I say yes, you say no, OR People are Strange

The more glamorous Michelle Obama becomes, the more entertaining are the conservatives who froth at the mouth and spin themselves into a fury worthy of the Tasmanian Devil. Their latest reason for angst: the First Lady is appearing on the cover ofVoguemagazine, for the second time, with the publication of the April issue.

One would think that the critics of this lovely woman would still be recovering from the heart palpitations they gave themselves over herappearance during the Academy Awards. But, no. No occasion upon which they can sling impotent arrows escapes their notice. And I say impotent because, in spite of the massive energy poured into their effort, Michelle continues to have anapproval ratingof over 70%. Now that’s a rating any conservative would die for!

As soon as theWashington Postpublished an article about theVoguecover on Thursday, the comments started rolling in. Many were positive and supportive, but apparently, may were far from it. By 9:20 a.m., aWP stafferhad to enter the online commentary thread to say:

“Hi all, I work on the team that handles online comments. I just wanted to remind everyone that our comments section is here so that readers can conduct a constructive dialogue around our journalism. Hate speech and personal attacks will be removed from this thread. If anyone has questions or concerns, feel free to email comments@washpost.com. That goes directly to me and a few others who oversee online comments. — Bethonie”

So the worst comments are no longer for public consumption, which is no doubt a good thing. The ones that are visible range from snarky to hateful.One reader complained:

“Our own version of Eva Peron takes another step forward with Juan Barack to play the populist game whilst living high on the hog (on the people’s dime) with the Hollywood and New York glitterati.”

And another said:

“Her role as a Presidents wife should be doing good for the country [sic]. She must want to be a model.”

I have news for you, nameless complainer: Michelle Obama IS a model. A role model–for all young women, but especially young women of color who have had to wait so long to see the media place a proper and welcome focus on an intelligent, beautiful, accomplished black female.

The constant uproar over Michelle’s public exposure only serves to strengthen her support and showcase one of her greatest attributes: the lady has CLASS. In response to the uproar over her Oscar appearance,the First Lady said:

“That’s just the nature of life… It’s a part of the culture. It’s not really about me, I just happen to be in the public eye and along with everybody else in the public eye, you’re subject to conversation, opinion and all that sort of stuff. There’s nothing new about that.”

*Sigh*.I loveMichelle Obama–and I’m not alone!

Anna Wintour, the Vogue editor, is very choosy about who she allows on the cover of Vogue. She is one of the world's most powerful --and feared-- fashion decision-makers and, for better and for worse, she is not shy about saying who she believes is too "common" for Vogue. She has allegedly shunned both Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez on that count and she won't let someone on the cover just because that person is the wife of a head of state (POTUS). She once walked out halfway through a Chanel show because she didn't like the clothes. Yes, she is an Obama donor, but she isn't the type would would sell her magazine covers or do anybody any favors.

Therefore, there is NO WAY IN HELL that Anna Wintour would allow any of the trash who criticize Michelle near Vogue. These people probably wouldn't even meet her standards as magazine subscription sellers. A lot of them may know it and simply be jealous.

Hi all.  Funeral was yesterday, attended by loving family, friends, and the active duty general in charge of the army nurse course, a retired general in charge of the women's war memorial in Washington, several colonels, and captains. My DH sang Avia Maria for her during visitation and played Amazing Grace and Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring in a violin duet with her finance at the mass. At the National Cemetery in Washington Crossing, Millie received a 21 gun salute and they played taps.  We miss her, but she would have loved the send off.

Pip, do you watch HGTV? They make it look so simple!

Linda - our friendship is OVER!  JK! - I find tigers scary, believe it or not. They are beautiful, but extremely dangerous and aggressive (not that lions aren't but tigers are much worse). IMO, lions, as social animals, are more intellgent and complex. Still, there's no accounting for taste.

Pip - just say no.  They are trying to get the best bang for their buck.  Also, breathe deep and try to relax.  I feel funny saying that as I feel like I'm running on a tight-rope over the Grand Canyon in a raging gale, but do what I say, not what I'm doing!!

We too are supposed to close on Monday.  I think the people know, though, that they got the very best deal that they were going to get for it.  If they had asked for a single thing more, then we'd be moving back in.  I'm fairly depressed about the whole thing at the moment and miss my big house so very much.  But I sincerely hope that the move will be felt to be good in the long run.  If it isn't, then it won't be the first bad mistake I've made in my life - and it probably won't be the last either.  The next step is to figure out where we want to live.  That's going to be difficult!!!

How to tame a tiger ... *oops ... a leopard

Hope the house sales get done for you pip and gumby!  Our last sale had a lot of last minute crappola too ... maybe they all do.  They kept asking for one piddling thing after another and we were already paying their closing costs.  The final straw was when they asked us to redo a patio cover that the previous owner had built.  I told them no ... but that we would tear it down if they really had a problem with it.  Not another peep out of them after that. 

Athena ... have you ever considered looking for a job in a better climate and moving away from DC?  Probably lots of reasons to keep you there though. 

ETA ... is that a tiger or something else?  Just dawned on me that tigers have stripes not spots.  I think?  Having a brain fart ... must go look it up .  

Athena, I was going to say leopard and realized that I might as well not as I've been miss-spelling all day and my spell checker is visiting Fla. or maybe even the Bahamas.

LOL! My proofreader has gone to another planet, I think.

What I most like physically about lions, for the record, (apart from everything else) is how expressive they are, and also their very chiseled structure. Tigers have round faces and so do leopards. Cheetahs are also gorgeous, but they don't emote the way lions do. Notice the picture of a lioness and her cubs that I posted a few pages back - look at that proud and tender mother's face!
