Jazzy, your house is going to be great when you get done decluttering and fighting off the dust dinosaur. Where are all those knights in shining armor to fight the dinosaurs! lol

Chi - I agree with Cami- I feel like I learn so much when you post. I was real interested in the blood tests posts, how they come up with different results from one to another. It was interesting that the glucose was high when fasting. I almost feel like I took a medical class when you post and I have to stop myself from giving out medical advise to other people. (only kidding)

Goldie -I work for our county planning and zoning dept. We have a program that when you turn 62 or have been there 30 years you can sign up for DROP, it is where you are technically retired with the state retirement, but you are still working and getting a paycheck, your retirement/pension goes into a special fund that you get when you stop working. You can only be on it for 5 years, so my time is up April 2021. I will be 61 yrs. old that's when my insurance problem starts, but I will figure something out. I may have thought about it more, but when I signed up my husband was alive and retired. Plans change and we all adjust.

NM - Hope your electrician comes soon and it is a easy and inexpensive fix. I hate when there is bickering at work, but I guess it is everywhere.

Teka- I think it is great that your daughter will be living so close to her work. It will be nice to run home on lunch break and throw in a load of clothes.

I think I am going to find out about the shingles vaccination. I do not want them.

JCS - So happy to hear about your great medical test results.

Cami - I love reading your posts they always make me smile. I don't know how you keep up with your job with phones ringing at all times, but it sounds like you have a lot of great friends and family that love you.

Illimae- Been thinking of you, hope you are doing ok with all you are going through.

I have had a great 3 day weekend. I got some little jobs done and had time to relax. Now have to get ready for tomorrow. Y'all have a great week!

Edited to fix typo...may have missed some others...…...

The waves certainly did a number on our north lakefront. My temple has a seawall between the parking lot & building, but waves still got over it and on to the lot...then froze. When the seawall was erected, it was 10 ft. above the beach. Now the lake level is w/in 3-4 ft. of the top. We lost two entire beaches (Rogers & Howard St.)--all the sand is gone and the water comes up to people's backyard property lines. They're going to have to use rocks & boulders as a barrier, but there is no way there will ever be enough sand to recreate these beaches for swimming. In northern Rogers Park (between those beaches), people had water lapping up against their garages. On Sheridan Rd. people in the condo & rental high rises who park in garages beneath the buildings had their cars swamped. I saw photos of the same beach (Osterman, next to the little park besided the temple) from 10 yrs ago and now. Most of the sand is gone. Lincoln Park (the 5-mi. long park between the lake and Lake Shore Drive) had to close its bike & hiking paths--those closest to the water were destroyed by the waves.

Fri. night we got >3" of snow. Then it rained overnight, and what snow remained was heavy & wet. Our landscaper (who does our shoveling & de-icing) had to charge extra because of the weight of the snow and having to salt twice. The rain puddled outside our back door on the deck and froze into a sheet of ice. We had a 9am podiatrist appt. in Evanston for Bob yesterday and had to scatter salt in front of us to get enough traction to safely make it to the back stairs to the garage. It hit 2F overnight, and was 5F when we hit the road. I wore 4 layers: thermals, flannel-lined jeggings, a sweater, down vest and down coat (plus shearling earmuffs & gloves, down hood, fake fur infinity scarf, UGGs. At least everything but my eyes were toasty-warm). Went to B'way Cellars for brunch, where I had cava. Then to Whole Foods so Bob could have beer, booze & snacks for the NFL playoffs.

I dropped him off and went to Costco for (cheaper than Chicago) gasoline, more long johns for both of us and basic supplies. I picked up a couple of chenille sweaters (size M) and a 2-pack of Puma sports bras for the gym and sleep. Got them out of the package, and peee-YEW! That disgusting pesticide-petroleum-drycleaner stench endemic to so many Chinese-made polyester knits! People keep saying "buy American," but try that with clothing. Not just Costco, Target, Zara, Old Navy, Forever 21 or H&M, but even Macy's, Bloomie's & Nordstrom have barely anything--even designer stuff--not made in China. (At least the pricier stuff out on the open racks & shelves doesn't stink). I tossed the bras in the wash, and hope that gets rid of the smell. Even if I could stand the smell, my lungs would go into vapor-lock. Sad state of affairs when you can't buy American even if you avoid "fast-fashion." Designer resale is probably the only way to find quality clothing that doesn't have either chemicals or bugs, but secondhand stores are a minefield--not all of them bother to properly clean the stuff before putting it out for sale. There's a musty-attic smell to secondhand (Goodwill, "Sally Ann") clothing I cannot abide.

