I am so hoping the pundits who are predicting a Conservative majority are wrong.  I'll be voting ABC - Anything But Conservative - depending on who is more likely to win in my riding. We would be in sooooo much trouble if Harper gets a majority. Imagine what he'd do to the press if he wins. As it is, they are allowed five questions a day and have been placed behind metal barriers way far from him. Scarey stuff.

This is a re-run, I know... but I never caught on the first time it played.  According to the CBC (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canadavotes/votertoolkit/dictionary.html ):

"Riding (n) a Canadian term for an electoral district. There are 308 electoral districts or ridings. Origin is Scandinavian and Old English. There are two possible histories of the phrase; both traced to Yorkshire in England. One history has the old Norse word "triding" meaning one-third, which evolved into riding over time. Yorkshire was once divided into three administrative divisions or ridings. Also, the Yorkshire custom of "Riding the Stang" meant a person to be held up for public ridicule (especially for wife-beating) was placed on a pole or scaffold ("stang") and carried around to be insulted and jeered. The pejorative term "riding" came to mean rural, unsophisticated, countryside."

Much more fun than "precinct", ... although here in Alabama, a local voting "precinct" is often called a "beat", and the place where you vote within a "beat" is called a "box".  I love these regionalisms.

Otter, love those terms!  Guess I'll be going into the "box" here on election day!

Stands to reason that Canada would have adopted the word "riding" since, back in the day, it was largely agrarian.  We've assumed a bit of sophistication since!

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/01/steven-chu-explains-the-v_n_843684.html

Energy secretary explains assistance cuts to low income households.

"What we're doing is we're looking at those things that are, with a very modest amount of funds, or remodeling funds, you can begin to promote weatherization of homes and buildings. Five billion dollars gets you, what, 750,000 low-income homes, but can you get two billion dollars to now get tens of millions of homes being retrofitted, which becomes highly leveraged. And so, this is what we've found.

"So, we recognize [that] we're looking for programs in this time of austerity, that are more highly leveraged, that will help not only the lowest income people... but also has billions going to the middle income people. There is great opportunity there."

I'm so disappointed in this administration for cutting 2.5 billion from the heating assistance program.  How can the unemployed, elderly and poor afford to heat their homes. Wow .. I wonder how much money I would save on heating costs if my house was retrofitted.  Maybe if I taped plastic over all the windows and doors.  That's what the poor did in Iowa in the small town I lived in.

In my area, 100 gallons of heating fuel is at $355.  That will last one month.  My electric company is raising their rates by 9%.

A big ((((HUGS)))))  to KK for finishing up the WBR.  I hope you are doing okay.

Big ((((HUGS)))) to everyone "celebrating" their canniversay.

As for a marijuana party.  Canada does have a Marijuana Party.  My husband (who does not smoke) voted for this party the last time Chretien ran.  There was no question that Chretien was going to win, but my husband voted a "protest" vote.

With fuel prices what they are, I'm about ready to start a cash crop here in Virginia!  Too bad we don't have a Marijuana Party here.

Did anyone see Dr Oz's show on medical marijuana?  Very polarized audience.  Montel was there passionately advocating for marijuana.

Re our Canadian PM candidates...all of them are arrogant.  But isn't that part of the leadership package?  Without it, the press and public opinion would grind them down in a week.  Count me among the undecided.

Did anybody (in Ontario) get a telephone call recently to join in on a "Telephone Town Hall"?  I did and listened in for about an hour.

Overall, I felt it was worthwhile.  They took questions and gave responses (basically, their rationale behind the initiatives and the success of them to date).  Also ran a few polls and announced results a few minutes later.

Blue, I think you are north of me.

Just back from helping my step mother with her new computer. They had a community yard sale today and navigating the hordes was tricky.

Too lazy to clean out my closet so I think I will go to the pool.

I was a lazy butt this a.m. too.  I did walk the dogs down in the fields, then took my big lab out on the leash.  OMG .. we have 45 mph winds here today .. I was listing sideways on the walk!

Mr. Tim will be home in a few hours, so I better get in gear and get a few things done.  He's so happy he will be home to watch the final four.  Anne ... I think he's cheering for Butler since his beloved Duke got eliminated.

