Hi All and welcome Chris! Glad you're here.
Brightness: you will so much better as soon as your port is in and you start your treatment plan.
Just a quick note. I walked/ran tonight.
-
Wonderland, I hope you're right. I'm struggling with being down and crying a lot lately. I force myself to get out and walk, as I know it helps with my mood and helps me sleep better too. I should be packing, but just can't seem to make myself start recently. I think I'll focus on one room today. I'm running out of time. This time next month, I won't live here anymore. I pray my new house is ready so I don't have to be homeless.
I should be sleeping, but my mind is racing. Hopefully I'll be able to fall back to sleep. I'm going to walk in the morning, then come home and pack that one room.
-
Brightness, with all that you're going through, I can understand feeling down and crying is the release. It's good that you're here with us; you're not alone. I think I remember you saying that you were interested in yoga? I've found that yoga helps me to relax. My mind was a racing horse. It's improved considerably since having a regular practice. I feel calmer.
-
Brightness, we do understand. Along with upcoming treatment, the house packing is massive. I truly hope your face-to-face friends & sons, can pitch in to help you and see it to a full completion, to take the pressure off. Falconer is right, yoga chills us and helps to release the relentless yammering. Falconer, any updates on the shoulder? Just got a new book in: Healthy Shoulder Handbook by Dr. Karl Knopf, bought it used on Amazon, to help me create lesson plans for those with frozen shoulder and add some of the exercises it offers. Pink Ribbon Pilates this morning andIwe picked up a new member at the town train station as she came in from Folkestone. S is a terrific addition and really happy she has joined our Pilates tribe.
Body Balance tonight (oh - on Saturday BB for the 1st. time went from flip dog to full wheel, have worked on that for ages - a whaahoo moment for sure!)
-
Thank you for the welcome. It's going to be hot today so I'm headed out for my walk/run now. The rest of the week is going to be Fall-like and I'm so ready for it.
Brightness, I hope you are able to get help packing so you can get some peace in one area.
I too am very interested in yoga so I'll be following along to see what everyone does. My cancer center has yoga.... at 9am on fridays. I work full time and the center is 30 min away from me, so no way I can take advantage. I'm not sure I can find someone near by who specializes in yoga for those recovering from surgery/injury much less breast cancer specific. Mostly near me is hot yoga, fitness yoga and the like. Eventually, I'd love to take part in that, but I've got some issues with ROM following surgery, issues with the abdomen following surgery, and so on. I would like an in-person person to make sure I'm positioned correctly rather than a DVD or YouTube, but I might have to settle for that.
-
I started doing yoga after a group in Madison (Breast Cancer Recovery) offered a free day of yoga with a trainer from NYC. It was held outdoors in a park by a lake. Beautiful setting and there were dozens of people doing yoga. It was a powerful experience that obviously resonated with me. I took classes for a while but that got expensive, so bought a yoga DVD and practiced on my own. I've memorized Rodney Yee's "AM Yoga" 15-min routine. It's a great yoga stretch.
I'll mention again the excellent advice on guidelines for safe exercise for those with or at-risk for lymphedema (pretty much all of us). It was created by our very own NatsFan with input from a variety of sources. There's info for you and your trainers, including a section on yoga. Here's a link to page 1 plus I'll bump it to the top of Active Topics. https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/58/topics/801453?page=1
Have the day off work so DH and I are headed first to the garden shop for bulbs, then planting. Then DH will watch the baseball game and I'll hit the gym. BBL

