Vamp - You should def do some cross border price checking, it's probably worth the exchange. Canadian prices for this stuff is so high. Cross border there is more choice and much better pricing. For almond flour (2nd mortgage maker), I buy the Sunblest brand from Costco (also best price on coconut flour). I find it's the best quality. 1.36 kg bag for $29 as compared to grocery stores at 3 times the price per kg! Avoid Bob's Red Mill almond flour if you can...it's closer to almond meal and falls flat in baking....also VERY pricy. Cassava flour, well that's just insane. I buy Otto's from a tiny store in Pickering, which is about the same as ordering online from the states. Ready for this? $65 taxes out for a 5 lb bag.*GAK* Cassava, thankfully is rarely dragged out in my kitchen, starchy, carby and expensive. It's reserved for the occasional loaf or pizza crust. One bag is going on a year old and still have 1/4 left. Swerve....I have one bag in the cupboard, for the past 9 months, still sealed. I'm not a fan of artificial and don't know if it'll get cracked open, so not sure of prices. Eggs, ugggg, I buy a few dozen a week and load up at sale time. Generally runs 4.99 a doz (another *GAK*) I wish there were cheaper, but I eat so many I want to be sure I'm getting the 'good stuff'. MCT, sorry, no idea, don't use it....amazon? I think the trick for me is that the most expensive stuff is used sparingly around here, so cost doesn't become a big factor. At the end of the day, yeah, 2nd mortgage. LOL@ your husband's observation.....the bread would fit the tray! Paleo/keto bread doesn't have the rise of wheat, and I swear, some recipes turn out doorstops, not bread LOL!! YAY no more 'hangar'...you're doing great! Take it easy on that vid doing what you can....don't want you winded!

You won't scare anyone at the gym!!! I've found no one really cared when I lost my hair, (except my mom). I rarely wore a wig.. (only for formal occasions, like my kids graduations) I would go to dinner with my hubby and take off my hat because I was hot.. I wore a bandanna on my head at the gym for sweat, but took it off as soon as possible.
When I first got my wig, I wore it to work. I got hot and took it off and left it on my desk. Forgot about it and went to the printer and to get coffee.. My co-workers, while saying a great wig, saw me without it and said, "You have a great head! You don't need it". Very supportive.. At the end of the day, I left the office, got halfway home and called my husband.. "Oh, shit, I left my hair in the office!!" It was pretty funny. After that I didn't bother. I wore a knit hat and I could put on and take off as I needed for hot and cold...
It doesn't last forever.. Hair starts regrowing right away.. You got this!

MAP--no wigs for me. I either posted here or on another thread that I'm fine with ball caps *except* possibly two Board meetings at work when everybody kinda dresses up. I have scarves to play with but I wonder if that draws even more attention to your head? I might just stick with ball caps and not worry about it.
Egads--I feel like bananas would be even hotter? Maybe some cool cucumber slices? Or there's that thing during rads you read about with the cabbage leaves on your head.

