Good morning, everyone! Is anyone taking part in the Black Friday madness? I’ve never really gotten into it. Most of my adult life, I’ve had to work the day after and times when my employer at the time gave the day after as a day off, my daughter who dances had to march in our Santa parade, which means I had to march along too. This year, I took a vacation day this year because it’s been a crazy year and a particularly crazy last 6 months. I need a break. Hubby is working today, college daughter is home, but so are her friends so she’s been gone a lot including today, and my high school daughter is babysitting my niece while her parents are at work. What? The house to myself? There’s will be a run, lots of decluttering and cleaning, some decorating, and whatever I want on the tv, lol. Hubby and I have to go to a visitation for the father of a friend tonight and one for our young neighbor tonight when he gets home. So somber and sobering end to the day.

I’ve been able to get in 4 runs per week and cross training at least 2 of the other 3 days. I’m still nervous about doing the strength training unguided, so I’ve just been doing very light weights for the arms, but not as regularly as I’d like. Body weight leg exercises are more regular and going well. I see my PS on 12/20 and will try again to pin him down on specifics about anything involving the abdomen and what I can do. On the plus side, I have lost 12 of the 20 I originally wanted to lose. When I get the full 20 gone, I’ll reassess. Fingers crossed tamox doesn’t slow it down the longer I take it.

Ruth, have fun at the masters class and putting up the decorations.

Twohobbies, sounds like a great Thanksgiving. And the family walk by the lake sounds lovely.

Badger, Your post makes me want to get some soup going. Except it’s going to be in the 60’s here for the next few days and that’s not soup weather.

Claire, I hope you and your friend had a great dinner. Quail sounds delicious.

Hbcheryl, body combat class is a great way to make the Thanksgiving feast guilt-free.

Tessu, glad your toe is on the mend and you can get back to exercise. Yes, the realiazation of how quickly you lose the progress you have built up is a downer, but you are so right in that you getit back.

2fun, I hope you had a wonderful time with your family!

Scared, today is the day I had my annual mammo that started all this again for me. My daughter came with me and this morning I got a huge hug from her because she remembers. I’m struggling now with all the anniversary-ness this time of year now means. I’m trying to be thankful but it’s hard. I know from the last time (I was diagnosed shortly after my birthday) that it will get easier.

I am so thankful for this motivating place to post. Being in the company of likeminded people who are positive and uplifting is a blessing when things don’t seem so positive. Thank you all for everything!

Wow, cdv, you are doing great! Nice 12 lbs loss and you are smart to take it low on hand weights and work up over time. TwoHobbies you inspire me to keep at it. Reads that everyone had a terrific Thanksgiving.

Early yesterday evening, before class started after asking if anyone had any injuries, issues or pregnancies to inform me of, wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and told them of the famous Thanksgiving dish - candied yams with marshmallows. The looks of horror as I explained this traditional American recipe, LOL; definitely an acquired taste. Baked a pumpkin pie and cooked turkey for DH & myself and called fellow American DS at uni and not sure if he knew it was Thanksgiving. Have a terrific start to the weekend everyone!

    Pilates mid-day.

Lilac: That's hilarious about the reactions to candied yams and marshmallows! Did you mention that many times the marshmallows burn? Dh fixed the yams this year for our gathering but he didn't add marshmallows.

cdv: Congratulations on the weight loss!

We had a fabulous Thanksgiving with my family. No one remembers how it started but for over 35 years my family has been having a Thanksgiving pie contest. Everyone has to bake a pie. You can just imagine the types of pies (good and really terrible) we have had throughout the years. This year there were 13 pies and we have to taste all of them. I baked a carrot pie and I was pleased how good it tasted.

Walked/ran on this gorgeous afternoon. Came home and raked and hauled leaves for over 1 hour.

Well my Thanksgiving didn't go as planned, I took my houseguest with me to my friends but she wasn't feeling well so I brought her home (after I ate of course) but I missed out on the turkey races, playing 31 and this years craft which was candy houses but I did go back today for the day 2 celebration in which all yesterday's leftovers come out plus all the fixing for sandwiches and not a bite of turkey has passed my lips because they also serve prime rib and lamb

Managed to get the house decorated for Christmas early this morning and then went to a Zumba class before lunch.

We do a Thanksgiving breakfast to make it easier for the kids to deal with in-laws and later we made a Turkey. Today I went to the gym and did an hour of weights and an hour of cardio. Then off to do some work I didn't get done before Thanksgiving. Avoided all the stores. Not a fan of black Friday. I work near major shopping areas and there didn't seem to be much parking. I switched my class from a Battle and Burn to a biking, rowing and weights. My good arm has been achy. I really like Battle and Burn but its Boxing and I don't think that is a good idea. Needs a little more rest.

