I didn't have obvious food sensitivities, although in retrospect wheat was causing a lot of problems I didn't connect at the time that went away when I eliminated it. What I have read and believe to be true is that as leaky gut syndrome heals from eliminating grains and processed foods, many of our non-grain food sensitivities will go away with it. Basically because the offending substances will pass through your digestive system, rather than absorbing into your blood stream as a result of intestinal tight-junction malfunction.
How long that takes is probably a very individual thing.
There is more we can do to heal our guts than giving up grains and junk food, and there is a lot of info online to point you in the right direction. I share Sassy's enthusiasm for cultivating a healthy gut microbiome and I hope we can bring more of that into the discussion as time goes on. A healthy gut boosts the immune system among many other benefits. It's also something I believe those of us on a ketogenic diet need to pay special attention to, and doing so has even minimized the glucose-sparing effect of keto for me that I described in my prior post.

Cowgirl agree with SpecialK-----allow 4-5 days as she said. Many many decades of research on that. Many names applied to the concept with many diets. The idea IS the same.
I'll extend the concept one step further. It applies to drugs. Never introduce more than one drug at a time. Positive or negative affects can';t be determined. Sometimes because of a condition it can't be avoided. But it becomes problematic when side affects occur.

Thanks Solfeo about supporting the Microbiome. The link I posted earlier talks of how the dysbiosis(messed up gut biome) leads to working of bad bacteria on the gut wall. This over time allows these bad guys to enter the bloodstream. These bad guys are known as "endotoxins". What we mostly think about endotoxins is they cause infection that must be treated. What the studies show is that these endotoxins are subacute i.e "Less than causing what we or our bodies react to with an immune response". What the research is showing is these endotoxins do is travel about the body.
The insulin resistance study showed that some of these endotoxins keyed into were certain cells of the liver called Kuppfer cells (possibly sic). Those cells were/are very involved with insulin resistance. Remember , please, I read this in 2015. The key is they changed them.
There are many, many Microbiome studies ongoing. Generally, what they are showing is that the GUT health is the source of health for us overall. Every body system. Total 7. GI, Neuro, Cardiovascular, Integumentary(skin), Musculoskeletal, Genitourinary, Endocrine. Whew, I remembered them all. Hahahah.
If you read page 3 of the link you will see that my research based on all the microbiome research from page 1, lead to the paleo diet. I was surprised. Did I indulge into paleo. No. Do I support paleo. YES........ I'm a horse if you get the analogy. Will I be like the horse in the Emerald City (Wizard of OZ). Hoping. i.e Horse of Different Color.
My joke/ comment on many things when presented with new information that counters old information is "That puts a different color on the horse"
-
Sas - be prepared, we're gearing up to get you fitted with a paleo harness, dragging you to the river,and making you drink the biome enriched water LOL...your time is near my friend!
-
Hahhahaahhahaha.................okaaaay
Did you go see my pictures?

I can't resist a dare, Egads, so here I am on Day Two of my paleo journey. Yesterday was the perfect day to begin; we're just back from vacation so I was too busy today to think about the food I was giving up! (My DH claims my favorite food groups are chocolate & cheese.) While I'd love to lose a few pounds (mostly for my arthritic knees) I'm primarily interested in improving my health & regaining some of the energy that breast cancer & anastrozole have sucked out of me and it sounds like paleo might be the answer I'm seeking!
You may be sorry you asked me to join you here, though, because I will probably drive you insane with questions. (I can be a bit compulsive when I have a new "project".) Today's questions:
Can I eat salmon that is smoked before it's grilled? (One of my favourite restaurants does this & it's awesome.)
And, can you suggest healthy post-workout snacks? I leave the gym fantasizing about potato chips & candy bars (sometimes even together!) & if I don't have something else available I'm going to have plenty to discuss at your weekly confessionals.
Thank you so much for starting this discussion. And thanks to everyone who participates here. It's uplifting to see so much enthusiasm & support. And it's really nice to focus on (or, in my case, obsess about) something besides BC for awhile!
-
Welcome JKL......, Cowgirl aand I are starting this week too.
Egads besides weighing in what should I drink and eat first think tomorrow. I have bacon and eggs.
please, if you could write the list of 10-15 items to have in the house. I'm going shopping tomorrow afternoon.
