Good morning Loungettes! Happy thirsty Thursday. It started to snow here now, we’re supposed to get a few inches, so of course everything is already starting to close down or delayed openings, mostly closing. I think it’s a bit crazy. Used to be this would just be called snow not a snowstorm or snow event. Oh well times Do you change don’t they? Sadie says hi to everyone today.
Goldie— I suspect that Chaz‘s sister-in-law hasn’t been offered Hospice yet because she still has some of her 100 days of Medicare skilled care remaining. The nursing home gets paid a higher rate per day when somebody’s on the skilled benefit. When I was working in hospice one of the things that I saw frequently was somebody who was not doing well clearly wasn’t going to be getting better would be kept on skilled services for the full 100 days and then Hospice would be recommended or offered. I once admitted a person to hospice At the end of the 100 days, she died 30 minutes after I got there. It’s a financial benefit to the nursing home to keep her on skilled care as long as possible. Yes, my house is built into a hill. The basement opens up on one side completely so I can drive in and it’s also my garage, the back end of the house the kitchen deck is nearly at ground level. It’s an odd sort of set up but it works very well. I was so excited to see that your tumor markers are down! So good for you!
Jazzy—Wow you are getting a lot done around your house! Good to hear the blood sugars are stabilizing. Maybe you’ll be able to get off the Metformin? I think my leak is coming from one of the basement windows. I’ve got to get up in there and get a better look sometime during the daylight hours to tell though.
Cammy Cat— I promise I’m being careful, but my basement/garage is built with drains in the floor, so everything should be OK that way. And whatever was leaking isn’t leaking anymore, it was only leaking when it was raining really hard and the wind was coming from a certain direction. But I am still being very careful, and will continue to be.
Jazzy— Don’t you just love how one simple technological change can screw up so many things! You think it could all work out better by now wouldn’t you?
Chi— Wow, living in an aging body is not for woossies, is it? And after all that work and weight loss having to go through another adjustment to a “new normal“ is just not fair. Sorry to hear about Bob’s knees. Having undependable knees is not fun. Sorry to hear about losing the maple tree. It’s amazing how a nearly dead tree can look so nice. Makes it even harder to see them go sometimes.
Misty— Been busy with family is a good thing! Retiring sounds kind of interesting, do you be sure you take a good hard look at the insurance part though even though insurance marketplace policies are pretty darn expensive. A part-time job just to pay insurance may be the way to go.
Genny— I do mostly really enjoy the new job. I do love teaching. Right now I’m going through a bit of a rough patch with trying to wrangle people to get caught up on mandatory education, and it’s kind of like herding cats. And these are supposed to be grownups! Still we’re getting through it slowly but surely. Good to hear your lab work is in a good range. Not so good to hear about the continuity of care issue that is really a royal pain in the patootie

Mornin ladies,
Jazzy u have lots to do with Drs. now and insurance. I wonder if a lot of ins. things changed at the beginning of the yr. Well I'll find out. Ur keeping urself busy all right and ho'w the swimming going??? That's the only thing I enjoy doing.
Misty it's so nice when u really post. 34 yrs. Holy chit. What do u do??? And how do u do it for that long. It's good ur so busy right now, but I'm sure it's tiring for you.
Ur another one Genny, Mary, And ur a picture person which I enjoy so much. Ah Nora with her hands on her hips already. She has gotten so big and still beautiful, and Evelyn what a smile and her hair is so cute. OK cute Santa, but ur furbabies are adorable, they look like fun.How are they with the kids. U've been blessed Mary and that's wonderful.
Sandy it's a shame to have a big tree go bad and has to leave you. Especially the shade for so many years. have to LOL though cuz u have to push Bob to go to the Dr., but I think most drs. are like that cuz they really know what's going on. I still remember when u could call for an app't and get one the same week. Now it's at least a month, that's why most of us make the app't for the next time while we're there, it's so strange.
Well I didn't go yesterday but now planning today. I hate when I cancel, I'm such a baby. If I don't feel right I feel better staying home cuz I don't want to be out. I really never feel great or good anymore but some days are worse than others and it's hard to plan So, so far I don't feel lousy so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for today.
I went to turn on my puter and u know how at first it has all ur regular links or redo the same links well a bunch of them came up I never saw. Then I realized it was all business links an I don't know how that happened and I had everything set just the way I liked now it's all quicken, or names I never heard of. Chit now I have to figure out how to get rid of them and get my reg. ones back. Oh I can ask Dan, but I already know what he'll do...send me a pic. of a single finger and say u can do it.
OK I have to go my phone is starting.
Have a good day.

