Ladies, without coming right out and saying who Romney is talking about when he says the "takers"............we all know who he is referring to...........it isn't Medicaid, Medicare, Iraq vets, college students.........................you get my drift...............he won't say what he really means because he is scared to death of losing any votes that he might just get from Obama because he made a "racial" statement about what he calls the "takers"..................I'm from the Philly suburbs...................I know exactly who he is talking about................and he calls himself a religious man........................yea, and so was Judas...........................
-
I was "involved" with a faithful mormon once....a relatively high placed one (churchwise). He's also closely related to a famous mormon politician, to remain unnamed. It's a tight group, to say the least. It's not just a religion. It is a social structure that controls almost every day of one's life. I can't even imagine having one as POTUS and that POTUS being independent of the church hierarchy in SLC. The methods of control over the members are institutionalized. Atleast my friend could laugh at some of their stuff, but still, he had total faith in the religion, though I believe they set him up to be brainwashed at a young and impressionable age (his parents had drifted from the church). Personally, I think Joseph Smith was a con man.

Willard was just described in an interview on NPR, with David Corn, who reported the video, when a man called in and said, the comments reflect Willard's "gated community mindset." Thought that captured the mentality of someone who is trying to become President. Tragic
-
Just read your post Athena....Did he really say THAT about the Palestinians? They want their land Mitt. Argh.
-
I totally get what you're saying ducky. I just don't understand where he came up with that 47% number. Maybe he was pandering, as usual, to his $50,000 a plate audience.
-
I am endlessly interested in the use of the word "entitlement". We don't seem to have entitlements in Canada. We have a social safety net. We have benefits. But we don't have entitlements. Of course there are some people who complain about those who are on welfare and try to make their lives even more miserable. I think the semantics are important.
No one who hopes to be elected or reelected would dare to suggest universal health care should go. Having said that, it's important to recognize that our current Prime Minister has some back door methods (like omnibus budget bills during a majority) to inch us closer to that right wing kind of thinking.
-
Kam, that strikes me as frightening.
Sunflowers, "gated community mindset" does seem to fit.
yorkiemom, the 47% number has been all over the right wing media and blogs. It supposedly covers those not paying income taxes, although many on the right have heard it as "all taxes." Some of that would be due to tax credits inacted as an offset to justify tax cuts to the wealthy. Part would be the elderly, the disabled, those in low paying jobs, even the military and Bingo! some of it would be the wealthy who have special deductions and manage to not pay any income taxes at all.
I'd sure like for Romney to prove he's not in that last group.
I ran across a statement from William Kristol regarding Romney's video. I'm going to post just a bit and then link to the whole thing.
"It's worth recalling that a good chunk of the 47 percent who don't pay income taxes are Romney supporters—especially of course seniors (who might well "believe they are entitled to heath care," a position Romney agrees with), as well as many lower-income Americans (including men and women serving in the military) who think conservative policies are better for the country even if they're not getting a tax cut under the Romney plan. So Romney seems to have contempt not just for the Democrats who oppose him, but for tens of millions who intend to vote for him."

If I had to choose the single most offensive idea expressed by Romney in that video (and there are too many to count), it is that he said that 47 percent think they are entitled to food. He obviously considers food a privilege. Even Marie Antoinette agreed that the "peasantry" should have something.
What specific idea or phrase did you each find most offensive?
-
Lassie - very interesting how politicians use the word "entitlement"
For some people, getting food assistance is considered an "entitlement" ( think undeserved) and those same people probably don't think twice about deducting the mortgage interest they pay on ALL OF THEIR HOUSES, to redue their Federal Income Tax as an "entitlement." Meanwhile, anyone who RENTS their home, or apartment is NOT ALLOWED to deduct the amount of rent they pay. SO what is an "entitlement."
When the very weathly are able to place their investments, wealth "off shore" to avoid paying Federal Income Tas, which Willard Romney acknowledged he does and goes on to say "it is legal." Is that an entitledment?
So, someone working, earning a minimum wage, working at several jobs to support a family, probably is not able to deduct anything like "mortgage", probably can't afford to buy a house, let a long several houses, and any government assistance for housing, food, health ( Medicaid) is called, by some, "an entitlement."
-
The most egregious thing in that video is Romney's assergion that those 47% actually think they are entitled to food! FOOD??? Well, the NERVE of some people! Just let those kids and seniors starve rather than survive on the government's dime!
-
Athena, the whole phrase that they think they're entitled, to food, to housing, to healthcare (don't quite remember the order) was upsetting. But if I had to pick one it would be food, although it seems like the Republicans are trying to take away any help for all of those.
-
His spokespeople are trying to now say the 47% are those that are with Obama and leaving out the part "who are dependent.....who are victims....who believe they are entitled to.....my job is not to worry about them...."
Romney essentially said 1/2 the country are moochers. This is very different from saying 1/2 the country aren't voting for me. He claims he spoke unelegantly (you're right there Romney) and "off the cuff." This is another way of saying, this is what I really feel and I didn't put it in code so my wealthy base understands.
I am reminded of the guy in the audience at one of the R debates who said..."Let Him Die!" to the hypothetical of a young man dying, but had not health insurance. They really do believe this and this goes hand in hand with the belief that some people aren't entitled to food or healthcare.
How is this pro-life?
As Michelle Obama said at the Democratic Convention 'Being President Doesn't Change Who You Are – It Reveals Who You Are.' I think we are lucky to have cameras these days so these beliefs can be revealed before the damage is done. We got rid of the bigot George Allen from VA and now we will prevent this plutocrat from getting the office of POTUS.
-
Slightly OT but: A couple of weeks ago I was listening to NPR and the discussion was about the unemployment figures. The guest (can't remember who -- estrogen deprivation (!)) mentioned that there are approximately 3 million hi-tech jobs waiting to be filled, but employers cannot find qualified people to fill them.
As for entitlements -- I always thought that word meant that a person was "entitled" to receive them, for example Social Security and Medicare. Strange how it's been turned into a dirty word.
Americans strongly believe in the "picking myself up by the bootstraps and becoming a success" meme. Nothing wrong with that, except that not everyone starts out with the metaphorical bootstraps, and others lose them along the way through no fault of their own (accident, disease, bank failures etc.). What I find most egregious is that the new GOP just doesn't care about those folks, and indeed BLAMES them, and Romney's address sadly makes that very clear.
-
Linda, very good points. Somehow entitlements has come to have a negative connation in the U.S.
Another opinion piece that covers additional ground (lots of interesting information - David Frum, if somebody's already posted this I apologize):