I also avoid the black Friday crowds. Not a fan of shopping in the first place so that's just crazy-making. I have a friend who plans her strategy weeks ahead, enlists her family, and deploys her resources to snag the best bargains (she's gotten some doozies over the years). She finds it exhilarating but to me it reads exhaustion. I'll spend here today for Small Business Saturday. The out-of-town relatives get boxes with cheese & sausage, locally-produced candy, and herbal teas from Four Elements. The in-town relatives get plates of home-made cookies. Mom gets a B&N gift card and a ride to the bookstore.

Wonderland, wow 13 pies! I'm a bit jealous as love pie. LOL at candied yams with marshmallows. LB, I'm with your family, it does not sound tasty and what a thing to do to a tuber.

Record warmth yesterday so did get out for a walk on break but meanwhile got a lot done as few people were working. Not as nice today but amazing for the end of Nov. Will hit the gym sometime today.

I dug up this old recipe for a vegan friend and thought I'd share with my exercise buddies.

    Baked Stuffed Squash

    3 acorn or other squash

    ½ tsp sea salt

    3 Tbsp oil

    1½ cup minced onion

    1 cup sunflower seeds

¼ tsp each sage, thyme, and marjoram

    2 Tbsp soy sauce

    ½ cup water

3 cups cooked rice OR 5 cups soft bread crumbs

Preheat oven to 350F. Cut squashes in half lengthwise, scoop out seeds* and stringy portion. Brush insides with a bit of oil, sprinkle with ¼ tsp salt, then place in a baking dish with ¼ inch water in the bottom. Set in oven to bake and prepare stuffing as follows: Place a large frying pan on medium heat and add 3 Tbsp oil. When oil is hot, add onion and stir for a few minutes until translucent. Add sunflower seeds and stir a minute more. Add ¼ tsp salt plus herbs and soy sauce, stir again, and add ½ cup water. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally until liquid is almost gone. Add rice or bread crumbs and stir a few minutes more, mixing together well. When squashes have baked for 45 minutes-1 hour and are almost tender, fill each with stuffing and bake 10-15 minutes more. Serves four to six.

*Toasted squash or pumpkin seeds. Separate seeds from stringy portions and set out to dry for 1-2 days. Toast by stirring constantly for a few minutes in a lightly-oiled pan on medium-low. Add sea salt or soy sauce to taste. A tasty snack!

Hi ladies! A wonderful and busy past few days! Too much eating but lots of time with family and a few Dr appts thrown in.

Had my port taken out on Wed! Feels like another step forward for me. Yesterday I decided to try a run outside, have been sticking to treadmill since completing chemo. I ran the entire 4 miles on my route with no walk breaks! Felt great and was so proud when done. Think today will be some yoga, strength & circuit and will run again tomorrow!

Ruth...tonight we are headed to our best friends house for a family & friends BUNCO night. Our 4th annual. The reason I am sharing with you is their daughters have gone to college in your town the last 6 years (oldest graduated last Dec). For the last 4 Thanksgivings the youngest has brought home a group of friends from school that are unable to go home for the holiday. A few are the guys from England that come to play soccer. It is such a blast and has been fun getting to know those kids. They will all graduate this year so this could be the last year we do this. I didn't realize your small private college has so many from over seas that come play soccer.

Runnermum, congrats on port removal and successful run! What a nice thing to do for those college kids. Did you serve them candied yams?

Hi Runner, yes, our little college has very good academic and sports programs both & does recruit kids from all over the world. Enjoy the English Soccer/Bunco players tonight!

Zumba was very fun yesterday. You, who are dancers, would have loved it. The teachers alternated doing their favorite songs & led three songs together. I ended up outside also. The temperature was 20 degrees above average......which translates into wearing a heavy sweatshirt and lined wind pants for taking a walk). My two-dog friend called to see if I wanted to borrow the grand-puppies for a doggie walk.....which I did (I rarely turn down a walk, even when it's not on a beach!). In between all that, I got most of the Christmas decorating done & hope to finish it off later today.

I love squash; but I like to just bake it, mash it up with a fork, and eat it with nothing except maybe a little butter & pepper.

I am going to POUND followed by Yoga this morning. Happy Saturday!!!

