I suppose now that the hurricane seems to be shifting to the west, the blathering will start that the God-appointed Republican faithful prayed it away. Yeah-right into poor New Orleans.  Bobby Jindal better put his money where his mouth is and not ask for any federal funds.

Kira, That is concerning about Barbara (missing the get-together). Do you have a way to let her know we miss and think about her? Poor thing with an awful job. Been there, hate that! She need not post, but at least she might gain strength by seeing that we are behind her.

While we don't have magpies here we do have a pileated woodpecker (the big one that looks like woody the woodpecker) that visits from time to time. I was tickled yesterday when grandson Thomas was looking out the window at our feeders and started hollering "grandma, grandma, a pileated woodpecker". So cool that he gets as excited as we do and knows the different birds that visit us!

Pileated woodpecker - noisy, HUGE, and seeing the large pile of chips on the ground is the best way to find them around here. My favorite visitor lately has been an Indigo Bunting.  Just in awe of that color.  Mornings are beginning to have that Fall will be here soon feeling, in the 50's.  Still so dry, don't know what leaf peeper season will bring.  Feel badly for the farmers too.  Apple crop was early in very warm Spring - then hit by 4 below 26 degrees in April - literally lost a crop, hope a few of my favorite sun crisp survived.  Like CLC, love getting food grown locally, tho not as "local" as heres, across the street is still pretty local

Wow, I stay away from the computer for a weekend and miss a whole bunch!   I love magpies, though they don't live on this side of the Cascades - gotta go to eastern Washington to see 'em.  Crows will also attack during nesting season - and sometimes other reasons as well - like if they are expecting you to feed them and you don't. 

I had a BUSY weekend.  I made a double batch of dill relish on Saturday (canned 32 1/2 pints).  My husband loves the stuff, so we spent all day making it.  Sunday I slept in until 10-10:30ish, and then had some energy again, so I made pickled carrots, raspberry cordial and lemon/cardamom liqueur.  Maybe we can try out some of the liqueur during cocktail hour...  .  I've got a recipe for a spice liqueur that calls for angelica root, but I've never heard of angelica root, so am somewhat hesitant.  Does anyone know what kind of flavor it has?

It's a beautiful day here.  I've been busy working, as well as getting my marketing materials in the mail.  I'm not giving up hope on finding new clients.

Sent Barbara an email, but I haven't heard back from her yet.  I have her phone numbers, so if I don't hear anything in a day to two, I'll give her a call.

Sunnyflowers ... It did feel like a hint of fall in the air this morning when I walked the dogs.  My anjou pears really suffered this year. The asian pears are doing okay though.  I love fall ... the only drawback is all the leaf blowing!

Illinois Lady ... I sure hope we got enough rain this year to turn the leaves brilliant colors this fall.

Gumby ... OMG .. you sure were busy this weekend!

Blue ... Thinking of you and hoping you've heard something by now from the pain management clinic.  Hope Ray is enjoying his new job and that Virg is doing okay.

Ha - just looked up angelica root - I think I'll pass on that addition....  It's given to women during menopause to relieve symptoms.  Given that my cancer is of the ER+ variety, that seems a good herb to avoid.  So my spice liqueur recipe will need to be my own concoction. 

Blue .. So glad to hear you have an appointment for the CT scan.  Early September isn't that far off.  I'm also very relieved to hear Virg is doing better.

Gumby .. I think you're on the right track by skipping that herb.  My cancer was 100% ER+ as well.

I just got a note back from Barbara.  She's very busy actively looking for another job. She's concerned about privacy issues and has also deleted her FB account. She may be in the Shenandoah area in October, in which case I'll drive up there and meet them for the day.  I think it's about two hours away from me.

This report I'm working on is endless!  arghhh.

Great to hear Barb is Ok - hope she finds a new job.

We had 2 visitors yesterday afternoon - 2 magpies on our front verandah - Poppy was very interested, meowed at them and only relaxed when they went back into the trees.

I'm disappearing for awhile (just when you barely know who I am!).  Surgery on Thursday (ooph, TE exchange and port removal - yeah!!).  I'll be glad to get out of Dodge.  We have a big fire south of here (not too far) and it is sending all kinds of smoke our way.  The politics are heating up as a lot of the land burning or being threatned is owned by Hearst, SPI (the biggest private landowner in the USA) and these private fishing clubs (just imagine who owns shares in those and you will be correct).  Just sorry I have to leave my animals behind   (Surgery is 350 miles away.)

Kira - I usually see Magpies in California in the agricultural valleys...they are a low elevation bird.  B&W
