    Of course you did...

So, Kahlua over Death by Chocolate ice cream? Yummy. Have you ever tried Bailey's over Breyer's chocolate ice cream? Excuse me as I wipe a little drool away.

Dice, cribbage, dominoes, and Anagrams (you need more than 2 for a good game of Anagrams, but it's a good change from Scrabble.)  Boggle!!  Books. Hand-written cards & letters to old friends.

Water. Easy food & treats. Chocolate.  A fresh can of whipping cream.  A flashlight in every room & a small one for your pocket.  Foul weather gear and sensible shoes (sequins optional).  Water.  Some way to have water.  Don't forget to trim the wicks on the oil lamps - much better flame & light.  Find an Aladdin lamp if you can - they give out about 5 times the light of a plain oil/kerosene lamp.  Dig out your old mending basket and sew on buttons or get crafty...

Sunflowers, I hope your trees hold up.  Big wind in big trees can be pretty scarey - add wet ground and....  real scarey. I'm thinking of you - we were glad to have an engineered and trussed roof when we got hit twice last winter...  And Ducky - I reallly hope you're ok - you and your homes and your memories.

All you eastern seaboarders & those you love, stay safe.

Not all California is the same.

eta: if you still have power, do a load of laundry.  If you don't have a generator, and the power goes out cover your fridge with a quilt.  I keep ice "blocks" frozen in the freezer in plastic containers, and when (note the "when") the power goes out, put the ice in the fridge. It makes a big difference. (we have the whole shebang, with generator hardwired to its own circuit, so I can have lights, charge the freezer or do a load of wash; but we generally just run the generator for a few hrs a day. We heat with wood, have propane for water & cooking, and gravity-fed municipal water.)

I'm back from the trip to h$ll. Praying hard for those in the path of Irene. Been there hated it.

I am having a well deserved Dewars and water...double. DH should be home in a few minutes and I really missed him.

Good list, Lost_Creek, although I'm scratching my head about the "fresh can of whipping cream."  :)

G'night, all.  Hubs is just about to turn off the Coleman lantern, and my laptop is almost out of electrons.  Stay safe, and see y'all tomorrow!

I too was caught by the "fresh can of whipping cream". But then, without the power on your choices for entertainment are limited and if whipping cream makes life fun, go for it!

On another discussion site folks were talking about their preparations, and in addition to doing the laundry, one person recommended showers/baths for everyone in the household, so at least you start out smelling good!

From the West Coast, night all.

I'd prepare for a power outage by grinding a bunch of coffee beans -- can't function without coffee in the morning!  (During that big blackout in August 2003, I was without power for 3+ days.  I had the ability to brew coffee -- gas stove to heat water, cone-style filter -- but only whole beans.  My friend had no ability to brew coffee, but a pound of ground coffee.  As soon as we figured it out, we got together and had little morning coffee klatsches.  Kind of fun, actually.  Would have been even more fun with whipped cream!)

Oh, and a full tank of gas is a good idea.  I remember being surprised to learn that no power = no ability to pump gas.  (Duh, I know, but who thinks about this stuff?)

I hope that all of you on the east coast stay safe and dry.

There's something delightfully decadent about being without power and having whipped cream in your coffee, or your drink, or on the ice cream that's been melting in the freezer; or to entertain your fur baby.  My dog comes running when he hears the swhoosh of the whipped cream...  Or....

I've been lurking for a while and want to let you know I'm hoping you'll all avoid any harm to yourselves or your property in the hurricane. I'm hoping Irene will lose strength or avoid hitting the coast so no-one suffers.  We call them cyclones in Australia and I lived through many warnings when I lived much closer to the equator in sub-tropical Queensland.

    Good morning all,

Definitely the calm b4 now. this is a very rural area, and I swear better prepared for emergencies than large cities.  So many already own generators, and have organized so everyone knows where to go if need a shower!  Even to having a place where folks can get gas for their power saws.  Seriously, I am in awe, feel blessed, to live in a wonderfully small town. THIS is getting a little scarey tho, I've not been near a hurricane since childhood on the CT shore.