Brightness, sending hugs your way. Maybe put on some good music to energize you for the packing. You are rebuilding your life and your body and will come out stronger on the other end. It just takes time.
CDV, I'm not sure where you are in IL but I am in the northern suburbs of Chicago and the Cancer Wellness Center has free yoga several times a week. In addition I found that there are some free cancer fitness programs around. But I share your frustration that they have so many day time programs that don't allow for working people. I so wanted to try Tai Chi or Qi Gong and they never offered in the evenings.
Tessu good work on the consistency. I've done four days in a row. Not sure if I'll rest today or not.
Heidi, I feel painfully slow too when I try to run, like my legs are made of lead. Its the doing that matters, not the winning.
DH and I went for a trail walk yesterday, 59 minutes as it turns out. Should have walked around the parking lot another minute.
-
Walk done. Only walked today because it was already getting hot when I got out there. Think I'll throw in another tonight after dinner.
TwoHobbies, I'm in S IL, so resources are not as available as in the Chicago area. I get treatment in St Louis, and even though it is a top notch cancer center, things like yoga are not as available and definitely nothing my MO has info on or recommends to me. I'm going to talk to the RD at the center about diet and sipplements. Maybe she will have some info.
My YMCA offers an exercise group for survivors and have trainers who have special training for those who have had cancer. I see me PS this week and am going to get specifics on my restrictions (he has been dodgy on giving them to me or to my PT and pretty sketchy on what I can and can't do in general) and also talk to my breast surgeon when I see her the following week. I know, for me, when I can get back to my exercise routine, I will feel better. My job has a lot of unnecessary stress and exercise helps me let that go at the end of the day.
-
Exercise has been difficult this week. Walked Murphy a few times, but the wildfire smoke is so thick here that it might not be healthy to be outside today. Also, in the process of moving and taking older DD to college in 2 weeks. And school starts tomorrow with 90 plus degree weather in an unairconditioned school. Yikes!
I will say that before BC, all of this would have been more stressful. Now, I just remind myself that I am alive to enjoy life's roller coaster. Thanks for sharing your daily workouts. Hope to join you soon!

65 mins @gym: 45 treadmill and 20 yoga stretch. ==> 336 cal burned
-
Chris, I was going to suggest the Y and their special programs. I found it to be very slow going and good for recovery. P.S. I have one of those "unnecessarily stressful" jobs too. For some reason, people like to make it stressful.
Peregrinlady - we had smoky haze on Thursday and found out it was Canadian wildfires causing it. I thought it was more local. Ours cleared up by evening though.

Hey ladies, does anyone have advice for Chloe re: exercising with TEs?

6 weeks post bmx. I do an hour of mixed body weight exercises 5 days a week! I do cardio in intervals and I also work my core. Can do everything other than push ups. Still struggling with the sensation it gives me.
Hoping to return to the gym and continue doing powerlifting. I miss lifting heavy weights
-
Chris- the Livestrong program offered by the YMCA was so beneficial to me. Might be worth checking out.
Chloe- I did nothing when I had my TE's in. I was just miserable in pain. It is great you are already doing so much. Hope someone else has a suggestion.
Well, I am still itching with hives but after 3 trips to the ER I am no longer getting face swelling. My poor skin is ravaged; it is so hard not to scratch. I am hoping not to crank up my lymphedema. Still no exercise for me. I will admit to being super cranky.
-
Back from Philadelphia had a fabulous time, what a great city lots of walking and fantastic history and yes I did run the "Rocky" steps well more like fast walk as I am not a runner (as the sculpted sisters know) LB it was an amazing Live event and yes Diana did preview Barre, I stayed in the same hotel as all the trainers so I kept running into them in the lobby and the elevator, if I ran into Kylie Gates once I ran into her 20 times and I met a guy from the U.K. team named Steve Tansey, OMG I am in love with him, he was the nicest guy and when I'm in the U.K. I'm going to try and find him and take a class, he's in London somewhere, two of the kids I take classes from are both rookies on the TAP team both for Flow and they will start shadowing next weekend at a local mini Q so wonderful to see their growth, congratulations on achieving the wheel.
Ginger I am so so sorry you are having such a time of it, I hope the latest treatment works. Ruth looks like you're having a great time. Badger I love how you're embracing the gym. Brightness sending you a gentle (((HUG))). Has been horrifically hot here not really conducive for exercise but went to Body Combat this morning. -
Made it to the gym today. Worked on my strengthening program for about 45 minutes and ended with 20 minutes on the elliptical. I watch someone do the zero gravity elliptical. I decided to try it today. That was an experience. I need a training session for that one.
-
Ginger, ouch! I hope it resolves quickly and does t cause an issue with lymphedema. I'd be cranky too.
Badger, how thoughtful of you to ask for Chloe. I have no input, but thought it's just one more example of how kind and helpful this site is for so many.
Thank you everyone for the encouragement. I got together with a friend for a brisk walk yesterday, then we sat and talked for quite a while. It helped. I got some packing done yesterday. I'm getting closer to being done. The next several weeks will be crazy busy between health and home issues, but once I'm in the new house, I can unpack at my leisure.
-
CDV , if you have a PT, they should be able to get you started on yoga. I'm a PT, and granted, I have an interest in yoga, but most of us are moderately well versed. There are a few free on line yoga sites, and if you show them to the PT, they should be able to help you modify.

