What a way to have your rights tampered with and coming when you might have really good health insurance etc. If you happen to be too sick, you may end up expendable. Makes you wonder if people really took the time to extrapolate their choices. Did they think others would get the vaccine and then maybe they wouldn't have too. I am going to mention something here and I hope it doesn't offend anyone but I want to just vent about it. I know some people don't have much money but some people act like they ain't never gonna die. I see lots of people posting the upsides of their lives on social media, showing off their new car, motorcycle, new house, posting photos of expensive vacations, sitting in an NFL stadium in their favorite team's jersey, snapping pictures of their latest tattoo or body piercing, spending their weekends clubbing or bar hopping with their friends. Some people of a certain age throw lavish graduation parties and weddings for their kids and then show off the extended family wearing matching pjs around the Christmas tree surrounded by heaping piles of wrapped gifts. And so on and so forth, lots of bragging about all they got.

And then they die and its: Relative of deceased has set up a GoFundMe to cover funeral costs.

That's the part that truly irritates me. Suddenly when faced with paying for a most definite life reality which is death, the family can't seem to scrape together two cents to lay to rest this well-loved relative. It just doesn't sit well with me.

Just 'WOW' on all of the posts since my last one. Divine, I'm with you on the GoFundMe stuff. I recently saw one for a young lady who wanted people to fund her VACATION. WTF! Although I do not feel sorry for the anti-vaxers who get ill or die, I do for their children. I know some 18 year olds who have sneaked out and gotten the vaccine without ever telling their idiot parents. Younger kids don't have that option.

I will never contribute to a "gofund me" especially since they charge a % of funds raised as a fee. One case in NJ turned out to be fraud which involved a homeless veteran who assisted a "damsel in distress" when she ran out of gas and he used his last $20 to help her. Turns out the woman and her BF convinced the vet to participate. Think the damsel and BF got jail time.

One of the biggest misconceptions (ok, outright LIES) about vaccination is that pregnant women shouldn't get vaccinated. Vaccination does NOT cause miscarriages, infertility or pregnancy complications: it helps PREVENT them. COVID kills pregnant women and most often their unborn babies. Some may call what I'm about to say anti-Semitic (and me a "self-hating Jew"), but in large cities like NYC & Chicago, I blame the ultra-orthodox ("Haredi" in Hebrew) and especially Hasidic rabbis (not the Lubavitcher Hasidim, who are enlightened and reach out to the greater community of nonobservant Jews & Gentiles). Those in the Satmar, Bobover, and Skverer sects have been telling young women of childbearing age that vaccines will make them infertile, and thus unable to fulfill the mitzvah (religious duty) to "be fruitful & multiply." (Could be worse. At least our faith doesn't have the concept of eternal Brownie points & demerits, and relegates Satan to, after the Garden of Eden, the status of a very occasional minor foil for God, rather than the powerful opposing force of evil looking for souls to steal. The Jewish concept of "sin" has earthly, not afterlife, consequences).

The 30 nurses who quit their OB unit to protest the vaccine mandate were NOT in NYC--they were in a small county in far-upstate NYS. Just like most of the geographical acreage of even the bluest states, rural=red. (Sorry, Alice--your town in Madison County, IL may have Biden signs, but southern and even most of downstate--and Chicago-exurban--IL is Trumpland). And those rural counties have the highest number of COVID cases, proportion of COVID deaths, the lowest vaccination percentages and fewest available ICU beds.

We have a school nurse (fully-vaccinated) on the "drinking" thread who blames nursing home closures due to staffing issues on Maine's health-worker vaccine mandate--instead of on the stupidity and social-media-addled gullibility of those refusing to get vaccinated because of what they've read online, heard on talk radio or in church, or learned "through the grapevine." Yes, even many nurses (though it's the nursing assistants who are likeliest to be anti-vaxers because they either mistrust a health system that disrespects people of color, or have heard scary disinformation like vaccine records will be shared with ICE and they'll be deported).

As I may have said earlier here (or was it on Facebook?) the language barrier may be hugely responsible for the disinformation reported by Latinx women. Besides the baseless fear of having their vaccinations reported to ICE and getting deported, the most common lie they repeat is that they hear the vaccines contain not microchips but "horse manure." WTF?

