2FUN, I once read that however long you were in 'active treatment', it takes that long again to get back to 'normal'; I would say to double that amount of time. I really pushed myself to keep active during and after treatment, but I would say it took me about a year to even start to feel like I was moving forward (physically and emotionally) and two years before I really, really felt great. Keep at it, even when you don't feel like it, and know that it is going to take time.
Yea, for the good checkup, Heidi!
Pat, nice to have someone on the inside to advice you, and VERY nice if you can be done with the anti-hormonals! I did well on Arimidex so was surprised how much better I felt once I was done with them.
Those with snow in the forecast, I feel your pain. Shovel and Sculpt time.
I subbed today, just got with Zumba (which I probably negated by eating a cupcake......some middle school girls were having a get-together at the fitness center, when I stopped by after class to say hi, they gave me one).
I am now off to a basketball game!

Hi ladies!
Great job to all! You are all very motivating!
Not such a great week for getting my workouts done. Did manage to hop on treadmill and get a nice 40 min run in today after work. Plan to get a couple more workout a in this weekend so the week is not a total loss. Feeling a bit blah and lazy this week and haven't had much of the Christmas spirit. We lost our sister in law to pancreatic cancer in Oct. It's our first Christmas without her and I think for the first time in months I have actually started to think of what not only myself and my family have went thru this past year but also everything that has happened with my sister in law. She was diagnosed a year ago this week. Everything happened so fast. I am feeling a little overwhelmed and it's hard to get the Christmas spirit. Some friends and I helped deliver gifts to families in our area who are in need a little help this season last night. Helped bring me out of my funk a little last night. With this same group of ladies, we also adopt a family from the area women's shelter each Christmas and buy gifts for the family so next week we will get together and bring those gifts to the shelter. And myself, husband and kids will be ringing the bell for the salvation army next week too. Hoping these little acts of kindness will continue to remind me of the reason for the season and help get me in the Christmas spirit a little more.
I start radiation on Monday. Scheduled for 6 1/2 weeks..28 treatments +5 boosts. Really ready to get this part done and over...seems so stinking long.

still in New Orleans
another day of 15k steps and over 100 minuets of activity
I still feel like I have gained 5 lbs
Today is my 3 month Post op—happy to not have another surgery on the calendar

Am sore all over from even the easy exercise classes I’m done this week. Hoping that’s a sign of muscle cells waking up again
Did too much sitting today, but wanted to finish the stitching on a counted cross stitch project, so it was worth it (still have to decide what to make out of it, but the embroidery part is done - yay!). Hoping the 40min on the exercise bike compensates for some of it; certainly made me feel better
ruthbru thank you for the reminder that the body takes quite awhile to recover fully after active treatment. I’m only one year past the end of Herceptin and will try to remember that whenever I start to feel like I’ll never get back in shape again
-
runner, I'm sorry for your loss. Yes, it is a lot. I think your idea of reaching out will help you find a glimmer of the season's spirit.
Ruth, thanks for the reality check. I figured it took me a year and four surgeries to removed multiple body parts, and relate one, so I was going to give myself a year. I like your idea of doubling it!
We had so.many people help us this last year. Friends out of the blue dropped off food. Notes. Helped me shower etc. We decided to have a big thank you party. Even tho it going to.be a bit of work, I am getting excited. We rented a lodges at a forest preserve park. The lodge is next to.a killer sledding hill, and there are cross country ski /snow shoe trails. Ill have card games, board games etc We're going to have BBQ catered in.from local restaurant, and I'll do chili. Kids are inviting their friends that supported them. It could be a big pain to set up (I don't know how much electric al stuff I ca nbring....it's a rustic cabin) but I'm excited to see the RSVP roll in.
It's good to have something to look forward to. That increased energy makes me more enthused about eating well and exercise.

