I hope eveyrone had a peaceful Christmas!
I love those photos Lisa!
Jazzy, that is great news. There must be some amazing birds down there The Audubon society here does a lot to protect local habitats and I like to walk the trails from time to time..
I have a mystery bird here. I took a pic in the local Zoo today but forgot to check out what it was. It was in the aviary that is set up as a tropical rainforest.
Does anybody know that it is? I found one pic on-line but no description!
This is a Victoria Crowned Pigeon. It is so dark in the birdhouse that its difficult to get good pics but I have been wanting to get one of these since I last went, quite a while ago now.
-
we have that top bird here.will check the name when I get to my computer.
-
I think it is a nicobar pidgeon
-
the
these were all in the same aviary
-
Thank you Lisa! I need to take a notebook when I go to the zoo!! Those are some beautiful bird shots. Are they different types of pigeons as they have similar body shapes?
-
I take a picture of the chart they have with the pictures and names on them.
-
The problem is that I go so often to the zoo, I can't find them. I have a yearly pass so I go to just a few things each time. It is right across the road from the Navy Hospital where I go for my too many appointments.
-
-
The nearest zoo to me is very small but its a nice little zoo. They just have the names across the bottom of the display but there is no proper list or anything. My memory is so bad too. Even when I check I forget by the time I get home! The Victoria Crowned was very laid back. There are a few of them but the one just flew out of the display area and walked around among the visitors then eventually flew back over the wall to join his friends.
-
I love that victoria crowned pidgeon. I don't think I have seen one of those..
-
Hi ladies,Loving all the gorgeous birds. Who knew pigeons could be so beautiful! I am hoping for some bird photo ops at my mom's. Haven't had any time for that so far. Now that I have joined the Arboretum I need to join the Brookfield Zoo and see all the neat animals that you ladies are posting.

I just bought a new pole for my bird feeder
Where is the best place to put it?
-
If possible, near bushes. ;o)
-
I usually have my seed feeder and thistle feeder on poles about 20 feet apart...this winter Im trying to have them on the same pole/2 hooks- just cause Im tired of shoveling the grass to get to the far one! Will see if the finches will come by the seed feeder or not. If not- will shovel the grass!
and--its National Bird Day!
-
I have a bird feeder outside my kitchen window for the finches and other small birds. The finches are very aggressive and compete for the feeding stations and will fly around and knock one another off. There are larger birds that try to get on to the feeder and are too big, mostly the mourning doves and thrushes, but get themselves on part of the feeder and tip it to knock seed down on the ground. It is crazy to watch sometimes. Bird feeding frenzy. It is cold here now and they are hungry.
I decided this winter to just sprinkle some seed on the rocks out back for the larger birds which seems to be working. I see more of the large birds there eating now, leaving the smaller birds to have their feeder.
-
on the way home today, I couldn't believe that there was a bald eagle on the lamppost on the freeway. Big as could be looking down at me. I wish it were in an easy place to stop but No.Darn it.😔
-
In the backyard this morning as I went out to fill up the bird feeder. Pretty sure it is a Swaison's hawk.
-
I hope the birds that use the feeder saw it too.
-
Wren- I can always tell when a hawk is around. I usually will see the finches and other small birds at the feeder or up in the ash tree out front if the feeder is empty waiting for me to fill it. There were no birds around this morning when I went out there. Then I saw why. Their absence first thing in the morning usually signals a bird of prey around.
-
Has anyone bought the advanced pole system and holiday bird food molds at wild bird unlimited? Omg the birds chickadees , juncos, finches devoured my snowman bird seed. As many as 10 birds at a time pecking at it. Wow I am getting another one.
-
anyone know what this is? just saw him
-
-
Lisa, I think it may be a cedar waxwing. Great catch. I have never seen one except in photos.
-
Lisa,
The yellow is much brighter than the ones that visit me at least once a year when they are migrating. I will have to post some bad pics of them. I have never been able to get a good pic but now that I have my "bird camera" I hope to get some good pics when they come through. I will have to hunt for them though. They are very sleek and beautiful. They come by the dozens to my yard and stay a few days and eat all of the ornamental fruit on my crabs and my plum tree.
-
lyz.I think you are right.
-
-
This is where he lives...I also heard today that the bald eagles are arriving here for their migration...
I guess that is why I saw one last week..