Our lovely and learned Cave Chick Solfeo recently posted a run down on the dangers of dairy, and wisely so. Us survivors (especially hormone positive kids) aren't the run of the mill Joe Paleo. We have definite concerns.
Now, hardcore paleo peeps do not touch dairy of any sort. Paleo/primals like myself indulge in somewhat strict moderation. All the material I've read over the last few years has indicated that full fat is the way to go….for many good reasons…..and grass fed organic being the king of choices. Sol's post got me questioning/thinking about the hormone end, so I've done some further digging on the subject. I'd assumed grass fed to be perfect, especially here in Canada. Hormone & antibiotic use on bovines is illegal in dairy production. Here's my 2 cents.
High vs Low Fat:
After some of the larger studies, skim was recommended for breast cancer as compared to high fat, but the results seem to be muddled, and the scientific community was conflicted from one study to another, and most noted that much more extensive research needs to be done with regard to high vs low fat. The 'bad guy' component in dairy (hows that for scientific terminology?), betacellulin, only seems to become dangerous (cancer fuelling) when separated from the saturated fat and CLA. Both these provide cancer protective mechanisms, which in turn points to full fat as king. Low fat dairy is higher in sugar as compared to high. Yet high fat yields in your diet can lead to weight gain & more bodily sugar production (more Egads science terminology) if you over indulge. It leaves you not knowing which way to turn. There is concrete evidence that sugar can lead to or fuel cancer cells, so that puts skim at slightly higher disadvantage. To add more conflict, some of the dairy/cancer studies included some sketchy test methods. There wasn't a control diet group in some, eastern vs western mice studies fed the high fat group a steady diet of heavily sugared liquid food as compared to a 'normal' rodent diet in the low fat group. Some of the Human studies do indicate that the complete diet of the subjects wasn't followed giving all dairy, low or high, not much of fighting chance to present clean numbers. This is most likely why almost every report I read noted a need for much more extensive research to determine a concrete link between the fat levels and cancer (of all types). Certain cancers appear to fuel on low vs fat, and vice versa. At the end of the day there is no direct link established yet to point a finger at either, and until there is, moderation with grass fed dairy and a clean diet is key IMHO.
Hormone Conundrum:
Hormones through dairy is a valid concern. It seems it's all dependent on various factors. How long is the cow milked (pregnant)? What's it fed? A steady diet of GMO corn laced with hormones and antibiotics? How is the product processed? Western cows (even organic) are pregnant most of their lives, hence higher hormone levels and in the US hormone/antibiotics are widely used ….ewwww for hormone + peeps! I don't need a scientific study to tell me that this chemical bomb will pass through into the milk, and right down my gullet. Kinda' like a shot of HRT with every gulp. Organic, a better choice, does not have added hormones but still has lurking natural hormone levels a pregnant cow holds. Grass fed/organic, while is the best choice, might not be perfect in hormone positive breast cancer women as it depends on the length of time a cow is kept pregnant. Most of the large studies however, are run on regular old processed dairy, low vs high fat content, not exactly perfect, nor fair to grass fed, and we still need better numbers for grass fed and ALL dairy. There are responsible grass fed dairy farmers, that keep things on an even keel (all organic grass fed/lower pregnancy lengths), and indicators are that the naturally occurring pregnancy hormone doesn't have that much of an impact on our bodies when not mixed with a chemical cocktail. Problem is finding a trusted source. The other problem is the risk.
My take: If your cancer is/was strongly hormonal positive you might want to rethink your dairy choices/intake. My ER+ was low, bordering triple neg, so will I stop using full fat dairy? No. BUT, my already low intake (because of GI issues, and well, I'm paleo) will be scrutinized again….at least until proper study is done and proves something concrete either way….who wants to chance it?? If you're going to continue, you have choices to make, and probably some scaling back to do. I still lean towards high fat grass fed in great moderation. If you're high on the hormonal scale and eating regular dairy, I'd say drop it……like today. Organic, I'd still drop it. Grass fed, while the best choice, would be on my table as a blue moon treat if my ER+ was high. The choice is dependent on each individual. More food for thought: dairy is essentially a baby food, no matter what species feed off it in infancy. Adults don't really need to depend on it as a diet staple. Calcium & Vit D....well there are plenty of other ways to get that...supplements, dark green leafy veg etc. Might be time us big kids left dairy for the kids table.
My hat is off to Solfeo for bringing awareness to this subject. Sol has confirmed how important it is for us to look at our food choices carefully, and do our homework….specifically researching choices vs cancer. So after assuming grass fed was perfect, I now have to eat my hat for breakfast…..and sorry, it's going down with a pat of grass fed butter….my limit for the month LOL!

The dairy question is complex. Aside from the fact that I really like my morning yogurt and dry curd in my salad, there's no real reason for me to eat it. My guess is that the hormone content of dairy is just part of the equation.
Also, I'm confused about the notion that low-fat means high sugar content. Here is a comparison on some Greek yogurt.
"US Food and Drug administration guidelines state that no physiologic effects occur when consumption is ≤1% of the endogenous quantities produced by the segment of the population with the lowest daily production. This threshold value for intake would be 540 ng/day. Estimated total E(1) intake from three servings of whole milk was 68 ng/day, which represents 0.01% to 0.1% of daily production rates in human beings. These findings support levels below the current guidelines for safe consumption."

Pixi - hiya! nice post! as to the the higher sugar, I'm referring to dairy products. Low fat products such as yogurt generally include added sugars, not good. Full fat milk and cream log in at almost equal lactose levels. Lactose is a dissacharide, translation- sugar. Where the difference lies is in saturated fat preventing the milk sugars from hitting the blood stream as hard, hence why full fat doesn't spike insulin levels the way that low fat does. (CLA and saturated fat mechanism). Your pancreas isn't taking aa big a hit on full fat. As for the studies listed, yes, I read those too...both include conclusion statements stating there is no confirmed link, and that more and clearer studies are needed. The studies are conflicting because of incomplete variables. This is why dairy is such a grey area/in limbo within the paleo population. I still wouldn't risk if I was highly ER+. As for your morning yogurt and curds, and if you're not bothered by GI issues or hormone levels, I wouldn't worry, it has a pretty decent nutritional profile....is it organic? If not and it's available in organic, it might be a consideration for you. Assuming the rest of your diet is clean, and you're active it's all good.