-
SAS - just commented in insomniacs abyour pics...loved them! Your wedding dress is too cool!
JKL - you made it YAY!! Welcome to our community! Hope the vakay was nice, you'll have to tell us all about it. Congrats on day 2! Chocolate and cheese...a girl after my own heart...wish cheese liked me as much as I liked it lol! Chocolate is paleo if you stick to the dark stuff...85%is best, but no lower than 70%...read your labels for carbs and sugars. (How's that for ruining your day? Lol!) Smoked salmon is paleo/primal approved, however (and you know this was coming), be mindful that most manufacturers use hellishly high sodium levels, nitrates and farmed fish. Your best bet is to eat hot smoked wild caught salmon from a reputable dealer that isn't adding in all the carcinogenic chemicals. Oddly enough cold smoked salmon destroys more of the omega 3 than the hot smoked...you want the omega stable, so stick to hot. All us paleo chicks are hot dontcha' know! There is a weak link to cancer with some smoked salmon and a stronglink with all lunch meats (avoid deli meats like the plague), however smoked salmon is doable from the right vendor....or from your own smoker. If this is an occasional treat at your fav restaurant then I wouldn't worry to much if you're eating clean and working out. Just keep it to a dull roar. Post workout snacks (lol@ chips and chocolate..salty and sweet are awesome!) should always include a complex carb and protein...sweet potato (make your own healthy chips) is optimal along with eggs, fish or poultry. I usually make a omelette and follow with an apple. All those 'health bars' you see are usually loaded with sugar. Also, that water bottle you're carrying out of the gym...drink a full one before you leave...tells your tummy to shut up (a least until you get home to the fridge lol). Choc and potato chips...no...sorry! Lol! Here's a few links to get your workout snacking started:
http://www.crossfitsanitas.com/clean-challenge-support-day-4-recovery/
https://blog.paleohacks.com/post-workout-snacks/
I'd never be sorry you joined...and we love questions, so ask as many as your lil' heart desires! You might be sorry you joined when we take your choc bars and chips away LOL! One last thing, paleo isn't a diet, it's a lifestyle that includes decompressing and peace. Your statement about not focusing on cancer absolutely fills that bill, so you're definitely on the right path....I feel the same...need to escape it! The Monday confessional gives us enough laughs to decompress....so jump right in, it's a safe judgement free zone...all up to you. Glad you're here!
How is everyone else doing today?...a few of us were going squeaky clean this week. I'm holding tight to clean....well except for one thing. Apparently there is a warrant out for my arrest. Just to see if anyone actually read this far I'll hold back the details and tell if asked
))))))

So Egads what did you do???? I seen the posters all the way down here in little o'Wyoming!
No lunch meat, that is doable, but what about ham? I have a few recipes calling for ham (from a Keto book), chicken cordon Blue....
Ladies I have a wonderful cookbook from the Library right now, that I am likely going to have to buy. Usually I will take them out and type up any recipe that seems appealing to me, this one has too many to type up! Keto Comfort Foods by Maria Emmerich. Got to watch those calories as well as carbs, but may I just say the pictures alone look oh so yummy!!!
Day 6, with one little ooops on a breakfast smoothie loaded with bad stuff 2 days ago. Got rid of those immediately!
Any tips on where to buy stuff cheap? So far Amazon has been the cheapest I have found for ingredients that may be needed for recipes.

Hmmmmm. . . definitely not committing to anything but I have been a bad girl for several. . . months <ahem> and paleo is definitely the direction I'll be going. Hello Egads!! Did not know this was your thread. In a nutshell, about two years ago I had a conversation with my MO that led to me trying intermittent fasting, plus I upped my gym time (realistically, probably a little more than was sustainable) and it all worked well--lost ~35 pounds in less than 8-10 months, *some* of which have crept back but I haven't gotten on a scale in close to a year so I remain blissfully ignorant. I am quick to cut myself slack--any time I'm with family or have a big event, I eat/drink what I want. And of course while I'm in tx it's just been Treat City every day. One of my DILs is going to start Whole 30 shortly, and I told her that I won't do that but I need to get back to a better food/exercise pattern. (Okay--another excuse: my youngest came home for the first time in two years this past week. He's the one who graduated from college in early May and I've been eating/drinking like there's no tomorrow ever since. I take him to the airport today so it'll just be hubs and me for the foreseeable future.)