2FUN, what a great idea! I threw a PFC (post final chemo) mocktail party at work, with hors d'oeuvres and non-alcoholic drinks. They were a great bunch to be bald around LOL.
Pat, congrats on bittersweet farewell visit with breast surgeon and thanks for the info on years of endocrine therapy. I've been on anti-hormonals for eight years now - five on tamox and three on anastrozole. Onc wants me on a bisphosphonate and I'm resisting. I see him in a couple months then he'll order another DEXA scan. If it shows further bone loss, I'd rather skip the last two years of the AI than take more meds.
I'm seeing an endocrinologist next week. My primary care doc referred me due to increasing levels of TSH and doses of synthroid. It's timely to remember that anti-hormonals are endocrine therapy so I'll have some pointed questions for her.
We got some snow overnight so it's pretty this morning. Gym later. Happy Saturday everyone!

2FUN, that party sounds great! I love the idea!
Pat, I totally get the bittersweet farewell to BS. I loved my BS; she was truly awesome. I still get a bit sad and happy at the same time when I remember our last appointment: I asked her when I would see her again and her reply was 'Unless we happen to run into each other at the baseball game (She and I are both avid SF Giants fans), I hope never!'. Ok, then....
PT yesterday went a bit better: they did some poking around and determined that it was actually a tendon that caused the issues the other day, not the hamstring itself. It felt a bit better but they modified the exercises to avoid straining it further: full recovery from tendonitis can take a while, though ironically too much extended sitting can make it worse. They also did some laser therapy and electrical stimulation, which seemed to help even though I tend to be a skeptic about stuff like that, and taught me some stretching exercises that should help. Meanwhile, they are working on range of motion stuff and strengthening my left leg and knee (the replacement was of the right knee) to get it ready for an upcoming trip and for surgery. Did I mention that both knees were equally bad (ortho surgeon had told me."You decide which one you want to replace first, because they both need to go yesterday"), and that surgery to replace the left knee is scheduled for mid-February? Given the tendon issues and how much I love the PT, I am going to ask surgeon if he can prescribe PT to continue right up until (and of course after) the second surgery...
Today in between elevating my leg and stretches, I have housework to do. Weather here is cool but sunny and beautiful (too beautiful, once again California really needs rain!) so will also take a walk later.
Hope all have a good weekend!

Runner, so sorry about your SIL. First holidays are especially hard after a loss. Two people I know just died in the last two days. One had been a wonderful high school social worker before she retired and died of the same lung disease that killed my mom & the other was a 42 year old man. He had been diagnosed with MD as a teenager and was wheelchair bound by the end of high school, was in a local nursing home for awhile as a young adult as he needed help with all his personal care & eventually a breathing tube, but he was a computer wiz and did research on the states which offered the most help to people with disabilities, moved to one of them, hired a full time caretaker, lived independently, became a freelance writer and and advocate for others with disabilities. He outlived his prognosis by several decades and was a true inspiration of how to REALLY live, even with significant challenges.

Now, on a lighter note.....I went to wake up yoga & am now getting ready to watch the North Dakota State University's football team play in their next playoff game. Runner, are you going to it? I will probably end up going to some college basketball games here this afternoon.
And......here is a thought we can all relate to as we enjoy the holiday festivities

Hi All,
I'd like to join your thread as I work toward rebuilding my strength & stamina. I completed 4 rounds of TC on 8/31 & 35 (28 + 7 boosts) radiation treatments on 11/20. I've been a home exerciser for many years. During chemo & radiation, my exercise was primarily treadmill & gentle yoga. The last couple of weeks I've done some kickboxing & weight workouts and feel like I'm ready to start working back toward the types of workouts I did before BC. I'm modifying by shortening the workouts & using lighter weights, but it's helping me to feel like I'm getting back to normal Cathe Freidrich's workouts have been my go-to since about 2010, so I'm going to loosely follow her ICE Level one rotation. Most of her workouts are advanced, but she made the ICE (Intermediate Conditioning Extreme, I think) a few years ago. I like the workouts a lot & I think it's a good re-starting point for me.
I look forward to hearing what others are doing as we move forward on this journey.
-
Welcome DawnP64! I'd never heard of Cathe Freidrich of so went and looked at her website - good stuff! The modifications you mentioned are perfect and reads that it's all going in the right direction. Runner, so sad about SIL and your giving i inspiring. Gentle hugs to you and hope more lifting of spirits for you and family through this holiday season.
BodyBalance this morning and a run through new release #79 this afternoon at the gym. Was fiddling with thermostat in the studio to get it warmer as the room was super chilly and somehow changed the language from English to German (didn't have reading glasses on!) -what a palaver. We have snow on the way too.

