Did someone say "San Francisco"? Here we are giving Cheryl pneumonia by forcing her to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge in the freezing cold!
badger, patoo, sweetandspecial, cheryl, natsfan and me
-
and that could have been in August! :-)
Badger, that does look like LA. Griffith Park maybe? Did you all visit the Observatory? Not my hometown (so I don't know it quite as well as I know SF) but these days I am in LA a fair amount since my grandkids (and daughter and SIL) live there... People from SF don't like to admit this, but secretly I love almost everything about LA, except the Dodgers :-)

The 'flat trail' picture was actually taken on the Double Peak Hiking Trail near Oceanside (which I only know because I put trip notes with the pictures in my photo album). We have been to Griffith Park and the Observatory, but that was a different trip.....actually the trip where we ended up in San Francisco.
-
Ruth, I'd forgotten how cold it was that day!
I was the warmest of the bunch, wearing many layers plus gloves.
Octo, happy August road tripping!
-
yeah, Oceanside makes sense, now that I look closer I think I see the Pacific...Ok, time to make sure the laundry is done for heading out!

We've been everywhere man and if anyone wants to walk across a bridge again just go right ahead and I'll wait in the gift shop, gawd I've never been so sick, it took me months to get over that pneumonia. I also will say that I moaned and groaned on the 'flat' trail walk, up hill anddown dale I think there was only about 200 feet of that trail that was flat - I'm never listening to any of you girls again unless you suggest a spa day
-
LOL, I feel that way about the 'walking tour' (which turned out to be a running tour) in San Antonio. At least I know that if my choice is to jog or be left alone in an unfamiliar city of 2 million people.....I can run.....).
-
And since I am the original AI hot flash girl, note that in the SF pix I'm in shorts and a light sweatshirt and was fine.
-
Wow so much goes on during the week I was three pages behind. Good job ladies!
Cheryl what a sunset! Wow, thanks for sharing. And Heidi, please share gorgeous photos more often. Beyond beautiful. Natsfan also enjoyed the channel island photo. I actually had never heard of them. Sounds like a fascinating place to go - would love to see a 5 lb fox.
Lilac I really want (and need) a scale like that too. I freak about weight gain and never know if its muscle or fat. I have one of those scales that gives you a fat percentage but I'm darn sure now that its just an estimate. I've been frustrated with weight gain this summer - the more I exercise the more I gain. Can't quite figure it out but I am sure it is not all muscle because I see my abdomen expanding.
Thursday I mowed the lawn 38 minutes. Yesterday I walked 55 minutes in total. We have a cold spell here that coincided with our departmental picnic - it was 60 degrees and windy. I was so cold I put together a group to go walking and we walked the loop 4 times just to stay warm! Our picnic was reminiscent of your San Fran pic there without the golden gate bridge. I have never seen an early August day this cold - ever!
Mommyof2, I am so sorry to hear of your recurrence. As you'll note from my signature, I had a recurrence four years ago and so far so good - kicking Cancer's butt!! Not fun, but like the first time you just have to do it! PM me if you need anything.
On the coffee subject they say it is the number 1 source of antioxidants in the America diet. Of course I drank about three cups of coffee for years. What do I see after my recurrence ? FIVE cups of coffee a day prevent breast cancer. Oh there was my mistake - I only drank 3! So yes I don't believe we have to give up coffee, only if you can't ditch the sugar and accompaniments. But tea is definitely good for you and a great addition to our diets too. Probably good to have both.

