Michelle Obama Sets Conservative Heads Spinning–Again

    2013/03/15

    By Deborah Montesano

michelle-obama-vogueThe more glamorous Michelle Obama becomes, the more entertaining are the conservatives who froth at the mouth and spin themselves into a fury worthy of the Tasmanian Devil. Their latest reason for angst: the First Lady is appearing on the cover of Vogue magazine, for the second time, with the publication of the April issue.

One would think that the critics of this lovely woman would still be recovering from the heart palpitations they gave themselves over her appearance during the Academy Awards. But, no. No occasion upon which they can sling impotent arrows escapes their notice. And I say impotent because, in spite of the massive energy poured into their effort, Michelle continues to have anapproval rating of over 70%. Now that’s a rating any conservative would die for!

As soon as the Washington Post published an article about the Vogue cover on Thursday, the comments started rolling in. Many were positive and supportive, but apparently, may were far from it. By 9:20 a.m., a WP staffer had to enter the online commentary thread to say:

“Hi all, I work on the team that handles online comments. I just wanted to remind everyone that our comments section is here so that readers can conduct a constructive dialogue around our journalism. Hate speech and personal attacks will be removed from this thread. If anyone has questions or concerns, feel free to email comments@washpost.com. That goes directly to me and a few others who oversee online comments. — Bethonie”

So the worst comments are no longer for public consumption, which is no doubt a good thing. The ones that are visible range from snarky to hateful. One reader complained:

“Our own version of Eva Peron takes another step forward with Juan Barack to play the populist game whilst living high on the hog (on the people’s dime) with the Hollywood and New York glitterati.”

    And another said:

“Her role as a Presidents wife should be doing good for the country [sic]. She must want to be a model.”

I have news for you, nameless complainer: Michelle Obama IS a model. A role model–for all young women, but especially young women of color who have had to wait so long to see the media place a proper and welcome focus on an intelligent, beautiful, accomplished black female.

The constant uproar over Michelle’s public exposure only serves to strengthen her support and showcase one of her greatest attributes: the lady has CLASS. In response to the uproar over her Oscar appearance, the First Lady said:

“That’s just the nature of life… It’s a part of the culture. It’s not really about me, I just happen to be in the public eye and along with everybody else in the public eye, you’re subject to conversation, opinion and all that sort of stuff. There’s nothing new about that.”

*Sigh*. I love Michelle Obama–and I’m not alone!

This is from Add-Info.  I had to take the first out because it ended up with wayyyy too much stuff.  This really does say it all though.

HL - wow...your allowable limits must be a lot lower in your area than mine.  You had a lot of stuff while not getting to 5k!  I have to tell you, those several months I was over $5k, I imagined this must be what it's like to be on a Single Payer plan.  It was easy breezy...no bills, no worries.

What Sleep Number did you get?  I was choosing between the I8, M7 or P5 (all on sale).  I decided the P5 was comfortable enough and allowed me to get the flex fit adjustable base.  Hopefully I'll never have to deal with shoulder issues or something like BC, again, but how handy this feature would be or would have been!  Other than that, I think I'll enjoy reading in bed or just finding a more comfortable position when flat doesn't work.

Anna Wintour, the Vogue editor, is very choosy about who she allows on the cover of Vogue. She is one of the world's most powerful --and feared-- fashion decision-makers and, for better and for worse, she is not shy about saying who she believes is too "common" for Vogue. She has allegedly shunned both Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez on that count and she won't let someone on the cover just because that person is the wife of a head of state (POTUS). She once walked out halfway through a Chanel show because she didn't like the clothes. Yes, she is an Obama donor, but she isn't the type would would sell her magazine covers or do anybody any favors.

Therefore, there is NO WAY IN HELL that Anna Wintour would allow any of the trash who criticize Michelle near Vogue. These people probably wouldn't even meet her standards as magazine subscription sellers. A lot of them may know it and simply be jealous.

    Edited for clarification.

OMG - 2 Mad men episodes in one day - we'll run out soon. It has to be one of the best TV series ever. Did any of you watch Big Love when it was on - another of our favourites.

After mad shopping expedition this morning, I have had a relaxing day, doing nothing much else except for a wee chop at some overgrown bushes along the driveway. We had hamburgers for dinner - home cooked of course - yumm!!! Nice for a change.

Hi all.  Funeral was yesterday, attended by loving family, friends, and the active duty general in charge of the army nurse course, a retired general in charge of the women's war memorial in Washington, several colonels, and captains. My DH sang Avia Maria for her during visitation and played Amazing Grace and Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring in a violin duet with her finance at the mass. At the National Cemetery in Washington Crossing, Millie received a 21 gun salute and they played taps.  We miss her, but she would have loved the send off.

Another article, this one, the Washington Post.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/mildred-dalton-manning-army-nurse-and-wwii-prisoner-dies-at-98/2013/03/13/f55ad556-8c04-11e2-9f54-f3fdd70acad2_story.html

She's also in the Milestone section of the March 25 edition of Time magazine.

Am taking my DH to Vermont the middle of next week for wedding planning, then will return to my regularly scheduled life, with one channel missing.  Thanks everyone, for being here, for being supportive.

    Peace.

We have a conditional offer signed on a new house.  Whew.  Should go through with no issues.  On the other hand, the offer on our house was going well, due to close on Monday.  All of the sudden, last night they kept asking for more and more things to be changed or added.  I am really feeling the stress now.

Pip -- do try to relax a bit.  House buyers always try that sort of thing, usually after being persuaded by their lawyer or real estate agent that "It can't hurt to ask".  If there were something really that serious that they wanted added or changed, the sale negotiations would never have gotten this far!

