Found an interesting website for a Dr. McDougall; he advocates for a vegan vegetarian diet as a method to minimize many of the health problems that plague our culture.  It has some good free info/recipes too.  http://www.drmcdougall.com/medical_nutrition.html

I have been a vegetarian for over 2 years but I would like to get to vegan.  I read that people who have had heart attacks can repair their hearts by eating a vegan diet, exercising, abstaining from tobacco and alcohol.  I gave up meat when I decided if I couldn't kill an animal for food I shouldn't be eating them.

I have been chewing sugar-free gum like crazy to keep from eating.  What I want to know is why it takes about 5 minutes to eat something decadent and 12 hours to work it off.  It doesn't seem equal to me.Kathleen

    Morning ladies...

I had my #11 Rad this morning which means I am ONE THIRD done with Rads...YEAHHHH...so to celebrate I took Roxy for a long walk this morning...it was great to get out there in the cool fresh morning air...

Roxy smelled every bush and had to lick every other walker who walked by us...I took a bottle of water with me just in case Roxy got thirsty...although I drank most of it...

    Looking forward to a great weekend...enjoy ladies!!!!Cool

    Good morning all,

It was a beautiful day here yesterday too and I spent hours planting all my annuals and tomatoes and weeding. We are expecting a frost overnight tonight!!!! PLEASE it's June tomorrow! Where is the global warming??? I will have to cover up my plants tonight. I guess I'll consider it more exercise.

While DH was away I ate a spartan diet so hopefully that will make up for the couple of drinks I had with him when he got home last night??? I'm making a low fat pasta dish tonight. I'll be eating shirataki noodles. They are very low in calories and I don't mind them so I think it's a great substitute for higher calorie pasta. My husband thinks they are disgusting, and refuses to eat them, he is also very thin and can eat whatever he wants. I think for the calorie exchange they are very satisfying, and practically carb free so they fit with my diet.

Cruise Tomorrow is weigh in day for me, June is going to be a great month!

What I like to do for a pasta substitute is use zucchini.  I julienne the zucchini and some onion.  Put a little olive oil on a cookie tray and broil for about 5 minutes.  With sauce over them they taste great.

Well, I had my weigh in tonight and I've lost 2 and 1/2 lbs.  Another 1/2 of a lb. and I'll be back to where I was pre chemo.  yeah.  I was so great to be active this weekend.  Of course, today I'm paying the price.  I feel like I've been beat all over.  But, I'm not complaining.  Not much any way.

Hi all: Well, my weight went down .5 lb, then back up 1.5, after I thought I was doing well! Have been walking every day (except today--first day of radiation after a long work day. Had to wait 1.5 hours for my turn since the machine was down). Hope to get home in time to walk tomorrow.

I don't know if I could go vegan, but I'm going to cut way back on the meat. Never was a big red meat fan, but did eat more during chemo. I've heard that eggs are good during radiation, and I usually don't eat them due to high fat. But maybe I'll have a few a week. I've bought some almond milk to use with my cereal (and a little bit nonfat milk).

The zucchini pasta sounds great. Also spaghetti squash looks like the real thing! (sorta)

Good luck to all. Here's to healthy eating and living!

I agree that Deb's zucchini "pasta" recipe sounds great! I saw this cool device that cuts spaghetti-shaped zucchini; have to look for that again.  My wt. was way up last week, but I think it was partially due to swelling.  I'm going back on my detox diet so hope that will get me back down in the 150s - - goal still 140's...  I haven't been perfect on this detox thing, but it's still a cleaner diet.  Best to all. -c

    Hi everyone,

I should have lost 10 pounds after all the garden work I did this weekend and yesterday step class and then a night of golfing (took a cart though it's a hilly course and it was at the end of the day) oh by the way didn't lose 10 pounds, no surprise!

Debonthelake Good on you! Wow, you've done a great job!

Cruise  Official weigh in 209 UGH I'm sure the doctors scale is horibly off! Or maybe it's the weight of my hair, okay it can't be that. It must be my big rear end! I'm committed and the exercise part is going well. I thought the eating part was going well too, but maybe I'm eating too much???? The nurse was really nice and saying things like you know it's the middle of the day and blah blah blah. She tried, but I know it's my big bottom.

I think I'm going to call the woman at my gym who measures metabolism. I'd like to get an idea of how many calories I need in a day. I thought I had it figured out, but the weight is not dropping off. I don't want to go too low because that's bad too. I guess it's all a process....

I'm off to pack some lo cal snacks for the car trip. Keep up the good work everyone! Pretty soon no one will see us if we turn sideways!

Way to go DEB....2 1/2 pounds is awesome!!!!!!

Barbie...okay...we are very close in weight.  I bought some books on metabolism...I will share if there is anything earth shattering...and FYI...I get weighed on Thursdays...with the same scale and in the docs office around the same time..after RADS....

Cruise4life I haven't started rads yet. Is it ok If you loose weight when on rads? Or do you just have to do it slower?

I started weight watcher 2 weeks ago lost 6.2 still not down to my pre cancer weight. My weight keeps fluctuating up and down. Hopefully the WW will keep me on track...before I have to do something drastic like taping my mouth shut. Laughing

Like the vegie noodle idea, much better than the brown rice pasta i've been getting.

    Hi Ladies...

Kathy...regarding your question above...I do know they measure you and don't want you to lose too much weight...but I think if you do rads for 7 weeks that a gradual loss wouldn't be an issue.  I know they want you to eat to keep your strength up as you do get fatigued with Rads too...Great job losing 6.2 pounds...that is great and seems a little fast but it could be water weight for most of it.