Remember those old TV commercials that asked "what if we didn't have plastic in our lives?" and showed almost everything in a room disappearing? These days, substitute "Chinese-made goods" for "plastic," and everything would disappear. Even furniture made in NC uses Chinese parts. Only my ancient (nonfunctioning) piano, guitars & dulcimers would remain. Maybe my All-Clad & Le Creuset. Remember when "made in Japan" was synonymous with "cheap" and "tacky?" Those were the days. Even Japanese & Korean appliances are made in China now.

No alcohol for me last night or today. My birthday (69) is coming up Thurs. and we will be going out Wed. night (hoping for Everest).

Chi-I agree with you about things and clothing from China. We have lost the quality of things. Maybe its gone because of pride in workmanship.

I feel for all of you in the cold, freezing weather. I moved to Florida when I was 15, so its been a long time since I was in that kind of weather. And when I was I did not have to deal with it as an adult. I do remember being bundled up so much that it was hard to move and my feet frozen after ice skating. I think January is the coldest month. When I think back with every one bundled up in clothing like a cocoon we still knew who each other was, or maybe I was just hanging out with random strangers. Hopefully it will not last long, just be safe and warm.

Sandy, DH, who is a Northwestern professor geologist, paleontologist, says Jeff Goodell’s book, “ The Water will Come,” speaks to how much worse the rising sea level will come in the oceans as well as the Great Lakes, though I strongly suspect you know all this and have read everything. Today is our last day in Key West which ,later in this century, if nothing is done about climate change will disappear. All the coastal cities of the world will be under water.

Happy Birthday on Thursday. When mine comes in April, I prefer Due’s to the Everest Room, though with young grandson we usually wind up at the Pancake House- carbs be d...med.

    Mornin ladies,

Wow everyone <almost> came in even a newbie, Welcome Key hope u come back an join in.

OK I read every word about shingles and believe it or not I did remember somethings only cuz my had it a couple of time, one time she had it on the back of her scalp, she said that was the worse one an my SIL mom had it on the front of her face it just looked painful, it was over one eye too. I'm glad u wrote that out tho, it's making me think more about it. Thank you.

TEKA u dropped in. I hope ur recovery goes well. And now ur DD is really close to work, good for her.

Jazzy u never stop. Can u play those CD's on something now. I have a bunch but don't know where to play them. An I know u'll know what I can do. I can picture u mentoring many people in ur life, u are a very special role model and u truly care about people. It's good u went so u could see that for ur'self.

Good to see u Kim I really missed u, I'm so used to starting my day and the DOTD with u I really thought somehow I missed it all.So good ur back.

Misty see we both have some shingle thinking to do. And BTW I worked for the state and didn't retire til I reached my 20 time so my retirement fund would be a decent amount, So I <at first> thought I could go back to work eventually even tho my drs. didnt think so, so I got my sick leave every 6 mons. Then when I reached my 20 yr mark I waited a few more months knowing I could not work retired. Not that it is a fortune but better than less than 20 yrs. I worked for the state only for the benefits and good thing I did. I was lucky to be able to.

Lori I know u've got some trips planned good for you but again I miss u when ur not here.

Oh as far as my job if my cousin didn't love me I would have been long gone. One lady I call crazy lady to her face <on the phone> now she calls herself that, I've picked up the phone and said WTF do u want , but we still got the job. and so many more things, he thinks I'm funny and the main man I work with calls me just to tell me he loves me so It's not my job performance it;'s I tell people what they want to tell them. And when I get paid and we have a good month I get hundreds more than I should or deserve. I'm just lucky that's all ,

Sandy I didn't know about all the beach that's been lost, that''s a lot. And scary too. And now ur in a M size WOW that's great, u deserve it u've really worked for it.

If I missed anyone I'm sorry but hope u all have a good day.

    LUBS U ALL

Jazzy that pic was beautiful, u get the most gorgeous sunsets I have ever seen. and u capture it like a professional.

