I am determined to keep on trucking, especially with the holidays coming up. My daughter makes the most awesome Christmas cookies and of course, I do have to test them!!
Has anyone been on Boniva? My MO has just switched me because the Fosomax doesn't agree with me. I guess taking a pill once a month is better than once a week but I was hoping for Prolia. Maybe if I don't like the Boniva he will switch me to that.
Have a good evening, everyone!! I'm charging my Fitbit so I have no excuses tomorrow!
-
hi all and welcome TampaBayBucsGirl. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Bucs. My grandfather retired to St. Pete and became a huge fan. He and mom had an ongoing wager whenever Tampa Bay played the NY Giants. She still keeps a note, in his hand, that accompanied a rueful $1 remittance. It's a family treasure that makes me smile every time I think about it.
Saw the endocrinologist today. We figured out that my TSH levels have been rising since I started taking the calcium per onc when I went off tamox and started taking an AI. The anastrozole wasn't the culprit, it was the calcium I was taking along with it. Fortunately, my hormone levels have stabilized so I'll stay on current dose of synthroid and we'll re-check in three months.
I'm still resisting taking a "bone-building" drug but we had a good talk about it. My DEXA results are not atypical for a woman at my stage of life, so there's no evidence the AI is doing something unusual. Discussed the info from 2017 SABCS about seven years endocrine therapy (anti-hormonal tx) being just as good as ten. I'll get another DEXA in a few months. If there's more bone loss despite increased weight-bearing exercise, I'd rather go off the AI than take another pill.
Dropped off the car at mechanic and walked home in the afternoon sun. It was cold but I was bundled up and took the long way home. Felt good to loosen up my thigh muscles after last night's kettlebell squats. It was dark and not so pleasant when I went to fetch my car so walked straight there. 2.5 miles RT and calling that my exercise for the day.
-
Tampagirl, I won't laugh. I've been doing 10 min elliptical day for 2 months!
-
Hi Everybody and a big Hello to all the new wonderful ladies!
Badger: Glad you found out the reason your TSH levels have been rising.
Just a quick note. Today was more walking around while exploring Colonial Williamsburg. It's been a fantastic week! Tomorrow will be sitting in a car on the way home.
-
badger, I wonder if it was the time of day you take the calcium. My endocrinologist advised me to not take any calcium, including milk in my tea, for at least 4 hrs after I take my synthroid.
-
Hi everyone, I'm new here.
I'm 2 days post lumpectomy. Walked 1 km today and did some stretches for my lower back, plus the arm exercises prescribed. -
Welcome, Moth!!
-
Welcome to the newbies and love the photos! Wonderland, I can even see the executioner in the shadows up front.
Badger, I preferred to switch to Tamoxifen rather than continue with AIs another eternity. (For postmenopausal women Tamoxifen can help strengthen bones.) I was glad to get off the Zometa (another bone drug) and finally say goodbye to the infusion room.
Patoo, Tampa and Snickers, you are lucky to have so much sun. I can't take my bike out when wet snow turns to ice. Yikes! It took an hour to get home last night after a school concert with all the bus and tram delays. It would have taken me 10 minutes with my bike, but maybe with some broken bones.
Christmas parties have been a special challenge this year for me. I won a whole chiffon cake at one party and have to try to burn that off as well as other treats from another party. At least I danced away some of the calories on Wednesday. Yesterday ran 3K and did weights. My gym got rid of the Kinesis machines which I had used regularly and provided kettlebells, sandbags and TRX suspension trainers instead. I now use these regularly, but I do miss those Kinesis machines.
-
welcome moth!
2FUN, you are right. The endocrinologist was the first person to tell me that calcium interferes with synthroid. Except for the osteo biflex, which I take after supper and sometimes forget, I take all my pills first thing in the morning with my coffee. My family doc and onc both knew this but said nothing. Oh well, they all can't be experts in everything. I asked if I should change my routine and she said it's OK not to, now that my levels have stabilized, if taking all the pills at once helped me remember to take them. It would be six of one/half-dozen of another to take the calcium in the morning and have a higher dose of synthroid, or take the calcium later in the day and have a lower dose of synthroid. We'll make that decision in a few months but for now I'm happy to have the mystery solved.
-
Just popping by to wave hi to everyone. X-ray this morning for the last check on bone placement. Hopefully still aligned. The doc said no surgery after 3 weeks, so if all looks good, it’ll be just the cast for 3 more weeks. Going stir crazy. Maybe if the bones are in place he will let me walk. Have a great day everyone
-
I got up to 35 minutes last night at level 2. You all inspired me. It was just 5 minutes more but I feel great for doing it.
Patoo - It was hard for me in the very beginning too. Watching TV while I'm using the elliptical helps me to keep my mind off of it. Besides, I'd be walking outdoors more often if I lived in your area.
2Fun - You'll get there. The time will increase as you get stronger.
Badger - I still have Giants fans in the family. We have a little rivalry going on as well. My parents grew up in the Bronx, but then moved to Miami before I was born. I was a Dolphins fan during the Shula era. Then, I became a Bucs fan after meeting my husband at USF. The rest is history.
Wonderland - I love Colonial Williamsburg! Have you been to Busch Gardens? I really liked that park in Williamsburg better than the one in Tampa. It has a European theme. It's also a very nice walk to all the different countries.
Moth - That's awesome! I was a couch potato after my lumpectomy. LOL! You're doing good.
Heidihill - Yes, I do like our winters. I just wish we would get some snow every now & then. It doesn't seem Christmasy without it. You know? I'd just want the kind of snow that blankets the ground and trees, but then melts the next day. Yeah, I've been there and done that whole blizzard and ice storm thing. I didn't like them too much.