Barbie..I weigh tomorrow...crossing my fingers for at least one pound or two...LOL

ikat, I didn't have rads, but I know they don't want you to lose weight after you've been tattooed because the tattoo positions will change and they have to keep remarking you or they might not zap the correct spots.  Check with your rads onc.  You might have to just maintain until rads is over.  That would be sad as you're having really good weight loss now.

I talked to my Rad Onc about wt. loss before beginning tx; I'm pretty tall so can carry a fair amount of wt.  But he actually wasn't concerned about loss unless I was talking losing 20% of body wt.  He was OK with me eating healthier - - of course, I'm still about the same wt as when I started...

So far, so good with Weight Watchers. I'd lost almost 30 pounds 6 years before cancer. Then after surgeries, recovery, loss of activity, and just plain comfort eating, I gained half of it back. Knowing I would be going through it again this year, I had to find a way! So joined WW (at recommendation of dh who has been doing it for years), lost it (and more--now down 35 pounds from original weight), and am a lifetime member. It is 11 weeks since my last surgery and still able to maintain. Another surgery to go, but hopefully WW is my final answer.

    Way to go Sneakie pie.

I'm hoping to be a life time member by the end of June.  I'm down 20 pounds from where I started about a year ago.  I'm hoping to drop another 5 pounds.  The guidelines for cancer prevention are pretty tough.  They suggest a BMI of 21 to 23.  That's pretty thin.  I'm plugging away.  So far this week I've exercised every day except Monday.

    Great work Cruise,

My weight came off really slow 1/2 of a pound at a time.  But, it did come off.

Cruise and Fimi thanks for the information. I will loose before I get tattooedLaughing

sneakpie I am hoping that WW is my final answer too!  Down another 2.4 this week.  I have a long way to go before I can get to that suggested BMI. Thanks for the information Debonthelake  I didn't know the BMI was so low.

    Cruise great loss this week.

I love this successful group! Yeah for you all! I always feel so inspired and encouraged.

Cruise Wow, that's great!  I'm nervous about Monday weigh in, but I've been careful all week and I will try to be careful over the weekend. It's a lot harder with drinks at hand, and in hand and dinner parties but I'll do my best!

Feeling good, stronger and more able to exercise but I've got to be careful that I don't eat more. It seems like my body likes the weight I'm at and tries to keep me here. I increase the exercise my body craves more food. I'm trying to pacify it with veggies so hopefully the scale will keep getting lighter and lighter.

    Hi everyone, checking in.

Everyone sounds like they are on the right track!  Keep up the great work!

I'm trying to do Weight Watchers but really hate keeping track of points.  I've had a successful week, though and have lost 3 pounds.  Although I'm not really a vegetarian, I ate a vegetarian diet this past week (well, okay I did eat some grilled chicken breast once) and low and behold 3 pounds are gone!  I'm going to continue and see what happens!!

    Wow,

It sounds like there is a lot of success here.  Jan 3 lbs. That's great.  It's amazing how filling up on veggies helps out.

Have a great weekend everyone.  It's summer and I'm going kayaking with my DH in the morning.  Summer is great on the lake.

    Hi Everyone,

We had a little dinner party last night and the margarita's kept coming. Yes, I confess I had two, but DH makes them with only tequila and Grand marnier and lime juice so there's not all the extra calories in a mix. Does that sound like rationalizing???? I made a great yogurt dip for veggies and shrimp and I even put some low fat cheese on the cheese platter.  Oh and yes fruit salad for desert! Hopefully that balanced the "alckeehaul".

I cleaned the house all day in between cooking and prepping so I was on my feet most of the day. Boy were my tootsies sore last night, my feet looked like sausage. I think the circulation is still not good because of the chemo. I was going to do a bunch of things today, but I'm going to try to stay off my feet and rest to prepare for the week ahead.

Jan Great 3 pounds, I hope I didn't find them!

Debonthelake I hope you had a great day

Cruise tomorrow is weigh in day, I'm hoping for the best??????

Keep up the good work ladies!

Barbiedahl: that's not rationalizing, that is being realistic.  There has to be some balance in this life and if you want to have some margaritas with DH and friends then just make them as low cal as you can--which you did.  (But had to LOL thinking of grand marnier being considered lower cal, like the way you think).  So just don't let yourself "cheat" today.  And make yourself exerciese (even if you have a hangover Smile).  But for goodness sakes take that time with family and friends to enjoy life to the fullest after what you've been through to keep it.

Hi everyone! I haven't had much to say but I've been checking in periodically, and it's great to see that all of you are so motivated and that you are making progress (even a bit of exercise is progress, whether or not the scale has shown results).

I have been trying to track my calories on Livestrong.com.  I went over a few times this week (dinners out with friends), and last weekend I was away and didn't have access to my computer for much of the time.  But at least I'm holding steady.  I took an aerobics class yesterday, and today I did some weight machines and about 20 minutes on the elliptical.  Once again, I weighed myself after I peed, took off my shoes, socks, and t-shirt -- and I was down to 150.5, a whole half pound lighter.  I just want to get below that 150 mark, I feel like I am stuck!

I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend -- here in the Northeastern U.S. it is a beautiful day!

    Hey thin girls,

I did pretty well over the weekend, or thought I did. The doctors scale had me up in weight! Say it ain't so. It must be awesome muscle gain. yeah, right. Well, I'm eating well, exercising and that's all  I can do so I'm going to stay on track and hope for the best!

Yeah to all the losers I hope to join you, maybe next week????

    Hi Ladies...

Do not fret Barbie...I had some wine and steaks yesterday...lets say lots of wine...so the scales on Thursday may not be nice to me.

My DH is going in for a colonoscopy tomorrow and all he can have today is clear liquids...I should join him in the PITTY PARTY....and maybe the scales will be good for me...LOL

Keep up the great work..to those who are trying and to those who are winning with weightloss......YEAH!!!!!