Walked to Farmers Market this morning and hit the gym this afternoon - 15 yoga stretch and 30 treadmill.
-
Enjoyed catching up with everyone! Like Badger, I also went to our Farmers Market this morning. Bought fresh lima beans, cukes, cantaloupe, french bread, chocolate chip bread, pesto butter, watermelon, green beans. Then went to a new butcher shop in town and bought filet mignon and New York strip. Added tomatoes, okra, and eggplant from our garden, potatoes and onions from last week's visit to the Farmers Market and we had a delicious dinner tonight!
Walked/ran in the afternoon before we ate dinner.
-
Cheryl, great that you bought your UK ticket and YES - TERRIFIC, to seeing and being with you in class, love it!! TwoHobbies, that scale is amazing and showing each body composition change in real time, perhaps to much info, LOL. I've had diep and the way my fat comes back is different particularly around the edges in the places that I've had lipo in my hips. I think my metabolism has gotten used to the upping of daily exercise and has slowed a bit, so I'm looking at ways of kicking it, like adding more protein and always have to watch my carb intake, which I've slacked off on. Spending $299 for a scale, love to, yet that goes along side on the list of my desire for a cordless Dyson V6 animal~sigh.
Baked two coffee walnut cake bases yesterday and froze them. When we had the Pink Pilates fundraiser, my friend who just found out she has a recurrence, she and I said we would bake two cakes each for the Tram Hatch Gardens August 13th fundraiser day. I took my buddy off the baking hook for obvious reasons. Super busy this month, so have to plan my time on baking - two more cakes to bake this afternoon. Must dash, need to shower and on mat at 10am, Pilates at the spa. Enjoy your Sunday everyone!
-
I can't believe that after a super-brutal week of work that I got up at 4:15a to get the ferry and out to cycle the Tour de Lavender which included a 3 hour trip in each direction. But I did do every mile of the Metric Century (100k)!!! I admit to skipping the extra hills and scenic view which this year was of the marine layer. Temps were actually cool, even chilly at times. Taking it easy today where I can clearly see that I dropped everything wherever all week, so some serious tidying-up to do. Have a wonderful Sunday everyone and enjoy the views. - Claire
At the first lavender farm....10 miles down, 50+ to go!!!
This was taken from Schmuck Road!!! Seriously. The cows who live here have the most splendid lives.
Lavender fields from the Jardin de Soliel. The have the most gorgeous ones. The scent is indescribably wonderful.
White lavender too!
Finally, plants from their herb garden. I love, love, love yarrow, whether wild or cultivated. Especially, the pink cultivar.
-
WTG Claire, congrats on the Century ride and beautiful pix.
Scrub & Sculpt this morning incl laundry catch-up. Just pulled zucchini bread out of the oven now roasting two golden beets and a sweet potato. Going to make beets & sweets salad with fresh goat cheese to accompany escalloped potatoes with ham steak for supper.
Will hit the gym this afternoon - before the feast LOL.
-
Claire I bet the lavendar fragrance in the air was beautiful!
Took my son to the airport today. He is traveling to Seattle alone on a plane for the first time. He has only done one airplane ride that he remembers and he is afraid of flying so it made me a little anxious. I decided I better get some stress relieving exercise in so I took my dog for a walk around the lake - 45 minutes.
My son being away for a week will provide an opportunity to get back on a strict eating plan for me. Breakfast/Lunch was an omelette with cheese, tomatillo salsa and avocado. This evening I have cucumber salad, organic cooked carrots and roast chicken and maybe some strawberries for dessert.
-
TH good luck this week sans DS and mmmmm your supper sounds good!
One hour gym - 15 yoga stretch, 15 treadmill, 30 weights.
-
Beautiful pictures, Claire!
I want to come over to dinner with either Badger or TwoHobbies!
Walked, napped, walked again.
-
The escalloped potatoes with ham is from "Our Favorite Recipes" by the ladies of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in West Bend WI. The first printing was in 1949. My copy is from 1990, the 21st printing. I adapted the recipe for the convenience of a pre-cooked ham steak.
Escalloped potatoes and ham
Peel and slice three medium potatoes in a casserole.
Make a cream sauce of the following:
2 Tbsp butter
½ medium onion, chopped
Simmer these two. Then add:
2 Tbsp flour
2 cups milk
1 tsp salt
½ tsp pepper
Cook until thick. Pour over potatoes. Bake 30 minutes at 325 F. Place a pre-cooked ham steak on the top and bake 30 more minutes.
Super easy and absolutely delicious!
-
I love those old church cookbook recipes!
-
Mommy, you will kick this recurrence to the curb, with or without coffee. I agree with the others though that coffee is good for us, also tea (which changes our epigenetics) as TH mentioned and, not to forget, chocolate. Chocolate calms you down when youve overdosed the coffee. I prefer decaf but will still have dark chocolate.
Those body analyzer machines are awesome judging from badgers link. So detailed. But seems to be missing the butt area, where all my fat goes. I have a much cheaper one (less than 50 bucks?) which I bought for DD so she could obsess on muscle as opposed to fat and for me to measure bone weight.
Awesome to have an exercise class reunion, LB and Cheryl. Wonderful sunset pic, Cheryl. Gorgeous ride, Claire.
Yesterday was a gym workout at a hotel spa, a dip in the outdoor pool and a brine steam bath before heading back home with DH.