JC u have a 75 mustang ??? WOW restoring that car must be fun and so worth it. U've got to take a pic. for us.

And no mosquitoes to funny. BTW since chemo have any of u been bit by a mosquito??? So far I haven't had any even when a person sitting right by me is all bitten up. Just wondering.

Cami- I still have CD players both in my cars and in my house. I also have a boom box with both a CD player and cassette player. Just getting rid of the excess stuff I don't listen to.

Trust me when I say I still have plenty of CDS to listen to (like hundreds.....)

good morning Loungettes! Well the guy didn’t come to fix the garage door Monday, that’s been rescheduled and hopefully he’ll be here in a couple of hours today. We shall wait and see. In the meantime we’re trying to balance the budget a bit at work which means using fewer agency nurses, so I’ll be doing a couple days a week on the floor for a couple of weeks to help with that. But it’s all planned out and I’ll get some nice three day weekends out of it too so not so bad. Sadie is not quite so impressed, but will find a way to make it up to her.

Jazzy— Beautiful sunrise pic. Did you actually get the rain that the red sky is promised? I don’t mind listening to people who have a serious issue going on, or somebody who just needs to vent and get something out of their hair so to speak, but for some like you say the sky is always falling and those people I’m beginning to find very draining. I too am hoping the electrician calls soon exclamation!

    Warning Teka!

Librarian— A travel month sounds like a wonderful thing to have on the calendar. It’s hard to believe that it’s not that much longer before it will be spring garden and yard cleanup and work time. And true at least there are no mosquitoes!

Misty— It might be worthwhile to talk to a financial advisor about the whole insurance thing. I wish I had when I’ve gone from full-time to part-time a while back. Financially I actually would’ve been better off to not have insurance, and paid the fine that was in effect for not having insurance at the time. I was paid a huge amount through the marketplace for insurance, which never covered anything because the deductible was so high. Anyway you’ll figure out what’s right for you to do.

Chi—Wow that’s a lot of damage that’s been done along the local sure front. Sounds kind of scary in some places! Nothing like heavy wet snow to make life miserable. Except maybe the sawmill and refreeze scenario! That is downright miserable at times. It is awfully hard to find anything not made in China or somewhere in Asia these days isn’t it.

    Welcome, KeyWest! Happy Birthday early!

Cammy Cat—interesting observation about mosquitoes not biting people after having had chemo! I wonder what they know that the rest of us don’t?

Genny—so not fair of the post stealing gremlin to hit you so soon after coming back online. Oh well we’ve been dealing with him for years I guess we’ve all kind of gotten used to them.

    DOTD

    Ciroc Cosmo

    1.5 oz Ciric Red Berry

    2 oz cranberry juice

    1 squeeze of lime

Hi ladies- happy hump day! Got my coffee and my day going. Lots to do today, but going to get a midday swim in too.

KeyWest- welcome to our thread! Did someone say pancakes?

Cami- thank you for your compliments on my photography. My Google Pixel 3 phone has the most outstanding camera in it, which makes great pictures like that red sky shot possible.

NM- yes, we got rain all day yesterday, a nice gentle rain (the kind that soaks in) vs. quick run off. The mountains are getting a lot of snow again this winter, which is a good thing for her as snow pack is our water supply. All the winter moisture helps reduce our fire risk as well as fill up our reservoirs in the spring. And it sounds like you have a new schedule again, but I do like the idea of regular three day weekends. I hope the garage people get rescheduled soon!

Had a nice long chat with my SIL's aunt back east this morning. She pretty much raised my SIL along with the grandmother and far away on the east coast, and not in good enough health to take a trip out to see her. She has been a really good friend to our family through the years, and decided keeping in touch with her more often in 2020 with phone calls this year is something I can do to help the situation. I call her about every three weeks and she appreciates it. She's very realistic about what is happening, but really hard on both her and the mom.

Got to get to my day. I think I am taking myself out to lunch again today during my errands run.

I read on another post that Illimae is having her surgery today. It was in the "My family, my life...." I can't remember. I think it is in the Stage IV area. I read it sometimes and her husband is suppose to post there after her surgery.

    Afternoon ladies,

I'm all over the place today. Kim ur really throwing me off no pic. with the DOTD, what's that all about??? It does sound like ur getting in line for what needs to be one with ur job. My favorite part is when ur teaching...Whatever u teach has to be unreal, cuz u are so so good at explaining. Actually so many of u gals can explain things so well. It still after all this time amazes me.