Oh, and I have a question too. What devices do you wear to count your steps? I saw that Snickersmom uses a Fitbit. What kinds do you all recommend? I'm thinking about getting one.
-
I have a Fitbit also and like it a lot.
CVD, glad you healing without having to have surgery. Don't do anything to tempt fate (as frustrating as that is!).
I am subbing today, after which I will walk the grand-puppies (it was too icy to walk outside yesterday so I just ran up and down the stairs with them). I plan to go to Zumba tonight.
Have a great Friday, everyone!
-
I have a fitbit and really like it as well...I just have the original basic version (no watch), but it works for me...keeps me aware of how much/little I am doing.
-
Just popped on here to catch up reading, and realized I've been counting Christmas errands/chores as exercise - so I stopped reading and went to do classical stretch, and now I'm reading again before chores! Thanks to everyone here who holds me accountable.
A bit of snow yesterday, very cold this morning, and more snow tonight. It sure does look pretty.
-
Ok, I'm going to look for a Fitbit today. Thanks everyone!
-
Tampabaybucs - Check out Amazon, I got mine there because we have Amazon Prime and it was a little cheaper. I think most of the stores carry Fitbits now. Good luck with your search! Mine is actually sitting on the counter in the kitchen, all charged up and ready to go. Guess I need to put it on my wrist and take
-
Wal-Mart has fitbits too
-
Yes, and they might be cheaper there because of the holidays
-
Hi all, and welcome to the new members....knee replacement PT continues, but for the next week or so it will be mostly walking: I am up in Reno, NV where hubby and I just bought a condo that will eventually be our retirement home. Signed the final papers yesterday, and then went to dinner to celebrate. Escrow closes Monday. Yay! In the meantime, I will be doing a lot of walking around malls and stores as we buy some things for the new place (it didn't come with fridge, so getting that and a new bed, then have the fun of decided what other furniture we buy and what we bring from the old place, which we will eventually sell, but not until hubby retires in a year or two...). My sister (who lives in a small town east of here but will be moving to Reno to retire as well) and my son (just visiting from the East Coast) are coming to town tonight and we have a Hanukkah party to attend tonight. Latkes! More reason to walk off some weight!
I asked my PT what I should be doing while on the break from PT sessions; they told me mostly stretches and walking, as my range of motion is almost perfect already! (yay). The biggest issue I am having is with the knee that wasn't operated on, as it also needs to be replaced, so I am l also working on strengthening it.
That's the news from here! Keep walking and working out!
Octogirl

I really don't have much exercise to report- just checking in on everyone. Work is crazy busy and then add Christmas. At this point I'm just trying to maintain some decent eating habits and not gain weight. Holding well so far.
Octo – congrats on your new retirement home. I've been thinking about where I would like to retire but no decision. Tropical island would be first choice but probably can't afford that. Lately I've been thinking west so I'm curious what made you decide on Reno?
2Fun, hang in there. There are so many factor affecting fatigue. My plastic surgeon even said being under anesthesia for several hours can affect you up to a year – and he was right, it did. When I got done with chemo, I could not walk up a flight of stairs without stopping and I could not do the 12 minute walk around the block. But I kept trying and little by little you get there.
Pat, that warms my heart that your DIL is motivated to become an oncology doctor. We need her! Also saw the two extra years on hormone therapy is as good as 10 total. Like to hear that! There was another study that showed if at 5 years your circulating tumor cells are very low, there is small chance of recurrence. So lots of good info coming out of San Antonio.
Runnermum, hugs to you and hope that helping others will raise your spirits. Don't be afraid to low-key Christmas, and as you pointed out, focus on the real reason for the season. I do way less gifting, cards, baking etc than I used to because it was stress for me – not fun.
Wonderland, you must have been a bad girl! Cute photo.
Falconer, there's a reminder that snow is good for the snowmen and kids! Very cute.
Welcome to all the newbies and thanks for bringing Patoo back! Hi, Patoo!
TampaBay – I am cheap and I just use a smartphone app – Argus- to track my exercise. It will track steps if you carry it around – or you can turn on and track when you exercise. I discovered I do not get enough steps during the day at work, so I decided to just track my exercise- walks, yoga, biking etc and make sure it adds up to at least 150 minutes – well not this week but I try.
Badgermom are you saying calcium causes thyroid problems, or only affects the synthroid? I read one time that the calcium is not preventing osteoporosis in those on hormone therapy. I haven't really told my onc that I don't bother to take it because of that. She also asked me last appointment if I wanted to do prolia even though I don't have osteoporosis. It supposedly helps prevent bone mets. I'm undecided so I think I'm saying no to that at the moment. Hoping to just stay healthy without more meds.
-
I did 2 walks yesterday - my 1km in the morning and a 0.8 km in the evening plus my stretches.... and a shower! Yay for first showers after surgery! I didn't even need a nap yesterday so I'm pretty happy.
I hope to do a longer walk this morning. I do need to map out new dog walking routes in my neighbourhood as my old long route goes by a cemetery and now I really don't want to be anywhere near that...
-
TH, calcium affects synthroid.
I had an overactive thyroid that was nuked with radioactive iodine 25+ years ago. Been on synthroid ever since. Dosage had been fairly consistent until I started taking calcium when I went on anastrozole. (Take one pill to counteract a second pill and it affects a third pill. Sheesh! Another reason not to take a fourth pill.)
I love younger medical professionals. They are fresh and bright, and intellectually curious. I mentioned to the endocrinologist the theory that taking a "bone builder" might help prevent bone mets. She had not heard that and was intrigued enough to say she'd look into it. I'll let you know what she says.
Sunny today so will walk in a while. Gym later. Hope everyone has a good weekend!