Sadly, my yogurt and dry cottage cheese are not organic. I do occasionally get some organic yogurt. I eat yogurt with flax and hemp seeds so there are some good fats in there. I'm careful to avoid added sugars, although I do eat carbs. Last time I tried to go lower carb, within less than two weeks I started losing weight so quickly, I actually had to stop! That doesn't necessarily mean they're good for me, they just keep me from looking emaciated. I am pretty active.

Pixi - Great to see you avoiding added sugar, of all the doozies there are for cancer and a myriad of other bad health issues, sugar seems to be the Queen of Mean! oh yeah, low carb will lose ya' some weight for sure. It fell off me in the beginning, so much so it scared the heck out of me....it slowed thankfully. Also great to see you're active - cheers!
Ingerp - The hubs and I go through close to 2 dozen a week. It's close to a perfect protein. Perfect for snacks or anything really. Thankfully they finally came out a few years ago and backpeddled on the cholesterol issue. You can't raise it by eating cholesterol laden foods, it's a matter of genetics and how much you eat, and what you're eating alongside it....especially if its the bad stuff. So eggs it is, 3 if you want lol Bon Appetit!!

So I couldn't find any info on how positive I was for ER and PR, I have all my records too. Currently I am not sure I am going to worry about giving cheese up completely. It's taking everything for me to get to the LCHF without giving everything I love up at once, that will just send me into a deep depression and right back to loading up with sugar and carbs.
I am also disappointed that yesterday I was down 2.8lbs and today I am back up that 2.8lbs! NOT HAPPY! Especially since my calorie intake is soooo much better than before starting this LCHF way of life. I weigh and count everything!
I did my video and made it till the end...barley. I also went for a big walk with DS1.
Why can't we have yummy plain chocolate? I haven't been eating it, just curious the reason for it.

Vamp - the weight...did you eat salty yesterday? Salt will retain water faster than a duck on a June bug. Drink plenty of water today. If your sodium was lower today, step back on the scale in the morning,that 2.8 might be gone again. Restaurant food has me up at least 2 lbs the next day. The day after, I'm back down.
Regular chocolate is full of sugar and dairy (more sugar). Melt down some 80%, add your sweetener of choice (easy does it, measure to carb count) pour into molds, or just drizzle into patterns on parchment, stick in the fridge until hard and you got yourself a nicer paleo chocolate. You can add nuts and whatever to make chocolate 'bark'.

FOODIE FRIDAY! WOOT!
Gotta love Friday! End of the work week, kick back- chillaxin' couple of days ahead. There isn't a better day to parade our Paleo culinary expertise down paleo Main Street, or, as in my case, not so expertise. I have a love/hate relationship with the kitchen……love the eating, like the cooking, hate the prep! Ok, so I'll start it off this week with my humble entry.
I have to WARN you, some may scream, a few might click off, never to return again, some may say"'oh cool!". Whatever, I doubt anyone has cooked up a more Paleo food this week. It's the epitome of Paleo! Now that I've said that, I'm positive I'll be topped LOL
Brace yourself, I made AND ate…….Cricket Muffins. Yes, you read that correctly….CRICKET MUFFINS. Made with pure cricket powder. How much more Paleolithic can ya' get????
You may ask…..(is she insured for psychiatric?), what the heck did it taste like? I broke a bit of a sweat when I cautiously dipped my finger into the bag for a taste of the flour all on it's lonesome. It's amazing!! Earthy (obviously) with a strong nutty flavour….perfect for baking! The recipe was originally for paleo cricket carrot cake muffins, but I sub'd out the carrots for zuchinni to cut carbs and give it a more 'cricket legs sticking out' look. Figured it'd freak out my better half, 'cause I'm good that way
)) Nope, he jumped right in and declared it delicious. Damn! I was hoping to score the whole dozen! Cricket is pure protein, ultra low carb, and a great source of B12. Combined with the flavouring it was pretty damned good.

Frosted with paleo 'cream cheese' icing, a tiny sprinkle of coconut sugar (to look like dirt), and lime zest….to look like legs….Not the prettiest of baked goods, but no worries, can't see ugly once it's in the tummy. Next time I'm adding veg colouring to make it brilliant green!