Well, the explanation is purely linguistic--and the fault of both Spanish-speaking media and native-Anglophone translators. I forget where it was first reported, but in response to an allegation that the vaccines are harmful, an expert replied "what a load of horseshit." Now, every Anglophone knows that is a metaphor for "nonsense." But "horseshit" is an FCC-verboten word (as is, BTW, "mierda"), so it gets translated as the bowdlerized "horse manure." The problem is that not every language uses the same idioms for a given expression. In Spanish, "horse manure" (estiércol de caballo) may mean, literally, "horse manure" (as in "fertilizer") rather than "nonsense." But an Anglophone non-native-Spanish-speaking translator may never have been taught idioms, much less vulgarities, in Spanish classes. (The only way I know any in French--despite 5 years of study--is from 1960s talk-show guest Genvieve's marvelous little paperback "Merde," which among other things contains expletives and ethnic slurs; and in Yiddish, "drek" does mean "nonsense" as well as "poop". And in Italian, the English "baloney" translates to the lunchmeat sausage and city "Bologna"). So the translator may have unwittingly assumed that both English & Spanish use the same idioms for "nonsense," literally translated--and the non-Anglophone listeners took it literally rather than idiomatically. Complicating matters is that idioms within a given language often vary by country or even region or city.

This is why being a competent interpreter isn't as easy as one might assume.

Love it Ruth. If many of his co-conspirators/lawbreakers have to pay the consequences ( and they will ) the big 'ringleader' should actually go first. It remains to be seen whether h will and what for. It doesn't seem likely to me that he will be held for much account where 1/6 is concerned. I also worry that if they don't do something soon he may be far less able to appreciate finally paying up after a long lifetime of thumbing his nose at laws and norms. In fact, the shock of going to jail would possibly push him far enough over the edge that he would never understand the loss.

Hard for me to understand being so ill an entire lifetime and everyone around you just ignores the whole thing to the point of even encouraging your worst traits.

I would love to see Drumph get subpoenaed to testify in Federal Court for his involvement in 1/6. He wouldn't be able to resist repeating the big lie, and bragging about his people charging the Capitol for him. All they'd need is a prosecutor willing to bait him into it. They could have a full-on "You can't handle the truth!" moment.

Well, I think it is nothing much burger day. I really don't see that much of a statement will be made. It is not 1/6 and the thousands of hours of tapes showing just what DID happen on 1/6 is full testament that those who are locked up are not political prisoners, but traitors that were out for the destruction Trump asked them to commit. Only the hard core could find anything in this -- which is likely what it is for, if not to do some enriching for M. Branyard.

I do hope that we see the day end w/o issues. Those who are in jail will stay there and they will pay for their Jan. activities. Attempts to publicize 1/6 will only prove these people were in the wrong.

Sadly, the 30 year old daughter of a man who dh worked with died from Covid complications a few days ago, 7 weeks after giving birth. She contracted Covid shortly after her baby was born. She was an RN. She also had a seven year old. She spent her younger years in the Ohio Valley and had currently been living in Arkansas where a news station there ran a story about her death, interviewing family members. Not one lamented that the woman hadn't been vaccinated. I am assuming she had not been, knowing her family. There were comments that "she's still with us." Yeah, tell that to her kids. The family wants to "carry on her work, that's what she would want us to do. She's probably upstairs (their description of heaven) laughing about us crying." For the love of God, it's an horrific tragedy! They seemed like they had to make light of the loss! It was like watching a creepy movie. No one talked about how her death could have been prevented.

If there is an afterlife in which one has the opportunity to reflect on how their earthly actions have affected others, I imagine she is in a self-imposed Hell right now. As a mother, I can't imagine dying and leaving young children behind when there was something I could have easily done to prevent it.

That’s one main thing I thought was bizarre about the news story. They were acting like this deceased woman was in heaven focused on THEM, laughing at their tears. Would they not think the mother of a seven year old and newborn was crying her eyes out in the afterlife because her children will grow up motherless? She would know her grown siblings could take care of themselves, as well as her parents, but her young children? Her siblings never mentioned that stark fact of reality and how tragic is it.

I have thought that some of the Trump enthusiasm was waning. Maybe a variety of reasons, but a big one is he no longer has the reach with his social media x'ed. Also, for all these intervening months nothing has really changed. He is no closer to being president then he was election day 2020. I also have said a number of times that he is so dumb about politics ( and no one, including those who do know, can direct him because he knows better ) that he keeps helping the R's lose all the election opportunities since he lost. I'm sure all the Reps. are frustrated and they have been put in the role of having to come up with questionable in your face suppression or laws that may not hold but make them look weak in a maximum way.

Of course, the Reps have been doing major cheats for yrs. and it was enough to keep them being viable and winning at times. Nothing is for sure anymore but I'm irritated to the nth. degree that they will use rigged or some other voter fraud on the part of the Democrats if their 'new' laws don't stand or if they manage to kill off so many of their own that they really don't have close to the numbers needed.

We have our own Democrats ( like Manchin and Sinema ) to worry about and I sure hope they don't present issues at the wrong time.
