We're in the throes of Irene now but the worst is due to hit around 3am. So far we still have power though the lights fade for a second now & then. We're well prepared with food, water, etc., and I evacuated my aunt and mom (both of whom live on the water) to my farther-inland house. Despite the worries, we're having a good time together.
Best wishes to all in the hurricane's path! Stay safe out there.
Personally, I'd love to have rainbowpony post here as long as things stay civil. There's really no need to criticize our fashion sense, or lack thereof.

First Impressions: If someone is dressed up and wearing make up and bling, unless it's a special occasion I wonder what image they are trying to project and whether they are suffering low self-esteem, then wait to see what sort of person they are. What's in our hearts and what actions we take mean more than our looks.
I'm a jeans person myself. Someone I know well is always impeccably dressed and groomed and her life and relationships are a mess. The men she attracts are mostly abusive on some level. If I were ultra rich I still wouldn't dress up most of the time. If people judge me by my looks then they aren't worth knowing so it acts as a great filter.
So glad to hear Irene has lost strength and hope you will all be fine. It's great to hear how people help each other out in these situations. I'm sure many strong friendships will be formed.

Good luck to everybody facing the hurricane. And goodnight.

My niece is in law school in Virginia Beach (actually closer to the Hampton Roads area). She's taken a lot of the precautions you all have listed, but she also turned down the temperature of their refrigerator a few days ago, so if the power goes out, the food will stay cold longer. Also, she and her husband charged up both cell phones but are only using one at a time to make the batteries last twice as long.
I was talking to her on Facebook and we cobbled this together. I thought it was funny, anyway.
A hurricane game to make the time go by:
Top Ten Ways To Know That Hurricane Irene Likes You
10. Classes are out!
9. Irene veered back out to sea just so it could dump extra water on me.
8. I was forced to get some rest by staying at home.
7. Our pantry is now stocked for the next three weeks, and we won't have to go grocery shopping for a while.
6. We have a cool story to tell.
5. Quality time with my husband who I never see because of school/work!
4. I was able to catch up on all of the TV shows that I like to watch and haven't had time to watch.
3. The siding on our apartment that needed pressure washed is now sparkling.
2. We now have enough batteries to last the next five years.
and the number one way to know Irene likes you:
1. I live 15 miles inland and I now have oceanfront property!
-
Good for you, E - hope you keep your power.
-
E -- Hope you have some already-ground coffee, and a gas grill! Thinking about you - stay safe, hon.
Joy- Since I retired, I've become a jeans person too! And since BC treatment, comfort definitely takes priority.
ETA: Great list, Riley!

I cannot believe the insults from RP re our style of dress at NOTL - as for first impressions I guess we all have our first impression of RP (and our 2nd and 3rd, etc., etc.) and none of them are good - why is that?
-
After looking at that picture many times, I couldn't tell you what anyone was wearing. What I remember is the smiles.
-
same here revkat! you all looked to be having a great time in each others company,

(If you missed this bit, it was a minor rant regarding deletions and non deletions.. :-) )
I hope NYC isn't faring too badly just about now....
-
Understood, Athena.
How's everyone faring this morning?
-
OK here in FL. Worried about NYC, though. And worried about Ducky's house. Southern NJ got hit hard. Well, is still getting hit also.

Hi, all,
RAIN. More rain than I've ever seen, including weeks in Bombay, India years ago. Winds will pick up a bit later. Power company has been FANTASTIC! Has these HUGE orange "hook& ladder" trucks stationed at strategic places, some near my General store where they HAD the NY Sunday Times ready for us to pick up. Whew, what a relief. It's my Sunday Staple. Well, tea, but a week without the Sunday NYTimes Crosswrod Puzzle, would be difficult.
Friends in Bethesda still have POWER. Hope Athena is faring well too. Can't imagine Old Town, Alexandria - oh, my!
-
My aunt's neighborhood was under a "tornado warning -take cover!" order last night. I'm so glad she came to stay with us.
-
I'm glad to see that some of you that I've been worrying about are still here posting. I hope that you all stay safe.
Regarding fashion sense - I printed the NOTL picture out and keep in by my computer because all the happy faces make me feel happy and when I read a post by somebody whose user name I've paired up with a face on the picture it enriches the discussion here. Everybody looks just as I'd expect a gathering of friends to look.
I had a friend who passed away years ago. During the time I knew her she was in her 80s and never left the house without wearing heels and makeup. I never saw her in pants. Other friends made fun of her behind her back calling her Dress Up Donna. I thought that was as cruel as RP's critique of those in the NOTL photo. It simply points out that class and style are two separate things that don't necessarily go together.
-
Morning All!
Ann .. thanks for posting the picture again .. it was the best time of my life!
Juliet .. Welcome!! Hope you will post more often!
E .. thanks for the update on Libby. I'm really worried about her. I read about the tornado warning last night. Very scary.
Sunflowers .. glad you get to do your crossword puzzle this a.m.
Well .. I need to shower, shine and shave and get ready for Mr. Tim to come home. Need to get to walmart and get things for dinner so he won't have to cook when he gets home. Spent all day yesterday cleaning .. he'll think he's in the wrong house!
hugs all round,
Bren
PS .. River we were posting at the same time. I'm so glad you printed out our picture. It's wonderful to put names to faces and actually feel the person talking when reading what they write.

Everything well and fine here.
To the mods: please stop telling us to ignore everything. We're not chopped liver; we don't deserve to be treated like it. BCOs history is living proof that "ignore" never works and careful action does. I din't think anyone - at a school, at a law enforcement agency, at a social club or a sport would eve advocate "just ignoring." Rather, appropriate, concrete steps are the answer. I am sick of the internalized sexism we encounter here when we are asked to "just ignore." It infantilizes us and ignores our feelings.
How about "just forbid RP from posting on this thread." She has shown that she cannot do so in a respectful manner. Instead of asking everyone else to change, setting limits on one person should be easier, no?
-
Athena, Just saw what you were referring to. Didn't realize Melissa, Judith & Co. were back to deleting. Wel, FINE, let them keep deleting. I WILL SPEAK MY TRUTH. Patzee (who now calls herself RainbowPony ) and used to be mindovermatter, so many names who knows - started her rants with DON'T DO IT. Continued to ATTACK this thread and BCO on the review site - AND THE MODERATORS KNOW IT. AND the moderators know IGNORING her only seems to egg her on to be more destructive.
No one posts on Patzee's threads - and doesn't want to have anything to do with her. WHY ARE WE being "punished" for her behavior????? PLEASE PLEASE just tell her NOT TO POST on this thread.
It is because of Patzee/RainbowPony and people she was supporting that this thread was attacked on the Review site and had to be REMOVED from the Active Thread.
If this is deleted, I will keep reposting it. Thanks, Athena. I didn't realize the Moderators were trying to IGNORE it again.
-
I don't think that ignoring trouble-makers works either, Athena. The only thing that will help is an unexpected maturation or epiphany on their part.
On a happy, happy-face note, I bought myself the cutest pair of PJs at Wal-Mart yesterday. Only $12!