Hi friends- up early to go to a networking event, so will make this a shortie. Got the blinds guy in for measurements yesterday. Will go back in tomorrow to finish my order and get this project going. Yesterday I purged a bunch of old medications as part of my de-cluttering activity, but the bigger job was to go through all my music (CDS mostly). I have ALOT of CDS and found about 40 I have no use for that can go. I have some friends who might be interested to take some of this, will donate the rest. I still have some old cassettes to go through too. I got rid of my vinyl years ago. I have not done a bigger deep clean and purge in awhile and it feels good!
Cami- I have not been to the pool yet but plan to go today at noon.
Misty- You may have a couple options if you want to retire early, and before Medicare time. If you can make it to next April, how much of a gap will you have to 65? I have an ACA plan through the marketplace and you can get one too, there is no pre-existing condition stuff there which as a cancer survivor, you want. The enrollment period for 2020 has ended, but if you choose to leave and have a gap, with a letter from your company, you can get enrolled. I won't kid you that it is expensive though, and prices vary state to state and by which insurance companies are in the ACA plans (not all participate). You may also be able to cover yourself through COBRA, all companies have to provide 18 months of coverage to you, but it will be at their cost. It still may be less than ACA. I used Cobra a couple times to bridge to other things. I also had a friend that did that in her 60s, who was a cancer survivor and just needed to leave her position. She bridged herself to 65 with Cobra. If you explore your options with what is available and the cost, it may help you to decide what is best?
More later gators.....

Genny - Columbia is a great place to live. I have been here over 40 years. Housing costs are reasonable and there is very little traffic! We are in the central part of the state. Only 2 hours to the beach and 2 hours to the mountains. My only complaint is our airports are very small with limited flights. We often fly out of Charlotte, NC as there are more direct flights and parking is cheaper. Our biggest weather problems are the humid summers and hurricanes.
I am concerned that once I stop chemo I will regain the 30 lbs I have lost over this past year! It is so much more fun to shop for clothes when you are not limited to the “largest” sizes. Oh well, time will tell. Another friend has offered me her beach condo in March. Should be less crowded and a great time to walk on the beach.
I need to do some cleaning/purging while I have the chance. Might get on that next week...
-
Jazzy, sounds as though your sister is quite bull headed and I think you are doing pretty much all you can with the cards and phone calls. If SIL can get on hospice, that would save their cash, right?
Cami, I don't think you are being silly for not going out, especially if you are afraid of falling. I hope you made it out yesterday.
Misty, what kind of work do you do?
Mary, how did your MO appt. go? The new drug I'm on is Verzenio along with Faslodex shots. Looking forward to more pics of the girls. Surely Nora loves being a big sister?
NM, not sure if you remember, but we had a horrible time getting my mom into long term care with hospice. They were always telling us she didn't qualify because she could feed herself! That was their excuse. I don't think they wanted her because she on Medicare or Medicade and they would only get $800 a month.
Sandy, glad you are feeling better.
JCS, good luck on keeping the weight off when you stop chemo. How long are you off? What will they be doing to determine if you have to go back on?
Well, I finally got the Faslodex, only took 7 weeks! MO was pleased with the drop in TM's, especially since I hadn't had the Faslodex to go with it. I forgot how they hurt, 2 shots, right in the muscle in each butt cheek! I have to do labs every 4 weeks, instead of 6, buuuuuuut...he said I don't have to go back for 8 weeks, instead 6! He said I could do every 4 weeks if I wanted to. Uhhhhhhh no! So I have to do the shots again in 2 weeks, then in another 2 weeks, then monthly after that.
It drizzled all day yesterday while we were gone, very messy and slippery getting in on our dirt road in the almost dark. A bit sketchy in some areas, but we made it.Perfect DOTD, due to my drive in last night.....
A Mudslide!
1 oz. Vodka 1 oz. Kahlua 1 oz. Bailey Irish Cream I oz. Cream 1 cup crushed ice chocolate syrup to drizzle inside glass whip cream (optional)And how about this to go with it?
Mudslide Pie