It's chilly willy around here and now I hear this weekend is suppose to be horrid. It's my grand daughter's B and we are all supposed to go out but now the weather is going to ruin it, I bet. U can never really plan much in these winters and yet it can be nice. I hope they're wrong, cuzz we all want to go. hahaha I love restaurants, always have.and nowadays I look up the menu on the puter to see what I like before I ever go. So I can make a whole day out of lookingfor something I like. So little thrills me. Sandy u might get worse weather ur way, IDK

OK I did get a flu shot today she was almost pleading with me cuz she said if I caught this I' for sure end up in the hospital, but she didn't push the pneumonia one and she's thinking about the shingles and I really don;'t know why. She wants me to see my Onc. soon, I just saw her a few months back. Somethings going on in her head not mine but it had to do with my weight. I lost over 20 lbs more in a short time. I told her she's supposed to say good for you, but her reasoning is something doesn''t add up since I'm not on any diet or watch what I eat. Now I like her but this is why I hate Drs. in general they are always looking for something. AND TESTS, more tests. I know I'm complaining but it's never ending for truth and justice and the American way. Got off course for a second.

Well I'll be by in the morning hahaha I almost wrote it in Italian without thinking. Boy my brain is going big time

    LUBS U ALL

Ilona, you're probably "out like a light" right now and so not reading this, but I hope your hospital gown in the O.R. has large enough pockets for all of us. Get well soon--you have great meals to eat, yummy drinks, and terrific rock concerts to attend.

Been coming down on & off since 2 am--so far, about an inch that's melting as it hits the pavement. But seeing as how it's supposed to continue through Saturday, that'll change. Yesterday we needed a Lyft down to the S. Loop, and though our snow guy cleared the paths between the "parkways" (for you non-Chicagoans, those are the green-strips near the curb where the trees are planted--called "parkways" because back when the streets were first laid out, that was where one's horses were hitched when detatched from the carriages), it was tricky walking due to the ensuing plows coming through, creating 6-12" high snow berms that froze over. Picture me in my dressy coat and suede pump flats hanging on to car trunks for dear life as I clambered over them to await our ride. (At least the shoes have rubber soles). My rings are tight, so the barometric pressure shows no signs of rising. The flurries have morphed back into big fat wet flakes, still not sticking to the trees...yet.

And we got a Lyft driver who was not only unfamiliar with the N. Side, but insisted on slavishly following the Lyft app (based on Waze, which is crowdsourced mostly by truck & delivery-van drivers). He called to say he had arrived...in the alley behind our house (to & in which it's too icy to safely walk). I asked him to come around and pick us up in front...and he got lost because the stupid app kept taking him into alleys, which have no street signs. I was so frustrated talking to him and giving him directions (which he ignored) that I yelled into the phone, and our across-the-street neighbor came out scowling & shaking her fist. Had our driver not arrived, I was sure she was going to call the cops on us.

Judy, when Bob said that when our retirement funds begin to run down we won't notice--that people >80 have more modest needs because they can't travel, I replied that he should tell that to my friend and her DH from Evanston who are down in Key West right now. He replied "Oh," in a pleasantly surprised way. We've been thinking of the Merion, but not yet--gotta get everything here repaired to where we can get a decent price for the house. The kids don't want the upkeep--as tenants in a non-owner-occupied 2-flat, they've got as much of that as they're willing to handle. Gordy learned how to use a lawn mower, and the block club actually pays a service for sidewalk snow removal. They will have to fix their fence: Dot wriggled under it and Gordy had to run down the alley to get her back. She's learned to tolerate her kennel, but prefers her fake fur memory-foam doggie bed. Leslie marveled that she'd never had a dog that likes a dog bed. They are pretty strict about keeping her off their own bed. (Tried that with our kitties, for decades. Hahahahahaha....).

