Crafts after BC is good for the soul

Speaking of coloring in a color book, one of the programers who work with me just became a first time daddy and I made him a beautiful baby quilt that matched the theme of his son's bedroom (circus). I gave him the quilt last week because his baby was due any time and I didn't want to miss giving it to him before the baby was born. I took a piece of clip art, traced it on white muslin with a perm pen and colored it with colored pencils to make the quilt label. After heat setting the picture on the fabric, I sewed it on the quilt as the label. He marveled how I got the personalized label to go on the quilt with the mother, father, and son's name on it. It was the first time I made a colored label but the ladies in my quilt guild all said that it will last through washings after I heat set it. He was so proud of that quilt I think he showed it to everyone in the office. I didn't find out that he displayed it all over the office until this week, when somebody else mentioned that they saw the quilt I made for the baby and it was beautiful. For me it is normal to make quilts for new babies, I think that all new babies need a personal quilt.

Lefty...thank you for the idea. I hadn't thought about printing out another coupon and draggin DH along. I'll be sure to tell him one of my new friends gave me the idea
And I am all about stimulating the economy (at least that is what I keep trying to tell my DH). -
I think this is so true! I am a ten year survivor and after thinking about it for ten years, I finally wrote a book. This book is a positive, humorous, serious look at cancer, but you are right it kept me, my hands and my soul busy. I wrote it because I wanted to give back to help others with a positive attitude and a new way to deal with your spirit and your emotions. The book is entitled: "Mirror Makeovers and savvy insights for the everyday gal surviving cancer and baldness with a sense of humor." I think you will really enjoy it. It is not just for gals that have lost their hair but a way to look at life that is honest and to the point. I also wrote and directed a music video. This video was done by cancer survivors for cancer survivors. The two leading actresses, along with the support group, down to the producer and the director (me) are all cancer survivors! It is a positive outlook on friendship, support, moving forward and giving back. I hope you will take a second to look at the book and the video, I am positive you will not be sorry. The book is posted on my website at: www.QuietAngelPublishing.comand the video is currently on YouTube and the link is: http://www.YouTube.com/watch?v=9choRJAmoYA please take a look and pass it on to others so that it might help with everyone's spirit and let me know what you think! But it has been food for my soul!!

Asurvr....
My daughter suggested that you go to the cricuit website and read the discussion boards, the women on there are a wealth of information. She has never done the glass, but thought it looked interesting.
Thanks for the welcome! I have read for a while now and love looking at all of your pictures. My mother has tried about every craft that is out there. I just remember my childhood with something new going on in our house. She is 82 now and still works in stained glass and takes watercolor classes. My front walkway is lined with the stained glass garden stones that she made. She made the state flowers in glass from every state in the United States. So as you can see crafting is in my blood. I have dabbled in alot of different things and finally have become a quilter. It is something I will stick with forever. I always have something going, right now I am working on my daughters wedding ring quilt. She is getting married Saturday, and as usual it is not finished. But sometimes breast cancer gets in the way!!!!!
I read a few posts back that someone was trying to get a quilt done by Christmas. My only suggestion is be ok with not making your goal. I made my future son in law a wall hanging for his birthday in April. He saw the pattern on his birthday, and every time he came over he would go in my sewing room and check on the progress. I finally gave it to him at the end of my 7 week radiation trip, which was in June. He loved it! He knew the road I was on and appreciated it even more. Sometimes life happens!!
I will keep visiting and love all your creative ideas!!!
Take Care., Laura

About setting goals for quilts, I started a paper pieced wall hanging of bright colored 1930's repo print Easter eggs in Feb 2007. I wanted to get it done by Easter. I finished up the quilting this past March but cannot find the fabric I cut for my binding. I always said I never said what Easter I was going to have it finished by! My goal is to find the binding fabric and have it ready by 2010 to hang in my office. Like you said Laura, the BC got in the way of finishing that sooner.

Ladies - pictures please! All these things sound so beautiful so take a picture and share it!
Asurvr - when we were collecting the Halloween village pieces at Michael's we had the whole family going in with 50% off coupons!
Arnie - i have to get off line - I can use both hands to type but I think it is too much work for the left shoulder as it is really hurting. I'm going to go take Percoset. I am so glad you are on the mend.
Lucy - I got your PM - I will call tonight!
Love to all my fellow crafters!

Ok... still have to polyurethene it but this is the Santa stocking holder... it's hard to see in this pic but there are 4 white pegs on the sides that hold the stockings... dd loves it...so that's good.

-
OMG, soooo cute. You are so clever. I can hardly draw a straight line with a ruler.
-
That is cute. I wish I had one of those when my son was a child, we had to hang the stockings on the entertainment center around the TV with masking tape!
I am a little sad this morning. I had to put my basset hound down. She was between 9 and 10 yrs old and developed a ruptured disk in her back yesterday that affected her hind legs. We got her in 2002 as a rescue and she was a very loving dog.

Ohhhhhhhhhh Ivtwoqlt... I'm soooooooo sorry. It's so hard to lose a beloved pet...we have many animal grave statues in our backyard...I miss them all. (((((((((((hugs)))))))))) janet
-
Do you know about Rainbow Bridge for pets that have passed? My sister just added her beloved Autumn Snow, grand champion Samoyed.
-
I wish I could have brought her home but I couldn't dig a large enough hole for a 57 lb dog. I let the animal hospital bury her in the communal grave. We are going to make a memory stepping stone for her to go in the flower bed.
I told my husband about the rainbow bridge this morning, he didn't know about it. I am going to take a picture of her to the groomer to put on her wall of loved pets who have crossed the bridge. Penelope was too big for me to try to give her baths and trim her nails so I took her to Teresa's shop every 3 months.