Finished the chemo infusion until late March!!!! Since the diagnosis in November 2018, I have had only one bad PET scan. That was the very first one. All the rest have shown no cancer anywhere. I talked the MO into doing localized treatments last summer. The lumpectomy removed nothing except the tumor marker clip. No other cells were found. The SBRT was to the only tumor barelylarge enough to biopsy. The RO told me I would not be back. I asked the MO if after this last cycle of chemo I could get a break. He actually used the words, “We might have gotten it all” during our conversation. If the scans in March show no progression, we will continue with the chemo holiday. I will continue my supplements, exercising, getting good sleep, etc. This will keep me healthy enough to fight off (I hope!) any progression for a long time. I gave the chemo nurses very unhealthy cream cheese brownies and the MO got a gift card for donuts! They also got some heartfelt thank you cards.
Goldie - Sorry about all the shots. Hopefully it works so the pain is worth it. Love that drink! Kahlua was one thing responsible for some of my weight gain. Do love that stuff over ice.
Hope everyone has a great weekend lined up. It has gotten cold here. Doubt we will get any of the ice moving through the upper south. Take care everyone!

JCS, holidays are great, but drug & chemo "holidays" must be fantastic! As to your fears of regaining the weight you lost during chemo, as long as you watch what you eat (not just calories but what kinds of calories) and keep moving you should be fine. You might regain a little bit due to being able to eat adequately again, but with a little work you can shed it--this time healthfully. Malnutrition and malabsorption is a lousy way to get thin. (It is the mechanism by which bariatric surgery works, which causes lifelong side effects that make one feel worse and eventually try to sabotage the loss). Chemo drugs themselves don't directly cause weight loss--they don't speed up your metabolism, but rather wreck your appetite and mess with your tastebuds so you eat less. As I said, a crappy way to lose weight long-term.
I learned something interesting last night at dinner from Bob (my DH who's a cardiologist). I asked him how it was possible for my a1c to be 5.8 while my glucose was >110. He asked me if the blood draw for the chem panel was done at the same time as for the lipids, and I said yes. He then said "it was fasting, right? Lipids should always be drawn fasting." I replied yes. He said "Then it means your post-prandial glucose is really pretty good, probably 90 or lower." I was shocked--I thought that eating before a blood draw would result in a higher glucose reading, but he said that eating--in someone w/o diabetes or true insulin resistance--causes release of insulin necessary to keep glucose in check. When I mentioned that I once had a postprandial reading of 145 a few decades ago at my first appointment with the FP who was to put me on a diet with Redux, he replied, "Oh, yeah--I remember that. You ate an entire tube of Hungry Jack biscuits as your farewell to carbs--and that overwhelmed the insulin release; the next reading a week later was 92."
So that's why my primary & MO were more delighted by the 5.8 a1c but unconcerned about the triple-digit glucose: the blood draw had to be a fasting one for an accurate lipid profile, so the glucose result was aberrant.
DOTD last night: at Santorini restaurant in Greektown, a half-glass of the restaurant's eponymous private-label Assyrtiko white wine. (Went great with the snapper). Half-glass because not only was I driving (Bob had cabbed it to the office because his car had two impending flats and woke up too late to take public transit), but I was following my rule: if I'm done with my food I'm done with the wine with which it was paired, no matter how much remains in the glass. Bob was a happy camper. I followed it with, instead of dessert, a demitasse of Greek coffee but made without sugar. It made the taste of cardamom more prominent, which in turn made my burps en route home all the more delicious.

