    Lindasa, I read somewhere about kale chips - not sure if those were deep fried or what.

    I always put apple cider vinegar on greens.  My parents were from Michigan and I grew up in rural Missouri.  Our cooking was always a mix of northern and southern styles ... lots of things we took turns.  We are still a family split on preference for unsweetened vs sweet tea.

    I did not know you could deep fry greens.   I don't even own a deep fryer anymore though.

    So ... who is going to volunteer to try the cracker thing next time you eat ice cream?  Anybody?  It works especially well if you use the cracker like a spoon :)

    White Rabbit, balsamic vinegar is very good on greens, so I imagine apple cider vinegar would be too.  I guess all kale isn't tough so if you've got a tender variety here's a recipe:

    KALE SALAD
    A delicious and substantial winter salad.   * 2 tablespoons dried currants
       * 7 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar, divided
       * 1 tablespoon unseasoned rice vinegar
       * 1 tablespoon honey
       * 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
       * 1 teaspoon salt
       * 2 bunches Tuscan kale (about 1 pound), center ribs and stems removed, leaves thinly sliced crosswise
       * 2 tablespoons pine nuts, lightly toasted
       * Parmesan cheese shavingsPlace currants in small bowl; add 5 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar. Let soak overnight. Drain currants.

    Whisk remaining 2 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar, rice vinegar, honey, oil, and salt in large bowl. Add kale, currants, and pine nuts; toss to coat. Let marinate 20 minutes at room temperature, tossing occasionally. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Sprinkle cheese shavings over salad and serve.

    People here expressed objections to tax funds being given to what is supposedly a charitable organization that has an agenda that many taxpayers strenuously oppose.  This is an organization which was founded by someone who promoted eugenics, or selective breeding.  Margaret Sanger espoused the thinking that the genetic makeup of the poor, and minorities, for example, was inferior.

    There are a number of reasons to oppose federal tax dollars going to this organization, not the least of which is that they are the largest provider of abortion in this country, but that is certainly not the only reason.  Mixing up a charitable organization and tax funding is complicated business at best.

    In defense of that organization, a few other people here have chosen to launch personal attacks toward anyone who would dare oppose this organization.  The moderators have already asked us to tone it down once today, do you really think they'll ask again?  If this thread gets shut down, it will be because of the vicious attacks toward people who are members of this site, not because of the words that have been written questioning the wisdom of the government funding a private organization with a polarizing agenda.

    Kale chips are SOOOOOOO easy.  Wash kale.  Pat dry.  cut into managable pieces.  Toss with a bit of olive oil and sea salt.  Place in single layer on a cookie sheet in 400F oven.  Watch closely as its not nearly as tasty if you over do it.  Remove when crispy.  Scarf down.

    My monsters LOVE Kale chips.  We do them as our veggie some nights.  But you do have to keep an eye on them.  I think it takes about 15-20 minutes but once they are dry they brown really fast and are not as good.

    You can also do cauliflower chips but NOT swiss chard chips---too much water, not enough fiber.

    No thanks on the crackers and ice cream. . . unless its maybe a goat cheese ice cream. . .

    3monstmama, thanks for the recipe and the favorable word.  I will have to try those for DH who is not as wild about kale as I am.

    Anyone know how to get rid of little fruit fly type bugs that are coming out of the soil in one of my plants.  I don't want to use any toxic sprays because of the pooches.  I've used the glue strips and caught hundreds of them, but they still keep on coming.

    blue, a spray bottle filled with water and a tablespoon of dish soap should do the trick. Make sure you soak the soil and spray the underside of the leaves.

    Ok!  Enough is enough!  I gave up my entire future and career because I refused to have an abortion some years ago.  BUT!  That does NOT mean everyone who has an abortion should be called "baby killers", imo.  Yes, it's true that it has gotten out of hand and there are some women who use abortion as a contraception BUT it is unfair to classify the other women who have legitimate reasons for having an abortion, as a "baby killer".  I am against abortion but there are certain cases where I feel a woman has a right to end the pregnancy if she does it at the right time.  To some of you, there is never a "right" time and you have a right to your opinion but you also do not have the right to insist that other women are "baby killers" because they feel forced to end there pregnancies which may have been forced on them by rape, incest, or molestation.

    I left this group because I thought you did  not want to discuss politics and lately you seemed obsessed by political issues.  So, I think I have a right to share mine.  We also need planned parenthood because too many women (even in this day and age) do not take the time to get educated about how to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies.  An "unwanted" pregnancy is NOT an excuse to end the life of an innocent fetus imo.  "You MAKE it, you TAKE it."    A wise doctor once told me when I was crying about how my pregnancy was going to end my career.  "If you don't want to have a baby, you shouldn't have been having sex!"   That could be a good motto for our schools to put up for our kids to see.

    Have a good day ladies.