Happy Saturday, all! Tonight we have our family party for my younger daughter’s 16th. Can’t believe she’s 16 already, time certainly flies. There will be pizza and cake so I’ll try to get in some more purposeful exercise steps today to balance that out. Some type of cross training on tap for today along with the usual laundry and Saturday cleaning.

Zumba sounds like it was a fun time, Ruth. Enjoy the (relatively) warmer temps while you can!

Runner, yay! on no port and a good run! Have fun tonight.

Badger, thanks for the recipe. I love squash, family not so much. But she who does the cooking sets the menu around here, so I can see that showing up on our table.

I’ve never had candied yams with the marshmallows. We serve them mashed, made like regular white mashed potatoes. The big thing in our area is green bean casserole. My parents are transplants here and had never had it as part of their family meals and my mom is not a fan, so we are oddballs who don’t have it as part of our celebration. People (around here) are always surprised we don’t make it.

Brutersmom, Thanksgiving breakfast sounds like a great tradition and compromise to help with in-law situations.

Wonderland, love your pie tradition! The best part of thanksgiving for me is that it is a pie holiday. Good thing it’s once a year or I’d be in trouble.

Happy Saturday and happy belated Thanksgiving to all! I am up on the Sonoma Coast, enjoying beautiful weather (some fog and clouds, but quite warm) and even better views...Thanksgiving dinner was here at our vacation rental, with my sister, an exchange student living with sister, and sister's son and wife. We kept it simple but I still couldn't resist doing more actual cooking than my new knee was happy with! It was all delicious. Yesterday (which in my household is not Black Friday but rather 'National Eat Pie for Breakfast Day' :-)) a good friend drove up from San Francisco, and we went for a walk in the late afternoon. Here is a view from the convenient bench we found at our halfway point! Since we are on the NorCal coast, we skipped turkey soup in favor of Dungeness crab caught right out there the same day. Yum! One more day of relaxation at this gorgeous spot...and I think another walk will be the exercise of the day.

Hi everyone; happy Belated Thanksgiving. I apologize in advance for my rant but I am so thankful to have this safe place to do it and I need to get it out...

Haven't been able to do any exercise because I have had lower back spasms for the past eight days. I bent over one of my preschoolers last Friday and found I couldn't stand back up. I've been put on muscle relaxers and pain meds, alternating lidocaine patch and heat. Woke up this morning feeling a lot better. Unfortunately, it was short-lived. I guess I moved the wrong way and now have spasms on both sides. I am so frustrated! I missed all 3 days of school last week and I have to reschedule 20 parent conferences. I couldn't travel the 2 hours to my mom's for Thanksgiving and it was her 89th Birthday. After dealing with these chronic hives for 3 months;I have had enough. I just want my body back! I am missing my Zumba classes with a vengeance. Send some of your exercise endorphins my way because I am seriously lacking right now.

Ok. Rant over. Incredibly thankful for you all

Lilac- your sister sounds amazing. Can't even imagine doing all that!

I hope everybody had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!! I had a bit too much to drink and really paid for it the next day!!!

Felt much better today, and checked out a new Body Combat class! It was AWESOME!!! Did the bike afterwards, but my quads felt like jello - so didn't go as hard/long as usual!!

    Have a great weekend everyone!!

ETA: Thank-You all -for encouragement to try a new class!!!

Ginger, I feel terrible for you! Oddly, I found myself with lower back issues this week; on Wed picked up the laundry basket and got that stabbing pain. Do you take anti-hormonals? I'm convinced that my aching aging body is accelerating into advanced arthritis thanks to anti-hormonals. Rant away, Ginger!

Cdv- my DS turns 16 tomorrow. HBD to our kids!

It's so nice to hear of all your fun holidays. Really, you seem to have it all just right.

I went to yoga class today and avoided backbending.

I know why we all exercise......we all love to eat!

Ginger.....grrrrr......thinking of rescheduling conferences GIVES me back spasms! Should you see a PT for some tailored back exercises? I think a good PT will get you back into the game(or Zumba class) faster than any doctor (with the possible exception of those specializing in sports medicine).

Cheryl: Sorry your house guest didn't feel on Thanksgiving and you had to miss out on the fun.

Brutersmom: I also stay away from the Black Friday madness.

Badger: Thanks for the squash recipe.

Ruth: Your Zumba class sounded like a fun time.

Octo: Gorgeous picture. I also ate pie for breakfast yesterday.

Ginger: How terrible for you! I would be so frustrated. Hoping you find relief SOON. You deserve it!

cdv: Happy Birthday to your dd!

Scared: Glad you liked your new class!

