I posted a while back about joining your project. I just started knitting again after having thumb joint reconstruction surgery this past summer. I haven't made any squares, yet. I'm still working on a scarf for my great niece, which, I'll hopefully finish soon. I have a few questions. I have a lot of Lion Brand Homespun yarn left over from various projects. Is that too heavy to use for the squares? What about worsted weight? Do you knit to a certain guage? The dimension is 7sx9" without the border, correct?

Hi, Hauntie ~ I hope your thumb is healing well.  I can't answer your questions about the yarn or the knitting gauge (I'm a crocheter), but I'm sure someone else will be along who can.  I can tell you that, yes, the 7x9 is without the border.

Hi Hauntie.....glad to hear you're healing and back to knitting.  As far as gauge we just ask they be tight so that when we border them they aren't loose.  Any washable yarn is good.  Yes the size is 7x9 pre border.  Thanks for joining in.

I'm trying to get a couple of boxes of hugs mailed off asap.  I did receive squares from jenni and Laura.  Thanks girls!

Thanks again to every one of you for helping us continue this project.  It is dear to mine and Madison's hearts.

     Hugs

Just checking in. I will try to get some different yarn this week. I have been working on one of those one-pound skeins.  Getting tired of the same color for block after block! It has turned cold now so definitely stuck inside for the rest of the winter I guess.....

My mom has been cleaning and has found several bags with balls of 'left-over' yarn from projects that she finished who knows when that she is giving me, I may mix them up and make some striped squares. the colors may be crazy but they will be very individual.

    Hi, Everyone ~
My sister-in-law passed away two weeks ago, and from her belongings I got a crocheted blanket.  I plan to take it apart and use the yarn for squares.  If this sounds unfeeling of me, it's really not that way.  She didn't make the blanket nor did anyone in the family; it was given to her by her sister, and that sister gave me her blessing to use this yarn in our project. Smile

Like Sheila, I may get some crazy squares because this blanket actually looks like it was made from leftovers itself, lol. Wink

I hope you've all had a good weekend,
    Artemis

A quick summary would be fabulous!!

Not snowy here in VA either! I am so glad!  Milder weather the past few days makes walking the dog nicer in the afternoons anyway. Back to work tomorrow.....

Hmm. Starting to think we need a snow day in order to just stay home from work and knit. So far I have been extremely lucky with the weather and I have been running around doing other stuff! Hope everyone is well.

Laura I got your box....thank you!  It's been a little crazy around here but I'm bordering and putting together hugaghans when I can.  I know Madison has been very busy as well.  Though we are busy, we will continue to send boxes of hugs.

Thanks so much again to each of you!

Thought I'd share. It's crochet called the Camel Stitch:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1arq-sE9wD4

Instructions  1 Work the first row of your pattern, the stitches built off the base chain, in single crochet.2 Chain one stitch and turn your work.3 Insert the hook through both loops of the post, just beneath the top edge of the first stitch of the previous row.4 Work one single crochet stitch. Continue across the row in this pattern.5 Chain one stitch and turn your work at the end of every row. Work into the front post of every stitch in every row on both sides of the piece.

    hi lisa ! welcome !

the squares are 7 inches by 9 inches (before the black border), medium weight, machine washable and machine dryable, crocheted or knitted, as you can see from madison and liz's photos they are a riot of color .... they are bordered with Red Heart Black (you can do it yourself or send them on to someone who will add the border) with a double crochet along the sides and a *double crochet, single chain, double crochet, single chain, double crochet* in each of the corners ...

liz madison or one of the border patrol will pm you an address when you are ready ...

I have accumulated a pretty big box of unbordered squares (I guess 40 or so.) I can mail them Monday to whoever wants/needs them? (just need to work the "tails" in so they're not messy)

I've checked out this thread before, but haven't sent in any squares. I work, with 3rd graders, a couple of days a week at an extended day after school program. One of the other teachers recently taught the kids to crochet (me as well - I never realized how much faster it is than knitting and way more relaxing.) Anyway, I had a bunch of bulky weight Lion Brand Homespun yarn left over from a variety of projects. I thought this yarn would be too bulky for squares to send in to someone on this thread for an afghan. So, I decided to have the kids make enough squares for a complete afghan.

It hasn't gone as well as I expected - I've had several kids start squares, but only 1 has finished a square.  However, I'm crocheting like crazy and have finished about 15 squares - borders and all. I brought in all of them the other day and laid them out for the kids to take a look at. This sparked some interest and several girls started squares. If they finish them, we'll be half way towards our 42 squares. I'm going to try and recruit kids from other extended day classes to join in.

If I can keep them motivated, I'm going to stop crocheting squares for this project and use the stores of medium weight yarn I have to learn different crochet stitiches, by making squares to send to someone on this thread. Right now, all I can do is SC and DC.

I'm not sure whether I'll send the finished afghan to Warm Up America or have the kids personally give it to a needy person at the assisted living facility right next door to our school.

One question, we're not nearly there yet, but once all the squares are complete,  how do I attach them together - sew, crochet?