Hi friends- just a quick note after a busy week. Had a prof org meeting at my contract before last site yesterday and got to see my old team. They shared all the changes that have gone the almost year since I left. They told me how much I had helped them during that project and to bring them to where they are now, and really loved working with this team and it was just a heartwarming visit. Think we are doing a happy hour soon.
I ended up with second Shingrex shot this week too. I was eligible for part 2 this week and asked Walgreens if they had any in and they did so I got the second dose on Thursday. Did okay with it, outside of the sore arm for a day. No flu-like feeling this time. I also ended my time on the South Beach Phase 1 Thursday. Just was not feeling that great, not getting enough calories or carbs.
Will be back again soon. Hoping everyone has a good start to the weekend!

JCS, wishing you a long vacation (from chemo). I can def. stand a little pain in the behind! I'm more of a Bailey's fan, not so much Kahlua.
Well, still a sore heiny this morning, but that's ok. I booked a trip to Michigan to visit my brothers and girlfriends. Anohter one of our friends lives in CO, I haven't seen her in probably 30 years. Well, she saw my post and booked a flight as well. I'm so excited to see her. Leaving Monday for Laughlin, be back on Thursday. First week of April, going camping with our friends out there and some others. This guy has a cannon that shoots bowling balls. So guess what we will be doing!
-
Avalanche Coctail
The Avalanche Cocktail is basically a White Russian with Crown Royal instead of vodka. That of course adds notes of caramel to the flavors of sweetened coffee and cream.
- 1 part Crown Royal
- 1 part Kahlua
- fill with cream
Put ice in a highball glass and pour the ingredients in, in order. Stir and serve.

Mornin ladies,
Oh Lori SHOTS, but if they do their job it's so wonderful.
JC it's great to get a break from chemo. I had like 2 breaks and it was fine. When u start up again tho u feel comfortable doing so u know what to expect and that is a one upper when u go back. There are so many knowledge d women here and I know they can certainly give everyone here really good advice on anything. I just give what i've experience. LOL
Lori I really like these drinks these are 2 of my favorite liquors, Just way to easy to go down and all of a sudden WOW if u drink enough. I don't really member having hangovers tho.
Sandy ur so lucky u don''t have to leave ur house to ask questions. cracked me up u ate a whole thing of biscuits. U started with a bang. I have to say tho ur questions are ones that we all have too so it's good to hear the answers, well what I can understand anyway.

Those of you who shared your Shingles vaccine stories, I thank you. My Dr keeps pushing for it, so I may now have the "nerve" to do so. Last year I had a pneumonia vaccine that really through me for a loop, so have been leery of the shingles one. I had a very minor outbreak of shingles on my back when I was pregnant for DD.

Mornin ladies,
Oh Celia I think I'm going to ask for it and I hate these shots. I too had the pneumonia shot and ended up in the hospital in ICU with pneumonia and that time they told my kids to maybe start saying their goodbyes I never got that in my life so I didn't take it this year. But I don't know if Shingles run in the family or not actually, but I do know they're painful cuz my mom used to get them. So if u decided to get it, get it. I'm still kind of on the fence but falling toward the "get it" side.
Wow where is everyone??? I know u could tell I didn't take a shower yesterday, well woman it up and face it.
It is so cold in my area, no one wants to go anywhere. OK me mostly, but we did have snow then it just went super cold, my little heater isn't doing to much to help now. It's mid Jan. so we have to get crappy weather.
Have a good Sunday everyone.

Cami - Anyone who has ever had chicken pox is at risk for shingles. See below for info from Mayo Clinic.
Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. Although shingles can occur anywhere on your body, it most often appears as a single stripe of blisters that wraps around either the left or the right side of your torso.
Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you've had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near your spinal cord and brain. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles.
While it isn't a life-threatening condition, shingles can be very painful. Vaccines can help reduce the risk of shingles, while early treatment can help shorten a shingles infection and lessen the chance of complications.
Factors that may increase your risk of developing shingles include:
- Being older than 50. Shingles is most common in people older than 50. The risk increases with age. Some experts estimate that half the people age 80 and older will have shingles.
- Having certain diseases. Diseases that weaken your immune system, such as HIV/AIDS and cancer, can increase your risk of shingles.
- Undergoing cancer treatments. Radiation or chemotherapy can lower your resistance to diseases and may trigger shingles.
- Taking certain medications. Drugs designed to prevent rejection of transplanted organs can increase your risk of shingles — as can prolonged use of steroids, such as prednisone.