Welcome Dawn!!!
Ruth - LOL!!! And - it is true!!!
Octogirl - Your PT sounds great!! That's awesome! Sorry about your knees...though. I'm in the bad knee club - also. Bad knees for over 20 years: Osteoarthritis. I still workout like a crazy woman...just have to watch out for my knees....
As for me...just had a killer workout in Body Combat!!! It was soooo hard but felt good.
The instructor tells us to just do the best we can - but to keep moving - which I like because she doesn't shame anyone if they're not able to do all it - at her level!! Unlike that other class that I tried...
Hope everyone's having a great weekend!!
-
Thank you everyone.
Ruth I am so sorry. Such a hard time of the year. What you said about living is so true. We did go to the NDSU game...great game! Excited for next week. We usually go to Frisco but were unable to get tickets for this year in August. Hopefully Santa comes thru if they make it, I have 4 boys that are so excited!
Welcome Dawn...have heard of Cathe Freidrich workouts. Heard they are good!
2Fun...love the party idea! I want to do something this spring. We have had so many friends do some very wonderful things for us thru all of this.
Happy Saturday! Off to do some baking!

Hi everyone,
- I was at a Tampa BC gathering today and rode with Patoo, who lives near me. She told me about this group and I am very interested in joining. I need to lose some Arimidex weight (ha ha ha) and hoping you will all motivate me to do more than getting up and walking to the kitchen for breakfast! I love to walk but haven't gotten into a definite regimen, which is what I need to do. I haven't gained weight - it just all shifted to my stomach, thighs, and bum. I have turned into my mom!!!
- Patoo told me about your once-a-year trip, and I want to go!!!
-
Hi all and welcome Dawn & Snickersmom! Just up from a much-needed nap now off to the gym.
-
LB: Great article about a wonderful woman! That hat!!!
KB: Congrates on your erg challenge so far. I think I told you that my cousins are the designers of the Concept 2. They are so down to earth and wonderful people!
Heidi: Yea on your health! I carry New Year resolutions over from one year to the next. May 2018 be your year for a 10K.
Pat: Maybe your dil will find The Cure. That would be outstanding!
Runner: Sorry about your dear sil. It's so hard and the emotional pain seems to amplify over a holiday. Plus you are getting ready to start a new treatment and I'm sure you wondering about things like what side effects will I have, will I burn, will I have energy, can I deal with the holidays, etc. HUGS and thinking of you and your family.
2FUN: Your party sounds like so MUCH fun!!! How exciting!
Badger: Let us know how your doctor appointment goes next week.
Octo: Glad your PT went better for you.
Dawn: Welcome! Glad you have joined us.
Ruth: Sorry about the 2 people you knew. It was inspiring to read about the gentleman.
Snickersmom: Welcome! Patoo and all of us will help motivate you to walk regularly.
We drove up to Williamsburg, VA yesterday before the weather was too bad. Today we are staying at the resort bc it's been snowy, rainy, sleety. Tomorrow the sun comes out and the exploring begins. Went to the exercise center and walked/ran on the treadmill. So different from doing it outside.
-
Hi MOmmyof2,
Just a quick post - we are originally from Manchester and Putnam, CT. Lived in Manchester for 26 years, moved to Wilmington, NC, then back to Putnam for 7 years. Now have been in Florida for about 6 years. Where in CT are you?