So. Today it starts with no drinking until. . . ? What worked for me two years ago was to set the rule that I only drink when we're out or entertaining. That seems doable, right???
<And Egads--I walked out to get the mail yesterday only to find some kind of legal summons thing stuck in my fence. Apparently related to a $600 medical bill from my BC two years ago. I cleared it up with a phone call but *man* will something like that mess with your chi. Let me know where to send the cake with the file in it.>

Sas - I missed your last post - My Apologies!!!! YAY!! You're starting!!!!!!! Bacon and eggs was my very first paleo brekkie. Bacon as you know is in the deli meat realm. If you can find nitrate free, grass fed and it doesn't cost so much that it forces you to take out a second mortgage you'd be best going that way. The regular however is ok if you keep it to a very dull roar. I make my own breakfast sausage and patties and freeze so that my intake is lower (like 2-3 times a month on the good stuff). That said there are billions of paleo folks that buy regular meats. I still see it healthier than the 'old' processed way of eating. Buy the best you can afford. No one needs to be going broke over this! I've listed your grocery items below.....let us know how the shopping goes...and again....YAY YOU!!!
Vamp - Ham falls into the deli meat category. If you're buying a chunk of it, or one of those ham steaks (the most common type in Ontario grocery stores I think is Cook's love that stuff lol) they still usually include nitrates and HUGE sodium levels (some peeps rinse/soak them before cooking to lessen the damage). Again, like bacon above, if it's occasional I don't see a problem (unless you have high blood pressure, the sodium in this stuff is really nuts!), so make your recipe, just don't make it a regular at your table. Fresh meats are always the best, buy the best you can afford. Please post some of the recipes from you book as you try them....the cordon blue sounds peachy! Oh and btw, the smoothie, meh, we won't count that this week and put you on parole lol, you're still clean! What kind of items you looking to buy cheap?
Processed meat post coming....stay tuned all!!
INGERP!!!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome!!! (Ladies, I hope and pray Ingerp gives us a shot....Ingerp is some of the best kind of peeps you'll find on BCO, kickass sense of humour and well, just awesome!). If you can still get your head through the door now, It's great to see you here. You're not committed? We'll have you committed *nuk nuk nuk*. Cleaner eating is def the best pathway to take, but you're still in the midst of chemo girlfriend so be kind to yourself (as you are) we don't mind if a package of cheetos or tub of ben n' jerrys (wink) slips in here and there, it's totally understandable and I for one support you in doing whatever you want for now. After chemo, well, we'll hunt you down with the dogs of hell - tally ho! LOL! Your drinking only when entertaining is basically the way I roll and is totally doable. Heck, every Friday night I entertain my self with a nice glass of red. I'm find myself highly entertaining....no one else does, but whatever
) Awwwww, I knew you'd read through, and the cake/file offer brought a tear to my eye. Actually it was a phone message from Canada Revenue Agency (equivalent to the IRS) informing me they had a warrant issued and that at any moment the RCMP would be busting down my door and hauling my derriere off to jail for unpaid taxes. It's a lovely little phone scam (very much like the Microsoft one) that is done to scare the poop out of you, and money out of your wallet. It's worked on several seniors here.....there is a special spot in hell reserved for the mongrels that do this! Sounds like the visit was great, hope they did the laundry for you! Enjoy your drink free day.....eat clean and let us know how the 'dry' day goes! PS, intermittent fasting & chemo to reduce SE....you might find this article interesting: https://www.marksdailyapple.com/fasting-cancer/
Sas's Shopping List - buy organic if possible within budget:
- Eggs (I buy 2-3 dozen a week, keep a doz boiled in fridge for salad & snacks)
- Plenty of salad greens: good for, well, salads lol, but handy to toss into omelettes etc..
- Cauliflower I buy at least 2 per week - the darling of the paleo world. Good for 'rice', mash, roasting, steaming....and baked goods. Yup.
- Broccoli, same as above except for baked goods. blech.
- Brussels Sprouts - Momma said eat them, so you should!
