Egads - Thanks for the links for dressings and such. I did find some Primal Kitchen Ranch and used it on a salad today at lunch along with my mesquite/pecan blend grilled pork loin. As far as the coke thing, I had a Diet Dr. Pepper addiction. I had it every day except weekends and drank it in substantial quantities. I gave it up maybe a year ago. I used a Soda Stream and went to just carbonating my water and adding natural flavoring with no sweetener. I realize that was a better choice but in January after diagnosis of the numerous things from my colonoscopy/endoscopy and eventually celiac, I just drink plain ol' water. Not very exciting but trying to be good and get as much of my insides healed up as I can. I on rare occasion might drink half of a root beer.
MAP - I definitely agree that good birch beer is a good occasional treat!
Vampeyes - I hope the air guy got your unit working again.
-
Egads, I've been thinking about your original "Two Cent Tuesday" post. To me, denial is just another way of describing choice. I'm making an affirmative choice to eat certain things, not denying myself other foods. My choices are based on my personal needs & what I believe will best serve those needs.
I understand that not everyone will make the same choices - & that's okay. I try not to take this personally. I'm with DearLife on this, I just want to see everyone informed before they make their decisions.
BC has affected all of us in different ways. What we learn from our doctors & our own research & what we bring from our individual backgrounds also differs. With all these different attitudes & all this conflicting information, it's amazing to me that we can find any consensus at all!
Egads, it seems to me that you're a coach by nature. You sincerely want to help others through education & encouragement. That's why we love you & listen to you & spend our time on this thread. But even the best coach won't get through to everyone. Don't take it personally; you're still making a tremendous difference with those of us who are here!
Thanks for the dressing recipes - they're just what I need! And welcome Dear Life & Warrior - the more, the merrier!
-
Over the years, I've gotten into some disagreements with people over what to eat, without even caring to - meaning I was just reporting what I do and why! I truly don't care what anyone else chooses. I'm aware that not everyone will believe this diet is good. Yes I've heard them say moderation is OK, but I am motivated every day by the fear that what I put in my mouth is going to kill me- plain and simple. I know others think that not eating a donut when they want, or wine, or pizza, is worse than dying. OK. That's not true for me. My motto is, you do you, I'll do me. I'm an experiment of one and am only responsible for myself.

Warrior - WOOT!! We gots' us a vegan ladies...quick hide the meat!! Only polite seeing it's your first visit, next time though, dish washing will be on the agenda
Seriously though, I'm so glad you stepped out of the lurker zone and joined in! I see a good mix of diets/opinions/knowledge on this thread as a win-win for us all. We'll learn...yay! The veggie folks Can provide great new ideas for side dishes, and the paleo peeps have some awesome vegan friendly dessert ideas up our sleeves...we can't lose! No one here is offended by great ideas, and as I said previously, there aren't many recipes that can't be tweaked. You're a vegan that doesn't touch legumes, rice or starchy tubers? You're like a paleo unicorn!!
)) Big welcome to you!
DearLife - No apologies necessary, we aren't offended seeing/reading about things we've cut. Beans are not banned totally. Paleo/primal folks like myself acknowledge the amazing nutritional profile legumes provide. 'Recarbing' (if sluggish or suffering carb flu) occasionally is done with beans (soaked well!) or quinoa, albeit in VERY small quantities. The problem many of us have though (besides the carbs) is the inflammatory effect it has, especially for those with GI issues. Hence why I obstain completely. Others partake. Can't say I don't miss my grandmothers beans, she would dig a hole in the ground, throw in hot coals, bury the pot and let them slow cook all day. They were outstanding!! (Maritime tradition). Wine, oh hell yeah! Red is a paleo 'wise indulgence' so you're in good company!!
Cowgirl - You made me drool on my iPhone with your dinner menu...please post recipe!! I used to be a die hard coke drinker, but like you it's water most of the time, occasional lime Perrier or Pelligrino if I'm feeling sassy. Good lord I just realized I called Map's beer - root beer...I officially suck LOL!! Are you buying Primal Kitchen online?
Vamp - I'm hoping the AC is going full blast...this heat can't be easy your breathing right now!!
