Lvtwoqlt: Finding that basset hound was meant to be ... the Good Lord finds little ways to make our hearts lighter. When you can, please post a picture.
By the way, since you avatar is "Loves to Quilt" I want to learn - what is the best way to learn quilting?
Arnie - I pray all went well for you. You are such a special and incredibly talented lady. I would take up wood carving but I am not allowed to play with sharp items!
Lucy - you talented person - I had no idea you made doilies - it is beautiful.
In fact, all you ladies are so darn talented. You make me want to get busy.

Kathleen, I learned from my mother and grandmother. If there is a quilt guild or quilt shop in your area you might be able to get someone to help you learn the basics or give classes on quilting. The guild I am a member is considered a 'working and teaching' guild. We meet every week (if you can't make it a week, no biggie) in the old school which is now owned by the town and rent the room (2 queen size quilts a year). We spend time with some meeting information then everyone just brings hand work and sits and talk. We invite women (and men) who would like to learn how to quilt and help them along. Right now we have several new members (friends of old members) who are interested in learning the art of hand quilting. One of the ladies pieced a top, one of the new members marked the top with the wash-out pen, and last week they started sandwiching the backing, batting and top together to baste. We are going to have a small quilt frame set up in our room and those who want to learn hand quilting will get their chance to practice on this quilt and those of us who do the hand quilting will be sharing our techniques.
My mother and sister-in-law are members of the Hickory guild which meets once a month and doesn't have the hands-on activities that we do. The members there are mainly women who already know how to quilt but they do on occasion have quilt workshops where they bring in speakers and teachers to teach new techinques. The also put on a quilt show every 3 yrs at the Hickory Metro and this year is the year for their quilt show.
there are also a few books that give the basics for starting to quilt. I will look for the title of some of the good ones and pass them on.

Sheila - thank you. I might also check with our Church - they have craft nights and I think quilting is a subject.
-
It does sound like a plan for you. Especially if you can get in with a group of women. sometimes I spend more time talking at my guild meetings than quilting, for me that is my therapy group. and for $20 a year, it is cheap therapy. Last weekend they went to Asheville NC for their guild's annual quilt show, I wasn't able to go due to my hubby only home on weekends.

I did a google search and found this book on Amazon.com. I have watched Alex Anderson's show on HGTV (when I had digital cable) and she is a good teacher.
http://www.amazon.com/Start-Quilting-Alex-Anderson-First-Time/dp/157120167X/ref=pd_sim_b_3#
It does sound like a good book to learn to quilt.
Sheilaedited to try and get link to work.

I have been a crafter for years - BC is not going to stop that! I love to paint, quilt, crochet, scrapbook and make cards.
I used to jokingly call it "craft therapy" but I seriously do think it helps keep your mind focused on something else for a while and gives you a bit of a break from real life.
I don't have a photo bucket account but I do have a blog where I share all my papercrafts. But I haven't made anything since my mastectomy last friday. I'm still working on my exercises and hope to get back to crafting ASAP.
Thanks to everyone for sharing their lovely crafts!

Here is a statue similar to what I purchased this weekend only mine is grey concrete. but it gives you the idea of what I have. I am debating painting it to look like Penelope with the red (tan) and white colors. http://www.kaccents.com/For_Home/Garden/Dogs/12290.htm

gc, that table is beautiful, I did a round table like that with decoupage family pictures all over it and polyurethaned over it. There are so many possibilities. Welcome, hope you keep coming and sharing.
JO, I am like you I think crafts kept me sane too.
As far as quilting, I spent a couple of hours with Alwayshope and she bought me a book and fixed a starter kit and there are also quilting and crocheting on youtube to help teach. I am loving it but right now have only done a pillow or purse which ever you want to call it and started a wall hanging.
I need someone to teach me to crochet knitted squares together. Can't find a youtube for that yet.
Happy crafting all. Keep those ideas and pictures coming. Sherry
-
Spar the above site may help you... hope so...
gc...beautiful work on that table!!! I broke a beautiful ceramic bird feeder and kept all the pieces to try and do a mosiac table with...just haven't gotten to that yet...lol
Hope all you other crafty ladies are doing well!!!
-
gc, gorgeous table!......
Arnie so glad you are feeling better and got in a good nap.....I got one in today......I really needed it!....
Spar, if we lived closer I would teach you!.....Do you know how to crochet at all?...If you don't I have a book that teaches you how......I could copy it for you........it has pictures showing exactly how to do the stitches.....
Kathleen, if you want I can make a doily for you, too!.....Just let me know.......
Happy crafting all!.......
-
Sheila - thank you. I will order that book. Many years ago I was into greenware/ceramics and I swear the comraderie with the other women was worth the price of the greenware! I really used to look forward to that until the couple that ran the place retired.
Marie - I couldn't agree more - crafts get you mind off your problems in a hurry!
-
As usual, I posted without reading the last page - duh! Lucy, if it is not too much trouble I would love it! GC - Beautiful, simply beautiful.
Everybody - keep posting pictures - they are so wonderful!
Love to all.
-
lol Jo, you're so silly!..I can't knit ..I can cast on to the needled but that is as far as I get....
..kathleen, no problem!...I will get one done for you soon...i agree, crafts help me to calm down and just relax....... -
hollyann, i have been watching the how to crochet on youtube, they even have some in slow motion. I can now make a chain and then I am lost. If i keep watching and practicing maybe it will come. Last night I watch the double crochet video.
JO, do you mean sew like you are sewing a seam in material or going through each loop round and round? Do you have a picture of one you have done like that?
When you crochet knitted squares together do you crochet around each square first or just start sewing them together somehow?
I am going now to watch arnies video posted above. You crafters have a great day.
-
Hi all, I hope each and everyone is doing well. I want to tell each one of you beautiful ladies what an inspiration you are......I want to take off from work and go home and get started on the crafts I have waiting for me to do

