Sun - thanks for the link - now THOSE are clothes that I like!
Though my favorite clothes, I must admit are crazyshirts t-shirts and citron silk pants and jackets - oh yeah, and sarongs!!! I probably have 30 sarongs in cotton, rayon and silk. I also make silk shirts and pants that I either dye or paint - usually I do shibori now, though as I've gotten too lazy to do much silk painting lately. I'm hoping that once I retire I'll have more energy to do fun stuff. -
Hah! Sunny, you have more grey matter than you give yourself credit for.
Not a fan of Oscar, but that was a nice collection. Restrained and tasteful. He is known for his great skill with lace.
Hoping HL is feeling safe and sound after her flight!
I LOATHE it when people come to a cancer board, where there are people who are dying, to complain of minor ailments. So what I am about to do is hateful to me. Permission to complain about a triviality:
My mattress, which is too firm, is making my nights so painful that I am left wincing with pain during the day. I am shopping for a new one tomorrow. Any recommendations for getting rid of the pain (I am not a good OTC med responder) and any pointers on types of mattresses would be most welcome. Had to go home from work because of the pain. Wimp. Apologies in advance for bringing this relative triviality here. I sleep on my side - I think I need a less firm mattress, but not quite sure....My lioness den is tiny, so my mattress tends to serve as a sofa.

Hi, all - thanks for the hugs and virtual calming drugs. I am safe on the ground (got in before the ground stop at DCA this afternoon) and had an uneventful flight, except, of course, the unreasoning, unreasonable terror. I have flown all over the world on dozens of different airlines (in a conversation with a pilot once, we compared numbers of airlines - I stopped counting at 36) and have never had a bad flight or a bad landing. I have just grown increasingly terrified and I don't really know why. DH previously was adamantly against drugs for me to fly, but this last time was so bad he actually wrote it on the list for our next appointment. Not sure how that will go - I react so poorly to most drugs -- but I have to do something or I won't be able to fly. As I tell people, it isn't the flying that bothers me, it is the prospect of falling out of the sky and hitting the ground.
Athena, two words for you for a new bed - Select Comfort. That is the Sleep Number bed. I have one and DH has one and we swear by them. They are adjustable air mattresses, and you can adjust it to whatever firmness you need. The slightly extra expense is well worth it. We will never ever have a conventional mattress again!
Kam, am loving the fact that you are loving retirement. I expect to be in that same state of mind when I hang it up!
L -
Athena - have you thought of just putting a gel topper on your mattress? I like firm, but I don't like hard, so when I stay at a friend's house, I drag along my egg crate foam. I can totally relate to a bad bed. I bought my Beautyrest 7 years ago and it's already breaking down. Every morning I have a back ache. The place I bought it has gone out of the business, so not even sure I can get the warranty honored.
-
HL - I've kind of settled in on the Sleep Number idea too. On my walk today, my gf and I were discussing. If a part breaks down, like an air baffle, you can replace them rather than buying a whole new bed.
-
Many of my aches and pains went away when I got a memory foam mattress.
-
Athena, I agree with HL on the Sleep Number bed. We liked ours so much that we put it in a guest room and spent more than I would have ever thought I'd spend for a bed to upgrade to a split king adjustable Sleep Number bed. So with that we can each adjust the firmness of our side of the bed and we can also raise and lower the head and foot. That has been heaven for me as I slept on a wedge before (need to sleep that way to breathe good) and with the adjustability I can also raise my feet which along with adjusting the air portion takes all strain off my hips and makes me so comfy. If you don't need to sleep with your head raised the flat one is great too.
-
RR - can you give me an idea which model of the sleep number that you bought? (Interested in the raising and lowering of head and feet.)
-
Kam, we got ours from QVC. If you go to QVC.com and search for Sleep Number they have quite a few to choose from so you might want to look at all of them. I'm going to put a link to the one we got but if the link doesn't work then just search and look for the one I've put below the link:
Sleep Number Signature Series SK Adjustable Bed Set H198776
-
RR - It's confusing, as the Sleep Number site has 4 bed series: Classic, Performance, Memory Foam and Innovation. Your link to QVC advertises the Signature series, not mentioned on the SN website. From what I gather, the frame (per the Sleep Number website) is what makes the bed raise and lower at the head and feet and they call it "Flex Feet." It appears you can put any one of their beds on the frame. The QVC one looks like a good price, depending on the mattress.
Was it difficult to put together? I saw my friends SN bed in their driveway...several boxes?
-
My sister and her DH swear by the sleep number bed and also got one for their guest room. We just have memory foam but are both very happy with them. We have the king split where we can raise the head and feet, separate from one another. I think they are great!