JKL - I think I was more disturbed than anything...seeing a group of peeps condone 'bad' and diss'ing 'good'...even exercise. I'm not taking it personally, I guess I just wish good health for all. Your point (and DearLife's) is def a better way to look at it all. Choices, we can't all have the same....and that's ok. Enjoy those dressings! Thank you so much for your kind words, ya' made me blush....love you right back...all of you in fact. Couldn't have found a finer group of people...a community in the making! Hugs!
TwoH - Great sentiments, and it would honestly break my heart to see disagreements happen here...over wheat, so wrong! I'm sorry that happened to you! Love your 'you do you, I'll do me' motto. Spot on...and words to live by. Can I borrow it with a twist? 'You do you, I'll do George Clooney'
)))) I need to be put away somewhere! Har!
Well cave peeps it's been an interesting day on our thread...we bagged one paleo unicorn and a hybrid vegetarian...how lucky are we?? Fun times ahead fo' sho'....looking forward to the convos! As for Two Cent Tuesday, I'm thinking it should be a regular...toss out ideas, post your own, whatever....the discussion has been enlightening, and thankfully no one got hurt!
Great, now I'm craving pizza and a coke *sigh* meh, there's paleo sub, no worries!
Still no takers on the crickets???

Taking a break from the fireworks to talk about. . . beans. I didn’t consciously know they were a paleo no-no, although it makes sense. Sitting down here in the mid-Atlantic happy to have an excuse not to eat them. I’m afraid of them. Concerned my insides will explode.
Happy Fourth to all the ‘muricans!!
-
Mid-Atlantic?Doing the yacht thing...sipping champagne?
-
I wish. Not technically mid-Atlantic. Just what we call this part of the Lower 48. ;-)
-
Ahhhhh I see...rats! I need a friend with a yacht. Well I hope the celebrations are good for you today...how you feeling? Holding up?
-
Egads I can offer you old inner tubes tied together with string. I am good, although increasingly blah/tired as the weeks go by. Trying not to wish July away but at the end of this month I'll only have one Taxol left. R-e-a-l-l-y looking forward to that.
-
Ingerp, inner tubes and string...gosh, you're too good to me!! I'll bring a bottle of Lonesome Charlie and a transistor radio, partay! Oh the tired/blah, it stinks! You're doing so well though, and still lookin' mighty purdy….you hang in, I know time drags right now. Funny, I was finished up July 2013.....one summer that couldn't have ended fast enough for me either. Big energizing hugs to you!
-
I had chemo in the summer too. About the only thing good about that summer was I didn't have to go to work and spending more time with my son! Next summer will be better.
Ingerp, certain foods have anti-nutrients that the original Paleo diet (Loren Cordain) doesn't believe in eating. White potatoes, quinoa and beans are in that category. I'm not real sure how I feel about that. Egads, what do you think? There are plenty of traditional methods of cooking foods that destroy a lot of those (long soaking and cooking), and so I'm not so sure I'm anti-bean, plus a lot of Blue Zone cultures eat beans. I don't eat white potato because I will instantly gain weight. I don't eat beans because no one in my house hold can tolerate them. The interesting thing is DH had good results on his digestive system eating quinoa. They have saponins that cause intestinal inflammation if not processed out, but he loved what it did for him when soaked properly. Since he was diagnosed with diabetes, he doesn't eat it anymore due to the carb level.
Friend with a yacht sounds good. Alas, I am not that friend either. Just the other day I was thinking that at some point, I should have bought a boat. But then there is college and medical bills. For sure, it will never be a yacht.
-
Egads - Thank you for the 4th of July wishes for the USA! Sorry I wasn't on here last Sunday on Canada Day. Hope you northern neighbors had a good one! I still remember part of a song I learned back in high school French class that translates to: "I love my country in the winter". Do you know which song that would be? Please take Justin Beiber back but you can leave Wayne Gretzky.