Falconer: Hope you also find relief for your back. Happy Birthday to your ds tomorrow!

ouch, Ginger, that sounds terrible. Sorry you missed spending time with your mom on her b-day. Ruth is on to something with her comment about sports medicine. My mom has hip pain from bursitis and she's going to see a sports med doc next week. They specialize in how the body moves and how to improve that movement. She won't have hip surgery and her regular doc won't keep her on pain pills forever so she has to find a way to cope. He will write her a script for PT and Medicare will pay for most of it, there's an exercise room at the CBRF, and a PT who comes on-site so hoping she will take advantage and just do it. I know it's hard for her. It's sad to see my mom turn into a frail old lady but at 87 it's inevitable. It's great motivation for me, though, to get to the gym. 60 mins today-15 TM, 35 weights, 10 yoga stretch.

Ginger, I can totally relate. About once every two or three years, I manage to pull my back where I literally cannot sit up straight, or sleep flat, or whatever. I have pretty good luck with lying flat on the floor with my calves placed on a chair so my legs are at a 90 degree angle. I do that several times a day for several minutes and it seems like I'm better after two days. My masseuse also recommended a foam roller and it seems like those two things help re-align me.

Fun to read of all the opinions on Thanksgiving staples. Don't get me (or anyone) started on what goes in the stuffing! Coming from a southern family but growing up in the northern midwest, and then frequently having Thanksgiving with a Mass. based family, it is funny how opinionated people are about proper Thanksgiving food. I hated going to the MA home because they put raisins in their stuffing! My co-worker is equally upset that his southern wife used cornbread stuffing.

I almost never venture out on Black Friday either. This year though, I did go to Target on Saturday morning to get a new i phone for myself. It was not a fun, easy venture, but in the end it was worth the $250 gift card.

After the shopping trip, I felt like I needed to get outside, so I went for a 20 minute walk even though my feet were already tired of standing and walking around. I have done some planks this morning and we'll see what the rest of the day brings.

About 16 miles away from my goal of 100 miles of cycling for this week. Feels so good to get my exercise back on track after all the work and of course the conference. I was walking/jogging but neither is the same as cycling for working my entire body. I am glad today for my new rain jacket because I will need it. This will also help me wrap my brain around the month ahead.

Ruth is right about liking to eat, and in my case, a good dinner requires the right wine. The chocolate bread and butter pudding I made last night was just divine with champagne. This to celebrate my neighbor's successful journey through treatment for a cancer of the nether regions.

Sharing a couple of pictures from this past week. - Claire

Ginger, I hope your back is on the mend soon. I cannot imagine the frustration of cancelling all those conferences and now having to reschedule them. Falconer, I hope your back issues go away soon, too. I get spasms occasionally and I think they are related to how much I sit in my case. If I'm chained to my desk and don't get to get up and move around for a few days and am not moving before or after work, it hits me. Back pain is the worst in my opinion, it just makes everything miserable. Feel better soon, both of you!

Falconer, happy birthday to your son! Mine can't get her license until March at the earliest. She's chomping at the bit to be independent. I'd like her to stay my baby for a bit more, but it's not going to happen so I'd better get used to it.

Octogirl, crab for Thanksgiving sounds great to me. Hope you rested your new knee a bit. Sounds like you are doing fantastic on your rehab!

Lilac blue, congrats to your sister. I am so in awe of people who are triathletes. I've known several people who completed Ironman events or other tri events and the training and dedication that goes into it is inspiring.

Claire, have a great ride. Having the equipment to be able to get out there in spite of the weather is so important. Your 100 miles is very motivating to me. I'm not a cyclist but since I've been back to running a while now, it's time to get back to my weekly goals, either time or distance, to self motivate.

This week looks good for keeping to my exercise schedule. Next week not so much. My younger daughter has 2 concerts for the choirs she is in and my niece has a Christmas program. If I can leave work right away on the nights of the performances and get to the gym, I can get in a workout. I just have to have dinner prepped so hubby can handle it or already in the crockpot. Prepping is my downfall. Maybe because I'm already thinking about it, it will happen. I'm going to go with that positive thought. Believing is half the battle

Walked around the neighborhood this morning despite the snowstorm, then this afternoon took two shorter walks with my friend and her dogs between her agility runs. Only 5,000 steps, but that’s better than sitting all day.

I spent most of the afternoon wrapping presents and figuring out what I still need to get (the weather is supposed to hold all week, so the more I get done, the better!). Later on, I dragged a friend over to the new community center. She hadn't been there yet, so I gave her the tour (and sales pitch ). After she signed up and we took a nice 45 minute walk around the track.