Vamp - LOL, my family thinks so! How was the weight this morning? Down again? I don't know if you saw my comment to you about the up and down scale, but I was thinking it might have been water retention. You would have had to eat 3500 calories over and above your target to gain an actual pound of fat.
Ingerp - I was seriously cracked up when I posted that comment & pic, and saying 'oooooo burrrrnnnn' too LOL!!!! But good point though, I'm working my way up to the 'real deal'....hopefully spicy ones. My next move though, worm meal flour.....I expect to sprout wings sometime soon, or go underground

Egads, I think you should just dehydrate your own worms and crickets. Would be so much cheaper and 100% natural!
I did see it and funny thing is my salts been low up until yesterday, then it was on the high side. I was the same this am... stupid scale! 😜 I drink around 9-12 8oz glasses of water a day -minimum if I drink anymore I will be floating. Lol
My calorie count was the lowest it's been in a long time. I am definitely enjoying not feeling hungry/hangry!
I tried a small bite of 100% dark chocolate and if that wasn't bad enough I tried another bite, nope not any better the second time! Yuck!

Hi, everyone. I'm catching up from all week. You'll soon find out I'm mostly a weekender as far as posting. Happy to say I have achieved my lowest weight in 3 years. Technically I'm a normal BMI, but I gained about 8 pounds over the last 5 years, so I've been trying to knock that off, and hey I wouldn't mind if I could lose more and be my pre-baby-Sports-Illustrated-model self that I am in my mind – a girl can dream. But mostly my goal is to eat healthy. I've been doing a lot of medium walks this week – 25 to 30 minutes, eating clean and always do intermittent fasting. Today I went to lunch with my bestie at our beloved Mexican place. I had about 6 tortillas chips with salsa waiting for our food but then got shrimp fajitas and just ate the shrimp, veggies and mango slaw – avoided the tortillas. It was just as delicious without the tortillas, and I was proud to have done that well!
Egads, they try that old tax thing on you Canadians too? My last phone call said the IRS was going to have me arrested by the local police if I didn't call back in 24 hours. Now first of all, I happen to be a tax professional so I know the IRS doesn't do business over the phone. But any fool would know the IRS has no jurisdiction to send the local police to get you. I could just imagine someone writing the script – oh if we say the "local" police will arrest you, that will really only get the dumb, gullible ones who will pay up.

JKL I get a huge appetite after hard exercising – for like 18 hours later. That's when I get vulnerable to whatever is in front of me and I can't say I've found the exact solution to it.
Vampeyes, anything salty and I gain weight a couple of pounds. Also exercise causes me to gain a couple of pounds and I read it has something to do with post-exercise repair holding more water? something like that.
Oh hell, no Egads, on the cricket anything. But if you want to try some dry roasted ants – I think I can help you out. I have approximately 300,000 living in a crack in my driveway and its 95 degrees today.
I'm torn on the dairy thing. Originally I was avoiding it, and then it crept back in a bit as I saw Mark Sisson get a little more friendly about it. I eat Kerrygold butter – grass fed. I eat organic cheese sometimes, and I do a little organic, full-fat plain yogurt. I would contend that any of these diet studies did not study our diet – because they never study eliminating grains. Its probably good to avoid cheese on everything for sure, but as mentioned, CLA in cheese seems to have good properties, for the heart at least. I hope they are wrong about the low-fat vs full-fat study…
Costco is where I buy stuff. Thrive has a good mail order, although I ended up giving up my Thrive membership. I buy a lot of stuff at Costco – Kerrygold butter, organic eggs, organic ground beef, wild caught salmon, organic chicken, large bags of pecans and almonds, Kind bars (5 grams sugar, fulfills my "dessert" needs. Not sure if they have the almond flour and swerve because I don't buy those. If nothing else you could food process a huge bag of almonds. They don't have a nitrate free and sugar-free bacon, so I buy that and yogurt at Trader Joe's or a regular store.

Just chiming in to say hubs just heard/read something about Costco having the best salmon. He plans to stock up tomorrow. (And I love TJs for nuts and dried fruit. Also all those wacky healthy seeds (chia, flax, . . .). I've been making my own granola for several months, although sometimes it's a little *too* yummy. ;-) )

Oh, Ingerp, we would get along. I love to mix a bunch of different nuts with a mix of dried fruit. That's my favorite thing. I love their dried mango and those dang banana chips.
I also read some chef saying he buys his prime rib(?) or maybe just prime beef at Costco.

Oh, and TwoH, I've been taking Egads' advice to combine protein & carbs post-workout (almond butter on an apple or an apple & hard-boiled egg) & it's working well. Today is Day 7 of my first week - I'll see you all in the confessional tomorrow!
