I can't get Fox or MSNBC because I won't pay for those stations on my cable service (I'd rather pay for the Scyfy channel).  I rely on my local news and they tell it like it is!

All of the news entertainment shows annoy me so I don't watch anymore.  I listen to NPR and local news on my way in to work, and that's it.

So happy for your good news, Glenna!

Suzie - ouch.  Hope your back settles down.

So, my daughter calls me yesterday to say she's sick (feverish, queasy, just wants to sleep) and then calls me again later (twice!) in tears about how much work she has to do, all the due dates she's facing, how's she ever going to get it done, why did she get sick now, etc. etc.  I know she'll get through this, but it's so hard to hear your normally buoyant and upbeat and confident child so miserable.  It's her first real meltdown since she started college -- maybe she was overdue (second semester, sophomore year), but still . . . makes me wish she wasn't so far away.

Thanks girls - no you can't have him E - pain way reduced already.  I actually took a pain killer today before I went to see him and that wore off hours ago, but now I don't need any. He puts me on traction machine which really helps too.

We've been watching the latest Mad Men series on DVD - love that show. I checked Amazon UK for Newsroom, but it won't be released until later in the year - I'm really looking forward to that!!!

Night girls - early to bed for me after last night.

    Glenna,

Great news.  Congratulations.  Best wishes for continued improvement and mild side effects.

Regarding smoking, my brother had oral surgery three years ago for cancer in part from smoking.  He also had radiation.  Well the second worse thing happened.  The bone at his radiation site died.  He has just undergone a mandibular free flap where they doctors take his fibula from his leg and use it to replace his jaw bone.  The surgery lasted 22 hours.  The recovery could take up to a year. If you can't get people to quit smoking, they should at least see a dentist who once a year does oral exams for cancer.  If the dentist does not pull on their lips and tongue, then they should change to a dentist who does perform oral cancer screenings.

Congrats Glenna.  Suzie, back pain is my constant companion.  I know too well how miserable it is.  Glad you're feeling better!

CPAC: March Madness on the Potomac

"The annual conservative gathering is always bad, says Michael Tomasky, but this year’s choices of main speakers seem designed to alienate as many Americans as possible"

"......As for the event itself, well, the has-been is Sarah Palin, and the obnoxious man is Donald Trump. What else do you need to know? My Beast colleague Michael Moynihan did a terrific job yesterday of describing the event’s consuming kookiness, but let’s take a moment to stop and ponder these two marquee invitations, as well as that of Ted Cruz, the new It boy. Palin leads the pack with a 16-minute slot. Trump is given 14 minutes, and Cruz will provide the conference with its crucial concluding remarks.

What do these three have in common? They aren’t the movement’s rising stars. They aren’t its most articulate policy thinkers. They’re the most adept red-meat throwers. Palin and Trump are experienced demagogues and liars. Cruz is new to the game, but what with his recent prove-you-stopped-beating-your-wife attacks on Chuck Hagel and on the allegedly communist-infiltrated Harvard Law School, he’s risen up the ranks quickly....."

Clear Channel banned all Dixie Chicks airplay, nationwide, after Natalie Maines said she was embarrassed by President Bush, who had just started the Iraq War.

Clear Channel pays millions to Limbaugh who calls President Obama a "Thug," "Magic Negro," & "JackAss"... after Obama ended the Iraq War.

Congratulations, Glenna! Sending more zapping and shrinking thoughts up I-95 toward Balmer!

Lewing, so sorry to hear about Katie's anxiety! Yep, I think her meltdown is probably overdue. Everyone I know (including me!) had their meltdown sometime freshman year. She will get through it because she is strong and you have given her excellent coping skills, and you are right there at her back. Things always look much worse when you don't feel well.

Suzie, sorry to hear about your back. Hope it gets better in a hurry and you don't relapse.

Dixie Chicks ... Oh yes, I remember. I will never forget. They exercised their First Amendment rights and were pilloried, threatened and ostracized for calling it like they saw it. And the right wing applauded and piled on, calling them traitors and worse. And those same RWNJs say filthy, vile things about the First Family (the Dixie Chicks never said a word about the Bush girls, let alone used racial or ethnic slurs to talk about them) and threaten their lives and then whine about having their free speech rights suppressed when the Secret Service knocks on their doors after the threats. I do not listen to Clear Channel radio stations (so I don't hear their sponsors' ads -- are you listening, sponsors?). When I travel, I look up Clear Channel radio stations and make sure I don't tune in.

