Obama had a Democratic majority the first two years. He would have gotten something like Glass Steagle back during that time. America was really po'd at Wall Street. But all Presidents make mistakes. We'll just have to see what his next four years gets done.
-
Yep, Athena. IMO, some people should have been arrested and tried for the torture.
And GG, I agree that the President was waaay too slow to realize the Republicans' absolute irrational obstruction and willingness to damage the country just to get him out of office. It really is hard to believe that they hate the President so much that they were willing to flush the country down the crapper to stymie him. Witness the debt ceiling debacle -- really?? Do people REALLY want that party BACK in charge after that? It boggles the mind! I think the President understands now that there is nothing the Republicans in Congress will not stoop to so that they can prevent him from having any successes. I hope he removes the gloves in his second term!
Here is a good article from Greg Sargent at the WaPo on how the unemployment conspiracy theorists are NOT helping Romney:

yes, that too.

He never had a filibuster proof majority though. And Democrats do not march lockstep whether they agree or not like the Rs do. I like that Dems are not that authoritarian and controlled but sometimes it does throw a wrench in the works.
Agree with gumby that Obama took too long to really accept that the Rs would throw the country under the bus for their own political interests.
-
HappyLibby - the problem is that there are soooo many people who don't realize the debt ceiling has to do with money already spent rather than money that will be spent. They don't get it because they choose not to listen to those who will tell them the real meaning rather than the meaning that makes the President look bad.
I mean - look at how many people still believe he was born in Kenya, or is a Muslim, or is Arab (though why the last two should matter is beyond me...) but I digress - people (and I do need to include myself in this) don't always look up the truth of something - they believe what they have heard the most from the people they choose to trust. I don't have the time (nor energy) to look up every niggling thing - and so choose to believe much of what I hear from a given set of sources.
Generally speaking my favorite television news source is ABC. Generally speaking my favorite internet news source is Reuters. I seldom read blogs as I'm not all that interested (usually) in people's opinions on what's happening. I want to know what's happening! And though I enjoy listening to programs where I in general agree with the commentators, that certainly doesn't mean that I view them as a valid source of information most of the time. Though I will NOT listen to Rush Limbaugh, the man makes me ill, I will listen to other conservative talkers. I want to know what they think. 1/2 of this country (almost) identifies itself as Republican. I cannot in good conscience ignore them if I don't want them to ignore me - and I always listen to my conscience, as it has held me in good stead through my life.
-
One of the MSNBC anckors - dont remember which - debunked the myth that Obama had a super majority for the first two years of his term. He did have something like two or three months when the Senate Dems were at 60.
Agree that he spent way too much time in the first two years trying to work with a party that had decided it would do nothing that might improve the country and thereby increase o's chances of reelection.

notself = what WR said, AND, most of the Deomocrats were (are?) as beholdin' ( don't forget to drop the g) to BigggggggMoney as the rethuglicans - so there really were NOT the votes, sad, sad...I miss REAL democrats as well as I miss real republicans....
alas....
Belinda - YOU ARE ON A ROLL!!!! Missed one of the cartoons - but the "platter" one is fantastic...glad y'all liked the Muppets song....
Check out headline on HuffPo..."tin hats" - tee, hee....they could post here if they liked brussell sprouts

-
shaking head....the soteries, or sotises people believe and say!
-
Yes, Athena - my head is shaking too - what they're drinking over there - the pure hatred and profound ignorance is a wonder to behold.
-
On a more happy note ... Hillary and Barack to the rescue

-
Oh, thanks great, WR!
That pic would also be great with Reese from Person of Interest, as well (Jim Caviezel) - yummy!
-
Belinda - your cartoons are great and so fitting. The birthers are alive and well I see. Honestly, can't wrap my head around the fact that real people can go on and on with "Obama is a muslim"..."Obama was born in Kenya"...."the BLS faked the unemployment numbers"...."all polls except the ones we like are wrong"......it's no wonder Romney believes he can take 4 sides of a position and get away with it.
-
Love the cartoons. No need to add anything -- you have all said it so well---the lunacy of Mulim/Arab or whatever religion. The willingness to sacrifice everything, toss it ALL away,so as not to work with a President. Quite a derangement along with character deficiency of the utmost.
GG....R. Limbaugh. He is a discredit to the human race. JMHO, but don't say that about too many.
Happy Friday everyone with our rain and coolish 47 degree temps. here. Brrrrr. Not ready for summer to go, but then we had so little of it.
See you all later.

Too, too funny about the BLS conspiracy! The one and only President ever accused (by Woodward and Bernstein, with lots of proof) of even trying to manipulate the statistics was....wait for it.... Richard Nixon! Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose
.ETA: No one is useless. One can always serve as a bad example.

You know, I've been so happy about the unemployment numbers and all those people who now have jobs, it only just now occurred to me -- the unemployment rate went below 8% IN SPITE OF Congressional Republicans' dedicated efforts to make sure it remained high. They refused to take up the President's Jobs bill, which has languished in the House for a year.
Just think of all those families who suffered that much longer because the Republicans in Congress only cared about defeating the President in the election. Millions of people might have been back to work months or years sooner had the Republicans done their jobs.
For shame.