Hi friends- happy Sunday Funday. Cami said it's quiet here so I figured that was an invitation for me to come and check with everyone. Hope everyone survived the week and is doing okay this weekend. I know there are storms around, I have seen some stories about big waves on Lake Michigan and also heard the storm that came through here Thursday is back east now. We got a bit of snow and rain here in the valley, much more in the mountains. Some areas up north have had some avalanche warnings, but we had a bad accident last year with two people buried up at the Taos Ski Valley, so I am sure they are being super careful this year. Weather is nice again this weekend!
Busy week with some professional org events, working on the house, etc. Went to one of my old client sites for one of the meetings, where I had worked for a start up from mid 2018 through last spring and saw my old team of young techies I worked with and mentored. One of my best teams ever and have missed them, it was a heartwarming visit.
Goldie- I hope your travels go well sister. What a relief on your labs to show improvement. And thanks for your concern about my sister and her partner. Things continued to be up and down day to day, week to week.
Chi- I would like an A1C around 5.8 and it's been there before. It's been hovering around 6.0-6.1 for awhile. I asked the nurse this week if I needed to get some updated blood work before I see my PCP in Feb for my A1C and she said they can do that in the office now using the blood prick with the skin like I do daily with my monitor? Have you had that?
Cami- so you did get out with your friends for lunch? I hope you had some good eats and good girlfriend time. I do a lot of laughing when I get together with old friends, always good "remember when" stories. Sounds cold over there. We are in the throws of winter now, but counted on the calendar, seven weeks to day light savings, two months to spring. Counting......
CeliaC- that is good info to share. I know several people who have had shingles during cancer treatment, and outside of that too. I am sorry you had problems with the pneumonia shot, I had one back in my 40s due to my asthma and have had pneumonia a few times through the years after the flu. I get the flu shot yearly, but did get the H1N1 the fall of 2009 when that came out of nowhere suddenly. I am all for things that help us to stay well, there are many things we can't do anything about, right?
NM- how are things up there in cold country? I think I saw from another friend I am on FB you have some sub zero temps going on this weekend? Are you and Sadie staying warm?
Genny, Ill, Karen, Misty, what are you up to this weekend?
I continue to deep clean and declutter. I continue to find dust dinosaurs (bigger than bunnies) as I go along, as well as many things that can be purged. I went through all my CDs recently and have a bag of those to donate, and this week finished some smaller CDs I have from close to 20 years of Jazziz CDs with mixed artists that I had with the subscription to that magazine. I stopped doing that subscription a few years ago and now everything is streaming access. Ah the journey from vinyl, to 8 tracks, cassettes, CDs and now all things streaming. I got rid of my vinyl and 8 tracks long ago, but today, I put a wad of cassettes in a bag too. My thrift store has a pretty stellar reading and music room and will love the donations coming. I found a lot of cool music in the process I am listening to again.
Time to take a break from the madness that is my house and go for a swim. I think today the final playoffs for the Superbowl are happening so enjoy watching if that your thing. And if you work and have tomorrow off with MLK day, enjoy your three day weekend.

Some Sunday music for you. One of my favorite artists:

Cami,
Brrr!
Daughter and BF closed on their 1st home the same day as my cataract surgery on 1/9. Husband, Son and their friends helped them move in 1/16. No more tiny apartment with 2 cats!! A lovely home within walking distance of their work.
My 1 week Post-Op doing well on 1/17.
Stay warm one and all.