Hope all it's passed are safe.

Well I missed a lot last night.

Innocence and sweetness and light get old when someone has left a trail like the Tasmanian Devil of cartoon fame for a long time under many ids. Sorry if sock puppets were taken away and now there is nobody to play with but there seem to be many people who want to put on a happy face.

We all LEFT THAT THREAD ALONE. Why are we not shown the same courtesy?

As for the review site...Please. The mods posted a link, someone else posted a link and then was mocked for doing so. Nobody here is gullible enough to post it again. AND they've changed the rules there so it is not an unsupervised sandbox.

I don't know why I posted all that, everybody here knows what went on even our sweet innocent visitor.

I would like everybody to be my friend but I don't have friends who I can't trust.

Meant to say -great joke. "truce" - defined as :" I've been as destructive as I can be, opened the barn door, killed all the horses, now would you like some of the extra oats I've got."  This is gonna be an interesting dictionary.

Sorry about the rant when the hurricane is a much more pressing problem than the cloud of gnats that seems to swoop down every once in a while. I really should have just swept them out of the way and moved on.

Power outage advice. If you have a well and no generator to run it, fill the tub with water to use for flushing.Make sure your first aid kit is stocked and there is a flashlight near it.Everything else I can think of has been covered.

ETA: One more thing. Coffee beans can be ground with a mortar and pestle (Ask me how desperate you have to be to find that out.)

Linda, I did get stuck in the great ice storm.  Most of Montreal was without power for two weeks.  I was one of the few people who never lost power.  I had different family members come and live with me until they got their power back.

My daughter is supposed to be going to NY on Monday, but she is putting her plans on hold until we see what happens this weekend.

    I hope everyone is safe.

Sunflowers, I keep wanting to hit the "like" button when I read your posts!

Suhflowers I noticed truce too. Puhleeze,,,",My acts of hostility toward you are done so now I want you to tell me how everything is okay and you love me. Mmm,hmm...just like the abuser after he gave her the black eye."

What was done was not okay and as long as it stays on the internet will not be okay. It was not attacking you or me or this thread but Beastcancer.org, an organization that has helped countless women and probably affecting BCO's ability to attract funding.. I don't see any way to make it right. An acceptance of responsibility would have been a lot better than "what review site"

Sunflowers, aren't small rural communities great that way?   I live in one too.  Yesterday an old friend passed away (ill health & blood clot); today two other friends are going to the hardware store to get lumber and hardware to build "the box".  (over the years, there have been agreements made with counties, health depts, etc.) Another friend will dig the hole in an old gold-rush cem. (locally maintained)  We bury our own, and after the service(s), have a big get-together and celebrate the dear departed.  In our group, 'no one' gets cremated. (not exactly true) but the mountain story is: We hand-dug too many holes before someone could afford a backhoe, and no-one gets away with just using a post hole digger when it's their turn to dig..

Although the "dumb and dumber" among us, was not the main instigator, she did have her hand in the pudding.  The main ones know who the are and so do we!  I really hate them. That's a strong emotion but what they did to me warrants that.  We're going to the Canadian National Exhibition today.  My walk is still not the greatest, but I'm gonna go.

    Please everyone stay safe today!

(((((Blue))))) - hope the venture helps your walk.

Rosemary - motrar & pestle to grind coffee beans.  Oooohhhhh...and I thought I was funky when I don't get my Brown Betty Ceramic Tea Pot filled with steaming green tea!  When we had the ice storm a few years ago- 2 weeks no electricity, in DECEMBER - as soon as the trees blocking my car were removed I DROVE the 10 miles to nearest town to get sterno - so I could make tea.  Only a cup, but learned a LOT about myself.  Laughed at your "mortar & pestle" - somehow, grinding herbs in my little ceramic one will never been the same.  I'll smile thinking of you!!!!

Yes, it was that "oh, what review site" that was just a BOTHER.  "Oh, Bother."  Know she wasn't the main instigator, but didn't seem to need much "prompting" to add her venom.