Sweet granddaughter turned one year today. Time flies! Party tomorrow so I will try to post a picture if I get a good one!
-
Good morning, all! Freezing cold here with snow on the ground. Good day to hunker down. Happy Saturday!

-
Happy Birthday to your little one, Glenna! The time does fly so take tons of photos.
Thank you for the Words of the Day, Belinda. I practice that daily, which explains why I have so few friends hanging around. ;-)
Happy good morning to all! Temps here will hit 60 by the end of next week!

Kam, it is confusing and to add to the confusion the beds that they make for QVC may be different than some you might find in the store. Our Signature series adjustable seems to be like the original Sleep Number bed we got years ago at a Select Comfort store except it's adjustable. I think it's the basic low end of the adjustable ones - no fancy memory foam in the top part or anything.
The original bed was easy to put together. I let DH handle the adjustable ones without my help. If you order from QVC then UPS delivers and they're supposed to deliver just to your driveway. I charmed the guy and he dropped them near my porch. I was able to lug some of the boxes into the house myself but left the heavy boxes, containing the platforms for the mattresses and the mechanical parts. I might have been able to get them on our handtruck and in the house but DH was due home and I didn't want to risk banging anything up so I left them for him.
If I remember correctly when you order from a Select Comfort/Sleep Number store they deliver inside your house and will do setup too if you want. You really should go to a store and try them out anyway.
The regular SN bed was easy to put together. It's about 15 years old and it still looks and feels brand new. They don't wear down like regular mattresses do.
DH got the adjustable ones together pretty quickly but he is very mechanically inclined so I can't say it would be easy. They do fit in regular bed frames.

I certainly want a bed that lasts longer than me this time! Like that part. My bed, before this Beautyreast, was a nice thick piece of foam. It lasted 15 years and cost $100. It even came with a zippered cover. I got it when I went back to grad school as a temporary bed, but that thing was comfortable. My new austerity program will not allow for anymore bed failures.

Glenna - didn't you just have a new grandbaby? Happy Birthday. One year - such a sweet age.

Athena.....so glad you brought up the back/mattress issues. I have had bad mornings lately.....and just yesterday, the un-thinkable. I'm barely moving today. First off is ascertaining just WHY ( bringing a number of scary ideas up ) I'm at this juncture and then determining afterwards.....what to do about a bed. I've never heard ( of course, I haven't tried ) of anyone who was not able to have appreciative feelings for th SN beds. Cousins just got one about a year ago and I may be over there "trying" it out soon. Anyway....just glad you brought that up.
As far as changing Electoral College. I'm for whatever will give the fairest shake to either side. I just don't want there to be states using one method over states who don't. That is something that should be out of the question. At this point, that will be one of the possible few ways the Republican party could get anywhere. Lordy, how many times can you shoot yourself in the foot and not GET it. The fact that they feel the need to CHANGE how districts are counted should be enough for them to realize how OUT OF TOUCH they are and will stay......if they don't get their act straightened out.
Anyway....going out to the breakfast ( slowly of course ) that I smell cooking in the other room. Really thankful my kids are here.....it is going to be a big help.

Hey peoples,
I petitioned the White House to establish a single-payer healthcare system. Anyone want to sign?
Here's the link:

Thanks, Enjoyful - done!
-
Thank you, RR! Please share the love!
-
Has this not been done before? If so, what about that elephant in the room! Signed and spread the word.
-
I'm sure it has been done before, but it doesn't hurt to do it again. :-)
-
HL glad you're on solid ground. Your explanation makes great sense to me - almost made me smile...
ATHENA:
I am IN LOVE, truly, absolutely IN LOVE, with IKEA foam mattresses. They are NOTHING like the "solid" ones in mattress stores. THere is an IKEA in College Park, MD. You can "try them out" - I will never go back to a box spring set up again. It was an Orthopedic Surgeon in London who suggested the foam mattress. It is VERY firm, and I use a memory foam topper ( thank you COSTCO!) which has the best ones - natch.
You can use an IKEA mattress on a box thingie, I use it on wooden slats - makes me yawn just thinking of it. LOVE IT.
Glad you liked that dress - the colors, that shade of green & salmony pink - delicious. LIke it better without the puffy shrug, but san imagine that puffy shrug on another dress.
COLD COLD COLD....sunny, but COLD. Speaking of sleeping, slept almost 12 hours last night, and linger & I'd have to call it hibernation!