    Blue, if you have a planter that drains well if I recall correctly years ago it seems that I put a plant in the utility tub and filled it, letting it continually over run to drown the little bugs.  Then let the plant drain well.   You might also try a simple soap spray.  I don't remember the proportions but just a couple of drops of liquid soap mixed in with a spray bottle full of water and spray all the leaf and soil surfaces.  But if they're coming out of the soil I think the drowning method might work better.

    re agendas that "many taxpayers oppose,"  it just so happens I oppose war.

    Can I make sure tax dollars do not go towards that end?  Because I don't support it.  I suspect there are many, if not millions, of taxpayers who agree with me.

    I am also not in favor of subsidies to big agriculture.  I do not mind subsidies to small family farms.  Please make sure that subsidies to big agriculture are ceased immediately.

    But what I really really really oppose is one person forcing another individual to behave a certain way or adhere to a particular system of belief.

    Medigal, thank you for your opinion.  I agree---don't want to risk babies, don't have sex.  In my youth, I personally held that thought for myself for a number of years.  But I was able to get to that conclusion because I was educated---I DID know where babies came from, I DID know how much work a baby really was, I DID want more for myself and have dreams for my future.  With none of those things, as the child of a single mother with an absent father, I could have just as easily gone the other way.

    to the first questions asked:Who are these women that use abortion as birth control, Answer: unfortunately girlfriends in college and they laughed about it, that is when I knew abortion was so wrong and I would always fight to get it banned, except for extreme cases, and White Rabbit, exactly why are there so many unwanted pregnancies in this day and age, with all the birth control methods that we have?

    I was raised by a strict Italian father and mother.  Sex before marriage was a big no-no, but they did raise me to respect others, and the position life puts them in.  I guess that's why I am so passionate about tolerance, and can't stomach hatefulness.

    Sorry Imbell:  I have already done my 10 years of ugliness.  I am now working only on 10 more years of being lovely.  I am not prepared to be ugly again.  Besides, I can't stand "chain" letters of any sort and sure don't believe they belong in a discussion group.  I will take it just that you are posting this as a joke.  Your "ant" is really quite cute!

    As for dinner, I'm having anything that isn't kale!  Blecch!

    Kindergarten asked "why are there so many unwanted pregnancies in this day and age, with all the birth control methods that we have?"

    IMHO, because teenage girls, as a rule, are not the smartest tools in the shed and are probably thinking;  if I get pregnant, I'll get the guy, he'll marry me and we'll all live happily ever after.

    ETA: I in no way mean this as an insult to "all" teenage girls...just most of those I've met...seem really immature and flighty.

    gracie1, I would agree.  I would add that most think of getting pregnant as something that happens to other people. . . sort of like getting cancer. . . .

    But face it, most teens and pre-teens just don't think stuff all the way through---not the boys, not the girls, not the little stuff like what might happen when you toss that ball at your brother who is on the porch in front of the glass window, not the big stuff like what if you can't really keep track of what time of the month it is or what if you really can't just "pull out" before it happens.  It is a stage of life that we all went through and grew out of. . . .

    Chicken just went in the oven.

    To weigh in on the topic.I am pro-life from birth to natural death. It is legal to have an abortion in this country. If that is to be changed it must be done through the regular legislative process. The end does not justifies the means.

    Well, Ladies!!! It truly does not help to fight about abortion on this thread. It just causes stress and bad feelings. we need to use our voices and opinions and take them to the politicians in charge. They are the ones that can actually do something if enough letters are written and voices are heard, and vote for the ones that adhere to your philosophy.

    Kinder:  I agree with you that our opinions would be more fruitful if taken to our politicians.  However, why do you consider it as "fighting" just because we are discussing a difference of opinions in this thread.  Personally, I like to hear what others think about a subject and if I give a different opinion, I i no way consider this "fighting" with the ladies.  Using such terms is what brings the Mods in on us because they, too, seem to have a problem with knowing the difference between exchanging different opinions and actually having a "fight".  To me, having a fight means calling someone obscene names etc.  There has been no such actions from the posts I have read.  I appreciate it when someone feels intensely about a subject and this comes out in their postings.  Nothing wrong with that in my opinion.

    I agree with Medigal (and welcome back by the way). Disagreeing is not arguing unless one gets personal and insulting. We are not that way.

    Well, dinner is a tossup: rubber chicken in the convention hall or room service cobb salad and peach cobbler (in ATL). Hmmm.

    It is soup night at our house.  A couple of weeks ago, we started a new thing---Monday nights we eat soup and salad and read a book.  It is quite the hit with our family---reading and no one bugging you to stop. . .

    I made tonight's soup yesterday is based on lamb stock [started with a bunch of bones and roasted them in the oven]  with black barley, farro, carrots and onions.  I will probably toss all the spinach in the fridge into the pot before serving.  If I get it together and get home on time, I will try to toss some dessert in the oven.