chloe, I couldn't do one tenth of what you are ding with TEs, let alone only 6 weeks out. Most surgeons want you to slowly ease into weights after 8 weeks or so. Most beginning tissue healing takes 6-12 weeks, and keeps occurring at a micro level, even if your scars are healing. My PS had me wait until week 6 to lift no more than 5-8 pounds ocassionally, and 10 pounds occasionally after 8 weeks. Sorry I have no other experience to share.

sorry if I missed it, but why do you have hives? I can relate because since all these surgeries I he massive hive as a reaction to lots of stuff. Are you taking antihistamines? I was taking tons of zyrtec and it helped. You can take a 24 hr zyrtec up to.4x per day. Talk to your dr. My derm said to start at 2x per day and go from there
-
I stalled out a bit at the end of the week. I had a walking date, and my.good friend needed to change it to.a walking date. The rest of the weekend has been aerobic toilet cleaning and household chores. I am really feeling the effects of the Femara, and I cannot always get up from a chair without help and pain. I'm even having a hard time stepping up.into the house. I'm giving it 2 more weeks before I talk to MO to look at a med change. I've gained back the 15 pounds I lost,so I feel like I'm starting over. I start back at work/school today, so that will be interesting, and I am hoping I can work back into going to the gym, as our weather is turning fall like already (pouring rain this am, so no outside walking before work).
Have a great week everyone!

Did the whole 50-minute Senior Circuit Training class. Ok, I had to set the machineresistances significantly lower than people significantly older than me, but it still counts.
-
Tessu, YES, it counts and sounds like a wonderful class. Cheryl, good see you back - enjoyed all you wrote what a terrific time you had! Oh yes, do take a class with Steve when you are here and lucky you to run into Kylie. Welcome to those of you who are new or newish' to the thread, and inspired by all activity/exercise posted. Let's keep at it!
Pilates mid-day

A very quick check in. Welcome to the new ladies! I will go back and really read through everything when I get a chance. I spent two days doing nothing but eating and visiting, and yesterday was spent driving, driving, driving. I LOVE my Wisconsin relatives, who are the nicest people in the world, and are just like my mom (who died in 2003). So being with them is super special. I have my 6 weeks post-op doctor's appointment at 10:30, so I am hoping for a "go forth and exercise" clearance!
-
Been gone more than here lately which is why I haven't been posting. Spent Friday thru Monday at a music festival in RI - we camp with friends and it is an alltogether good time. Got my exercise in walking to and from the festival from where we camped, and some dancing to that cajun zydeco beat. The headliner Sunday was Roseann Cash, what a great show she put on, I had never seen her before. Now home for 2 days before we go to Nantucket, my great nephew is in a play there and we are renting a house for a few days with family. I have never been to Nantucket, so looking forward to biking and exploring the island.
When we were camping in Maine, my niece mentioned she recently took up pickleball. I had never heard of it before. Anyone on here ever play it? She made it sound so fun, said it is really taking off in senior communities. Haven't heard about it in my area, but thought it might be a nice addition to keeping me moving.
-
Pat, Patoo plays pickle ball and loves it.
-
My friends who go to Arizona for the winter, love pickle ball. Our new fitness center has it, so they will have to give us all a tutorial before they take off again later this fall.
I 'passed' my physical, am healing nicely (80% there, 4 months before you can expect to be at 100%), and have permission to gradually work myself back into my normal routine. The doctor said 'gradually' a couple times, so I will have to figure out what that means!
I am going to dog-nap the puppies for a little walk.
edited to add that my town's new activity center opened today. I noticed they had a 45 minutes beginner's yoga tonight, so I went. It went fine, but I will definitely be working my way back to 'normal'!
-
2Fun- my hives are a reaction to an antibiotic I took for my ear infection. I am allergic to almost all antibiotics. I was seen in the ER 3 times last week and prescribed different combinations of steroids and antihistamines with no good results. I saw my dr today and she wants me to stop taking all of the meds and clear my system out. My oxygen level has been down also so I will be taking my inhaler. No exercise yet.She is referring me to an allergist and we will do testing to figure out what is going on.
-
Week two, day one of the c25k program I started. I walked for another mile after I was done to bring my total to 3. I walked for a half an hour at lunch today. Didn't measure the distance. It was nice to be out in the sun away from my desk in the beautiful weather we are having.
-
One more picture from my trip. My brother lives in Stillwater, Mn. which is a beautiful Victorian town on St. Croix River, which is the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin. Sunday, the family wandered around down by the river and walked across the bridge over to Wisconsin and back.