Barbara .. the pool sounds so wonderful.  I wish I was there with you.  This has been such a hard, long winter .. and I am sick of it!!

    hugs to all,

It is WAY too quiet here - not used to having to scroll past the first and second pages of Active Topics to get to us.

How about this - let's have a beauty conversation. I am too embarrassed to go into much detail of my thinking or stress, so I will just touch on the tip of the iceberg:

I am seeing grey hairs and in a panic over it (I'm sorry if this comes across as offensive - the panic is totally unjustified on its face and has everything to do with me and nothing to do with the nature of grey hair, but some minimal disclosure about my feelings over this world-changing event is warranted). I an looking for a product that will cover them all without being a permanent dye. Something like a one- or two-week solutoin. I have very dense, straight, shoulder-length hair that styles easily (dark brown). If I could have something that only eliminated the grey, it would be great. If no such thing exists, then the least "invasive" dye would have to do. I want the minimalist approach - something I can get out of quickly and that does not require too much time, which I don't have.

Any recommendations? Any web sites or tutorials I can take to know what I want?

I want to keep my color, so I am not interested in highlights, glosses, etc...

Perhaps I could stop fretting and concentrate on "inner beauty" (wait - I am paying thousands of dollars a year to straighten that major medical glitch out too) but I would have to be a better person, I'm afraid. So, this being my absolute priority, up there with love and patriotism and duty and honor and health and happiness, I would love any comments.  Wink

Hi Athena.  Hey, who wants grey hairs?  When I first started seeing them, I reached for a henna solution called Colora Henna Creme.  It comes pre-mixed, you just shampoo it in. Pick the colour closest to your own and your grey hairs become instant highlights!  It lasts about 5 or 6 weeks.

You can google it and order via the internet.  It's made in the U.S. (upper NY state, I think).

It's a bright, sunshiny day here in Niagara, and I've been out to see my crocuses bloom, the daffs and hyacinths are budding and it seems the squirrels and chippies actually didn't dig up all those tulips I planted last fall!

I love my grey.  I have dirty blonde/light brown hair - that in between mousy hair color and my grey (actually more of a platinum at this stage) looks like highlights.  My hair dresser even thought I'd been doing highlights at home and asked how I did such a good job.  I know this phase won't last so I'm going to enjoy it while I can.

I do have a beauty problem though - a big one.  I read in another thread here the suggestion to use Kool-Aid as lipstain by applying it with a brush or Q-tip.  Oh my word - burned the heck out of my lips and now I have several cold sores.  I am sensitive so it might not do that to others but just a warning to those thinking of trying.

That's funny that hair dye and Kool-Aid are both being mentioned. My youngest son always uses Kool-Aid to dye his hair!   Sheesh, I had no idea it could burn your lips.

Lindasa, nah not an April Fool's joke, now that I look back the link was to using Jello, not Kool-Aid but I don't think I'll be trying that for awhile either.  I used to have such a good memory now when I don't double check myself I get caught like this.

Athena .. can't help you with the hair color problem.  I'm a natural redhead, and luckily my grey hair is white/blonde.  It looks great and I don't have to color it!  The henna sounds like a good idea.  Maybe use some coffee on your hair since it's brunette.

That's funny about the kool-aid/jello in the kid's hair.  My son went through a phase like that too!

About my son .. on a happy note, he turned in his physics thesis yesterday and defends it on the 15th of this month.  I'm so proud of him.  Being a husband and father of two, it's taken him two years to get his masters done!

Got back a little while ago from getting highlights. My hair is dark brown with some gray so the highlights hide the gray. Every once in a while I get lowlights too so it doesn't get too light. That is semipermenant dye. I don't know what that does to my cancer risk but I am so vain that I don't care. I can't look for cancer bogey men around every corner. I don't want to whine here but cancer has taken enough from me.

A new girl did my hair and she told me it was so soft it kept falling out of her hands. Since I had no hair 3 1/2 years ago and I am on Femara I think my hair is wonderful.

My hair is about 2 inches long and most of it looks like its coming in gray.  Haven't decided what to do yet.  I guess I have a little more time.