Speaking of the kids, we met them for dinner last night at Everest (Alsatian), in the S. Loop atop the Financial Plaza bldg. (Yes, I cheated...modestly...till dessert). We had the tasting menu, and Bob ordered a wine pairing for himself (and an empty glass for me). The kids (and Bob) started with several craft cocktails (based on artisanal ryes, bourbons & fruit "shrubs," with those huge clear single ice cubes). With the "amuse-bouche," I had a flute of the house crémant d'Alsace rosé. With the first course, an off-dry (unusual for Alsace) Alsatian Pinot Blanc; with the second (foie gras) a vendange tardive (a bit sweeter) Alsatian Pinot Gris; with the entree (pheasant), 2017 Crozes-Hermitage (Syrah); with the cheese course, an Oregon Pinot Noir; and with the dessert course, a fortified Alsatian black muscat (very sweet--I had literally one sip). I was very judicious with my wine intake, and it was a wonderful feeling to feel satisfied but not stuffed, and clear-headed. (Of course, I will be paying for the carb-cheats--especially dessert--for days; I forgot to bring my starch-blocker pills).

    Afternoon ladies,

Misty Thank you for telling us, except I have no idea what's going on with Ill But I am saying prayers for the best outcome for her.

Sandy that Lyft driver was so funny and u helping out, even funnier. And how in the worl can u have all these goodies in front of you and not indulge. Wow what discipline, I could never do that. But it sounds like u all enjoyed urselves, which is the best part. Sandy this weather is crazy, every day is a surprise around here. I want so bad to go tomorrow night or my GD's BD party and yet we can't plan til last minute.

Oh I got my blood tests and I am excellent for cholesterol and sugar stuff. But my white count and re count are not good and a couple of other things not so good, but I really don't know what they are so that's fine. But she did write and tell me she's ordering a couple of tests and to see my Onc ASAP. Of course she does know ASAP means nothing to me. Maybe in the next couple of months I'll get around to it. I told u gals I'm the worst patient a Dr. has to put up with. I remember when u had to wait a whole week for results now it withing 24 hrs. Big difference.

OK why do I always make this about me, but I do. LOL

    Sandy,

Tell Bob he’s half right. We do travel still. Going to Palm Springs for a week in Feb. 8,day cruise with friends from Montreal to Boston in September and, oops, almost forgot, to Shaw Festival in Niagara on the Lake in June, then to Denver. But Gil does not want to travel internationally any more and I’m okay with that. It’s sad though that we’ll never see Paris or Venice again, but the airports are stressful ... We’ll stick to U.S. and Canada.

We both hate to leave our little girl, Dahlia, our snowshoe Siamese, but my cleaning lady takes her to her house. When that changes and Beata returns, if she does, to Poland, travel will end. Could never leave her alone even though DS, Tony, would look in on her.

On another note,I appreciated Key West even more this year and am always conscious that health can change and that, of course, is the greatest deterrent to travel, I think, even more than diminishing retirement funds. See MO, Monday, and aware that one word from him can make all travel plans caput.

It took about 1.5 years to get our house ready to sell. It was turning 80 that provided the impetus.

What makes us sad is that by the time we can get around to taking an Alaska Inside Passage cruise, the glaciers and fjords might be gone.

I spent >1 hr. going around in circles with the City's Dept. of Water Mgmt. & Billing. We have a meter, and have been on monthly AutoPay for over a year. Today I got a nasty dunning letter that I was $69 and 30 days past due--the bill was due in Dec. and I might be facing shutoff and would be assessed an interest penalty each month (not to mention a hit to my credit rating). After diving 5 levels deep into the automated voicemail system and holding for 15 min., I got a live human being. She took all my info and then informed me she couldn't pull up my bill because she'd been having problems with the computer system. When I explained and she consulted a supervisor, she replied that what happened must have been because I'd overpaid in Nov., the city redeposited it into my bank acct. and "it must have canceled your autopay plan." I replied that every other creditor on the face of the earth credits overpayments to existing balances till the overpayment gets used up. She couldn't explain why that didn't happen here but said she couldn't do anything about it. "Call your bank," she said. I asked her what the heck my bank could do--especially when it wasn't anythng it had or hadn't done. I also told her that just because their computer system is an idiot that gets a nervous breakdown and then kills customer payment plans when it encounters an overpayment, I shouldn't be penalized for it. I told her I needed to go over her head, so the dept's I.T. guy got on the line, said he'd look into it, and call me back "within the hour." He never called back, of course. I gave up and paid the stupid $69 online--but I wouldn't be surprised if it gets bounced back and I get dunned again. (We're on paperless billing, so I never even got a "payment due" reminder or bill). Rod Serling is dead, but the Twilight Zone is alive and kicking.