Good morning ladies. I'm new here. I wish I'd never had to find this site, but I'm thankful for it now and all the helpful education and informationI've received so far. I'm having a lumpectomy August 10. This dx has refocused me on being as healthy as possible.
Yesterday I hiked for an hour, then mostly sat around and didn't do too much all day other than some reading. It was glorious! This morning I'm drinking my super weak coffee while eating cherries. It's raining a bit, but I think I'll head out for an hour or so of walking anyway. I love being out in nature. It's so calming.
I know I need to start doing more with weights and resistance, but goodness, it's so boring to me. I used to do Pilates and yoga regularly and I really loved it. I just got a piyo DVD from beachbody before my dx, but went into shock for a while, which eventually subsided to mere panic, then I was busy educating myself and preparing for what I'm about to face, somthe DVD remains unopened. Maybe after I heal a bit from surgery I'll get it out and give it a try.
I'd like to hear more about the scales that measure body composition etc.. Do they really work and are they terribly expensive? Thanks in advance for letting me join in.
-
Plus I have found that when I feel a migraine coming if I drink coffee, it starts going away. It's funny how they tell you to avoid certain things to prevent migraines but like my mom who used to get vicious migraines, when she had chocolate, cheese or coffee, if I have one of these they go away.
Finally cool enough this morning to workout. So I am going to throw my laundry into wash and then do a workout

Hi Everyone,
I'm up early here in Vancouver where we have been for the past week for my brother's wedding I've been reading your posts and I'm amazed to see how much you've all been together in real time and virtual all these years.
Welcome, Brightness45.
Mommyof2, I am so sorry to hear of your recurrence. I hope that things go smoothly and you have help as you need it.
Today is wedding day. Here is a photo of myself, DH, and our three kids from yesterday's rehearsal luncheon.
I'm so relieved to have recovered from the DIEP surgery so that I could make the trip from NY. My brother loves to plan events for large groups of people. He's a neurologist but could've easily been a trip advisor or a wedding planner!
-
Ohh, Falconer, you look absolutely fabulous as does the rest of your family - thank you for posting this photo - beautiful! Brightness45, welcome the scale I put up https://shapescale.com/# is not on the market yet. Since you enjoy yoga & Pilates, take some classes and revel in it for now - do what you like and go for it. Nice photos Claire and can smell the lavender. KB870, no keeping you down. In August, the Boy Scout hall we meet in closes so we have a walking group and for an hour with we walked around a local lake - Conningbrook Lake
It was a 5000+ step walk (never need to buy a fitbit, everyone around me has one). Off to Body Balance tonight. Have a good, active start to the week everyone!
-
Welcome, Brightness!
KB870, toenails came hurt a lot!
I would love to be walking at your lake, Lilac!
Falconer, that looks like a Christmas Card picture to me. Beautiful!
I walked half an hour this morning, napped for awhile this afternoon & took Stella for a grand-dog walk this afternoon. She is now sitting here chewing on an old shoe ( a definite 'no no' at her house, but grandmas get to spoil, right?). Tomorrow starts week three of post-surgery recovery so I am expecting to get a little of my 'zip' back!
-
Great family pic, Falconer. That is a really cool, "body scanner" LB, and a beautiful lake. TH, will post more pics from my phone.
Rest day yesterday.
-
Good morning. I ended up walking twice yesterday to try to get rid of stress. I didn't eat as healthy as I should have, so today I need to watch it. My surgery is in a few days and my stress and fear is taking over. I'll probably walk again later this morning. Hopefully that will help.
What are others planning for ahealthy day?
-
I am going for a walk in 5 minutes. Moving (and eating......so it's lucky I move!) is how I deal with stress too. Hang in there, Brightness, the waiting around is the worst part!
-
Welcome Brightness! You've found the best thread on BCO. Walking is a wonderful antidote to pre-surgical jitters. Falconer - great picture. Love the head of curls on the little one! Beautiful lake, Lilac. Ruth, when will your surgeon clear you to rejoin your walking group?
Some sad news - one of my SIL was just dx with ovarian cancer. They know it's at least Stage III, and she's having surgery Friday which will determine whether she's Stage III or IV. She's being treated at an NCI certified cancer center so at least we know she's getting the best care there is. We just had dinner with her and her DH when we were in CA last month. I hate cancer.
40 minute dreadmill run this morning. LE MLD ( manual lymph drainage) therapy session scheduled for this afternoon.