- Avocado - great for everything, 1/2 is a great snack
- Kale (collards etc) use as a 'wrap' and other obvious uses, sautéed in garlic, yum.
- Sweet potato - another darling, good for everything cauliflower is.
- Fruit - enough for 1 to 2 servings per day, berries are best
- Meats - chicken, beef, pork, fish whatever cuts you prefer. again best you can afford, grass fed optimal, hormone/antibiotic free is good.
- Avocado Oil & Coconut Oil - pantry must!
- Coconut milk (canned) 2-3 cans. Used in so many paleo recipes, pantry must
- Almonds (best) or nuts for small snacks. Raw is best.
-
Egads--deflating my head as I type and even if the phone call had been real, when the RCMP knocks on your door don't they just bring you a doughnut, apologize for interrupting whatever you were doing, and then politely ask you to stop whatever nefarious activity you were engaged in??
-
Ingerp - lol, I'd be afraid they'd find and use my 'stash' LOL!! Being Canuck too I'd have to share *sigh*.
))))
Everyone - Sorry to hog up the page, buttttttttttttt……………….Yup, I haven't forgotten that it's...…….

Perfect timing. Between getting ready for my kid's visit and having him here, I haven't been to the gym in two weeks. I will go after work, probably just for a little cardio, but time to get back on that train. Thanks for the push!! (Also first time I'll have been there since the short buzz--aiyiyi!!)
-
Awwww, darlin, you look seriously gorgeous with the buzz, no worries. Top it with the tiara for a bit o' bling...that'll get tongues wagging
))) Happy cardio!
-
Re: the tiara, of course I have several options. . . ;-)

Good Morning Cave Chicks!
Ok, so trying hard to find the balance between the advice here and the following the program that I have been on for 2 1/2 years, which is based on paleo... trying to justify diary, (cuz i love it, how hard is it to say no to cheese??) Holding up mostly ok.. with the small cheat of a cookie or 2 a day.. and last night, dinner at a good ole jersey diner - omlette with spinach, mushrooms and what they said was cheddar cheese. (when I got it I swore it was american..yuck). some hash browns that had some vegs in it, and couldn't resist, a slice of rye toast. But other than that, been sticking to it this week. I avoid a lot of the wheat, but it doesn't really bother me too much....unfortunately.. it would be easier if it did!!
Cardio class monday night, even though I thought I was too tired.. almost ditched it and went for a walk instead, but changed my mind and drove my ass to class at 8:30 pm.
Last night was upper body workout... all done with free weights.. chest presses, bicep curls, hammer curls, shoulder presses, tri-extensions etc. He had us start with heavy weights for short amount of reps, then increase the reps with a medium weight.. Starting to get my weight back as I was using 12lbs! a way to go to get back to my 20's but.. hey, still hurts and burning those calories!!
tonight is cardio again.. Breakfast was crushed rice cake, ( supplemented with a small amount of rice chex because i was only had 1 rice cake left) banana, almond milk and a half scoop of protein powder...done with my carbs for the day... (Its a fat day! yay!)
Egads, tell me where I can visit you in jail! I will house sit for you while you are there and to get out of the US until the mid-term elections!

Hi folks, I just started lurking. I was very successful on Atkins about ten years ago but constipation was bad. And I discovered that eggs raised my cholesterol. I'll be starting colonoscopy prep next week so paleo is out until after that.
How do you get fiber from paleo? And if you're lucky enough to live near a Trader Joes, they have frozen cauliflower rice that cooks up great in olive oil.
-
Corky - Hiya and welcome! Glad to see you post. Colonoscopy....oh lovely. I know them well. I'm hoping your prep is in the new pill form and that you don't have to drink the 400 gallons of prep *gasp* drink all day long....the prep is worse than the actual procedure! I'll sincerely be with you in spirit, been there, and while it's not the end of the world, it isn't pleasant. Constipation? Tons of raw veg, tender crisp cooked veg and the winners: psyllium husks and flax seeds. A couple of tbsp. each per day. Sprinkle in salads, soups, stews....whatever you can get them in. Usually works like a charm for me. Here's a link to a hot breakfast cereal you can make....just pop some psyllium husk into the mix as well...it's one that gets me moving: https://www.dietplan-101.com/low-carb-hot-cinnamon... Please let us know how the scope goes!