Thank you All! I'm looking forward to sharing and staying accountable with my fitness. One of my oncologists told me that exercise is the one thing they know is effective at reducing the chance of recurrence & another (and my BC navigator) told me it's critical to overcoming the fatigue from treatment. So I have more reason than ever before to keep up with it! Sharing it with people who are dealing with the same treatments, concerns, and challenges that a diagnosis brings will be especially valuable!
Today's workout was Cathe's ICE Chiseled Upper Body.
-
70 mins @ gym - 30 TM, 30 weights, 10 yoga stretch.
Cheryl, hope all is well in your neck of the woods!
-
last day in New Orleans
Walking all over
Today 14.5K and 118 minuets of activity
-
Welcome to the new ladies!
Octogirl, cold laser can be really helpful. It hasn't made a big presence in therapy clinics b/c the unit costs a lot, and many insurance carriers will not cover it.
-
Welcome, Dawn and Snickersmom!
-
2FUN, thanks for the laser info. The cold laser did seem to help. I appreciate hearing that it is an expensive unit, because it just increases//confirms my confidence that my PT clinic is well equipped and well run, despite being located in a small semi-rural town that is notorious for being medically under served in general...
Yesterday I walked around the neighborhood and cleaned my kitchen! We are off to a holiday party this evening with old friends who live about a two hour drive away, so planning to spend the night. First I will do some stretches.
Adding to the welcome for the new ladies!
Octogirl

scrubbed the kitchen floor yesterday. First real scrub since last jan !! Friends wanted to do it, but we just did a quick wipe every once in awhile!lol. Going to holiday lunch with DH's cousins. It's usually a bit trying, they are a bit racist and every other -ist. I told DH to buy cookies that I do not like. I hope that keeps my fingers out of the desert!
Octo, do what you can to strengthen your soon to be surgical side. Research shows significantly better results when strengthening b4 surgery.
-
Hah!, 2FUN: if I had to put up with -ist cousins at a meal I'd bring my very favorite cookies...so I could keep eating them to avoid arguments! I guess that isn't a good long term solution though...
-
Ruth, sorry for your losses.
Octo, hope the drive isn't too much for your recovery.
Sounds like so many of you are keeping active this holiday season.
Welcome, new folks to this wonderfully supportive thread. I am also heeding Ruth's advice to give it time. It's been only 6 months since my second surgery.
Yesterday I went to my usual yoga class in the morning- before the snowstorm. I was so achy and pretty miserable all class. Wondering if the arthritic changes I'm experiencing were exacerbated by the weather? Today I walked a 5k loop around the block. Felt better overall. I'm almost out of letrozole; the plan is to switch to Tamoxifen after the new year. My MO seems to think we don't have to go w such an aggressive treatment. So, hope the Tam will be kinder to my body! Yesterday I struggled to get off the floor, as every joint ached. Bleh! -
60 mins @ gym this afternoon, all treadmill ==> 460 cal burned.
-
Hi Ladies,
I have some sort of chest congestion, so dragging, coughing, and sneezing. At the moment, I have hair color on my head, and need to watch a spot of cinéma vérité, or better known as webinars. Training on writing a "case for support" which is one of the things I will be doing later this week. My business partner just got hired at a prestigious firm as an interim replace for a lady going out on Work & Family leave, so I am expecting things will be really hopping in Q1.
As I've been dragging, only walks this weekend EXCEPT for putting up the Christmas tree solo. I now understand why people get married!! I also carried it from the top of my car up to my apartment. I am counting that as upper body training for yesterday. But the result is well worth the effort. - Claire
-
Very pretty, Claire. Now drink some chicken noodle soup and lie low!
I didn't feel like going out to exercise, or doing any of my DVDs, or walking on the dreadmill; so I did some toning workouts from utube & did a little dancing with Marshall Fitness, also on utube, instead.
-
Pretty tree Claire! Hope you start to feel better soon.
Walked over 11,000 steps today in Colonial Williamsburg. More tomorrow.