My lunch was delicious! The pork loin is very simple to prepare but expensive if you don't have the ingredients (a pellet grill). All I did was grill a pork loin on the grill Sunday evening so we would have it for Sunday supper and then cut up for both of our lunches for the week. We used Green Mountain's Texas blend pellets for the smoked taste, which my husband said is actually a mesquite/hickory blend not mesquite/pecan. We do not season with any herbs, rubs or salts. It is grilled at 350 degrees F. Pellet grills are wonderful and we use ours all year long. The Primal Kitchen Ranch dressing I was actually able to buy in the town closest to me that has a Kroger grocery store that has put in a small "health food" section a couple of years ago. The only Primal Kitchen products they have are a couple of the dressings and mayo. This store has been a big help as they have some gluten free products. I am still a definite no on the crickets.
Ingerp - Yep, beans other than green beans scare the bejeezies out of me too!
TwoHobbies - I know what you mean about people having disagreements over diet. I am with you. I have a friend that really pushes a health product that contains moringa in it. I did my research and moringa is highly progestogenic and therefore not in my best interest to be consuming daily. I at least know this friend truly believes in what she is selling but worry that other ER+ PR+ breast cancer survivors may be taking this and not know the risks. On the other hand, I work with a lady that always belittles me. Her latest was when she made a birthday cake for her assistant and came by my office to tell me and since her feelings get easily hurt, I told her that I had just been diagnosed with celiac disease and would come back to the kitchen area and celebrate but would not be eating any cake and didn't want her to think I was mad or anything at her. Her response was that she has a niece with celiac and it is no big deal. She obviously has no idea what she is talking about and what gluten does to the insides of a celiac. Some people are just ignorant.
JKL - Yes, I agree with you on the choices. I just think that a lot of us are doing our best with the information we have, whether from doctors or research and honestly, a lot of times it is confusing. On this site there are so many people eating different ways and I have always taken the approach that we are all just trying to do what we think will help us be healthy and survive cancer and hopefully for those of us in remission prevent it from coming back. Also, trying to balance other health issues that arise whether from cancer treatment or unrelated makes requires some of us to take different routes. We are definitely lucky to have Egads as our coach and cheerleader!
Vampeyes - I hope your place is so cool that you can wear a flannel shirt and a sweater if you want.
Warrior and DearLife - Welcome!
-
Ingerp - Count me in on the inner tubes and the string but make mine rope. I used to love tubing down the Salt River when I was younger.
-
TwoH - Beans beans good for the heart....oh that old ditty, I won't go 4 year old on y'all and continue. Yes, beans hold an amazingly nice nutritional profile...and are a paleo/primal grey area. Problem lies in the toxins (if not properly soaked). 'Recarbing' (if sluggish or suffering carb flu) occasionally is done with beans (soaked well!) or quinoa, albeit in VERY small quantities. If you're going to 'cheat' beans & quinoa give the best bang for the buck. A little scoop on Mexican is primal. The problem many of us have though (besides the carbs) is the inflammatory effect it has, especially for those with diabetes, GI & joint issues. Hence why I abstain completely. White potatoes are also impressive nutritionally, but like you, it's a belly builder. I partake at Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter only or rarely eat one half if I'm doing Greek.
Cowgirl - I'll trade you one Bieber for a Gerrard Butler....or a Clooney!!
)))) DANG IT.....I'm praying Primal Kitchen hits our shelves soon, you're so lucky! Now I'm going to have to investigate pellet cookers...I need that roast! Thank you for posting! Oh btw, awesome paleo methods....leftover dinner is always lunch the next day here, sometimes even breakfast! Cooking extra is habit now.
Still no cricket takers. *sigh*

I think I found my new signature...I’m a paleo unicorn;)))!! Love it Hahahaha! I love sharing recipes. Thank you for the shout out Egads!
I’ve been vegan for many years, but after my surgery 4/25, I couldn’t exercise and was looking for a diet that was healthy, nutritious and could help to eliminate toxins (aka stray cancer cells) from my system. I’m a research gal so I delved into the world of keto and went from there. It was really a type of elimination diet I think. I know now that I can’t handle large amounts of fat. But eliminating/limitsugars, carbs has helped tremendously. I’ve read the Wheat Belly too, that was an eye opener, and am currently reading the Plant Paradox. So that’s how I’ve found myself here! I’m you guys without the meat 😊
Cowgal, I’ve been reading into some research lately about progesterone and how it slows tumor growth and helps to balance estrogen. I think Adatigens like moringa are interesting in that respect. I have a drink mix that I use that contains fresh greens with adaptogenic herbs, and biotin. I really like it.
Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! Happy Fourth to you all! 🎆
-
Cowgirl - Is this the song?:
Warrior - We hereby dub thee Paleo Unicorn. You do realize that when put into initials you'll be P U? . LOL, we'll stick to the long version. Plant paradox is on my reading list, so lots to discuss soon. I've come to realize over the years that there is a paradox with every food....trick is getting up to snuff on balancing it all. I think we have a good start here. Look forward to your posts!
-
Egads - Yes! That is the song!
-
A Quebec Canadian classic! Awesome it was sung south of the border! Not surprising that it wasn't included in the Ontario line up LOL!
-
Warrior - I am very confused about progesterone for us ER+ PR+ survivors. I thought we had to avoid them both.
Egads - I highly recommend a pellet grill. You can control the heat better than a regular grill and you don't heat up your house in the summer! Some of my friends do all of their baking in them.
-
Egads - We will give you Butler and Clooney but you have to take back Bieber and we are keeping Dierks!
-
Cowgirl - Ok, but we want a signing bonus and you get stuck with William Shatner *cue original star trek theme*
-
Cowgirl & Egads - that's not a good deal for Bieber, we must insist on Dierks as well!
Welcome to DearlLife and our very own unicorn Warrior!
No air yet - they have to order a part. *sigh
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY my american friends!!
I have also given up on the scale, it does make me wonder if I am doing this paleo diet wrong somehow though!
Any takers want my cold?
Egads - send the cricket muffin in the mail, I'll give it a try! I trust you.
-
Happy Fourth to all! And Egads, I'm watching you - keep your hands off our Clooney! As to Bieber, I think my 10-year-old DGD sums it up well " I like his music but he's no role model"!
Cowgal, you are so right about diet confusion. When I saw a survivorship oncologist for a 2d opinion, she assured me that sugar (in moderate amounts) was not a problem. She believed exercise was the only lifestyle change critical to fighting a recurrence. Yet her cancer center's magazine (which I skimmed while waiting to be seen) had an article entitled Sugar Feeds Cancer. If the doctors don't even agree, how are we supposed figure this out? And your pork loin sounds delish; I'm going to have to Google pellet grills!
TwoH, I agree that a lot of well-meaning people push "remedies" on us that are anything but! A close friend suggested I take synthetic estrogen for my hot flashes since it wouldn't feed my cancer the way "real" estrogen would. Really?
Personally, I love pinto beans & ham (it's a yummy southern thing served with a skillet of cornbread) but I don't fix it often. The beans soak overnight, then simmer all day so I guess that could qualify as an occasional "healthy" cheat? However, with the current heat & humidity here, I won't be cooking them anytime soon!
Ingerp & Egads, we had a 22 ft sailboat for a few years & twice sailed up the Potomac & anchored to watch the fireworks exploding over DC on the Fourth. It was truly magical. Sold it long ago ... boats truly are money pits!
Vamp, hope you're staying cool!
Enjoy the holiday!!!
-
Vampeyes, Egads and JKL - Since JKL won't allow Clooney (for the record I was willing), we will send Brad Pitt in his place. No can do on Dierks Bentley. He's from my home state and I can't send my home boy. We will do the signing bonus with Shatner and just for reference for future negotiations, George Strait is non-negotiable...he stays here!
-
I'm sorry. It has to be Clooney or nothing.
-
Just popping in to share this link for crock pot Paleo recipes from paleogrubs.com, if anyone is interested.
-
-
This is too fun!! You've all got me cracked up!
Ok….so now I'm completely befuddled as to where the negotiations are at....sooooo
The American Cavies can keep Clooney, George Strait, Dierk, We'll keep our Canadian Dudes:
Ryan
Keanu
The other Ryan
Stephen
Patrick
Taylor
and we'll keep the leader of our country, Prime Minister Trudeau.....
All we ask is that you take Bieber and Shatner...we'll throw in a case of cold brewsky….we know how y'all love our beer!
))))
FREE TO A GOOD AMERICAN HOME, haven't you always wanted one?