Gentle hugs to you. Sheila........it is always sad when we have to put our fur babies down......Sorry to hear, sweetie......
Arnie, love the stocking holder...It is nothing what I imagined when you said you were making it..LOL...I pictured something small that you put on the mantel......Thank you for the poem on the housework thread.....I called you a little while ago...Guess you are at work.......If you see MD Emmons it is not a doctor.....It is my DH's initials..LOL I WISH he was a doctor!......LOL
Anyone know someone having a baby girl I have an extra pair of pink booties made.....Don't know how that happened because I usually only make them per request......
Spar i mailed your surprise yesterday!...Hope you like it....I love my necklaces you made me....
happy crafting ladies.....
-
Absolutely beautiful ivorymom! When winter comes...maybe I'll try one of these out.
-
lvtwoqlt: We spoke before about our mutual love of basset hounds. I am so sorry about your baby. It is so hard to lose them. They take a piece of our heart with them. May you find peace in all the happy memories you have.

-
lvtwoqlt, I am so sorry for your loss. We have had a pom for 9 years now. I can see she is starting to really age and it breaks my heart everytime I think about what it would be like if she wasn't around. They truly are a part of our families.
arnie, I LOVE the stocking holder.
Thank you all for the inspiration to get back to crafting. I am over 4 years out but still have those "ugh days". Since I have started back to knitting and cross stitching I can see a big difference in my attitude. I even went yesterday and got the material to make a flannel lap blanket for the breast cancer race in october - they will sell tickets for it.
All please have a blessed day and know each one of you are in my prayers daily!

lvtwoqlt..so sorry about your loss of your doggie. gentle hugs
-
thank you all for your words of sympathy. Everything happened so fast I didn't get her paw print in concrete for a memory stone but I am thinking about painting a concete stepping stone with patio paint with the name my DH gave her 'Lady Penelope B. Hound', the year we got her and the year of her death. He said she always was a miss priss by refusing to go out in the rain and not wanting to get her feet wet when getting a bath so he gave her that nickname of Lady P. I will let you know the success of my painted stepping stone.
The first year she was our team mascot at the race for the cure, a small child (maybe 5 or 6) asked my husband if he could pet Penelope and what was her name. He gave permission to pet her and told the child that her name was Lady Penelope B. Hound. The child looked at his dad and exclaimed, Daddy, she has a middle name like I do! She really enjoyed all the attention at the RFC. Several times people would ask if she would bite or if she was aggressive. I told them that if she were aggressive (mean way) I wouldn't bring her to the event. She loved pulling me around all the people trying to see everyone that she could.

Sheila - I am SO SORRY! I know your heart is hurting! Our beloved BuddyLove died this past January... we still miss him! Hugs to you and your family!
-
Sheila, so sorry about the loss of your dog, I know how you feel I ran over one of my precious little kittens not knowing she was under my tire. Had a melt down.
Hollyann, in the mail I got the most delicate intricate beautiful table scarf I have ever seen in my life. You have no idea how it lifted my heart. Oh how I love it! I will have to take a picture soon so everyone can see the beauty. You have got so much talent. It is a piece of art.
Arnie, the santa pole stocking holder is a wonderful bit of whimsy, love it.
Ivorymom, those scarves are beautiful. I especially love the blue one. Good idea on using your left over for scarves
Asurvr, would love to see your flannel lap blanket, is it the kind where you cut the strips around it and tie them together?
Keep on crafting ladies. Have a good evening.
-
Spar...so happy to see you posting...how you feeling???? better I hope! (((hugs)))) Will be looking forward to seeing a pic of that table scarf...
I have chemo this coming Tuesday soooo I had fun in my workshop the last few days!! I made some of these rustic trees and another wreath for a friend...

-
We went to the local flea market over the weekend and found a concrete yard statue of a basset hound about 2 ft long that looks like she was laying down taking a nap just the way Lady Penelope would lay with her head on her front paws, her back twisted slightly, and her hind legs together to the right side. Of course we had to purchase it. It was right after we got there and they told us to drive up behind their booth when we were ready to leave and they would put it in the car for us. We are preparing a place for the statue in the flower bed outside the front door. I am debating painting it to look like Penelope or leaving it the natural concrete color.
Sheila -
Hi Spar,
It is the type that you cut and tie the strips together. I plan on working on it this week and will get a picture up as soon as I finish it. I'm also working on making "sour cream" containers as candy holders for the women in the fall that get free mammograms that my local hospital supports. You know having to work sure does cut into my crafting time! LOL
Love to all!!!!
-
Arnie,
love the wreath and tree!! Good luck with chemo, hope it is easy with you!
hugs and prayers
-
Arnie, I am feeling much better. Really enjoyed the new church I visited Sunday. It lifted my spirits and the new medicine I am sure has helped. Love the wreath and tree also. Am praying the chemo is not too hard on your.
asurvr, can't wait to see the picture of your blanket. How do you do the sour cream containers? Do you paint them or cover them with cloth?
Hi candie, I always smile when I see your avatar.
I am going to post a picture of hollyann's master piece and hope the picture will do it justice, it is just beautiful.

Am just amazed at all the talent people have.
lvtwoqlt, I am in awe that you found that statue, it was just meant to be. Amazing.
Hi Laura, hope you are doing well.
Everyone have a great day.
-
Hi Spar2....the sour cream containers are actually made out of scrapbook paper and a crimper is used on the ends. I'm going to try to get to make some this weekend.
I love the picture. It is absolutely beautiful.
Everyone have a blessed day!