So Bob got home early enough tonight to go out for my actual birthday dinner. We decided to try someplace we've never been (but a darn sight cheaper than Everest). Consulted our family restaurant critics--Gordy & Leslie are definite foodies--and chose Band of Bohemia, a brewpub in Ravenswood (2 mi. away). It is the world's only brewpub with a Michelin star--not just a Bib Gourmand listing, but an actual star. It was awesome. Even parked free right out front on the street--meters were off! I'll list the dishes on the Dinner thread, but here are the drinks: cava to start (Bob had their "Raven" signature ale); with the enteree Bob had a Vouvray and I had a "blaufrankisch" (a red varietal) from the Burgenland area on the border of Austria & Hungary (where Bob's mom was born). With dessert, a Thai silver tip oolong. (Yeah--the place even has a coffee & tea sommelier). It'll be our new go-to to take out of town guests.

Happy Birthday, Sandy! Sounds like you enjoyed eating your way through it! We went out with friends the other night to a restaurant we had not been to in years. While the food was good, it was not as good as I remembered. Did have a good drink with champagne, gin and lemon syrup. It was so good I had two!

Went to my last visit to the oncologist until March 20th. At that time I will have another CT scan to see how well things are going. I think I am ok with loosing my excuse for being lazy! I do have three books to pick up at the library today and four basketball games to watch tomorrow. Then starting Monday I will begin tidying up inside and outsideto host Bridge in February.

Bought my plane ticket to Houston. It is amazing how difficult it is to get out of here to almost anywhere. Our airport does not support large planes so we always have to route through Atlanta, DC or Cleveland. Makes for a long day. This time DH will drive me to Charlotte (Shorter drive than the people picking me up in Houston!) to catch a nonstop flight. He hates that drive so my son might ride with him. Or I will drive myself and not have to listen to the complaining.

Hope everyone has a great weekend planned. Take care!

JCS, need a pic of you in that 1970 Mustang! Enjoy those vacations, especially the chemo one!

Misty, wishing you all good things come 2021. So you hit the big 60 this year! Hopefully you haven't been hit with any falling iguanas that we have all heard about! Thank you for letting us know about our baby girl. I'm not done reading yet and if I don't see anything hear, I'll look for her husbands post.

Sandy, quite the ordeal with the lake and rising waters, and burrrrr, it's cold or was, by you, but you dressed for it. Glad no one slipped on the ice. Laughing at you and neighbor and the lyft driver!

Cami, re your cousin and your job, you are not lucky, you are LOVED! As for CD's, you should be able to play them on your computer...ask Joey. I like looking at menu's on line too if I haven't been there before, also Yelp to see what kind of ratings they have. As for the weight loss, are you eating less and not as often? If not, then I can see where her concern is. Please listen and do what they ask of you. We want you around a long time! OK, NOW I'M YELLING AT YOU. YOU GET THAT SKINNY ASS TO YOUR ONC LIKE YOU ARE TOLD.

NM, budgeting at work, I like the 3 day weekends for you, but hope they aren't taking advantage of you.

    Sandy, happy belated birthday!

Well came home from Laughlin ahead, but not rich by no means! I think enough to pay for our hotel and gas! Hotel was less than $100 for 3 nights! Ate like pigs! I think my heiny is feeling better, a whole week of owie from the Faslodex shots and I get 2 more this coming Thursday! Then again 2 weeks after that! Then monthly! So looking forward to my MI trip, I can't wait. Wish I had time to get to visit with Cami and Mary, I will try and fit Mary in, just a day trip. Cami is 2 days, so I will try and make that in Sept my friend. I would so love to see all of you again.

This is a post from Illimae yesterday...

So here's the deal. It was almost all cancer, not much radiation necrosis as expected but it went really well and the neurosurgeon is confident she get all she could see, probably follow up with more rads. My big problem is the incubation tube and being positioned on my right side. Throat is killing me and I can't swallow, so this is my 2nd day of no sleep and no food. I've been very nauseous too and we've been battling so high blood pressure. I am able to walk some, grateful for that.

My sweet baby girl, praying for all good things for you, I can't imagine how devastated you must be. Wrapping you in light, love and all things good my friend!