Lost Creek - YES, to small communities.  Reminds me a bit of what it felt like in the late 1940's and early 1950's in CT where I lived.  Cities since then, and this "returning" even tho I've never lived in this area before, I'm a Connecticut Yankee but still a New Englander ;) and this feels like "Home" with a Capital H.  Also a factor of age, which I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, a Return to Self.

Hope all are staying safe & dry.  Blue, don't let any of this "farce"(thank you Athena, I was thinking SUCH nastier words) get to you!!!!  Enjoy your Exhibition.

    Morning Everyone!

It's cloudy here and the wind has picked up.  Still no sign of rain.  My oak tree is dropping acorns like crazy .. it's raining acorns .. arghh.  I haven't checked the weather to see what the storm is doing.  Hope all in the path of Irene are safe.

Blue .. have a great time today.

Barbara .. glad you made it home!

    hugs,

    Bren

My friend, Melissa, lives in Duck and she posted on FB that a tree fell into her house so sho puts a rain slicker on over her nightgown and out she goes and chops up the part leaning on the house. Pouring rain. I am praying for all my VA, MD, DC, NJ, NY friends! Hoping Mother Nature sees fit to NOT dump tons of rain! Hugs to HL, E, Athena, Ann and anyone else whjo needs them!

On another note, when I got home, I found some icewine waiting for me, courtesy of Ann! What a great pack job! You may recall, in my inimitable stupidity, I had only packed a carry-om bag for NOTL. Now, taking liquid through security is a no no and of course, I had forgotten that until the day before we left. Ann graciously packed the wine and shipped it to me. Thanks ANN!!!

Everyone keep safe and try to stay dry.

Barbara, glad you're home safely - not a time to be in the air - and sorry about your friend.

Airports closed in North East will wreck havoc on air travel from now on.  Just learned my dearest friends are back in Bethesda so am breathing easier now!

my nearest neighbor was out this am, walking around my cabin to figure out the best place for me to put my car.  I can not tell you how blessed I feel to be living here, has restored my faith in humanity, really - living in DC for so long nearly destroyed it :) Bought an all wheel drive b4 moving here, hoping I'd find a place on a dirt road, which I did  - just hope Irene doesn't do tooo much damage.  I really think what's freaked me the most - is getting a robo phone call FROM the electric company warning us - darn, we're supposed to be calling themWink

Barbara, glad you are back and that hell is over....I'm hoping your other prospect turns something up and you find a job you enjoy.

I see that the comedy-farce "OneOfTheChicoes/SpammerGreta-It-Wasn't-Me-SCREEN-SHOT!" on loan from the theatre down the street got mixed reviews last night. I'll tell the BCO B&G box office to plan events in better taste next time. The crowd who comes here doesn't get that drunk!

Blue, enjoy your day and the rest of you in the hurricane path....follow the great advice about coffee beans. Rosemary, I love your posts - it must have taken skill to crush beans the way you suggested.

I am having the second truly lazy day in about eight months. So, so glad that I am deciding to work less. It sort of required giving myself permission and I am like a child in a sandbox, really enjoying it. Next time, when an event like NOTL I will go no matter what.

ATHENA.....fabulous - really up there as one of the BEST, BEST, BEST....we have to add that to the "dictiionary" definition of "truce" - but you forgot " stop picking on me"  -  I really liked that one.

AND THE NERVE, just the NERVE to pretend "innocence" - makes you wonder what makes some people "happy."

Hope your apt is on high ground!

This wind is picking up here .. yikes!  Still no rain though.  Going to be lots of twigs and branches to pick up when this is all over. Oh yeah .. and acorns too.  The chestnut pods are blowing off the trees too.  I hate those pods.  You have to wear leather gloves to pick them up!  They're very spiky, and the spikes go through the leather gloves too.

Hope to hear something about our Libby today.

    hugs all round,

    Bren

PS .. Athena . I hope you don't miss the next get together.  The memories will last a lifetime!