Good morning Loungettes! Got the day off today after working yesterday. Not too bad a day at work, Sundays actually are kind of nice days to work lotta family coming into visit people to talk to and getting to know people. Got a little tired of some of the bickering among the staff but that’s something I’m just gonna have to learn to live with apparently. Sadie was pretty good about the whole long day thing. But I think she’s Liking the idea of having me home today. We definitely had a nice sleep in this morning. Got a guy coming to fix the garage door today. Still waiting to hear from the electrician. Oh well such is life right?
cammy cat— I suspect you know more about computers than you let on! But it is annoying when the computer change the settings when you have it set up the way you like it isn’t it?
Jazzy— Sounds like quite a clean out of the CDs and other music you’ve done! Good for you.
Librarian— You lost 30 pounds on chemo? That’s great, a lot of women gain weight on chemo because of the steroids and other side effect management medication. Good job for you!
Goldie— Now that you mention it I do remember the trouble you had getting your mom on Services. It’s a crazy crazy world we live in these days. Glad you finally got the Faslodex! Only seven weeks, wow. The mudslide look very very nice thanks for posting.
Librarian— That is really great news that you may actually be cured! Something you don’t hear about very often in this realm. I’m so happy for you!
Chi— Don’t you just love how the way to get accurate readings for one blood test screws up accurate readings for another? Interesting information though. Thanks for sharing! Love the idea of delicious burps after the cardamom coffee!
Jazzy— Sounds like that was a really great visit you had with the old team. That must’ve made you feel really good.
Goldie— Shooting bowling balls from a cannon! That sounds like a wicked a lot of fun! Sounds like you’ve got quite the trip lined up. Love the avalanche cocktail too.
Cammy Cat— You didn’t miss my posts, I didn’t post the last couple of days because of the computer being down and it being a little bit less convenient to go back-and-forth between the Kindle and the phone. Although dictating the post is kind of fun!
Celia— Shingles can be a miserable condition from what I’ve seen. I’m glad the one you had when you were pregnant was only mild! The vaccination will certainly help prevent another one from happening. I’m still trying to work out how to get it without having to undress in the middle of a big pharmacy.
Cammy Cat-it’s pretty cold here in Maine too. Although it’s warmed up a bit yesterday temperatures are at least above the donut and the wind is dropped off so the windchill factor is not in the negative double digits anymore. Takes forever for the car to warm up though.
Celia— Great information about shingles, thanks for posting!
Jazzy— There’s been some pretty wild weather around recently. I heard some of the stories about the the big waves on the Great Lakes too. Sadie and I are staying nice and warm. And not really doing very much be honest with you other than cuddling and reading and snoozing.
Celia—

Morning sunrise
-
Good morning friends- quick hi before I get on to my day. Got some work opp things to talk to people about today, and Lowes called last night and has my window measurements in so I am heading there today to finish my order.
I saw the red sunrise developing from my back door window and quickly ran down to the end of the block for a better shot of things this am. I know the saying "red skies in the morning, sailors warning" and read that is the sun reflecting off the moisture in the clouds in the morning. We are supposed to get rain today.....
Teka- good to hear you are doing well post cataract surgery. You are in good company here on this thread, many in the process of getting it done right now. I hope you continue to recover well and such good news for your DD and BF on their new home. I am sure the cats are already telling them which room will be theirs.....
NM- good to hear you have today off. I am like you with work stuff, so many people bring their gripes in life to work, or about work. Some people complain vs. do anything because it's easier. I never have a problem listening to something serious going on, people need to feel cared about and perhaps some space to deal with a crisis, but for some, the sky is always falling, right? Hope the electrician calls soon......
Looks like the Kansas City Chiefs are the Superbowl for the first time in a long time. My Kansas friends are quite happy!
Gotta get going to my day. Have a good day and if you have today off (like NM), relax and enjoy! Cami, below is for you.....
-
Jazzy,
That's me! ;o))

Cold here today, but the sun is out so it feels good. Laundry is caught up, bathrooms are clean and I spent an hour vacuuming the cat hair off the couch. My DH husband is in charge of the vacuuming, but somehow ... This week is mainly annual doctor appointments. My annual physical with internist, DH annual check by cardiologist then a final meeting with my Oncologist. No more visits to the infusion center until the next scans in late March. February will be travel month. A trip to the mountains, a trip to the beach and a longer trip to Houston to see family. By March it will be time to get the yard in shape for the spring and summer. Really need to clean the garage. My 1970 Mustang convertible will be coming home from the shop soon. It would be nice to have a tidy place to park it. We are slowly restoring the car to how it looked when I drove it from Dallas to Columbia in 1975. DH is a pack rat and keeps most of his treasures in our basement/garage. It is full of things with no purpose. Drives me nuts, but he doesn’t mind. Hope all are looking forward to a fun week!