Hi Friends!
This is off topic .. but the weather is really scary here today. It's black as night out right now and tornadoes are forecast for the NC/VA border counties. Mr. Tim has already called twice to nag me about going into the dreaded basement. yikes!
Rabbit ... you know how much I love being told to get to the basement!
Hope everyone is having a good day.
hugs,
Bren
-
Yikes, stay safe Bren and let us know what happens.
-
Oh my gosh, Bren, stay safe!
-
There are probably 3 million hi-tech jobs available, because........even the very intelligent who are not blessed with parent's who can afford to send them to college, and who the Romney's of the world would like to take away their financial aid, cannot get that hi-tech job, because they can't get the"college education" which affords them to be able to get the degree that says "hey kid, you qualify for that hi-tech job......................if your poor you will get the assistance.....................if your rich you don't need the assistance..............if your "middle class".................your "shit out of luck".....................

Here's another idiot businessman giving Mitt some advice. I suppose where it comes from says it all:
Donald Trump said Tuesday that Mitt Romney shouldn't apologize for his remarks dismissing nearly half of Americans as dependent on government and out of the reach of his campaign, adding "what [Romney] said is probably what he means."
"He has to not apologize; I think we've seen enough apologizing already," Trump said on NBC's "Today." "He cannot apologize. What he said is probably what he means, and he did say ‘inartfully stated.' The fact is he cannot apologize; he is going for those independents. He won't get the votes of a lot of people he's discussing, and if you're not going to get the votes, let's go on with it."

Bren stay safe. If you're under a tornado warning go to the darned, dreaded basement. If it's just a watch just pay attention so if the situation changes. I will now try to turn off my "mommy" switch.
-
Trump is an asshole..............how many times has he had his sorry ass in deep, used bankrupcy as a way out....................he is a good one to be giving advice to anyone...............if we all had the loopholes, advantages, and the "silver spoon" we could live like those idiots too...........................that is why I don't play the lottery............afraid I might win, and end up in the same class as those freaks........................lol...............
-
Bren,
Here is a link on how to prepare for a tornado. http://emergency.cdc.gov/disasters/tornadoes/prepared.asp
Here is the main page of the site. http://emergency.cdc.gov/disasters/tornadoes/
Listen for the Doppler radar siren and when you hear it, get to the basement.
We don't have a basement or storm cellar so we just move into the bathroom. I think tornadoes are scarrier than earthquakes. Of course, I was raised in earthquake country.

-
The PA Supreme Court remanded the voter id law back to the lower court. Not sure what this means. "We need the lower court to examine how voters will be impacted."
-
Bren ... hope your weather has blown over and you were able to avoid the dreaded basement! Check in please.
'You people' 'those people' ... I do believe they think we are all little bugs that somehow got in their playground. Useful only to be used for cheap labor and then pitched to the side of the road when they are done with us.
I thought he meant the 47% the current polls show will vote for Obama were all worthless. Guess he meant the 47% he thinks don't pay any taxes. Wonder if any of those rich donors in the room had enough loopholes and offshoring of their money, etc. to be in that 47% not paying taxes? And does he not comprehend that the category is fluid? People lose a job or have lots of medical expenses and have a 'don't pay' year after many years of paying and then go right back to paying again later. It's not the same people every year.
But we all know who he wants his base to think he's going to ignore. Going to be some rude awakenings if they ever realize it's them too.
-
That is good news, Kam.
-
Excerpts from the court's decision:
"We find that the disconnect between what the law prescribes and how it is being implemented has created a number of conceptual difficulties in addressing the legal issues raised," the high court wrote in its decision today.
The justices asked the lower court, which had found the measure permissible, to submit a supplemental opinion on the question of ID availability by Oct. 2. Two dissenting justices said it was too close to the general election to consider the merits of the law and that the lower-court's decision should be reversed.
More: http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-09-18/pennsylvania-supreme-court-blocks-voter-id-law
It basically means they are saying they withhold judgement pending further investigation into the law's applicability, viability, etc. by a lower court. It doesn't judge for or against one side, but it sets aside the lower court judgement upholding it. Not certain what it means for things on the ground.
-
Athena .. I was raised in earthquake country too. They just don't phase me. The tornadoes are kind of scary though.
The really bad weather seems to have blown over ... still dark and raining out.
Glad to read the court knocked the ruling back to the lower court for further investigation.
hugs,
Bren

Are you more (or less) conservative that Mitt Romney, from the Christian Science Monitor. Take the Test.
-
It says I lean left.
I already knew that.
-
I was told that I left of the President, which is true. And let GG said, I already knew that.
