Yikes - I think I would prefer a magpie to a bear
They only attack when they are nesting - trying to protect the eggs. Once they hatch I think it's OK. The man I saw being attacked was on a main road across from the shopping centre - not even near any trees really - poor bloke - it seemed determined to have a go at him.Today must be my energy day - just vacc'd downstairs (no I'm not complaing or depressed about it - that was for others who might read here but not post - long story).
Gorgeous day here but I'm glad I got the ride out of the way early, nothing left to do except rest and enjoy the weather. Might go and buy some plants - the bloody possums have already had a chew of my new parsley.
-
Forgot to tell you - we actually have a web site here which has maps of where the magpies are rampant. Just checked this year's map - none noted in my cycling area - good. Also read that it only goes for 6 weeks, but breeding is from June to December, so that 6 week period only applies to each nest.
-
Susie - I liked New Zealand. As far as I could figure, there were no animals to be fearful of disturbing. I can't account for any possible arachnids and insects they might have, though.
-
(WR, otter was here)

Seriously... I'm just lurking occasionally, and this is now the only thread I follow on BCO.
otter

A sighting - yey! Just sent my mother a Youtube clip showing an otter using a rock to open a clam. We were discussing the debunked notion that humans are the only species to use tools.
How are you doing these days, otter?
-
Kam - I totally love NZ - want to go back desperately. I was born there but have lived here for 50 years. There is only one deadly spider there and that's it. No snakes like we have in Aust. Would love to retire there one day....here's hoping.
-
Got a close up look at some great cyclists today! The ProChallenge went right past my mountain subdivision, so we hiked down to the toughest part of the next to the last climb and cheered everyone on. They went by so quickly that it was hard to see their numbers, but I spotted Hincapie right off--so tall! All those gorgeous legs, powering up the steep mile that makes me want to get off and walk...It was so much fun being part of a crowd like that!
I figure Lance probably took EPO and blood doped--no different from his chemo treatments. But he never failed a test. I will always support him and his legacy, not just on the bike. I'm hoping the next generation will believe in clean riding.
-
Kam, no hobbits?
-
Chickadee - hee hee. There was this little bird, that sorta looked like you
, that hopped behind us as we hiked up a trail. Crazy us, we thought the bird liked us. Turned out he was eating the bugs we stirred up in the dust.AnneW - saw a bit of that on tv today. Are there only 7 stages?
-
Yeah, an otter sighting. Same here, otter. Abalone always available at the bar, at least when I'm here
Glad you're still at least lurking...Happy Sunday everyone...
-
Hi all, Back from the wilds of the Bronx, New York. Susie - scary sounding birds. Maybe you should bike with your cat on your shoulder.
Kam - where did all the orcs go?
Athena - didn't realize you lived in Georgetown. What a beautiful area. I have relatives in Silver Spring that I visit on occasion.
So I was listening to the description of the Republican platform this morning on one of the talk shows, and it sounds like they want no exceptions for the no-abortion rule, even to save the of the mother. I also wonder how they can be sooo concerned about embryos and so unconcerned about poor children that they cut food stamps, medicaid, Pell grants etc. Can anyone explain the reasoning of that to me?
-
Alexandria - orcs?
The RNC opening night postponed to Tuesday due to Issac skirting Tampa. Now Issac is tracking more westerly and due to hit New Orleans Tuesday night. Can't win, can they?
-
Kam - New Zealand. Land of Lord of the Rings. I was responding to the idea of there not being any dangerous animals. And aren't there sheep-eating parrots there, too?
Poor New Orleans.
-
I've been waiting patiently for Pat Robertson to explain to us why God is sending a hurricane to disrupt the Republican Convention ... all I've heard is crickets chirping though.

I'm not really grumpy this morning but I still thought this was funny. Don't we all wish we had such power sometimes.

Missed the otter but glad to see we had a visit

-
Alexandria.....illogical, irrational, but what's new. I think most of those people haven't heard of "that place" and the hand basket. Even the merest thought of any kind of respect is a long way off. I think someone else said it here first.......I was amazed at the Bush years and certainly feeling the second term couldn't possibly happen. I also think....what self-respecting R's could let their fellows make such wild statements and then act as though they see nothing out of place. Oh well.....ill-balanced people.
WR....love the cartoon.
Hope you all have a great Sunday.