Sandy -- Your dear MIL had the respectful and obviously loving sendoff she so clearly deserved.  You and your family will have your wonderful memories of her forever.

Jackie -- LOVE the tiger pic!  If I could have one slightly crazy wish, it would be to get up close and personal with a tiger, and not fear being looked at as prey!  With apologies to Athena, I think tigers are really the most gorgeous of the big catsSmile.

Susie -- Love Mad Men, but my new favourite is Homeland, which is finally available on Bravo here.  Fascinating series.  Haven't seen (or heard of) Big Love though.

Linda - our friendship is OVER! Laughing JK! - I find tigers scary, believe it or not. They are beautiful, but extremely dangerous and aggressive (not that lions aren't but tigers are much worse). IMO, lions, as social animals, are more intellgent and complex. Still, there's no accounting for taste. Cool

Pip....here's hoping they are just having a bit of a "case" of nerves.  Usually a good Realtor ( theirs ) can help them through that signing my life and livelihood  away time and nothing will actually slow down too much.  It has been some time since I had a "license to sell" but for the most part.....I feel that if you are within three or so days of closing most of the 'this' is what I want and need list should have been gotten through and firmly decided. Then again....anything is possible.  Just hoping it smooths out.

HGTV does make it look so easy but some one, if not both sides are going to stress to a maximum.  Even thes best realtors I think can't glide you over the intricasies very easily.

Going now...my spell-checker which sometimes works like a charm is out having a good time somewhere leaving me to know that I'm screwing up here.

Pip - just say no.  They are trying to get the best bang for their buck.  Also, breathe deep and try to relax.  I feel funny saying that as I feel like I'm running on a tight-rope over the Grand Canyon in a raging gale, but do what I say, not what I'm doing!!

We too are supposed to close on Monday.  I think the people know, though, that they got the very best deal that they were going to get for it.  If they had asked for a single thing more, then we'd be moving back in.  I'm fairly depressed about the whole thing at the moment and miss my big house so very much.  But I sincerely hope that the move will be felt to be good in the long run.  If it isn't, then it won't be the first bad mistake I've made in my life - and it probably won't be the last either.  The next step is to figure out where we want to live.  That's going to be difficult!!!

Linda - Big Love was about a Mormon family - the guy had 3 wives and connections to a compound run by a "prophet".

Up early for Steve going to golf, I might just go back to bed after he leaves.

Just came home from a shopping trip. The weather here is edging towards sixty degrees. That is OK as is, but it is clearly a portent of things to come. I am TERRIFIED of summers in DC. I bought two sleeveless dresses just to prepare. Now I need a summer' worth of sunscreen. If only I could just hibernate in my den!

How to tame a tiger ... *oops ... a leopard

Hope the house sales get done for you pip and gumby!  Our last sale had a lot of last minute crappola too ... maybe they all do.  They kept asking for one piddling thing after another and we were already paying their closing costs.  The final straw was when they asked us to redo a patio cover that the previous owner had built.  I told them no ... but that we would tear it down if they really had a problem with it.  Not another peep out of them after that.

Athena ... have you ever considered looking for a job in a better climate and moving away from DC?  Probably lots of reasons to keep you there though.

ETA ... is that a tiger or something else?  Just dawned on me that tigers have stripes not spots.  I think?  Having a brain fart ... must go look it up Embarassed.

A bit of a note here....C-Pac -- same old tired and totally un-workable approach.  Just sort of wonder how many times do you have to hear, it didn't work this time, or last time and frankly never will.  They don't see the un-reason and dysfunction...gives great meaning to the quote "ignorance is bliss, but its no excuse".  What excuse will be there when the un-mentionable finally hits the fan and there is no choice when it is all over you.  Sigh !!!! It shouldn't be so hard to understand.....

LOL! My proofreader has gone to another planet, I think.

What I most like physically about lions, for the record, (apart from everything else) is how expressive they are, and also their very chiseled structure. Tigers have round faces and so do leopards. Cheetahs are also gorgeous, but they don't emote the way lions do. Notice the picture of a lioness and her cubs that I posted a few pages back - look at that proud and tender mother's face!

Jackie, we crossposted. Yes, Sarah Palin telling white lies, as usual, and passing them off as witticisms which the useless press does nothing to correct. She says Obama never had a background check - LIE! The charming psychopath drones on....

Anyway, when you are invited to speak at a conservative gathering that doesn't include Karl Rove, you have to be a radical. More here:

It's rather ironic that it's the existence of people like Sarah Palin which provides the most compelling evidence that the atavistic right may be right about one thing---evolution is a failed theory.

“More background checks?” she said, railing against new gun control proposals offered by Democrats in Congress. “Dandy idea, Mr. President. Should’ve started with yours.” Lines like that frequently brought the crowd to its feet.
    ---------------------------------------

What a lovely way to honor the memory of the 26 innocents slaughtered in Newtown, Governor Palin.

How respectful of all those Americans killed by one of America's three hundred million guns.

$2 gallon/gas Michele Bachman and her incandescent bulb conservatives can't wait to go back to the future.

The level of conservative/tea-party disconnect with reality is impressive, and it generally requires hospitalization in one form or another to be properly treated.

They still haven't figured out that they are the dead weight that is sinking the Republican party.  Funny to watch them telling each other that it's the ones with a few ounces of sanity left that are the problem.

Newt Gingrich has it backwards. If Thomas Edison invented the light bulb today, it would be Republicans who would be blocking its development because of all the donations from the candle industry they depended on for their funding.
