Peregrine, thanks for the recommendation for walking shoes. I will check them out. I love to order from Zappos because they are so good about taking shoes back if the do not fit.

Hooray Brightness!!! Ruth - love the "we can walk" friend pic - I tend to be that way, I admit. Welcome, Peregrine - you've had a nasty couple of years! Glad things seem to be settling down for you finally. Mommy - listen to your DH and take it easy on yourself. Octo - your planned cabana day sounds like the perfect solution. Welcome Zogo!

Coffee - if you haven't done this already, it may be worth it for you to go to good running store and get fitted by an expert. Most sell more than running shoes - they sell cross-training, walking, and trail running. They also can help fit you with supportive insoles. It'll be spendy (probably 100+) but they should work for you. One trick I've learned - running shoe companies release new versions every year. When I find shoes that I like, I start doing a google search for that version about 6-9 months later when the new versions come out. Just like with cars, the previous year's version goes on sale when the new ones come out and the manufacturers sell to discount retail and online stores. A year ago I lucked out and found 2 pairs on line in my size at half the price I'd paid the year before. I snapped those puppies up as quickly as I could! I usually "retire" my running shoes when they have about 300-400 miles on them, then I use the retired shoes for walking. I also like Merrells, and I have Columbia hiking boots.

    40 minute dreadmill run.

Coffee, what kind of shoe you need will depend on why & what part of your feet are hurting. I had an awful case of tendinitis last year & the PT recommended ASICS Contend 3 as a good exercise shoe & also Vionics for daily wear shoes & sandals. I switched over and me feet have been great ever since (if anyone needs some very nice Nike Pegasis size 9.5 let me know.....those were my 'go to' shoes for years). It was expensive to change out all the shoes, but very worth it. Another thing is to not try to make a shoe last longer, as soon as your legs start to hurt, switch them out. And another is to try some Dr. Scholls inserts; the ones at Walmart where you stand on the machine & it will evaluate your foot & tell you what level you need.

Peregine, I am an old middle school (6th-8th) teacher! Title I Reading should be a much less stressful job; small groups & one-on-one. It should actually be more fun than work! My DS, who lives in town, has a little mini-schnauzer, Stella, who is my great buddy. I dog nap her almost every day for a walk & some hanging out time.

Octo, sign me up for the cabana and lazy river! Sounds perfect!!!!

Hi Zogo, glad to see you over here.

Well, I had a little extra excitement this morning. I was walking over a bridge and some bees swarmed out and started stinging me on the ankle. OUCH!!!! OUCH!!! I iced the area and took some Benedril. It still hurts though so I am sitting here feeling sorry for myself.

My feet hurt for a long time and I finally went to a podiatrist/ orthopedic doc. I have plantar fasciitis, a pinched nerve, something called functional hallux rigidus and an achilles issue. He made me some custom inserts that I wear daily now. Slowly getting better.

man, you ladies not only exercise a lot, but u are all very chatty (in a good way!) My apologies if I miss someone....

Brightness, so awesome about the nodes! That has got to be a big weight lifted!

Mary, the letrozole is such a small pain, but I wish it didn't make me so stiff. I'm sure if I got my diet under better control it would help. Goodbye sugar. I gotta keep saying cancer loves sugar.

Badger and zogo, are you guys in Wi? I grew up in Appleton, went to UWmad, and I'll be dropping DS in MKE for college in 2 weeks. I miss WI!

RE: foot and shoe issues. I'm a PT so I have an opinion, I always do!LOL

If you know a PT or podiatrist who specializes in biomechanics, it's worth a visit for them to evaluate your walking mechanics. You may need orthotics etc, but frequently you may also have strength deficits and tightness. I found that with 4 surgeries in the last 8 months that I spent so much time sitting with lifting restrictions that my core is very weak, and my butt muscles are toast. That and lowered estrogen make me feel really old!

I am actually considering a few visits to a PT to help with the areas I cannot reach.and I never ask for help!LOL. Plates and yoga are great, and usually you can find an instructor or videos that give modifications to the intended exercise. They both serve different purposes. I like Stott Pilates.tai chi is also good. Heck, any moving is good!LOL

Perigrine, I work as a PT in the schools. It really is mentally taxing working at school. I'm trying to set up a schedule now, before school starts so I can workout after school, and not stay and work late like I always do. I hope you can make it work to prioritize your health while still doing a good job. I'm going to try to give 95% this year rather than 110%.

Ruth. Hope your bee stings feel better soon!