Happy crafting all!!!!!!!!!!
-
asurvr, we will be looking forward to your crafts.
lisalisa, can't wait to see all your crafts.
JO, I played around with sewing some squares together but then the back of it has seams, do you just leave those of put some kind of back on it? Also played with some and used a crochet needle and made like a chain through the squares but the same thing there is a seam at the back. How does Alwayshope do it?
-
Hey, received my neck coolers in the mail, thank you very much Sheila.
Still haven't figures out how to get my squares together without a seam on back but will keep on watching you tube and keep on trying.
Have a happy day everyone.

HI everyone, I have been missing in action, busy flying up to see my 96 yr old Mom, who now has a torn rotator cuff. Pain management is all they can do at her age, nor surgery.
My third project on the Knifty Knitter is coming along very nicely - a long scarf/shawl, that I can use to cover my shoulders and arms when it gets cold. Keeps me from falling asleep (sometimes) while in the recliner watching TV. My fine motor control, or ability to use my fingers for fine work, such as embroidery, is poor. This knitter is wonderful and almost impossible to make a mistake.
Happy crafting and HUGS. BTW, by the way, my 2 Artful Bras are on the Pinkstock thread.
-
All of you guys did such a good job on those bras, what a wonderful idea. So sorry about your mom, hope they can keep the pain under control. Is your knifty knitter one of the long kind, I still don't understand how they work but would like to learn, when you buy one does directions come with it? Hope to get to see your scarf/shawl when its done. hugs back at ya.
-
That table is AMAZING!
spar - Where is the pinkstock thread located?
-
Oh wow, all of you ladies are so talented!
Lucy, that doily is absolutely gorgeous. I crochet with the big hooks and just make easy projects - scarves, afghans, purses, etc. I tried to make doilies when I was younger and now my fingers just can't seem to get the hang of the delicate work needed when working with that fine thread.lov2quilt (sp?), I have tried my hand at restoring some old quilts, but never one from scratch. i have picked up some beautiful fat quarters, but I am completely blank about what to with them. What pattern would you suggest for a beginner?.
GC, that mosaic is beautiful! I have hard time seeing the end result when staring at broken or cut tile pieces. I wish that I had your eye for it.
Lefty, I, too have the knifty knitters. I have used the round ones to make hats. I have a long one, but I am not sure how to make a scarf on it. I did find some directions on the web once, but I have lost the bookmark (if I ever saved it - who knows? ). Are you using the long one? If so, which color and do you just turn at any of the pegs and go back over it? I don't even know if that is making sense.
Anyway, love to all of you very talented and inspirational ladies. I hope you are all having fun crafting today.

The knifty knitter comes as one single "form" or in a box with several lengths. I got the medium size at first to see if it was worth it, and it is.
The basic idea is to kind of weave back and forth around tall pegs on the form. You do it in a figure 8 pattern, instructions are included. Then you go back and put a second row over top of the first. When done, you use the hook that is included or a crochet hook to pull the bottom loop off of the peg and over top of the upper loop. Sounds harder than it is. The instructions are not the best. The first end or the beginning automatically is "finished". When you are done you loop one thru the other, like those pot holders I used to do as a kid.
I found it very, very, super easy. I did one scarf in hot pink and this one I am working on is a nubby kind of yarm, muted golden brown with purple, green, blue, and orange. I am wondering if I am ready to graduate to a round form?
Everyone, keep sharing those wonderful projects. Happy crafting. Hugs, Nancy

Laura, it is under get togethers - pinkstock 2009
I am very curious about the knifty knitter also.
-
C- my first quilt was the log cabin design-not too hard once you get the pattern/rythum down. You can get patterns at quilt/fabric stores or find a quilting class or guilde. You can also just sew together squares or rectangles in whatever pattern you like. Are you thinking of hand piecing or machine?
-
Thank you, cm harris.....I love doing the fine thread projects more than the large needle ones because the large needles hurt my fingers and hands.......I spent the weekend making Christmas ornaments and I am also working on baby booties.....I have never been able to make a purse.....Strange huh?......maybe we can work out a deal on that......
Lv2quilt..Thank you so much for the tips on stiffening the ornaments....It is so much easier and less messy using the paint brushes.......and they come out even stiffer than if I had soaked trhem for days......
nancy I have a Knifty Knitter I have never used....You can have it if you want it..It is oblong.....I think the red one.....Just PM an addy to send it to....
If anyone need directions for left handed crochet I have th edirections and would love to share...I am right handed but I also have the directions for lefties......
Spar I will send you directions on how to sew squares together....I have several books with the directions and I will just take the pages our of one of the books for you......I will send it in the morning......
Happy Crafting!......