Different topic here...
I went to my family doctor today(not oncologist) for my annual touching base, if you will, regarding my health other than breast cancer. She had a substitute PA, who took my blood pressure and stuff like that. I asked her to take my BP on my left (non-surgery) side, and she did. I got my flu shot and my pnuemonia shot. I asked the PA to please give both to me on my left arm(my non-surgery side). Her response? "Oh, I thought you'd want them both on your right arm. All the breast cancer patients I know choose the right side." WTF???? She obviously knew nothing about lympedema risk. Why would she do my BP on my left arm, like I asked her to, and then assume I wanted shots in my other arm? I stuck to my guns and got my shots in the side I wanted.
I didn't bother complaining to my doctor since the PA was a sub. But geez......
Mary
-
Mary -- Given time, I think many PA's can be all right, but I do think yours sounds like she was a bit confused. Maybe she forgot for a second and thought of you as a non-cancer patient totally, and then didn't want to own up to her lapse.
Well, of course, good for you making sure that she "left" your "right" arm alone. Ok...I was trying to find an excuse but re-reading your entry see what she said about all the breast cancer patients she knows. Wonder just how many that might be. In kindness as well......maybe lympedema is not as important as other cancer chapters when you study for your PA certificate. Well, if nothing else you helped educate her....hopefully she went home tonight and looked up lymphedema. Lets hope.

Something I just saw:

-
Happy Friday, all. Always been my favorite day of the week. there's something about having the promise of the weekend ahead ....
Mary, when I woke up from my BMX, they had the blood pressure cuff on the right side - the side that had had the lymph nodes removed. You'd think that the hospital doing the surgery would do better.
Hurray for under 8 percent unemployment! On conspiracy theories: I'm waiting to see the Fox news team wearing aluminum hats to keep out the alien mental beams.
-
I was admitted to the hospital some months after my surgery for a ruptured appendix. My husband had the nurses make a sign and put it above my bed. It said, no BP or blood draws on the right arm. The nurse was very cooperative and though it was a good "just to be safe" idea.
-
I have a similar sign to take to the hospital if needed. I also took a Sharpie and wrote a big black NO on my wrist, antecubital, back of the hand, etc. The staff thought both were fabulous ideas.
-
I really hate that I have difficult veins and now I only have one arm in which to search for a vein. They usually have to go for a vein in my hand, or the one that runs down my inner forearm. It was never easy when I had 2 good arms, now I only have 1.

A gf sent me this one tonite:
Word for the day: Romnesia (noun): The condition or state of telling new lies when one has forgotten the lies one told a week before
-
What do you do when you have nodes removed from both??? I get them to do it on the one that had the least removed

Went for a ride at 7am to beat the heat - did 14.32kms. I am so anal, I started a spread sheet to record my distances and times. I was writing it on a note pad but the page filled up. I called the file Cycle Diary of SusieQ. Love the new pc btw.
-
Truth serum is the only way to get truth out of Romney. And I bet both sides would be surprised and shocked at what came out. Or maybe there is no truth ... and he just doesn't care about any of it as long as he gets what he wants.
I want to see candidates questioned while hooked up to lie detectors - with an electric shock delivered each time they fib or stretch the truth. They'd be up there jumping around like fish out of water.
You computer types and your spreadsheets
Sounds like a good motivational tool. But I'd end up sitting on my duff playing with the spreadsheet and never make it out to the bike. Been raining all day ... ugh ... and now it's gotten cold. Hoping for some sunshine tomorrow.
-
Wr -- Your rain has moved east and is drenching us now!
Truth serum -- interesting idea, but never possible in the world of politics! I've said it before but I'll say it again: Politics is the art of compromise, and I'm happy to note that it works in most other democratic countries. Boggles my mind that the U.S. is so "hornswoggled" (I love that word!) by such exteme partisanship. Signing a pledge of no tax increases to someone who hasn't even bothered to run for election (Norquist) is simply unbelievable, and anyone who has signed that pledge is a traitor to the U.S., in my opinion. So much for American-style democracy. It leaves much to be desired......
-
WR - LOL - I'm just enjoying my new PC - no more crashes
I still can't believe I got it set up so quickly and without any major headaches. -
Yram, I had a bone scan the other day, where they have to shoot you up with radioactive junk. I tried to tell the intake doc that I have lymph issues on BOTH sides and busted veins as well, so to be careful and do the shot as far down towards the hand as possible. I had to explain 3-4 times, because she just kept looking at my arm and saying that my veins looked good, so no problem. Finally she got one of the techs to do the shot without tying off the arm. She obviously thought I was insane, but she tried in the end.
Suzie, when I had the hyster, I actually made them do the surgery without using my arms at all. At the time I had active swelling (minor, but active) on both sides. They thought I was balmy, but complied. So I had the automatic BP cuff on my leg, I had the starter IV in my ankle, and once I was out, he put the second IV in my neck. He removed the neck one, before I woke up and they left the ankle one for the post-op drop. They also did the pre-op blood draw on my ankle.