If it stops raining I will go walk. There is a deer in my neighborhood (we have lots of deer and coyotes) that has been a bit aggressive toward me as I walk. Usually they run off, bit this one puts her head down and paws the earth.they are so obnoxious ! I guess I shouldn't let a deer stop me!

Keep up the good work. And thanks for pushing me along!

you guys made me walk tonight, thanks! I did 30 min, then ran into a neighbor and walked another 30min on hills with her. I almost got to 10,000 steps!

Zogo, DS is going to MU, we are in western NY, so it's a 12 hr drive. Yup, pretty far from home, but he wanted a change. He likes the Midwestern vibe. But he will have a change being in a noisy city. We live in a semi wooded area, birds, deer etc.

Mommy, glad your leg is feeling better!

Ouch, Ruth! Hope bee stings are better now. I admire you for teaching middle school.
6th grade was old enough ( and hormonal enough) for me. I think it will be fun working with primary age kids with reading.
Good idea, 2FUN, to make a schedule. I am going to try and leave by 3:30 every day and exercise between 4:00 and 5:00. I might join a gym, too.
Walked about 4 miles today, including some on sand, which uses muscles I forgot I had.

hi all and welcome zogo! I've had sore feet since chemo and only wear athletic shoes.

2FUN, I'm in southwestern WI, in the beautiful Driftless region, and work in Madison.

((M0mmy)) congrats on getting through that first chemo. What regimen are you on?

Ouch Ruth on the killer bees. My mom's home remedy was baking soda paste. [And she was right! Per heathline.com: A paste made of baking soda and water can help neutralize bee venom to reduce pain, itching, and swelling. Apply a thick layer of baking soda paste to the affected area. Cover the paste with a bandage. Leave on for at least 15 minutes and re-apply as needed.]

Octo, poolside cabana vacay sounds divine!

Walked at lunchtime, gorgeous day. Had supper with mom tonight so a long day, workout tomorrow. TGIF!

Read this article yesterday. Get your Zumba on, ladies!

6 Iranians performed Zumba. Then they were arrested.

By Amanda Erickson, WaPo, August 10, 2017

If it weren't so sad, it would be funny.

Six people — four male and two female — were arrested in Iran for teaching Zumba, a Colombian fitness routine, and other "Western" dance moves. The six filmed themselves and posted the clips on social media apps such as Telegram and Instagram.

"The members of a network teaching and filming Western dances have been identified and arrested," Hamid Damghani, a Revolutionary Guard Corps commander in northeast Iran, told Jamejam Online.

Their crime, he said, was seeking to "change lifestyles and promote a lack of hijab." In Iran, women are required to wear headscarves and modest clothing in public. Women are also banned from dancing in front of men who are not from their immediate families. Authorities have forbidden the teaching of Zumba and other dances, even in women-only gyms. "The promotion and teaching of dancing in the name of sport in women's gyms is a serious issue," Damghani said.

This isn't the first time authorities have cracked down in this manner. In 2014, six Iranians were arrested for making a video that showed them dancing to Pharrell Williams's "Happy." The young men and women were sentenced to a year in prison and 91 lashes, though both punishments were ultimately suspended. The video caught the attention of authorities after it became something of an online sensation, garnering 1 million views in six months.

In June, authorities announced that Zumba was banned. "Any harmonious movement or rhythmic exercise, if it is for pleasure seeking, is haram," cleric Hossain Ghayyomi explained to the Los Angeles Times. "Even jobs related to these rhythmic movements are haram. For instance, since Islam says dancing or music is haram, then renting a place to teach dancing or cutting wood to make musical instruments is haram too."

As is so often the case when it comes to policing how women act, part of the concern stems from how men will respond. According to the Times, religious leaders worried that Zumba could corrupt Iranian men. They've even deemed online videos teaching the dance pornographic. (Conservative Muslim leaders in Malaysia, for example, have issued a religious edict against Zumba.)

Iran's ban on Zumba has infuriated many women in the country. "Unbelievable," Zumba teacher Sepideh Abozari told the Times. "The authorities are worried about a Zumba pandemic?"

"Even in low-income areas on the outskirts of Tehran where I live … women pay as much as a month cash subsidy to participate in Zumba class to keep fit in body and mind and tune in to the happy rhythm," Abozari said.

Did a 5K treadmill run and some weight training yesterday. Am trying to learn how to do Thai yoga massage and experimenting on DD who loves it. It is a workout.

Just added this to my favorite topics! Was so tired from rads then read this and pushed through to exercise yesterday and after an hour or two the fatigue lifted and I felt great! Working full-time, going to rads and then trying to get in exercise is a full plate. Not doing much around the house, but it will always be there. Going to buy new running shoes today and will break them in later.

