Transporting Knitting Needles & Needlepoint

Knitting needles are permitted in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage.  However, there is a possibility that the needles can be perceived as a possible weapon by one of our Security Officers.  Our Security Officers have the authority to determine if an item could be used as a weapon and may not allow said item to pass through security.  We recommend the following when bring knitting needles on an airplane:  

• Circular knitting needles are recommended to be less than 31 inches in total length
• We recommend that the needles be made of bamboo or plastic (Not Metal)
• Scissors must have blunt points
• In case a Security Officer does not allow your knitting tools through security it is recommended that you carry a self addressed envelope so that you can mail your tools back to yourself as opposed to surrendering them at the security check point.
• As a precautionary measure we recommend that you carry a crochet hook with yarn to save the work you have already done in case your knitting tools are surrendered at the checkpoint

Most of the items needed to pursue a Needlepoint project are permitted in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage with the exception of circular thread cutters or any cutter with a blade contained inside.  These items cannot be taken through a security checkpoint. They must go in your checked baggage.

I know that several ladies in my quilt guild have flown recently to Quilt shows around the country and they have taken the circular thread cutters on the plane in their carry-on luggage. I guess it just matters who checks your luggage.

I have not started doing the squares yet, I will try to start this weekend.

I got the afghan that Liz showed on Feb 17th!  What a surprise!  I didn't even know that this thread existed.  I had gone to spend a long day at the hospital on Thursday, starting with port insertion early, then genetics counseling, then onc visit and chemo.  It was late, about 6:30 when we got home, and there was the package on the front porch.  What a timely gift!  It's beautiful, and I will treasure it.

Can it be machine washed?

Hi, I'd love to join in!!  Just don't let my lymphedema therapist know I'm back to knitting!!  She'll confiscate my stuff faster than the TSA ever dreamed of!  LOL

After watching this tread with the joy it brings and the love that is shared in each stitch, I finally pulled out some yarn and started crocheting a square. Now I have 3! How many do you like before we mail them. And who do I mail them to. I would assume you want quite a few and there seems to be several that join them into the afghans. So when we have the needed amount do we ask who needs them? This is a great project for me. I have arthritis in my fingers and these small squares let me finish my part before my hands give up.. It is a win win..

Any number of squares can be mailed to Liz, Vickie or myself.  When you are ready to mail some squares, send us a PM and we will give you our addresses.

I have had 12 x 12 x 12 boxes full of squares delivered..........and  envelopes with just a few squares.........ALL ARE APPRECIATED.........no designated amount needs to be sent at one time.

I think it depends on how you want to package the squares.   The large (legal size) envelopes can hold numerous squares OR a small box.

Hi girls,

I will be out of commission for about a week or so.  I'll be asking for squares soon.  I think I may have enough to get another afghan done this week.  I'll have to sit and count them.

Well, I have made 5 squares 7"x9". problem is..None of them are the same size..well, close. Is this OK.

Are you able to work with this little variance? My gauge seems fine then WHAM, by the time I finish (for what ever reason) it is a bit larger or smaller. I am going to keep going and hope I get to the perfect size eventually. And yes, I have torn out many times and started over..Realized, maybe I am getting too obsessed.. Any help will be greatly appreciated..Thanks

Ok, I forgot to ask about blocking.  Do we need to?  Advice on the best way?  I was thinking of pinning the pieces on a piece of cardboard to make sure they are the right size and then gently steam or spray with some water and let dry.  It's been a long time since I've made anything that I finished correctly!!  Thanks in advance for the tips!