Once again, I check out for a few days (really busy with work), and then have the challenge -- and the fun -- of catching up. So, this is going to be kind of scattershot.
On Paula's tx #4 . . . hope you check in, Paula, and hope it goes easy on you. For what it's worth, the wisdom about side effects being cumulative DIDN'T hold for me for my final treatment. It was by far my easiest. The brain is a pretty amazing organ, and I think I was so freaking relieved to be DONE that my brain overrode all my other systems. I hope, hope, hope it's the same for you.
On fashion . . . I'm pretty indifferent. I have a fondess for vintage dresses and coats, but that's as much because I'm cheap as because of any fashion sense. I do have some awesome coats, though. And some really cool purses -- including a couple of old-fashioned structured ones (basically they're like leather boxes with a handle).
Speaking of coats . . . it's been freezing cold this week, leading me to take my mink-collared persian lamb out of the storage closet and actually wear it. I was a little nervous about being seen on the streets of vegan-friendly Park Slope in fur, but if anyone shot me a dirty look, they were so bundled up against the cold that I missed it. And that politically incorrect coat IS warm. (Seeing as how it's at least 50 years old, I figure the statute of limitations on those minks ran out long ago.)
Fear of flying . . . HL, I can totally relate. There was a brief period after I was dx'd when I was able to fly without fear (turbulence? so what! I have effing CANCER, so do your worst) . . . but now it's back with a vengeance. My last flight to Detroit began with the pilot announcing that we could expect rough air the entire way and he was asking the flight attendants to remain seated for the duration. Needless to say, it was not a good scene: racing heart, dry mouth and (most embarassingly) at one point I almost grabbed the hand of the stranger next to me.
How about some movie talk? We saw "Lincoln" last night, and loved it. Daniel Day Lewis really seemed to embody Lincoln, and I loved, loved, loved Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens (what a fascinating guy he was). I liked the way Tony Kushner's screenplay was faithful to the historical record (at least, I think it was) but also allowed for some comparisons with the present. (Did anyone else hear echoes of "kill the bill" in the chant to "postpone the vote" on the 13th amendment?) I'm now motivated to learn more about both Lincoln (any biography rec's?) and reconstruction (I started Eric Foner's book a long time ago, but never finished it).
We also caught "How to survive a plague," about ACT UP and the AIDS crisis. Pretty thought-provoking for breast cancer patients. (And emotional . . . as the activists on screen expressed their sorrow and despair about the toll of the epidemic, all I could do was count off the number of wonderful women we've lost right here on this board.)

Check out our radar for today - remnants of a tropical cyclone bearing down on us. The garden is very very happy, Poppy not happy and out of sorts (hates water). We have a long weekend due to Australia Day yesterday. Trying to get organised as it's only 2 weeks until we leave for New Zealand.
-
Suzie, hope this weather system brings needed rain but no damage. I'd missed your upcoming New Zealand trip: do you still have family there, or is it just for fun? (Not that those things are necessarily mutually exclusive.)

-
Lewing - the wind has picked up - I do hope we don't get any trees blown over - there has been a lot of damage further north with tornados coming in off the coast.
All of my family is in the North Island. I've never been to the Sth Island - sad but true. We were planning on going in early 2011 but I got diagnosed with the second bc. Lucky we didn't go then - that was when they had the big earthquake.
This trip is for pleasure, but I have to work for it - we're doing a 5 day cycling trip along an old rail line when we get there. Then we're having another 12 days or so to tour around and for Steve to play golf at one of his favourite courses - yes he's been before but I haven't. We found a winery cycling trip up the top of the Sth Island that we might do as well - only half a day thank goodness. I've been riding to get ready for it but it's been too hot lately. I think I'll be ok. I met a lady last week who did it without any prep - made me proud that at least I've tried.
Here's the trip we're doing
-
Very cool Suzie on the bike trip. Atleast following the rail trail you know it won't be steep (I assume they might take diversions, though). We have a Rails to Trails program in the USA, fyi http://www.railstotrails.org/index.html
-
Kam - yes, it is an introductory level ride, so no steep hills. If you get tired you can travel in the support vehicle - I'm going to try not to but at least it's there for back up.
This is the wine tour one I found - looks easy enough for me:
-
have fun suzie!!