Map - I think I may have found my paleo gym partner in you....awesome workout girlfriend!! We can compare sweat ratios and fat levels LOL!! Rice & wheat. Ever consider dumping these two for a week or two? If you do give it a shot you might be surprised at how you feel when you re-incorporate it back onto your table. Just a thought.....you're still a swolle sister LOL!
So I practiced what I preached and did my workout earlier today. Map's workout is pretty close too mine, free weights, a few machines, cardio, 3 sets 15 reps....and in case anyone was wondering, yes I did my squats LOL, lunges too. I left the gym feeling all puffed up and proud. Tripped over my own feet in the parking lot. Looked like an idiot *snort* Karma....it's a …….
)))))
-
Egads, thanks. No, my dr. does things the old-fashioned way, drinking the yucky drink. And I have to drink 1.5 jugs due to my tendency toward constipation. During Atkins I used to eat flax and still got constipated. Lucky me.
-
Newbie reporting in! Just got home from two hours at the gym so I'm feeling pretty good (it was a weightlifting & aerobics day for me). Egads, I took your advice & came home to a hard-boiled egg & an apple so I avoided the chocolate covered potato chips that were calling my name.
Vamp, I'm going to look for that cookbook - thanks for the recommendation. Corky, I will definitely try that cauliflower rice; sounds yummy.
Hi, Ingerp, it's nice to see another Virginia girl here! Even though my DH is a dyed-in-the-wool Blue Devil, some of my favorite people are Cavaliers! I was just down in Charlottesville on a girls' trip. We spent a gorgeous day at the Pippin Hill Vineyard.
And Map, can I help you house sit if Egads gets hauled off in cuffs? Canada is sounding better every day, especially now that Justice Kennedy has announced his retirement. Sigh ...

Pippin Hill is not far from my house and I never minded Duke. Always very smart fans at basketball games. I did drag my saggy butt to the gym for the first time in two weeks. Just 20 minutes on the elliptical and half an hour on the bike. Burgers for dinner (I’ve been pushing protein through tx) and I will have a bun because we have to eat up some leftovers from the barbecue we had over the weekend. First night without wine in about a month and a half so go me
-
**hums ‘Carry me back to old Virginny’ in the background, whilst JKL & Ingerp chat**
))
Corky - I assume you’re keeping well hydrated? Have you tried psyllium husk? My dad suffered terribly with constipation. He used an old trick my great grandmother concocted..boil a whole onion until soft in a small pan with enough water just to cover. Let the whole thing cool, eat the onion and drink the water. He followed with a few prunes. Worked. Just don’t try this before the scope prep..you’d be borrowing trouble lol.
JKL - Look at you go! All gym-ish and eating right....high 5s!!! We hid the chips and choc on you while you were out ;p we didn’t eat them, honest! Anyone have any tips for removing grease and choc stains from my shirt??
))
Ingerp - indeed go you! Your cardio is impressive, especially after work AND during tx! Ya’ make us proud! Betcha’ lookin’ fine in yo’ bling tiara too! Any reaction to the new hair?
Map & JKL - Don’t think I didn’t notice neither one of you offered to go my bail!! Stay out of JLK’s hidden chips and choc while you house sit! Do me a big please and put extra starch in my DH’s undies (yes laundry is expected), he didn’t offer bail either!!
)))
Y’all did good today...and earned 3 gold mastodon tusks and a T-Rex cocktail for the effort
-
Egads, we're going to have to take up a collection for your bail. All this paleo food you're pushing is so expensive that none of us have enough $$$$ to cover your bail on our own!
-
The gym I belong to has several locations and since dx I’ve been going to a little one west of me—not technically in Cville but a town called Crozet. I was there quite a bit after the long buzz and yesterday I just strolled on in with my ballcap. NBD. :-) (Except I run hot and I’d just as soon not have had it on. Wondering if I should get some sporty mesh hot weather something?)
-
Ingerp - I would ditch the hat and run free. I saw your picture, the buzz really doesn't scream 'chemo' AT ALL. You look great. So lucky, I looked like this:
JKL - (I always have the urge to type JFK lol!) - Good point, true about the cost. Oh lord, all they serve in prison is sandwiches and mashed potato.....any idea if the food is better in 'the hole'. I'll probably have to spend most of my time there for inciting riots over food quality.