Ah yes, C-PAC is here. Ugh. Better go get my rabies vaccination, an N95 mask and bleach. That will take care of most of the hazardous waste emanating from that gathering.

Health insurance company CEO pay - WTH do those people DO to be worth that much money? Let policyholders die?

WooHoo, Glenna! Doing the happy dance for you! Laughing

I'm so glad I never smoked! I have somewhat of an addictive personality and doubt I'd ever have been able to stop. Of course a cancer scare can do wonders thwarting one's appetites.

Sunday Talk Interviews Show Why Jeb Bush Will Never Be President

"On five talk shows Sunday morning, Jeb Bush reminded America why he’ll never be president: it’s hard to distance yourself from your own last name....

“I don’t think there’s any Bush baggage at all,” the former Florida governor said on Fox News Sunday. “I love my brother. I’m proud of his accomplishments.” On Meet the Press, he added that “history will be kind to George W. Bush.”

"....Unfortunately for Jeb, history is written by historians. Three times since 2009, pollsters have asked them to rank American presidents, and in those rankings, W. has come in 36th, 39th, and 31st. Only Millard Fillmore, Warren Harding, William Henry Harrison, Franklin Pierce, Andrew Johnson, and James Buchanan rank lower. Ordinary Americans agree. Three times since George W. Bush left office, pollsters have asked the public to rank recent presidents. And three times, W. has ended up second to last, ahead of only Richard Nixon.....

....It’s no exaggeration to say George W. Bush is more responsible than any other single individual for the Republican Party’s current dismal standing.....

That’s why Jeb Bush will never seriously challenge for the presidency—because to seriously challenge for the presidency, a Republican will have to pointedly distance himself from Jeb’s older brother. No Republican will enjoy credibility as a deficit hawk unless he or she acknowledges that George W. Bush squandered the budget surplus he inherited. No Republican will be able to promise foreign-policy competence unless he or she acknowledges the Bush administration’s disastrous mismanagement in Afghanistan and Iraq. It won’t be enough for a candidate merely to keep his or her distance from W.  John McCain and Mitt Romney tried that, and they failed because the Obama campaign hung Bush around their neck every chance it got. To seriously compete, the next Republican candidate for president will have to preempt that Democratic line of attack by repudiating key aspects of Bush’s legacy. Jeb Bush would find that excruciatingly hard even if he wanted to. And as his interviews Sunday make clear, he doesn’t event want to try."

Jeb Bush is scary. He's smarter than Dimson, has tons of money and is strongly connected with the Hispanic community. I think he will be their nominee in 2016. Hopefully the article is correct and his last name will be like an anchor around his neck, sinking any chance he has to take the WH.

I too think that is fantastic news Glenna and hope your news stays that way for a long time to come.

As to smoking, it has been nearly 15 yrs. for me.  One of the best presents I ever gave myself.  Saying it though, I do know that it is a VERY tough addiction.  The other thing I learned ( about the same time I stopped ) was that even if nothing else were to come up as a se from smoking....the smoke constantly hitting your face --- and often you are enjoying your habit with like-minded others, and going through your system....starting in your mouth, will eventually clog up and shut down all the little capillaries in your face and neck.  Those are what helps get oxygen and other beneficial nutrients to your skin layers.  If you continue to smoke....eventually you end up with dead skin on your face and neck.  It is why long-time smokers just don't look good....even if they aren't ill with something.  Now the other thought I have had and read in a quote as well --- the price now.  It is a huge price to pay to slowly annihilate yourself.  Last time I checked here....cigarettes were over $5.00 a pack ( what I paid for a carton when I first smoked ) and they are set to go up rather quickly a $1.00 more.

As far as news....I watch MSNBC and totally enjoy it.  Mainly as I see them as the counter to the farce news that happens over at Fox.  I would have to say that since my "family" -- most of them total Republicans tried their best to shove Fox news down my throat -- and that was long before, when I only watched local news, I chose to go to the channel that presents the opposite of the narrow minded lies and scare tactics stories.  I mean...I look at my family and think yeah, right....look what Fox has done for you.  I use to enjoy their company.....now all they do is whine and complain and pick everything apart -- see most of life as either a threat or at least a personal affront and last but not least hurl epithets and other sundry snide remarks about the President and most Democrats.  Yes, I look at what it had done for them and I'm running the other way as fast as I can.

So ok....today is a good day that I will enjoy and probably play my Dixie Chicks tape on the way to work now I have been reminded.  Hope you all have a grand day.