My exercise yesterday was around my oncology appointment and subsequent celebration. I took the afternoon off and bussed it into Seattle. This meant walking up Capitol Hill to my health center, and then of course back down once finished. All was fine, so see her again this time next year. I did over 5 miles altogether. Could see the impact of all my training climbing Capitol Hill.

I think I may have convinced two of the staff that they needed more exercise as much fitter (and have a better shape too) than they are! Their jaws dropped when I told them about the distances I cycle. I also mentioned it's because I love to eat.

I stopped in at the Nordstrom Flagship store where I got a couple of YSL makeup items, and by the resale shop where I didn't find anything that would improve my life. Just fine as my score on my last visit more than makes up for everything.

Finally, the wine bar where I met my friend Dan and shared a bottle of Blanc de Noirs to celebrate. We also shared a cheese and a cured meat platter. Delish. I stayed for the first set of music, but the best I can say is that it was "live". Whiny vocalist. Geez.

On the bus back, I got chatted up by a much younger fellow cyclist who is looking for a cycling partner? Or so he says. Checking out his Facebook, I am suspecting a tiff with his girlfriend. But it's nice to know that I've still got it Smile

Back on the bike today, a visit to the farmers market, and a spot of work. It's finally cooler here, not to mention much less smoky air.

    The celebration continues..... - Claire

Congratulations Mary & Claire on your checkups. Yes, indeed, we've all still got it!

Welcome soon2beretired! The best thing for radiation fatigue IS exercise!

Even though I iced, elevated, baking sodaed my stings (they are wasp not bee stings & since the swelling has gone down a little I can see I have at least 6 punctures!), I was so miserable that I took one of the pain pills they had sent home with me from the hospital (since I had taken ZERO of them post surgery, you know how rotten I felt!). I am still pretty swollen up today but, since I didn't think I would actually make anything worse, I took an extra strength tylenol, put on some walking sandals (I don't think my foot would fit in a tennis shoe) and went for a walk. I will just have to wait it out. Sadness!

Sounds like you may be a bit allergic with the swelling, Ruth. Might wantto keep Benadryl on hand. Good for you to walk it out!

if you don't have Benedryl, or don't like the sleepiness, take another antihistime, like Zyrtec, or claritan or the like. it will make a significant difference in teh swelling , but you wont have the extra stuff the pain meds have that you dont need.

Since this is the exercise thread, I have an idea for Eclipse Monday.

What about having a "Made in the Shade Virtual 5k Run/Walk". We all do 5k on our own time, wherever we are, and report back. Extra points if we can post pix of the eclipse. It doesn't have to be the total eclipse, because that is a relatively small number of people, but just a picture of some of the sun blockage.

    Anyone else in???? - Claire

    hi all and welcome soon2bretired!

OMG Ruth six wasp stings is a LOT. Agree about possible allergic reaction.

Claire, I like the idea of a virtual 5K. I'll be in Madison that day with a partial (85%) eclipse peaking around 1:15 pm. Will have to see what my schedule allows between noon and two.

    85 mins gym this afternoon - 30 treadmill, 40 weights, 15 yoga.

Caprese salad for supper with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil mmmmm.

Claire, that's a cool idea. I haven't paid any attention to the eclipse timing here in ny. Will have to look unless anyone can tell me? I have physical therapy from 10-11, so my 5k will have to follow that appt.
Went to yoga class for the first time since the DIEP. Ah! So good to be back!

Ruth, hope the swellling's gone down!

Welcome to all the newbies this week.

Ruth, sorry about the wasp stings right when you are recovering. Octo I hope you get some good relief from your surgery. Healing power to Brightness and Mommyof2 today.

I had sort of overheard about the upcoming eclipse, but really not prepared for any viewing or fun related to it. Since no National holiday has been declared, it seems I will be at work. It looks like we will have a little more than 87% of an eclipse here - not sure of the time. If I bought my glasses and took off work, I guarantee we'd have clouds!

The week without feeding my son and therefore myself went well. I lost 2.4 lbs. I'm hoping to stay on track even though I will be lucky to lose 1 pound per week after the first. We've had pretty pleasant weather so I was able to walk 30 minutes at lunch three days this week. Today was lawn mowing- back and front - so it took about 65 minutes and then vacuuming three rooms and carpet cleaning one. Not really any fun in that. Going to lunch with friends in the morning and have to pre-plan my breakfast selection. Nighty night all.