)
-
Things I have learned:
When starting on MCT oil, I must use on a full stomach no matter how little the amount. MCT oil is good for memory loss! Noticed my memory slipping badly lately and talked to the health store lady, MCT is best answer to helping with this.
Eating LCHF makes me feel full, I don't have the "hanger" any more! Now to break the habitual eating pattern!
Corky, I have struggled with constipation for as long as I can remember this is what works for me and has for many others.... Cleansemore found in the Health food sections and Health Food stores, likely online as well. I have also used Shaklee's Herb-Lax. I believe the MCT oil is also good for constipation, which could explain why I don't need 5 Herb-lax to go anymore and back down to 2, possibly 1 starting tonight. Good luck, being constipated is the worst.
Egads - We will hold a fundraiser to get you out! You will starve in jail....although my husband said my Keto bread looked like food served to inmates! Said it would fit perfectly in there slotted pans. Food I was talking about would be almond flour, MCT oil, Swerve, etc. I may have to check the difference in the states for cost seeing as we are a border city...hummm.
So day 7 today! After I send the kid off to school, my plan is to try a step aerobic video. I use to do them all the time until my second surgery. I have done some since, but found I struggle to finish the video. I am hoping with the breathing issue figured out and new diet today will be different!
Have a great day everyone!!
-
I don't want to scare anybody at the gym, and maybe I'll just sweat a little more and lose some more lubs! (Okay I know water weight doesn't count, but a gal can dream, can't she?) And my plan is to start re-growing hair by Labor Day and it helps to know the Hot Head is temporary. I'm actually kind of looking forward to rocking a cool short haircut through the holidays. Today (and probably many days going forward) will probably just be more elliptical/stationary bike. I also will not drink tonight so, again, ray rah Inger!! This group is good for me!
-
Egads,
I'll try to post bail, but can I still live with you?? Me and JKL and our families are running scared.... That picture looks like Jeff Sessions!! I didn't mind my bald head during chemo. It was during winter/spring and I just wore a knit hat.. I had wig and hated it.. too hot. My co-workers all told me I had a good head, so after 2 days, "Sharon" stayed home. I only wore her when I was at some official function and my mom was around.
Inerp-I wore a pink paisley bandanna on my head at the gym during chemo... All my gym buddies wore them with me in solidarity. It was a beautiful thing. Embrace the bald!! And all the hair loss! Showers are quicker, no shaving or waxing needed! And you can drive with the windows down and sunroof open and not worry about hair getting in your mouth and eyes! When my hair did grow back, I was given so many compliments on the shortness, I'm keeping it. Not quite a buzz, but very short. Love it!!
JKL- I was so depressed last night, after the gym I got ice cream.. with chocolate, with strawberries, walnuts and whipped cream.. Why does it matter any more, we're all f@## anyway.. sigh... At least at this point I don't have to worry about "reproductive rights", for myself anyway...
Corky- constipation.. ug.. I feel you! My angel chemo nurse gave me 2 great ideas that helped me.. 1- boil lemon rind in water and drink a glass every morning. That really really helped.. (as well as avoiding the anti-nauseous meds as much as possible) and 2, if you are in the Northeast, find a White Castle.. not paleo, or clean but I've been told really does the trick! (personally I'm not a fan, and I didn't have to resort to that.. but I'm told it works like a charm!)
I have dropped white rice, and most wheat.. just not completely.. I was just hungry yesterday morning and I didn't have time to make my usual egg whites.. When I started this journey, I was sooo good and if I had white bread or pizza or anything like that, ug my tummy!!! but since chemo and (done over a year now except for the herceptin which ended in Dec) I haven't had that issue.. kind wish i did.. it was easier to say no!!!
Today is leg day!! Can you say #SquatGoals ? Cardio last night was almost fun! New trainer at class. She was 12, but effective and NO BURPEES!! (Still can't handle them. Will I ever get back there?? ug.. )
Gonna be a tough food day.. lunch being brought in and I didn't make my salad.. office birthday celebrations.. we'll see if I can be strong.
Have a great day CAVE CHICKS!!
