Welcome KSUSAN,
My favorite bird back in Illinois was the Great Blue Heron. A group of them lived in a creek back behind our house and I could see the taking off and landing. I really liked how graceful they were folding and unfolding their wings. It was the most exotic bird I had seen locally.
A group of birds I enjoyed was the red winged blackbirds that spent a lot of time in a wild area behind our house. Once I saw them chase a hawk away, it was impressive.
As far as a mass demonstration the Canada Geese that flew over spring and fall uwas amazing. We were on the flyway to the Horicon Marsh up in WI and the number of Geese was far beyond even estimating.
I hope your surgery goes smoothly and you will be back with us soon.

Hmmm, a rare bird for me to see was a whooping crane, but some of the most beautiful birds I ever saw were violet green swallows swooping just below the rim of the Grand Canyon. I love swallows anyway, but these were just beautiful. Other than swallows though, I'm partial to wading birds.

I loved seeing the storks in Avila Spain. We lived in Madrid for 4 years 40 years ago. I wish I had been more interested in birds at the time. They would make their nests along the walls of the old city. When I am at my computer again, I will put the photos up.

Meanwhile back home in our yard
-
Lisa, I bet you loved your time in Spain. Awesome pictures.
Here are some pictures I took for this photography workshop I am doing. The old windmill in the is supposedly a still working windmill from Holland that dates back to the 1750's. This is in Geneva, IL where it resides. I drove out of town to find it and got in a car accident on my way there. Nothing serious but it turned into quite a day. There were dozens of ducks in the parking lot but by the time I got off the phone dealing with insurance people they went into the water. This is the Fox River in northern Illinois.

a wood stork showed up in my back yard yesterday. -
You have such neat and interesting birds in Florida. How cool to have one in your backyard. -
this is only the 2nd time I've seen a wood stork. The last time, it was a pair of them up in the trees,, and that was a few years ago. I live on a pond, and I see a lot of water birds,,, herons, egrets, ibis. I felt very lucky to sneak up on this stork and get a decent pic. -
not a bird but just saw this today
-
Our garden show had a seed saver organization that had milkweed seeds to plant for the monarch butterflies.
-
I saw that photo of the windmill and it looked so much like one I took in Holland
-
-
Love that stork! My mother gets great blue herons eating her goldfish in the pond sometimes.
-
Lisa, your windmill look much newer than this one. I am not sure how long this has been here but it is very, very old. I love the green grass. I am getting a little tired of the white stuff and the cold. I am so ready for green and flowers! We are experiencing the coldest February on record.
Love your butterfly too.
-
I think that one in Holland is older. But who knows.

This is not exactly bird watching...http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-31604026

Wren, that story is amazing. I have heard that crows are very intelligent. I guess this proves that. Thanks for sharing that.