WR -- that is TOO funny!
Otter -- Great to see (briefly) you!
Back in the day (many years ago) when I was first pregnant, my DH was most concerned by the fact that I had a Catholic obstetrician. Used to be that Catholics felt obligated to save the baby's life rather than the mom's if there was a situation where both mother and babe were in danger.
My DH didn't like that much (!) and made sure the doc wasn't adhering to that line of thinking. He wasn't -- after all, he said it didn't make much sense to allow a mother (who might have other children) to die.
I don't know for sure, but I very much doubt that Catholic docs still believe the babe's life takes precedence. But obviously, the GOP does.......
-
LOL - like my day yesterday, Wabbit.
Alexandria, don't be a stranger if you pass by these parts again.
I really miss Barbara and wonder how she is - she may also be fearing the hurricane, as she lives in the area.
BARBARA! Hoping you are ok!
-
Lol @ WR's white rabbit.
-
Hahaha, love the cartoon WH! Reminds me of cartoons I've seen where a giant seal is clubbing a tiny human hunter.

Have a wonderful Sunday everybody!
-
The thing that makes me so crazy is a view that women do not even have a right to live. The mom's value is as a baby creator; she has no value in and of her self as a human being. Whatever happen to the constitutional right to life for the mother? Under what other non-military circumstances, does our society tell a person that he has to lose his health or life because it might give someone else a chance to live?
Can you imagine my previous scencario when I talked about giving up a kidney to save someone else? What if the transplant actually cost you your life? What if we have a government law requiring that a person over 30 who was compatible with a child who was dying of heart disease had to have their heart cut out for a heart transplant because that child's life mattered more than the adult's? Can you imagine the revolution?
-
Hey, Athena, I may be coming down in a few weeks - depending on the job situation and the surgery. Would love to drop by your den.
-
alexandria ... exactly right. The original basis of that value system is the male domination of society. The child might have been a son and a son had more value than a wife in their eyes. Therefore if a woman had to die ... well so be it ... they would just get a new one.
The only person I know who had a pregnancy terminated had eclampsia. She wanted that baby ... but the baby was going to die anyway and the only choice was if she would die also. At the age of 28. Laws with no exceptions will kill women ... it's as simple as that.
ETA ... oh and don't give them any ideas. Next thing you know they will be wanting our livers and kidneys as well as use of our wombs whether we approve or not.
-
Agreed. Lionesses are too proud to espouse any ideas that remotely invoke self pity so I hate to say this, but male legilsators are runing rampany over women's bodies on this issue.
And the tale about women not being able to procreate if they get pregnant --and how a doctor Romney knows espouses that idea-- reminds me of the Terry Schiavo case - remember that? Shame on Jeb Bush for using a person's life for political gain. I knew Tom DeLay would do it -he's a sociopath-, but I didn't expect J. Bush to go so low. The reason why I now think of that case is how the Schindlers, Terry's parents, actually told Larry King "there's nothing wrong with Terry." and how CNN allowed a quack with an MD to come up and say that Terry Schiavo could be cured. Yes, I know you hear stories about people waking up/making unexpected gains after xxxx years but those are notorious for their extreme rarity. In the Schiavo case, you had fanatics distorting the facts of science just as you saw last week with rape.
I thought it was only in Nazi Germany where science was political. Apparently not....
-
I can't even read that stuff. Makes me too angry.
Welcome IllionoisLady.
-
The wind is already getting stronger, and Ivan isn't crossing our area till Monday. We have the shutters up just in case.
-
Stay safe Kira!
-
Alexandria - 'splain the "reseasoning" - you sure you meant that last word? Based on the root word, ah, reason? Boy, I'm comin' up real empty on that one...real, real empty...
joining those in waiting to hear Pat Robertson's splanation of da weather...should we get the popcorn ready?
-
Sunflowers, popcorn and kool-aid, cause that's the only way Robertson's spin will make any sense!
-
Stay safe Kira. And Barbara-I'm thinking of you too! We miss you around here!
Mary
-
Alexandria - don't worry, I've already thought of some sort of cat carrier for my bike

Don't like the sound of your politicians.
